Been to this place twice in the past year. Great experiences both times. Staff are super friendly and knowledgeable about their collection.. The inside is very cozy feeling, with the entire wall behind the bar being basically a library of whiskey. My first visit, I had a flight of Redwood Empire bourbon & rye. It was god, RE makes great stuff. For my second visit, I had their Islay Trio flight, wanting to try something different. Best one was by far the Lagavulin 16 year (glass on the right), as it has a rich peaty flavor to it. They even allowed my dog to sit inside with me, although we were limited to the counters at the front of the lounge. Nonetheless, the staff were very accommodating to my pup and I, even bringing him water. This is a fantastic place to visit if you're a whiskey connoisseur, or just want a good cocktail. As a whisky enthusiast going back to 2017, this place is fantastic for trying and trying and trying ...and trying. Mitch the owner knows things, has stories, and can point you to bottles to try. And if he's gotten to know your palate, he'll start suggesting some bottles you should buy from his shop. And if you're a little tipsy, you might buy that bottle even if you really didn't want to. I had stopped by with my husband after a night of bar hopping and was pleasantly surprised with the whiskey club. It had a nice class to it. The service was excellent. My husband asked for a recommendation and got the perfect drink. I remembered enjoying this place and recommended it to a friend so we stopped by when in Monterey. I was very pleased to see that the place was busy on a Friday night. Not too busy that there weren't tables or anything, but they are doing good business and that was great to see. I remember them only having a few cocktail options last time I went and now they have a much expanded menu including a half dozen different kinds of old-fashioneds and gin drinks. I got the mocha old-fashioned and it was really delicious. I also had a bee's knees which is gin with honey and lemon and that was also great. Because the line around the block to see a show at the Golden State theatre looked like a stupid way to spend a half an hour, we decided to pop in. I had never been here, because whiskey is not my thing, but scotch I enjoy and hadn't had in years. Well first thing I learned walking in is, is that scotch is whiskey. WHAT? My friend and I shared a tour of a scotch that started with "G" (clearly still not an expert) and I had poured my half with a little water and ice, like I prefer. Yes, I made a mess, trying to add water and ice to those tiny taster glasses, but I like it, like I like it! We enjoyed our shared tasting. Cute place and cozy chairs at bar, for short-rounds like me. I never sit at bars because the stools are usually always uncomfortable and too tall for me to get my large butt on! We arrived with twelve people to celebrate after a night raising money for a local non-profit doing incredible humanitarian work. A friend who bid on and won an auction item at the fundraiser walked in with it, and we cheered. Once. Soon after that, the owner told us we were being too loud; he said, "This is a tasting room, not a bar." Our party made up less than 1/3 of the people in the establishment. Other than one cheer, we were not any louder than any other group. Had a really weird experience here on a Saturday night. Took the one open seat at the bar and was greeted by a guy in a suit (presumably an owner or manager). Since I was visiting from the east coast, I asked for a recommendation for something local. He said, "nothing we have that's local is worth drinking." Okay... So he asked what I generally like, and I told him I typically like whiskies with strong peaty or smoky flavors. He then tried to talk me into a $75 one-ounce pour of Macallan 30, which I politely declined and said I was looking for something more in the $15 range. He said they didn't have anything like that. Okay... So I said I would take a closer look at their menu, and he walked away. I eventually resolved to order a local amaro, but in 15 minutes of sitting at the bar, he never came back, nor was I able to catch the attention of any of the bartenders. So I left, empty handed. Stopped by just before they were about to open for the day/evening and the owner, Mitchel, let us in early. Mitchel is a true gentleman and has an extensive knowledge of Bourbons, Scotch and Whiskey, which we were there to taste. Tried a couple of "Tours" of Bourbons, which is similar to a flight of beer or wine. Our tours consisted of about 4 pours each from specific distilleries. Although it can be pricey, because the tour taste is based on the cost of each bottle, it is well worth it for the opportunity to try something you might never have the chance to taste otherwise. The interior of the bar, including the back special event tour room and retail area is beautiful, warm and welcoming. It is a unique and satisfying experience that should not be missed. read more

I was treated to a surprise trip to The Whisky Club and it didn't disappoint. I'm a bourbon enthusiast and the selection was phenomenal, fairly priced, and the staff was extremely friendly. The "tours" flights are a fun experience. I chose the "store pick" tour and was impressed with the selections by the store owner! Each bottle pick was unique and delicious. Mitchel was amazing and helpful, but Lisa interrupted him 2x while I was in the middle of asking Mitchel questions and pulled him away from helping us. Another wonderful addition to the Monterey downtown scene. The Whisky Club have over a hundred whiskies in inventory and simple menu of mixed cocktails as well as light snacks. I showed up with some friends and we had a great time hanging out and trying something new. I had a 2 ounce pour of Shunka Shuto (winter) Japanese whisky (approx. $20) on the rocks. First, after playing sports without us requesting any game, he asked my friend not to cheer for the team when her team was winning. The exact words he use were "be less animated." The owner, Mitchel, was extremely knowledgeable and took time to talk to us about the different types of whiskeys that have to offer. You take a tour of the world according to the types you like, bourbon, Irish, Scotch etc and try what they have to offer. I think there is over 700 types to choose from. The Whisky Club is located on Alvarado Street close to many good restaurants. I'm a whisky fan- particularly bourbon. So many choices in whisky that I can't quite describe. The staff are very attentive and the drinks, whether neat or in a cocktail are fantastic. The versions of Old Fashioned at the Whisky Club are nice, including traditional as well as fruit-infused. This is quite the addition for downtown Monterey. The selection of whiskeys is out of this world both for tasting and retail purchase in the back room. The staff and owners are friendly and welcoming. There's a rather large bar as well as tables for seating. I do wish they had some pub table seating as I prefer the high tops, but bellying up to the bar was just fine. My husband had a $35 scotch flight recommended by our server based on his likes. Prices range from $27 to $140 for three .75 ounce pours depending on the flight selected. Mixed drinks and wine are also available. My husband very much enjoyed his scotch flight and the tastes he had were not some he had tried before. As I have already said, the selection of whiskey is outstanding. I am not a whiskey fan, but I was happy to enjoy a glass of wine while my husband enjoyed his scotch. I was a bit surprised when the server pulled a 375 ml (half bottle) of J Lohr and poured the entire thing in my glass. My wish for future visits is the quality of wines offered is upgraded a bit and maybe a glass rather than 1/2 bottle is offered. I would even be happy if the 1/2 bottle wasn't poured in my glass at once and I had the option of corking and taking it with me. I found the prices a bit high, but the quality of the whiskey offerings are definitely high as well. The night of our visit, we were charged for a mixed drink we did not order. They were quick to refund the money, but I found it odd that my credit card was not refunded. Instead we were handed cash.
