Had to come for their world-famous steak au poivre. Online reservation is not available and you must call them directly to book a dining slot. Since I can't speak French, I asked our hotel concierge to help us with making a reservation about a month ahead. We went for lunch and we were seated by the window. Loved our table but the only way for the inside people to get out to go to the bathroom or something was to move the entire table, which made it a bit tricky. But heck, we're here for their steak and frites! And we ordered their smaller sized steak with fries that was part of their lunch combo as well as one order of their original steak au poivre. They both used the same amazing pepper sauce but the cut of the meat was slightly different. We ordered the meat medium and the meat was very tender. The steak itself was not the type where it melts in your mouth good but I think the star of this dish is their amazing pepper sauce. Man, I ended up licking the plate in the end. It was so good. The appetizers and the desserts were also good but really, the pepper sauce is what you come here for. I am definitely coming back. For that sauce.

I'm literally dreaming about it as I write this. I need to go back soon. Hubby ordered the steak tartare, which came with crispy fries and a simple green salad -- classic, no-nonsense, and absolutely delicious. Service was friendly and efficient, the kind of old-school Parisian hospitality that's warm without fuss. Now, fair warning: they don't answer their phone, and getting a reservation can be tricky. But if you show up right when they open on a weekday, you might just snag a table -- that's what we did. It's a little out of the way, but trust me, it's worth every minute (and every euro of the taxi ride). Our total came to around USD 120, and the bill came with a couple of adorable little canelés on the house. A perfect Parisian meal from start to finish.

Decided to just come on a Saturday noon when they first open, it seems like several outdoor seats were kept for walk-ins so we were able to sit outdoor, it was nice out so it worked out. Literally came for the steak, it was slightly more raw than my usual go to but it was delivered perfect, sauce was great as well. My favorite might be the fries, it was crispy yet soft inside. Almost finished the whole plate! Although quite expensive but lives up the hype, it sort of becomes more of a tourist spot but oh well! Gotta be good to be on international map.
Wonderful steak au poivre for lunch. Service was excellent. Sitting on the sidewalk in Paris could be worse.
Quintessential steak Au poivre! I come just for that but am always impressed by everything. The pork chop on the menu was also out of the world good. The artichoke starter was also good and the eggs and morel was special. Service is friendly and English speaking. Atmosphere is charming bistro.

Our table was tiny and right by a bush. We waited for almost an hour before our order was taken. I was very hungry. The menu is very interesting but I came specifically for the steak au poivre. It's expensive, about $60 usd. But honestly the best steak of my life. I would buy again. The steak is tender and cooked to perfection. The sauce is peppery and rich. It's absolutely perfect. My friend only got fries and asked for a condiment. They do not have ketchup or anything, only aioli. The fires were 7 euro and the sauce was a whopping 10 euro. Biggest ripoff ever. I felt so bad because she had no idea and our waiter didn't tell us. He was very nice though. I would definitely come back with preferably with a reservation.
Came for lunch. We had tartare and terrine and one narrow. The food was ok. Very basic and homey food. The restaurant was busy at lunch. Service was ok, very basic.

Per usual, this restaurant did not let us down! Everything was scrumptious! The oefs with mayonnaise and caviar I'll be dreaming about for the next 10 months. The beef with pepper sauce? I've died and gone to heaven! Make sure you drag your fries through the sauce. It's a perfect balance of flavors, and the pepper isn't too peppery, IYKYK. YUMMMMMM.
Bistrot Paul Bert is well known to tourists and was been extensively reviewed. We had a 7:30 reservation when the restaurant opened and were surrounded by other parties of tourists. When the tables turned over French speakers started to file in. We had a nice corner table. The staff were OK but were noticeably nicer to francophones. We were started off with good gougeres. Wine by the glass was disappointing. We tried one white and two reds and they were all meh. Appetizers were very good. We had the biggest artichokes that we have ever seen in our lives. Our friends had the pig trotters and the burrata- two thumbs up. Two of our party split the some meunière. It was excellent and surprisingly easy to debone. Two of us had really good steak au poivre. We shared an excellent cheese board for dessert. Prices were fair. The space is straight out of central casting. It was a fun night at a nice bistro.
The ouefs mayonnaise, the White Asparagus, and the steak au poivre, that glorious, glorious, steak au poivre were the best things I ate in 12 days in Paris. We walked in at 10:15 on a Tuesday night and ordered quickly, and it was beautiful. Once the waitress decided she liked us she said it was a good move to have come in when we did, no wait, prompt service. The au poivre was the most delicious of my life. Magnificent. I told the waitress I'd never had au poivre until then. Awesome service, perfect atmosphere, a proper perfect French restaurant. I cannot stop thinking about that meal.

The restaurant was indeed busy when I arrived, and yet I was seated right away! I was given a seat next to the restroom, so perhaps a reservation would've allowed for a better seat. Nonetheless, I was given equal attention by the kind server as other guests, whom were a healthy mix of Parisians (like the person who recommended the restaurant to me). I received bread prior to the meal that I didn't try given that I was saving room for the main course. I ordered the famed " Filet de Bœuf au Poivre de Sarawak avec frites maison ". Given how busy the place was, I was very surprised when I was served within what felt like 10 minutes. Whenever I order steak, I always leave the cook of the meat up to the chef. I was right to have done so: it was cooked beautifully! I was pleasantly surprised by how soft it was without it being so rare. The sauce was yummy, and definitely peppery. Maybe too peppery? Yet again, this was also my first steak au poivre, so I'd take my opinion on that with a grain of salt. The fries were thicker than what I've had in other establishments, but were still enjoyable and went well with the sauce. Nonetheless, I cleared the plates. Although I wasn't being rushed, I was in and out within one hour of being seated (which is golden for a New Yorker like myself). All in all, I had a lovely experience, and see why it is so popular!
Very good food and service. The creamy poivre sauce with the steak was amazing. Save room for the soufflé! The servers were friendly, attentive, helpful and very efficient. Pro tip- you have to call for reservations, but they do save a few tables for walk-ins on the patio if you get there at opening time (7:30PM usually) first come first served. The patio has a nice ambiance and I think was better than inside since it was a nice evening. Also, don't ask for an English menu as they don't have them. First timers just get the steak. Or use google translate, or the server will help you with a selection. They don't take Amex so plan for that.
I had high expectations for Le Bistrot Paul Bert given its reputation, but I left disappointed. The restaurant itself has a charming, old-school Parisian bistro atmosphere. The food was undeniably good. We ordered the Heirloom Tomato Salad, the Filet de Boeuf au Poivre de Sarawak, and the Pavlova, and every dish was well executed. The steak was perfectly cooked, the pepper sauce was excellent, and the dessert was a great finish. The kitchen clearly knows what it's doing. Unfortunately, the service completely changed the experience.Before coming, I'd seen on their Instagram and in several reviews that they serve complimentary gougères. I politely asked our waitress about them, and she gave me a smirk and walked away without answering. She never came back. I eventually asked another server, who immediately brought them over, so it clearly wasn't an unreasonable request. I've traveled to Paris several times and had never experienced the stereotypical rude Parisian service until this meal. It wasn't about the bread. It was the dismissive attitude that made us feel unwelcome. For a restaurant that's this difficult to book and has such an international reputation, I expected better hospitality. Great food alone isn't enough when the service leaves you feeling like you're an inconvenience. There are too many excellent bistros in Paris where you can enjoy both outstanding food and genuinely warm service. read more
Ordered: Tartare de Boeuf (~€28): with frites maison & salade verte Filet de Boeuf au Poivre de Sarawak (~€52): with frites maison Coke Zero (~€9) Aya's take: First stop during my first trip to Paris! We had a lunch reservation (call in advance) although they weren't super busy then. They tend to be busy for dinner so definitely arrive early or reserve in advance. We were torn between the Tartare de Boeuf and Filet de Boeuf au Poivre de Sarawak and ended up getting both. The Beef Tartare was fresh, flavorful, and bright. It could have been colder (temperature-wise) but I particularly liked the horseradish flavor and the fresh herbs incorporated into the tartare. The fries & salad complemented this exceptionally well! The dressing of the salad was super light yet just the right amount of citrus to cut through the meat taste. The Filet de Boeuf au Poivre was a good try. It's a very buttery and peppery sauce, and the filet was cooked to a perfect medium. I think it's a bit expensive for what it is but I did enjoy it. I appreciate that they gave us free Gougères (cheese puffs) to start and Canelés (pastry) to end. The biggest surprise was the Coke Zero costing €9! I was completely shocked. You're better off getting a wine or beer for a fraction of the price. Glad we could start our Paris trip at this institution that is almost on every top list. Good try! read more

Incredible filet au poivre (done perfectly rare), scallops that blew our mind, the best bread we ate in Paris, and two amazing desserts: a paris-brest and some really outstanding cheeses. The only thing I'd sub out next time was a wild boar stew which was good but there were dishes on other tables that looked better. read more

So on my 2nd trip to Paris (7 years since my first visit) my wife and I were able to get a walk-in seating. I had been looking forward to coming back since my first time because of a tomato salad I had there the first time. It was life changing. But they changed it and it wasn't nearly as good this time. It had no cucumbers or onions this time. And it had dollops of olive tapenade on it. I don't like olives so I maneuvered around those. But it just did not taste like i remembered. We both got the steak - frites for our mains and that was fine. I have to mention that the frites were the best I had on the trip. 1/2 inch batons that were perfectly crisp and fluffy interior and great flavor. I suspect they were fried in duck fact or tallow. It put any fries I've had in the US to shame. We cancelled our soufflé for dessert because we were just too full. I've attached pics of the 2017 version and the current 2024 version of the tomato salad. read more
My favorite Bistro experience in Paris! Can't say enough: everything was delicious especially their steak a poivre sauce and soufflé. Everything single dish hit the mark and if you are adventurous there's always some French delicacies for you to try out. Service is effective and ruthlessly French ! Wien list is great. We took a chance and showed up at lunchtime without a reservation and got massively lucky! We had heard from various folks that this was the best steak au pointe in all of Paris and OMG this was spot on! Artichokes had just come into season and our waiter recommended this. It was spot on. Delicious sauce, tender artichoke. Oh so good. We both got the steak - medium rare, cooked perfectly and the frites were divine. I went here and the waiter beat me up and called me American scum. Then he fed me two bottles of French wine and the best meal I ever realized I wanted post-order- veal kidney. If you want to fall in love with Paris and French food- you go here. I'm now following everyone associated with this lovely bistro- and their 3rd cousins too. read more
Hands down my favorite and the best spot for steak au poivre in Paris. It's a bustling, unassuming family-owned eatery without printed menus, just boards. A local Parisian took me there for the first time, and the tenured waitress remembered her right away as if they were old friends. It was definitely an amazing introduction to Paris. They kick things off with scrumptious bread, but it's the fries and peppercorn sauce combo that really steals the show. Absolutely delicious. I find myself constantly craving it. My family and I ate there while in Paris in September 2023. It was a beautiful restaurant, but very packed with people. There were six of us and everyone enjoyed their food. We did think it was overpriced, but it still was a wonderful night. One note, we felt that our server was very hurried, mainly because I think she had a lot of tables to take care of. A Great Bistro in the 11th. Away from the tourist hordes (well somewhat away) you will find this perfect neighborhood place -- Bistro Paul Bert. We started with what we called pig nuggets: deep fried bite - sized porkie goodness and the absolute best bone marrow of my life!!! We followed that up with a massive cote de beouf (bone-in ribeye for two) which would easily feed three, especially if you are like us and have been on a glutinous rampage for a week. Nice wine list, including an affordable Crozes Hermitage. A note on French beef: many reviewers of various restaurants in Paris speak to their meat being tough. I am afraid poor ignorant Americans that you do not understand grass fed beef. Unlike most American beef that is corn finished in a feed lot, French beef is pasture raised. This develops a much more beefy flavor but a little less fat. Make sure to not order it past medium (a point) and if you really want a tender steak, order filet, as in filet mignon. Not my favorite cut in France or anywhere else for that matter, but to each his own. I prefer entrecote (ribeye), onglet (hanger), or the before mentioned cote de beouf. Afraid there was no room for desert. Next time! read more
After attempting to make a reservation for a couple weeks, we decided to go for it and arrive at opening time (7:30 PM) and try our luck. We were fortunate and that they had a space for two but we saw a number of people turned away by 8. We have been wanting to try the steak au poivre for quite some time and of course, each ordered the same. It came perfectly cooked and quickly. The sauce was much more delicate than I expected, and the pepper flavor really came through. The fries were very crispy and a nice accompaniment to soak up the extra sauce that was left on the plate. The Grand Marnier soufflé was tremendous, fluffy, flavorful, and airy. The waiter was quick and fairly attentive and a bit comical. We sat outside and it was a lovely Paris evening. We Very much enjoyed this meal. read more

The writer Henry Miller said, "Hell is probably quite similar to most Paris bistros ... a bit overheated, somewhat too crowded, and a little too noisy for my tastes....but, and this is the important part, the food will be marvelous." He must have eaten at Bistro Paul Bert. We loved Paul Bert. You can tell it's an institution. Bustling, festive and slightly chaotic atmosphere with very good bistro food. Here are the best things we ate: Sole meuniere. A classic, well executed. Excellent preparation of this very delicate fish. They cooked it whole and I thrilled friends and family by deboning it myself. It was cooked in a light butter sauce. Foie gras. Huge slab with a ribbon of yellow something or other around it (don't be alarmed), either fat or jelly of some kind. Creamy and deep umami flavor. A lot of geese made the ultimate sacrifice for this dish, so reverence is in order between bites! Veal kidneys. I don't know if I got this because I wanted it or just to gross out my family, but regardless, I liked it very much. Excellent preparation. Family repulsed. Mission accomplished. Paris Brest. I haven't always been a Brest man but I may be now. I never ordered a Paris Brest but have seen them in bakeries. Our waitress explained that this dessert was named after a bike race between Paris and Brest, the regional capital of Brittany. When the dessert came to the table, I was blown away. It was huge in size and was like a gigantic doughnut cut in half and filled with a chocolate chestnut cream and drizzled with light caramel sauce. We loved this place and would return. They were also very accommodating to our children who also enjoyed it. read more
What a phenomenal meal! This place is always booked. The front staff was able to accommodate me despite not having reservations. I decided to skip appetisers since I knew I was going to have a Filet with peppercorn. Note: My fellow Americans may want to order the steak bien cuit (well done) and it will come out medium. That's the way it is here. I had the île flottante (floating island). It is meringue in cream with caramel and almonds. Really good. I wanted to order the cheese platter, but the server noted it is too much for one person. And service was exceptional. I think 3 out of 4 servers speak English, which is a bonus. read more

I stumbled into Bistrot Paul Bert for an evening dinner reservation after about one glass of wine too many. This may (at least partially) explain my thoughts on this restaurant: their steak au poivre is the single most delicious steak I've tasted in my life. I'm normally not much of a steak fan but this is something else. Buttery, peppery sauce paired with perfectly tender medium rare steak--it doesn't get any better than this. And yes, I will have frites with that. read more

We came here after an absence of five years and it was just as good as we remember. The ambience is perfect and the food is divine. We started with the homemade pork terrine and sweetbread. The terine was nicely balanced and the lamb sweetbreads and mushroom In puff pastry could not have bEen better. Due to the richness of the sweetbreads my partner opted for the sole which had a lovely butter sauce, while I opted for the Lapin which is so rarely served in the US. The rabbit was lovely and the mustard sauce perfectly complimented. The deserts were veRy traditional but remarkable in their depth of flavor and lightness of touch. If you don't speak French don't worry everyone does even though everyone else in the restaurant appeared to be French the day we were there. read more
