Reasons why I love Chicago Restaurant Week is that it gives me amazing finds like this restaurant. I've passed by BITES several times on my run, brunch at nearby bars, etc, and never went inside. I've always tucked it away as a spot I'll eventually come to. Well, for those of you who have had the same thoughts I suggest you go! If you have time to fit it in before restaurant week ends (February 8), they have a great deal. $33 for 4 course meal. I was super happy to have gone with a friend and that friend wanted to share everything with me. Another plus. Some restaurants are overly stuffy when it comes to sharing restaurant week menus, but this restaurant encouraged it! So we started with the taro fries and edamame. The edamame was slightly spicy with a touch of fried garlic. Great flavor and a great snack! The taro fries are my new favorite fries. Its the same texture as the last crunchy bits at the bottom of your fast food bag. Think that but every fry was that consistency. Yum! Entree 1: 1/2 honey butter fried chicken and salmon ceviche. We had the option for King Crab Rangoon but thought it's overkill with getting the 1/2 honey butter fried chicken. I was very impressed by the salmon ceviche. Huge cubes of salmon with avocado, edamame, and saffron. You pile it high on a shrimp chip. So light, airy, and refreshing! The honey butter chicken was very rich. Extra crispy, thick batter! Personally, I don't like fried chicken like that so this wasn't a favorite but it was still good. Entree 2: Crying Tiger Steak and Squid Ink Fried Rice This is was my favorite Fried Rice! Hands down! That squid ink made the rice dark black, and they mixed in bright colored vegetables making the plate an art work. The squid ink gave the fried rice just a little extra flavor, not overly fishy as one might think. It was topped with three jumbo shrimp. If I wasn't so full, I would've eaten the entire plate. The Crying Tiger Steak was tender and juicy. They pre-cut the steak so it was easy to share. The wasabi sauce underneath was a tearjerker, hence the name Crying Tiger. I ended up taking too much sauce in the first bite, and felt it in my nose. The spice from the wasabi contrasted nicely with the heavy steak, giving it a brighter taste and feel. Dessert: Blueberry Yuzu Cheesecake and Saigon Tiramisu Wow! I mean wow! This should've come out first. This would also be a cute date night dessert. I usually don't like cheesecake but this made me change my mind, a little. Topped with tons of blueberry and the citrusy notes of yuzu came through. The Saigon Tiramisu was made with Vietnamese Iced Coffee instead of the classic espresso. The best for last. Our bottle of wine was $20! They had a special that all wine bottles were $20 and all cold sake bottles were $15. Winning! I'd love to come back outside of restaurant week and try some new items on their menu. read more

We had the Spicy Crab Rangoons (not spicy but very tasty), the Seafood Paella, the Mongolian Meatballs, and two Maki rolls (sweet potato; salmon avocado) and a Rose ands Pinot Noir. My friend was a little early for our 6PM reservation but was told she can't be seated until later because there are reservations. She eventually got seated before 6PM, but we noticed the place was pretty empty our entire visit. The service was good! Our server was nice and kept asking us if we liked the food. She also honored our free taro fries coupon when we presented it after we received our check. She also gave us a 10% off coupon for our next visit. The food was average. Personally I wouldn't visit again unless someone really wanted to go. I ordered the Singapore noodles with shrimp. It was authentic, but average in taste. I asked for hot sauce and received Sriracha. My friend felt her "well done" teriyaki sliders were not cooked properly though. My other friend enjoyed her tiger tacos. For dessert we order the blueberry cheesecake. My friends and I had conflicting views on it. I personally thought it was average like my meal. The ambiance was nice, candles on each table and dimly lit but not too dark. read more

Very cute interior and exterior, but the food was just okay. The waiter, however, would not stop flirting with one of the (male) guests at my table and kept shimmying every time he left our table, which was a little uncomfortable for everyone. read more

A cute place with good food, but the service isn't very good. We were there at 12:30pm on a Saturday, and it wasn't very busy. The back patio generally filled up, but the inside was pretty empty. We were seated for 25 minutes before a server came to take our order (drinks and food). After ordering, drinks arrived in a little under 20 minutes, and appetizers arrived a few minutes after that. So overall, we were there for 45 minutes before receiving anything. The water server never said anything, just glumly stared at us to see if we wanted more water. It was pretty odd, but maybe they were having a bad day. It may have overall been an off day for service, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and likely come back. read more

Came into dining area only 4 people inside tonight and a small group on patio...waited over an hour for one order of sushi and burger...we asked twice what was going on and they said group outside ordered a lot of sushi. They brought burger out without sushi after telling us it was sitting under a warming lamp for a bit because they wanted to bring them out together...burger/fries were cold. Gentlemen who came in after us and ordered after us got his sushi order 10 minutes before we did. Off duty staff sitting at the bar had been over served as they were falling all over the bar and screaming at each other. Not a very comfortable quiet place and mediocre cold food. Not sure who runs this place but needs more staff in kitchen or an adult running things. read more

This spot serves amazing drinks, and what a special package we received! We ordered the lychee mimosa that served two for $32, and the package we received was amazing! We received an entire bottle of cava, a beautiful jar full of lychee fruit, and two lovely glass champagne glasses. What a special surprise for the price we paid! We came this morning for restaurant week and it was delicious! Everything was fresh. We were a bit disappointed by the texture of the dessert but we were so stuffed it didn't matter! We got the edamame, gyoza, bacon nigiri, general tso's sandwich, and lava maki. The desert was a cotton cheesecake with mango that was a bit more pound cake texture. Stopped in unexpectedly to grab dinner friends. My biggest take away was the noticeably great service, very attentive and helpful. This place has lots of options that could satisfy many dietary preferences which makes it great for groups. And for dining with 4 people, multiple apps, entrees and drinks (non-alcoholic), everything was under 100$ which for the portions is incredible. The vibe of the place was giving tropical which was cute, definitely a higher energy dinner spot. Wouldn't recommend for intimate or chill gatherings. The main reason I've only put 3 stars is because while the food was good, there was nothing that really stood out aside from the impeccable presentation of every dish. Eating with the eyes is important but priority should always be taste. The only dish I wouldn't recommend is the tofu satay unless you're a huge fan of peanut butter because the peanut sauce dominates the dish which takes away from the other layers of flavor I would've enjoyed to come through more. The food and cocktails all are creative and delicious. Recommend sharing different plates to get a taste of all parts of their menu. Highly recommend the crying tiger & maki fresco. Spicy Duck Ramen had so much flavor! Ambience was so cute. Service was great. We went on a Sunday evening and it wasn't too busy.

Wandered in here after the Cubs game and (at first) we were so glad we did. The menu is expansive and includes everything you could be craving after a Friday afternoon in the sun. The prices are reasonable: the $5 mimosa was an especially terrific value. The service was fast and responsive ... So why only 3 stars? AFTER I tipped 25%, while we were waiting for the Uber, the server actually asked us to leave because she needed the table. In my whole life, I've never had this happen. Nowhere. Not in Chicago, not in the burbs, not when visiting my client downstate, not while on vacation. Never. We politely left, of course, smiles all around. I just love Bites. Look at the 461 photos so far here and either most everyone who comes here is a good photographer or the food is always as beautifully presented as it is delicious. The dishes here are also well-portioned / priced. It's a solid four to four-and-a-half stars. Their daily specials knock it out of the park. $6.00 on Tuesday for a bowl of ramen? Delicious. The tonkotsu broth is a little different than anywhere else I've tried - less layered in flavor & somewhat less oily, but it's still tasty. The shrimp tempura has been served light and crispy every time. I enjoy their blackened shrimp offerings as well as their seaweed salad. I appreciate the addition of juicy beet sprigs because ..."wow" what a bright and sweet compliment to the more salty seaweed. The taro "fries" are delicious. All kinds of varying specials. Today I tried the langostines with garlic pesto - scrumptious, with just the right amount of char-flavor. They also offer sushi, sashimi, chirashi bowl etc here. Today, I tried the samurai roll (half portion - five pieces) It was the first time I've ever had at Fuji apple in a roll - unique! They had a special on bao buns today so I tried the katsu chicken with arugula. Delicious! I've been a handful of times now, and each time, it gets better. My family and I celebrated my birthday dinner here and had a wonderful experience. We ordered the crying tiger, Taro fries, 2 different pork baos, avocado bao, 2 specialty sushis (bite me and the spiciest one), Mongolian beef and bourbon chicken. The food was excellent and comforting. My kids enjoyed it. There is a nice cool, casual vibe in the restaurant. The service is outstanding. Our waitress was very attentive and warm. The staff pays attention to when more water is needed and when plates need to be cleared. We left feeling satisfied and look forward to returning. We are happy to have this local place so near us for such comforting Asian food. read more

Was going to be in the area to pick up some games from various stores so I knew I was probably going to eat around there but I wanted to try something new. Boy, was I glad I did. Beyond just glancing at the menu online, what the website didn't prepare you for is how cozy the interior of the restaurant was: like being inside an Asian family's front room from the 50s or 60s complete with fireplace. Settled at a table with a strawberry lemonade (originally a cocktail I asked to have without alcohol), I ordered a few items: Hamachi Jalapeno - 4 pieces of sashimi with jalapeno slices, black tobiko, some julienned cucumber and a bed of spiralized carrot for each slice. The flavors were well-balanced and the fish a decent size. Lemongrass Quail special - this was my favorite item of the night. FIVE HALVES of quail, roasted perfectly to where it was still moist but the skin was crispy, the lemongrass soy flavor of the marinade matched beautifully with a few drops of fresh lemon juice. The parsley aioli good but unnecessary given how fantastic the flavor of the quail was by itself. Curiously, though, another nest of spiralized carrot was laid on top (but quickly tossed aside). Grilled Langostines special - while it was good, I thought it could be executed better. The shellfish was butterflied and the meat adhered to the shell too much for me to simply fork away and eat it easily so I ended up cutting through and eating the meat and shell in bites which was fine for me but I doubt other patrons would want to do that. Also, while the cilantro-garlic pesto was nice, there was too much on top of the langostines and it nearly overwhelmed the shellfish's flavor. Half of the amount would be fine. Also, on the side... more spiralized carrot... Crab Fried Rice - this was very nice. A good amount of lump crab meat mixed in with the rice and it was surprisingly light, enhanced by the cilantro and fresh lime I squeezed in. I did find one, small, sharp piece of shell but it didn't damage me at all so I just discarded it and kept eating. It was, however, topped off by my new, annoyingly clingy friend... ...spiralized carrot. I ended up being a bit too full to try dessert so GOSH DARN IT, I'm going to have to come back and have some next time. Nice, friendly, attentive service, good food, good atmosphere. My one major complaint was... the miniature cutting boards some of the items were served on. They were nice but the small holes in them allowed for some of the garnish to fall into them and onto the table and some of the juicier items had said juice come precariously close to also being on the table without the lip of a plate to block it. Might want to change up the serving method to combat those issues... 4 stars. I would give them 5, but... I'm not a freaking rabbit with a spiralizer fetish. read more

We came here on a Tuesday and caught their daily half off ramen special as well as the end of happy hour. We started with the vegetable gyoza and taro fries, which were BOGO half off for happy hour. The gyoza were great and the teriyaki/wasabi sauce that came with them was the highlight of the meal. The flavor on the taro fries was pretty good, but I didn't like the thin crunchy cracker texture. For my entree, I had the vegetarian ramen with sweet potato tempura. The tempura was great, but you had to eat it fast as it was getting soggy in the broth! Otherwise, I was pretty disappointed by the ramen. It was very flavorless and boring. The price ($6) was great, but still, I wouldn't get it again. I also had the house red wine, which was very subpar. Overall, the atmosphere is cute and homey. The prices are good and the food is ok. I might come back if I was in the area, but I wouldn't go out of my way. read more

Neat find by my friends and I for our weekend lunch. The place was perfectly busy when we arrived and we were quickly seated. We all got different things to try and were very pleased with it all. I got the okonomiyaki and it was such a huge portion, plus it is pretty heavy filling so I got full super fast. If you don't know what this is, it's like a savory pancake with a bunch of ingredients. Pretty good, nothing bad to say about it. My friend got the mushroom and tofu ramen (he was trying to be healthy), I got to try to broth and it was delicious. I'd definitely come back and try the other ramen next time. The highlight of the day was the chicken & waffles that they had. The waffles aren't your typical American waffles. Oh no, it is PANDAN waffles..the aroma for it is just amazinggg, and the flavor was very subtle. Pandan is this green leaf that Asians use to make a lot of different desserts so the waffles were green on the inside. Another unique thing about this dish was the COCONUT SYRUP. It was heaven. With the Thai owners, they incorporate Thai flavor with lots of herbs to many dishes that enhance simple dishes to the next level. We love their Taro fries, curry corn fritter, Bangkok Barbie Shrimp; grilled shrimp with spicy Thai chili-lime dressing on Belgian endive, Super Kraken maki; shrimp tempura, seared ika with cilantro and Thai chili seafood sauce. My roommate and i are regulars here ... not joking. We come here every Sunday. They have HALF PRICE SUSHI on Sunday's!! You can't beat the prices. The food is always amazing. Crab Rangoon is to DIE for. It is flakey and so full of flavor. We have our same server every Sunday and she is great. Always so happy and bubbly. I was super excited to come here for half price ramen. We came here for lunch and there was not a single customer. We immediately noticed the awesome 80's jams playing. We sat down and asked for the free taro fries with the Yelp check in. They were delicious and I could not stop eating them. I ordered the creamy tonkotsu ramen which came with ginger, woodear, whole soft boiled egg, and pork chashu. The broth lacked depth and the ginger and woodear were odd additions. Very interesting and very delicious Asian-inspired dishes. We ordered four dishes. All of them were very good. The first one was a Chicken Katsu Sliders ($7). It was very good. The chicken was very moist, and tender. The bread was okay. Then we got a Crab Ramen Alfredo (special; $12.5). It is a thin pasta with creamy crab sauce and fried soft shell crab on top. This was my favorite dish. The sauce was very creamy. The soft shell crab on top was good, but I felt that it was kinda disconnected from the rest of the dish. After that we got a maki called Bite Me (full order $$15). It is very good too. I liked that it has the seared escolar on top which gave the smokey flavor that complemented the rest of the maki very well. The last food dish was a Bangkok Barbie Shrimp ($10). It reminded me of a traditional Thai dish called Moo Ma Nao (Boiled Pork with Lime Garlic and Chili Sauce), but this one was made with grilled shrimp and less lime and chili. I think it was pretty good, but I think it's a bit too mild for my taste. Our dessert was a Cookie Dough Chopstick ($5). It is a cookie dough wrapped in a spring roll shell and deep fried, served with melted chocolate on top and whipped cream on the side. I really liked the idea, but I think it's a bit too sweet for me. I think they tried to cut down the sweetness by providing the whipped cream, but in my opinion, I would prefer to eat this with a simple less sweet vanilla ice cream. They have a full bar, and a outdoor patio area. The service was prompt and friendly. In short, I highly recommend this restaurant. read more

I've been to Bites a handful of times now and each experience is as pleasant as the last! The servers are always so friendly and their specials are great deals! Sushi used to be half off on Sunday's but now it's half off 2 rolls with the purchase of a starter. Still a good deal! Their rolls are delicious and keep me coming back.
