This was my first meal during our visit to Nashville... we picked it simply because it was within walking distance of our VRBO and it appeared to be solidly in the "Nashville Hot Chicken" genre, so we obviously had to give it a try! It turned out to be a solid choice! The mile+ walk (one way) allowed us to toss caution to the wind and "go for it" - drowning our meals in cheesy-bacon-y goodness. Purely for research purposes, of course - we wanted to get the full experience. I ordered some sort of cheesy bacon chicken nugget dish (don't remember what they called it) and my friend ordered chicken tenders with a side of cheesy bacon fries that we planned to share. We kicked the heat up a couple of notches but didn't go too crazy because this was our first visit and didn't know what to expect for heat. Everything was great! Great flavor... good spice... nice and crispy on the outside; juicy and tender on the inside. Definitely a good start to our Nashville visit. I'm a little bummed we didn't make it back before we had to leave... there were just too many different places we wanted to experience. I visited BJ Hot chicken for lunch on a weekday. I was looking for a Hot Chicken spot without a long line but great HOT chicken. This place fit the bill. BJ Hot Chicken is in a small strip center a little ways out of town away from all of the touristy spots. I was able to easily park, walk in and order with no line at lunch time. I ordered the #1, three chicken tenders with one side. I got a side of fries. They asked how hot and I said "hot". The chicken came out hot but I can handle some spice. My mouth was burning for a good hour but in a good way! The fries needed to cook a bit more so I didn't really eat those. I love a good fry but hate a soggy undercooked one. For several months now I have been meeting a buddy of mine here nearly once a week. Their hot chicken is outstanding. I've had the chicken tenders, and the chicken breast with wing, many times. I order mine mild and the heat level is perfect every time. My buddy likes his hotter, and they never miss the mark. Clean, attractive restaurant. Friendly staff and excellent sides. Very good baked beans, the fries are good, as well as the coleslaw. Unlike many of the hot chicken joints, I'm really impressed with their consistency. Up until this experience, I have never tasted fried catfish. Bucket list item now checked. BJ Hot Chicken does not do small portions of catfish for their sandwich. There is plenty of fixings and sauces to enhance the flavor. The crunch on then exterior with a nice flaky interior was a delight. The only complaint I had was they put everything on top of the bread, so when I attempted to make a sandwich out of it, the bread just fell apart so I had to eat everything individually. I would order it again though because I love it. The hot chicken sandwich was not what I expected. I expected a single piece of fried boneless chicken smothered in the sauce, but instead the batter they use has the heat in it and I got two smaller pieces. This may be their intention, but it caught me off guard. The flavor was good. These guys know how to fry foods. The potato salad was tasty, but lacked seasoning. Ah BJ. How I've missed you. I've been coming to BJ Hot Chicken since they opened. I was fortunate enough I work just a few miles down the road; so I would take almost weekly excursions down to get my hot chicken fix. But now I work from him exclusively until further motice, so I rarely get to visit anymore. One of my favorite things to eat is fried chicken and well... Since I live in Nashville, the conversion from fried chicken to hot chicken is a no brainer. Since I moved to Tennessee, I've been to all the popular hot chicken joints. Prince's, Bolton's, Hattie B's, Party Fowl, etc. Many have come and gone but the formula is simple. Make good fried chicken as your base and you can turn any fried chicken into hot chicken. BJ is as good as it gets. Fresh fried chicken that's cooked to order. It's got great flavor, the skin is crispy, and the meat is juicy. My *only* complaint is the heat levels are inconsistent. I love spicy food but for whatever reason in my older age, spicy food doesn't agree with me as much as it used to. So if I have nothing planned the next day, I'll order a spicier level. Sometimes mild is a little hot. Sometimes hot is a little mild. It might be my taste buds or maybe they screwed up in the kitchen... I don't know for sure. Regardless it's good. Of the sides, the best one in my opinion is the collard greens (which may not be everyone's cup of tea) but it's some of the best I've had. It's strangely savory, which makes me wonder if it's truly vegetarian or if it has some kind of meat/broth in it. I swap between the mac 'n cheese and fries sometimes, but usually get another side of collard greens because I'm already eating something fried, so I know another fried side is not good for me. As a self-proclaimed hot chicken connoisseur, perhaps the only human who has tried all 30 Nashville hot chicken offerings in Middle Tennessee including this newbie, allow me to offer my humble opinion. The inexplicably-inflated ratings on Yelp and Google leave me absolutely perplexed! Of course, it's early in the game with a mere handful of reviews for a month-old restaurant. But anything higher than three stars leaves me stupefied! As soon as I stepped inside, I was immediately confronted by one of my pet peeves, employees who glare at you as if you just landed in a UFO. I'm not asking for "WELCOME TO MOE'S!," but I do want to feel like I'm welcome. The Good: The Breastwing quarter had a very crispy batter and was reasonably tender inside. The french fries were very crispy and FINALLY someone put enough spices on the exterior!!! Well done! They also serve a hot catfish, a rarity. But it could never compare to the spectacular hot fish at Big Shake's in Franklin. The Bad: There is one major requirement at a hot chicken place that separates it from boring old fried chicken; a delicious coating that embodies the piquancy of cayenne and brown sugar, chili powder and garlic, preferably all four. The coating here was completely and utterly flavorless, landing on my list as the absolute worst of the 30 hot chicken places in town, even lower than KFC's knock off. Most hot chicken joints offer a mild coating that still maintains a good kick, a medium coating that's actually pretty hot, and the mandatory unbearable level. But here, there are only two hot chicken levels; mild (with absolutely no spiciness whatsoever), after which the scale jumps to an intimidating-looking capsaicin (which I probably should have tried). Worst of all, the mac 'n' cheese is absolutely inedible, on the opposite end of the spectrum from the masterful mac at Nashville's Silo. I really want BJs to improve and to survive as a restaurant, but for now, you'd be wasting your time and money here until they make some serious improvements to their recipes. Clearly the 5-star ratings are from diners who have never tried Big Shake's or 400 Degrees, the gold standard in Nashville! read more
