They have so many reviews because they give you something for free if you write a review. The people who helped us get set up in the office were so rude and had horrible customer service. We booked for 5 people online, but something came up and only four people could go. They said no refunds. We asked why and they said that's the policy. Which is fine, but they were so mean and degrading when they were talking to us. Her examples were that concerts and sports games don't give refunds so we don't either. We got there at 10:30 for our appointment at 11:30 and didn't get on the ATVs till 11:30. The guys on the beach who were helping us with the ATVs were so nice and extremely helpful! I was celebrating my husbands birthday and decided to take him atving with our 4 kiddos. We all decided we wanted our own atv. I didn't make a reservation, We just decided to arrive early and take a chance. Luckily we did, because there was a fat line behind us. And they had enough atv's for all of us to rent. We had an 8, 9, 11, and 13 year old with us. So we were ranging from different sizes. It was all there first time. After getting to understand and experience how to get the atv's running we were on the go. The children had such a wonderful time and an unforgettable experience. Great place to rent ATVs! I was originally going to go with another company (SunBuggy, but they had HORRIBLE customer service). Thank goodness my cousin recommended me to BJs! I originally called to book an appointment for 7 ATVs for a Saturday morning and that went smooth. The lady who helped me made it super easy and was really helpful. I had to add 2 more ATVs at the last minute and called to see if that was possible. They accommodated my last minute request and we were set! Everyone from the people who worked in the office to those down on the beach were really helpful and knowledgeable. We rented 9 of the 250EX ATVs. Each was $80 for 2 hours. Initial $100 deposit to hold the vehicles for your reservation (which they put towards the grand total) and another $100 per ATV (which you get back at the end, as long as you didn't mess it up). 4th of July weekend, my family and I decided to take a last minute trip to Pismo and do some ATV riding. A first for my 2 boys and niece and nephew. I definitely expected it to be busy because of the holiday so I did not mind waiting an hour in line although we had made reservations online. The line itself and the system in place for getting paperwork completed seems confusing and unorganized. I could get past this because it was definitely busy for them and the lady at the office was very friendly and helpful. We had reservations for 2 hour ATV riding from 5-7. By the time we wrapped up paperwork and got instructions it was about 5:30 (we got in line at 4). The lady at the office told us not to worry because the 2 hour window for riding doesn't start until we actually get our ATVs. We head out to the beach, get a ride to the spot where we get our helmets. It's now 6:15. The guy let us know we have to be back by 8:15. Great. I'm cool with that. Now we wait at another spot to get our ATVs (for 7 of us). There was only one poor guy getting all the ATVs and helping people get unstuck from the sand. By the time we ALL got our ATVs it's now 6:55. They said that although we paid for 2 hours of riding, we can't be out in the dunes past sundown which was 8:15. Fine. At this point I'm already tired and just want to get going. The actual experience of ATV riding was fun although short, but the SHOCKER was a rude beach staff member (chubby guy with beard, wearing a blue shirt with a hole in it) who got in my face and cursed at me in front of my kids, niece and nephew because we came back 15 minutes early and were riding around the path. He was unnecessarily rude and aggressive. I have never felt that attacked by anyone. If he felt that we were doing something against the rules then he could have communicated that to me in a decent way. He chose to come at me like he wanted to hit me. His approach was EXTREMELY threatening for any paying customer, let alone a WOMAN, let alone in front of children. The guy he was with just stood by and did not nothing like he was scared of him too. The whole experience was unsettling! He refused to give me his name because he said he works for "private company". I hate to base my review on solely 1 disgruntled employee however, your staff is the face of your business. If you have 1 employee who is aggressive and disrespectful and nothing is done about it, then that's bad business. read more

My birthday weekend was almost ruined because my hotel told me last minute that we couldn't leave our dog at the hotel. We called BJs and told them our situation. The lady who worked there graciously offered to watch our dog while we atved. Somehow I lost my credit card in the sand and another staff member found it. Waited in line to sign papers and were told they couldn't take us because we were too early (even though it says to show up early) so we had to get back in line and wait again. Once we got out to the dunes, one of the quads stopped working so we called and sat for an hour waiting for someone to show up. Waisted the majority of our time. Had a great time with 3 of my friends. One of the quads stopped working and they thought it was possibly a blown engine. They held the deposit but called back hours later to say everything was ok and our deposit was being refunded. I bring that up so you understand that they aren't crooked. Fun..Fun..and just Fun!!! I would say I have spent the best couple hours here at the Pismo Beach Sand Dunes. We first had to go to their office which about a mile away from the beach to get the reservation. We used the Yelp check-in offer to get one free gas service. Yay!! The registration ladies were very nice and helped us out quickly get all forms and payment done. On reaching the beach, they had a transportation to the place where the ATV were present. The ATV were well maintained. Although I was a bit nervous at first, the staff was very helpful. It was great to ride over the dunes. A must try!!!! read more

If I could give them no stars I would. The service is unbelievable and I wish they could take care of their customers. Our ATV axle literally broke and no refund or apologies. In the real world business owners would like to take care of their customers and either apologies or some sort of discount. NOPE! Also, their ATV's are all old and rusty and would NOT recommend using this company. There are so many others with new ATV's and cheaper. ATVs on the sand dunes is a MUST if you're in the area. This place has the logistics all worked out. So simple if you make a reservation ahead of time and they'll pick up right at the entrance to the beach area and drive you down to the location on the beach. They give you a quick lesson on how to operate the four wheelers, and then you're off. We had no problems with the equipment, the price was affordable and well worth it, and everyone was super nice and helpful.. GREAT EXPERIENCE! read more

WORST PLACE!!! We were pointed to a crappy old ATV that doesn't have a back protection board behind the feet. The training staff was extremely irresponsible and didn't tell us anything about this. Two of us got really bad injured because the feet fall into the gap and caught by the wheels, and the entire backside of the leg was skinned. And their beachside staff were joking at our bleeding legs. I took photos, we got the only one that doesn't have the back board, and the staff said "it's just an old model, every car is different, every car is dangerous, I've been injured too, it sucks, but you signed the wavier, so is not our thing. We don't do refunds and we don't have firstaid" HOW HELPFUL, JERKS!!! The wavier doesn't say anything about your crappy malfunction junkyard cars!! read more

Everything about my ATV experience was awesome, except for BJ's. They have zero customer service skills. They treat you like cattle and don't explain how everything works clearly. After you come back in from riding they "inspect" the bikes. They (a nineteen year old) told me I bent a steering column. It looked fine to me (and the 10 guys in my party, including engineers) and looked like every other bike out there. They even admitted that they send the bikes out in the condition that my "broken" bike came back in. However, they forced me to pay for the broken part. Frankly, there was nothing broken. They just picked me out of the group and decided that they would charge me for a part that has many years of wear. I looked at the bikes and they are manufactured in 2006. They are all extremely worn and damaged. There are many other options for ATV rentals in this area so take your money elsewhere. EDIT: I would like to add, after reading the comment by the owner, that these people are also not truthful. They claim that 4 people rolled the ATV's and that they only charged one of us (so really they cut us a break). This simply is not what happened. If they want to pretend on Yelp to save face, fine, but you don't fool me and won't ever again. read more

First, I'd like to say that I rarely leave reviews unless I feel like there is important information people need to know. The experience started off pleasant with the workers at the shop. When we got to the beach to pick up our atv's. The "trainer" was extremely rude when we asked a question. One of his response was, "I don't know what to tell you. I said it 4 times". Whhaaaa??? Another incident was when we return our atv, I fed one of the workers dog water and he said, "I don't know what you have, don't feed my dog" in a rude tone. Couldn't you have said it in a nicer way? Anyways, the atv experience itself was amazing but the people are horrible except for the people at the main shop. As mentioned before, the people at the main shop was awesome. Just finished a two hour rental session with these guys today. Check in was a breeze as i read the information from their website and used these reviews for help. Samantha checked us in and pretty much told us all we needed to know. I make a request for a reservation through their website. When they give u a call to confirm, there will be a $100 deposit required ( it'll be credited to your overall bill ). You get to their main office, sign some papers and get fitted for a helmet/goggles and then you'll get directions on where to go, to get your ATVs. The guys helping us get our ATVs set up and how to properly operate them were awesome and informative. Overall it was a pretty fun and enjoyable experienece thanks to the staff at BJs. Not sure if they are the cheapest or whatever, but it was all worth it. Tips : Check in on yelp and get the gas fee waived. Deposit is required when you sign your papers at the office, use cash you'll get right back when you're done read more

I have mixed emotions about BJ's ATV Rental. I thought the price was appropriate, $45 for 2 hours on a Yamaha Grizzly 125. I'll probably want to upgrade next time though. We had parked our car in their parking lot and took a "shuttle" to the ATVs. This "shuttle" was some guy's truck filled with sand and a not-so-friendly dog. It was pretty dirty. The second time we rode the truck back to our car, I noticed a fresh wet stain on my seat. I wouldn't be surprised if Homie (the dog) had peed there... Anyway, I had a great time with my ATV, however I couldn't accelerate fast enough to go up larger dunes. That's why I'm going to go for a larger ATV next time. My friends and I stayed together since there is no one out there to help you if something happens. Well, something did happen. All of us were crossing this narrow area, but my friend didn't speed up enough. The right side of her ATV caught the edge of the hill and it threw her off. Somehow she was able to land OK, but her ATV was upside-down and basically on top of her. She was holding it up when I got to her. I came down to hold up her ATV so that she could get out from underneath it. I let go of it as soon as she got out and it just rolled down the hill. Both of us flipped it right-side-up, but saw fuel or some liquid leaking out of the seat. I was trying to open up the seat, but it wouldn't budge. My friend didn't want to take any risks so she asked for us to get help. Once "help" came, he just hopped on the ATV, drove it out of the ditch, and said to us "you couldn't do that?" Bitch, please! Ugh. Of course we could've done that, but there's stuff leaking from the ATV. And for that, it cost us an extra $25 for the "help" to arrive and $5 for a broken flag. He didn't even ask if we were OK. He just drove the ATV out of the ditch and took off. We all scrambled back to the base before our 2 hours was up since we didn't want to incur anymore fees. Service was not that great. Our instructor almost forgot to give us some safety speech before we were allowed to leave the 15 mph zone. I think I reminded him of it since I was going above 15 mph in their 15 mph zone. Of course... I wasn't told anything of the 15 mph zone until afterward. Also, I was given a helmet that was partially broken. The top lid of the helmet had plastic that broke off so it wouldn't stay screwed in. I didn't know this until the wind blew the plastic piece upward while I was riding. Annoying. read more

TL;DR - If you do not have a reservation, do not bother dropping in unless you like gambling your wait time. Last Sunday, my BFF and I decided that we would do a last minute Monday day trip to SLO to hang out at the beach and go ATVing. The following day, we did exactly just that and literally drove down at 8 AM from the Bay Area. BJ's was one of two places that I had bookmarked after doing some quick research on the best places to go ATVing. Because it was so last minute, I had tried to make a quick request in the morning to be contacted about reservations via e-mail, hoping that they might just take us in without reservation (or with if they got back to me/saw my request in time). Upon arrival, we stand in a single line of which we hear that they take reservations first only. Okay, that's fine, we'll wait till we're at the front of the line to see what happens. When we get to the front of the line (after 20 minutes of waiting already), the man asks if I have a reservation and I say no and explain that I had requested to be contacted but did not hear back in time, but that I understand given the short notice. Was there something that he could do for us given we just drove 3 hours down to do ATVing? No. There was not. He said that he takes reservations only first. I asked him, so does that mean that you're literally going to go down this entire line to check for a reservation, and that even if someone gets into line (20 minutes after I did) and happens to have a reservation, that you will take them first? Yes, he said. That's when I was extremely unhappy with the way that this business services it's customers. There's a single line that services both reservations and drop-ins, but priority will always go to those with a reservation. So basically if you're a drop-in customer, you're gambling your wait time by standing in line hoping that as he goes through each person in line, that no one behind you has a reservation. If someone by chance happens to get in line behind you, even though you've been waiting in front for the last 20 minutes (like I have), he will take that person first. WHAT THE HELL?! That made me so mad. You should either have two separate lines to service both (one for reservations and one for drop-ins) where you have a system for every reservation or cancelled reservation you have at a certain time, you'll take the next drop-in.... or some sort of system that I can understand what my sense of wait would be like!!! Or you just have a policy of reservations only. I respect and understand reservations but perpetuated long waits are not things a prospective customer would like to hear... My BFF kept waiting in line while I walked outside to give a quick call to another competing ATV company (the other of my one of two), and we were able to get a reservation at 2 PM instead of having to wait another indefinite wait time here. After leaving, to top off the bad situation, my BFF told me that she overheard the three ladies behind us making reservations (got the idea of making reservations from us but they didn't know we were calling somewhere else) and secretly called BJ's while they were in line, and made a reservation for 11:30 AM (time was currently 11:20 AM). They were speaking with the lady across the counter just 10 feet away and managed to book a reservation even though they were behind us... meaning that they would've been serviced next because they now had a "reservation" even though we've been waiting much longer than they have and were in front of them. Are you kidding me??? Props to you three ladies for playing the game well, but I am much happier to go to another business than to wait in a line at BJ's. For a place that prides itself in servicing it's customers, BJ's was a complete disappointment. I would not recommend anyone with the intent of a drop-in to come here at all. read more

I've been lagging on writing my review because I was so unhappy with the customer service in the end, I didn't want to re-live it and upset myself again. We drove out 4 hours to ATV for our first time on the weekend of 7/18/15. We were told that if we take the shuttle from the the check-in area out to the ATV area on the beach it would be a small extra fee each and we would have to come back. OR we could drive our own cars there and just leave our helmets and things so we wouldn't have to come back so that's what we did. When being taught how to use the ATV, the instructor/worker was talking very fast. I mean I understood he wanted to get through it especially because it's our rental time we paid for. But because he was talking very fast we had questions here and there. The worker seemed annoyed every time we asked... But once we got it, we were just excited to finally ride we didn't mind it too much. We had a blast out there! You do really have to be careful when approaching each dune because you don't see how deep it is until you're on top. My favorite part was riding thru the sand where it was tiny bumps because it felt like you were riding on waves. But on the way back my little sister fell off her ATV and it flipped over so gas was leaking on it. We restarted it for her but the ATV was very hot and especially with the gas everywhere we didn't feel it was safe to ride back. My lil sister was crying and very scared and kept insisting on walking back. We weren't sure on what to do so we just rode her back and told the workers what happen. The first thing he said was "And you just left it there??" And our response was "oh sorry it's our first time so we didn't know what to do cause of the gas." And he was just like "okay but you don't just leave it there." NOT EVEN CARING ABOUT HER WELL BEING AT ALL. And she was just standing in front of him still scared. I get that your upset we left it out there and we apologized that it was our fault but at your job, you must be professional. And if your upset you hide it because that's what customer service is about. Anyway, we then all started getting our helmets together to leave there so we can leave. He then tells us we can't leave our helmets there and we have to take them back... And that we couldn't leave until the ATV we left was back. I agreed about waiting for the ATV to get back but I was explaining how we were told we could leave the helmets there once we were done, he just blew off what I was saying and kept repeating we had to bring them back. WHAT WAS THE POINT OF US DRIVING OUR OWN CARS THERE THEN? Our whole point of us not taking that shuttle was so that we didn't have to go back there and stay on the beach! I was just so shocked and upset about this person. I didn't know if he was having a bad day... Or if he just hates his job but I was REALLY UPSET. I walked to my car and called the shack where we had did all the paper work and got our helmets and spoke with the lady about our experience. I had to set a complaint or I wanted SOMEONE from the company to know how upsetting it was. I had told her that I was going to wait for him to get the ATV and I was just going to return the helmets and leave.. And she was okay with it. Once I got there we talked about it more, but of course all they could do was apologize. The ladies were very very nice. It just sucks that that young man had to ruin our trip with his attitude. Next time I go back, I'm going with a different ATV company. A few of my friends and cousins had went to Pismo couple weeks later. I was like this is my first time so and all so she knew what my experience was. She just didn't sound too enthusiastic....didn't sound like she had a personality. I made my reservations: for 1030am. But my friend was an hour late..so at 10am I told them the situation. They said it would be ok. 11:40 we go in and they say they gave our bikes away. Next available is at 3pm (but no guarantee). They cheat with people. While booking at their shop, they asked us if we need automatic or semi automatic and they do not mention at all that automatic is 150cc and semi automatic comes with 250cc. They try to fool by saying that it's same price and we opted for automatic and when we asked her to change to all of them semi automatic, she didn't change it by saying that you will be able to change at the location anytime between both of them. It does not matter and she smartly didn't change But the reality is after reaching to the beach, their workers who manage rentals and stuff directly tell you, you will only get what you opted for. I want to be clear from the get-go that the ATV'ing experience and riding is amazing and incredibly fun. That is easily 5 stars in terms of "fun-ness". However, the staff at BJ's ranged from apathetic "not give a shit" to incredibly curt and rude, to very helpful and friendly. Our first impression was the front desk person who gave us the waivers and forms to sign. It was all very standard until she asked if we wanted us to drive our cars to the ATV location on the beach or get a ride. We asked some details about it but it was only after several rounds of questions that we learned driving our own cars would cost $5 per car compared to not being charged at all if we got a ride from the employees. We asked if it was difficult to drive on the beach and she said no, but decided to get a ride as it was free anyway. During the entire conversation, she was very short and snappy to us. I'm sure she was stressed about something else but it felt like she was taking it out on our group which was odd. What we learned when we got to the beach is unless you have a SUV with decent ground clearance, 4WD and huge tires, it's not recommended at all to drive on the beach. We saw vans, and sedans all get stuck on the soft sand turning their wheels uselessly. The 2nd employee we met who drove us on the beach was one of the most helpful people there as he gave us tips on how to ride the ATVs, what to look out for, and the dangers of taking your car out onto the soft sand. I really wish the person at the front desk had that conversation with us in telling us the risk of getting stuck in the sand and recommending to not do it if we didn't have a vehicle with high ground clearance, proper tires and 4WD. The 3rd employee we met who gave us the lesson in riding the ATVs did not give a shit at all. He ran through some memorized checklist procedures of how to start and drive but considering most of the people in our group were absolute beginners he lost a lot of us and we had to ask a lot of questions to even feel comfortable enough to leave the lot. A large portion of my party doesn't know how to drive a manual transmission so asking them to shift a semi-auto ATV (they were out of automatic ATVs for adults) means you'll have to spend a tiny bit more amount of time explaining when to shift and why you need to shift and he did not even bother to do that. My friends who either had a tiny bit of ATV experience or manual transmission experience basically had to teach the rest of the group the basics of shifting. Finally the actual ATV'ing happened and once we were all comfortable with the ATVs we had a blast. It was so much fun to drive around on the dunes and just floor it across the sand. People were super nice in helping people to get unstuck on the hills and soft sand so definitely had a great experience. When we came back and turned in everything and returned to the front office to return our helmets and goggles, the front desk person (different than the first we met) was super helpful in recommending dinner places to us and overall being really friendly. So overall, we all loved the ATV riding itself, but the customer service of this specific establishment was all over the spectrum raging from rude to amazing. read more

Great service at the office, but not so great service when you're actually at the rentals at the beach. A few things to note about ATVing: - Take the free shuttle. If not, you have to pay a $5 fee to drive your car along the beach highway to the actual location. Or you could just park somewhere nearby and walk the mile (which we did). - Get the Honda 250EX rather than the Grizzly 125. The people who got the Grizzly got stuck A LOT while going uphill. Waste of time and money. - Utilize more than just the first gear. When you need to go uphill, it's best to pick up momentum by using the 2nd to 4th gear. Or you'll get stuck. - You'll get stuck a lot, so be ready to reverse to get out. - Going downhill is not as bad as you think it is. - Wear sun block/long sleeves, and sunglasses. If you go on a sunny day like I did, you will get burned if you're not prepared. - There's a donut hole in the riding area if you go more to the right. - As you go more to the right in the riding area, there's a plain that's more flat than the other areas. That area is good for testing out your speed by cranking up to the 4th gear. - The instructions were very short. The instructor seemed terribly bored and languished over each word in his sentences. Didn't really like to answer questions, so I'll just tell you here how to drive the damn thing (if you get the Honda 250EX). 1.) The gas accelerator is on the right handle. You'll use your thumb to accelerate. Be prepared for your right thumb being sore after riding for two hours. Also wearing gloves helps dampen the vibration from the ATV. 2.) The right pedal is the brake. Press down to brake. We had so much fun for our first time! We went on Easter weekend and were sure that it would get a little hectic but was so much fun. I made a reservation a week in advance which saved us a huge headache. Sherry and Jordan were super helpful and patient, even though we knew they were overwhelmed with people coming and all the paper work. Their directions and instructions on the dunes were super thorough and clear. Once we get to the dunes, our driver was super funny, which helped ease my nerves because I was super scared. All the atv's are in decent shape, but it's a tourist attraction so it's obvious they've had plenty of fun. This experience was so much fun! Everyone should do it if you're in the area. It gets crazy in the dunes but mostly with the regulars. If you're aware of your surroundings, you'll be fine. Would totally do it again. Everyone should. read more

We went on Memorial Day. It was extremely busy and we waited an hour even with reservations. Not complaining, as it was a holiday. Not sure how long the wait is on regular weekends. You first go to their off site location. Then you have the option to drive up on the beach to the actual rental location or parking lot and wait for a shuttle. The shuttle wait isn't too long as the driver drives back and forth all day. So cool how cars can just drive on the sand! I've never seen that many cars so near the ocean before. It's crazy on the beach Memorial Day! Not to mention cars with confederate & skull flags... But that's another story. Anyways, the staff was all very friendly. Helmets and goggles are included. Check in for free gas. Not sure how much this usually goes for as it was my first time. There are around 6 other ATV rental places you will see in the same area. We chose BJ's cause the check in offer and numerous pleasant Yelp reviews. Be careful when going up big hills ESP if it's you're first time. Expect to get stuck. Girls, I suggest you go with at least one strong guy or very strong girl.. Otherwise you will waste your time waiting to get rescued. It took me a while to get it down cause I don't know how to drive manual (yet). But they also have automatic ones available. 4 different ATVs to be exact. The whole experience was great and so much fun! I will definitely be back if the wait isn't as long. I think the 2 hour rental is plenty for first timers. Take a bandanna if you don't want to eat sand. Closed toe shoes & long pants are required. Your shoes will get drenched in sand. Sand will even end up inside your socks somehow. It was our first time atving & boyyy was it smakin. if you're in the area get to it! But becareful, make sure you scope the area there might be little kids on the other side or a 30 foot dune drop. But On our way back we had an accident on the dunes, my little cousin had the ATV flipped on top of her & she could burrly walk :'( so we had to leave the ATV behind bc gasoline spilled all over it & over flooded even when we stood it backup.. We decided it would be more safe for her to ride with one of us on the way back because no one should drive the atv in that condition.. - They were concerned about the ATV make sure somehow you bring it back, don't leave it unattended because someone might steal it! *check in on yelp, get some free gas , make sure you get some goggles to protect your eyes from sand read more
