We visited Pismo Beach over the weekend and ATV was highly recommended. We yelp a few places but BJ's ATV got the highest rating so we went ahead with them. We got there just when they were opened and the ladies at the front desk was super nice. We didn't have reservation but they accommodated us even though we had 10 adults and 3 kids. The price was reasonable and they even gave us some discount for a large group. KUDDO to that!!! If you have a GOPRO, they can provide you the helmet with the GOPRO mount for free & that includes goggle too. When we arrived on the beach where the ATV was located at and the guys were very helpful. They gave us instructions on how to ride the ATV and was really good with the kids. If it's your first time, go with the full automatic ATV but if you are more adventurous and love the power then go with the semi-auto ones. After the helpful instructions with the map on our hands, we were off to our adventure. Two hours was a good length of time to ride if it's your first time. The kids ATV got stuck a few times which delayed our returning time but they were cool with it. We just called the front office to let them know the situation & they told us to take our time. 2 hours of ATVing for $68 because we had a 10% discount for group of 10. The price includes a $5 gas surcharge. The office is actually a few miles away from where you ATV. You pay at the office and pick up your helmets here. Then you drive out to the beach, which costs $5 per car. Learning how to ride an ATV took a good 20-30 minutes to become comfortable, but it was smooth sailing after that. The trick to not becoming stuck in the sand is to maintain a decent speed all the time and if it get a little bumpy, don't hesitate to stand up a bit. If you do get stuck, which happened quite often going up steep hills, you'll either need to downshift to gear 1 to muscle the ATV up, or go into reverse. I found a sweet location where we could gain some serious air and we went at it for about 30 minutes. Thankfully, no one was injured although a few people did tip their ATVs over. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Breaking off the flags here don't cost you any extra money, as long as you bring the flags back to them. If I ATV again, I'm definitely coming back to B J's. read more

The service was slow, and the manager was a bit crass/aggressive with his employees, but the dunes were amazing and the employees were very friendly helpful. I recommend renting for 2 hours; it give you plenty of time to have fun on the amazing dunes, but any more time and you'll get sore and tired When you show up, be prepared for a bit of a wait. Having a reservation can speed this up, but even with a reservation, it was ~20 min before we got to the counter. Don't bother with any of the upsells, you don't need the bandana to keep sand out of your mouth and sun glasses work just as well as rented goggles to keep sand out of you eyes (they'll stay on, don't worry). Once you've checked in and gotten your helmet, you'll have to drive down to the beach or take a shuttle. Parking can be a bit of a hassle by the beach, lots of spots are 2 hours only and you'll be out for ~3 hours if you booked the 2 hour trip. We parked in a 2 hour spot and didn't get ticketed, but no guarantees. After you park at the beach, theres a free shuttle that runs fairly often to take you to the dunes. Once you get set up with your ATV, you'll be able to drive on to the dunes. They are huge! You'll have a ton of fun, but remember a few things: - Go slow over the tops of hills, sometimes it's a dropoff on the other side! - Don't waste your time in 1st gear unless it's a really steep hill, 2nd gear is good for going up hills, kick it up into 3rd, 4th, or 5th to get some good speed on flat parts of downhill. - If you get stuck going up a hill, DO NOT keep trying to go up, you'll dig yourself in. Reverse back, get more speed, and try again. - Driving over the dune "cliffs" is actually really fun. Take it slow over the top, then throttle up all the way down and see how fast you can go! read more

Had a blast riding the atv on the sand dunes of pismo beach. The 2 hours were not nearly enough for an active person like me but for my buddies who are not as active it was more than enough from what they said. If you never ridden a motorcycle or don't have much experience with a bike I would be a bit careful and take your time to learn. The first 30-45 minutes was a learning curve and the rest we enjoyed going far back and riding the walls up high. A lot of people were having a hard time getting unstuck. A few recommendations would be to keep your speed and take the flattest route up or down the dunes. Have fun! read more

My wife, 10 yr old son and I went Tuesday morning (9am), no reservation. Emily helped us out with the paperwork and helmets. From the store we drove to Pier Ave. At the end of pier is a small parking lot to the right. Coming early helped as the lot was almost full. But we were told you can park on the streets, no meters. We walked down a small ramp to the beach where Anthony was waiting with a trailer of ATV's to drive us to the staging area a little further down the beach. When we got to the area, Zack was waiting to brief us on the rules and how to ride ATV's as well as some pointers on the better spots to go riding. They were all very friendly and helpful and just took out the stress for first time riders. They offer a variety of ATVs, the ones for kids and people weighing less than 130lbs (no gears) aren't as powerful so be careful when driving these, there are deep holes you can fall into and the ATV just won't have enough power to drive up and out off. But there are a lot of flat areas you can drive around which are near the campers. All in all we had a great time and will definitely try to come back. read more

Came to Pismo beach this past weekend and decided to go with BJ's because of their amazing reviews on service. Check-in went smoothly, pick-up and shuttle to the ATV's were on time (thanks Wayne), tips and instructions provided were helpful (unfortunately, I didn't listen very well & ate shit or should I say sand, literally). After the 2hrs were up, we got shuttled back to our car and realized the car keys were missing (thee worst thing that could happen while riding ATV's. Well not thee worst, at least I didn't sever a limb when I fell, but you get my drift). We called BJ's to dispatch the driver to check the back seat of the car which he did & on top of that he also scoured the sand where he took photos of us (no luck), Wayne drove all the way back to pick us up so we could search another area where we thought the keys might've fell. After 15-20 min. with no keys in sight, we took it as a loss and called the tow truck company to cut another key. The patience and assistance provided by Wayne and the rest of the staff was hands down the best service I've received in awhile. Although our day didn't end on a positive note. She processed 8 of us quickly and gave advice on what to expect. On the beach, Floyd promptly picked us up and drove us to the location. He was also very helpful. Atv was a blast. The directions given by the office was confusing because there are two desk and seems like one handle goggles and the other handle only atv. Very deceptive pricing scheme. At time of rental, the company states they will put a $100 security deposit on the rental, which supposedly was refundable after return of the vehicle rental. This was to be signed off by the ATV company at time of return. I was notified by the staff in the return trailer that my rental paperwork is signed and I should get a return on the $100 deposit. Days to weeks have passed and I did not receive the deposit back despite having a signed deposit return form. Several phone calls to them after were left unanswered. Now I have to go through the process of having my credit card company investigate these excess charges. In addition, in hindsight this is likely why the company brushes off customers who want a receipt of deposit refund after returning the ATV. They make you go out of your way to head back from the sand dunes to the original rental location to get a simple receipt. However they brushed off the notion, stating "we always clear the refunds by the end of the day." I highly recommend looking elsewhere for a more reputable company. read more

You have to go and buy tickets at their main location and from there you hv to drive to designated place. I realize we went on a busy holiday weekend, but honestly in all the lines we waited in both pre and post ride, was a total of 4 hours, when we only rode for 2. The check-in process was a complete unorganized disaster with a lot of people complaining in front and behind us in line. The staff were pretty un-professional, and were obviously overwhelmed and under staffed for it being a holiday weekend. Our reservation was for 11:30, and after over a 2.5 hour wait to get on our ATV's, we were finally able to get on them at 1:55, which meant that we missed our next activity reservation which was scheduled at 3:00pm because this entire process took far far too long. We had a great time for the 2 hours on the ATV's but when we got back to return them, we had to wait another hour just to turn in the helmet and goggles. Their process for check-in, once you are on the beach, and check-out is soooo awful! I don't know if it was like this for all the other ATV companies out there, but this experience put me in a bad mood for the rest of the day. This operation makes atving almost too simple. One person in your group must take the on-line safety training, but within 30 min. of arriving in Pismo Beach just about anyone can be jumping dunes. So BJ's strong point is enforcing the potential dangers - they do that with blood, death, and gore stories, but more memorably through comical pirate patter... maybe stand-up traffic school has proved that humor helps one retain the material better? Lots of awesome dunes and we did spend some time digging ourselves out and figuring out how to get the ATV into neutral (haha) but despite that it was well worth spending the money and 2 hours was plenty! A friend recommended this place to check out since it was my first time in Pismo Beach. We booked an early appointment around 10am and it was a breeze to just get all checked in and given instructions. The HUGE bummer is if you didn't drive down there but opted to Lyft. The meeting point on the beach is NOT walking distance so once you get a Lyft TO the BJ's ATV Rentals facility, you'll need to opt for another Lyft to get to the beach. It's not that big of a deal but that was our biggest pet peeve. They were quick to tell us the instructions on how to use the actual ATV but it was super easy and understandable anyways. I was fortunate to get one of the newer models so those were a breeze. The prices are fair and they do have the deposit they want in cash. You'll have to lyft back to the place to get your cash back but I'm assuming if you do it via ATM card, you wouldn't need to make that extra trip back. Have fun! And pay attention when you're out in the dunes. read more

Our first ATV experience was fun overall. However they need to hire friendlier ladies at the desk. I don't know if they own the shop, but they're absolutely trash w/ customer service. My sister's ATV kept dying so we called them. They blamed my sister saying she probably hit a switch & said that we should've been back already & hung up on her. First of all, how do we get back on time if one of our ATVs kept dying. We had to drive back to get my sister ourselves so many times just to help her restart it. & even if my sister hit a switch, maybe be friendlier & GUIDE a first time ride on what to do instead of being accusatory. So I called back & had to be an Asian Karen. Same lady who spoke to my sister said she told her she would send somebody out for us.. NO she didn't because she hung up on my sister. She then interrupted me & said, "Okay have a good night bye" & hung up on me. I hate to have to yell at someone, but maybe next time don't BLAME YOUR CUSTOMERS for one of your faulty ATVs & proceed to say we should've been back on time. We'll be trying one of the other rental companies next time & never return here. The guys at the beach managing the ATVs & shuttle service were great though! The place is easy to find, the people are friendly, and the equipment is ready to be used. Some people say the woman at the front desk has no personality or whatever but I think she just has a different type of sense of humor. I can understand why some people wouldn't like it though. She seemed fine to me since I can understand her humor. The equipment was good to go from the helmets to the ATVs. We had no issue at all. If any issue at all, one of my friends rolled his ATV over out in the dunes and broke off the flag connected to the ATV. They were nice enough to understand the situation and not charge us extra for the broken flag. The two men instructing us on how to use the ATVs were hilarious. They were very thorough and entertaining in explaining to us the code of conduct and laws related to riding ATVs. This may be my first experience ever riding ATVs but it was a great experience. This place has gotten ridiculously expensive. Unless you want to pay $300 for two people, don't bother. I came in because I had received a pamphlet from the visitor center at pismo beach and the pricing seemed reasonable. When I went into the store, the girl said that pricing was before covid. I understand that small businesses are hurting but seriously? I doubt this business is going to continue running at the current prices for long unfortunately. In addition, the person there made no apologies or even offered a small discount for the inconvenience. We had driven 4 hours so we did not want to turn away disappointed but it was off season so I felt like they could have been more accommodating. The experience itself was great but the parking lot near the dunes was in bad shape. Lots of sand (expected) but we saw multiple cars get stuck and needed to be pulled out. Wish we were warned about that. There are plenty of other options for ATVs so I would just recommend comparing prices. read more

My family of 5 made reservations for a Saturday at 1 pm. We got there at 12 (and I want to point out this was the first day that they had opened up their business in 14 months, so yes they were backed up) and did not get checked in until 2:40ish pm. We did not start riding the ATVs until 3:30. The problem wasn't waiting for our turn, the problem was that the front desk worker (blonde hair) would come out to ask who had made reservations and we would say we had one at 1 pm and she told us we would be up next, but when she back out she decide to take a White family that was BEHIND us in line and had the SAME time in reservation as mine. It threw us off but continued to wait, second time around she takes another White family that had the same time in reservations as us. When she FINALLY called us in she told us she was "sorry" that she took them in, but she didn't "want to sit there and argue with them". Like how unprofessional is that? In that case my family could have made a big scene and gotten in front of everyone else that was already waiting... I'm never the type of assume it is a racism thing but this for sure felt like it given that she did it TWICE. read more

I would like to give negative or zero stars :( :( - Short staffed, Under experienced, Highly disorganized and Racist Entire ATV experience right from reaching the check in point to checkout after riding ATV for 1 hr took around 5+ hours even after making a reservation and paying upfrount. I had a reservation for 10 for my family for July 4th Sunday at noon for 1 hr for 2 Pioneers (4 people ATV) and 2 - single Seater 250 ATVs. As per the confirmation email, we reached around 11.20 am so that we get checked in and head over to riding ATVs. Story Begins Here: A) Checkin 1) There was a long queue of around 10-12 different reservations ahead of us and every reservation was taking around 10-15 mins for checking out even though they had paid the money while doing the reservation online 2) Finally after waiting for more than 90 mins, we were first in the queue around 1:00 pm. 3) There were two women in the counter checking the confirmations/reservations with directions from blonde hair lady. When our turn was about to come at 12.45 pm, one of the women in the 1st counter asked us to wait since its a group of 10 people, and she asked group of 2 or 3 people behind us to check in. (First group of 2 checked in, 2nd group of 2-3 people checked in and we were still waiting) This is where I went to spoke to blonde hair lady, that I am ok splitting the reservation to make it faster but she kept on insisting once the previous group of 10 people are done checking in at counter # 2, we will take you in. Finally after lot of back and forth, we were finally checked in at 1:15 pm Now we were hoping things will go smooth and we will be done by 2.45 pm :( B) PICK UP (Beach Entrance to BJS ATV Booth) Since the checkin counter is 1.5 miles from dunes, we have to drive our car with checked in confirmation and search for parking near beach entrance (which is hard over the weekend as they were only allowing camping cars over the beach). We reached the pick up point at beach entrance 1:45 pm after finding the parking point. Note: They only have two pick up cars - one seven seater and one 12-14 seater When we reached the pick up point, there was a seven seater car waiting for pick up. We asked the person riding that car (mexican driver), that we are ok to split up like 7 and then next 3, but he mentioned that you are first in the queue for big van that is coming. While we were waiting there, there was another group of 12 people (mexican) came in, and another group of 10 people (asian) came in. To our surprise, the 7 seater car divided that group in to 7 and then 5. He picked up 7 people from the mexican group and dropped them off and came back and we are still waiting. Finally the big van came and 7 seater came. 7 Seater picked up the remaining 5 from the mexican group. As per his directions, we were first in the queue for big van. We just sat inside the car (2 people) and now the 7 seater car driver mentions that other group of 10 people (asian) were here before us. Hence, we need to get out of the car, and they were let go. We were still waiting and two groups of 12 people (mexican) and 10 people (asian) are all picked up. Finally, we got picked up and reached the BJ's ATV booth on beach at 2.35 (after a wait of 40 mins) Finally, we think we will get the ATvs, but story does not stop here. C) BJ's ATV booth We headed over the booth at 2.40 pm assuming we will get kick started in 5-10 mins. When we showed the reservation, guy over there mentions I don't have any 4 seater car and need to wait for another hour. This completely threw me off. Hence, I called BJ's ATV Helpline number and when I explained the whole story, she mentioned that your reservation was at noon but you checked in at 1:15 pm. hence 1 hr wait should not be a problem. Again, I need to explain the whole story. Entire group was totally frustrated and we decided to cancel the ATVs and asked for the refund. That's when, she told me she will get back to be in 5 mins. Before we reached there, they had 1 - 4 seater ATV but as i mentioned above, we were waiting at pick up point and other groups were picked up first, they already got 4 seater ATVs. Finally after 10 mins, I again called them if they have any update and to my surprise, from nowhere they got two 4 seater ATVs in a truck. Finally at 3.15 pm we started riding ATV on sand dunes. This is the first time I rented ATVs from BJs and will never ever repeat the mistake. In my previous rental experiences with ATVs, I have done from Sun buggy and Steve's and overall experience was really good. I totally understand due to long weekend, you can expect a delay 1- 1.5 hr but definitely not 3 - 3.5 hrs read more

I'll start with the archaic check in process. It's not near the beach and it takes them at least 15 minutes per person in your group to verify and sign paperwork. This could all be done online when you book but nope let's spend 45 minutes doing this so we can eat in to your reservation time. Secondly the vehicles you rent feel like a bait and switch. They are run down, broken and missing features. We had 3 atvs, two of them could t reverse, one kept stalling and shutting down when you let off the throttle. The 300 atv was missing the gear lever to shift to reverse. I got stuck and a local helped me and he said he's never seen an atv like mine before and said it was a death trap. After this experience I cannot recommend this rental over the other 4 that are located right near the beach entrance. read more

Best experience and service!! =) I tried to do the reservations on their online website, but when I realized that I didn't get any confirmation back.. I finally called BJ'S ATV Rental and the lady on the phone was so helpful! She tried to look me up since I told her I did try to reserve online but she said that she couldn't find my name so she just helped me on the phone to reserve my boyfriend and I a spot. I felt so bad because I didn't have any of my information or credit card to pay over the phone but she was nice enough and said to just pay once we get there. It was finally the day of our reservation and the lady in the front desk was very helpful and informative! It was our first time ATV-ing and she gave us plenty of do's and don'ts. Honestly.. all of the employees at BJ's ATV rental are amazing!! Very informative, very lively, and helpful. Thank you everyone for making first time ATV experience go smoothly. We will be definitely coming back with our big family next time!! Some tips: There is a $100 deposit for each rental bike - I would recommend to bring cash so you can get your deposit back same day! I did mines cash & card (the money came back into my account I think 3-4 days after) BRING SUNGLASSES! Or anything that will protect your eyes from the sand Also if it's your first time and are afraid to go fast.. don't worry, go at your own speed!! I tried to do some "cool" tricks or follow whatever my boyfriend was doing and well.. I got stuck three times and luckily my boyfriend was able to get my bike out If your bike does get stuck in the sand and you are unable to get it out.. if the employees need to come and help you out there will be a charge, I believe it's $25 Hope these tips will help!! =) read more

Staff was helpful. I went here for my first time and I had so much fun! I definitely was a nervous wreck before actually getting on the ATV. But everyone was informative and answered all my questions which helped me to be at ease. I recommend going as early as possible so that you have more area to ride around.
