I've been lagging on writing my review because I was so unhappy with the customer service in the end, I didn't want to re-live it and upset myself again. We drove out 4 hours to ATV for our first time on the weekend of 7/18/15. We were told that if we take the shuttle from the the check-in area out to the ATV area on the beach it would be a small extra fee each and we would have to come back. OR we could drive our own cars there and just leave our helmets and things so we wouldn't have to come back so that's what we did. When being taught how to use the ATV, the instructor/worker was talking very fast. I mean I understood he wanted to get through it especially because it's our rental time we paid for. But because he was talking very fast we had questions here and there. The worker seemed annoyed every time we asked... But once we got it, we were just excited to finally ride we didn't mind it too much. We had a blast out there! You do really have to be careful when approaching each dune because you don't see how deep it is until you're on top. My favorite part was riding thru the sand where it was tiny bumps because it felt like you were riding on waves. But on the way back my little sister fell off her ATV and it flipped over so gas was leaking on it. We restarted it for her but the ATV was very hot and especially with the gas everywhere we didn't feel it was safe to ride back. My lil sister was crying and very scared and kept insisting on walking back. We weren't sure on what to do so we just rode her back and told the workers what happen. The first thing he said was "And you just left it there??" And our response was "oh sorry it's our first time so we didn't know what to do cause of the gas." And he was just like "okay but you don't just leave it there." NOT EVEN CARING ABOUT HER WELL BEING AT ALL. And she was just standing in front of him still scared. I get that your upset we left it out there and we apologized that it was our fault but at your job, you must be professional. And if your upset you hide it because that's what customer service is about. Anyway, we then all started getting our helmets together to leave there so we can leave. He then tells us we can't leave our helmets there and we have to take them back... And that we couldn't leave until the ATV we left was back. I agreed about waiting for the ATV to get back but I was explaining how we were told we could leave the helmets there once we were done, he just blew off what I was saying and kept repeating we had to bring them back. WHAT WAS THE POINT OF US DRIVING OUR OWN CARS THERE THEN? Our whole point of us not taking that shuttle was so that we didn't have to go back there and stay on the beach! I was just so shocked and upset about this person. I didn't know if he was having a bad day... Or if he just hates his job but I was REALLY UPSET. I walked to my car and called the shack where we had did all the paper work and got our helmets and spoke with the lady about our experience. I had to set a complaint or I wanted SOMEONE from the company to know how upsetting it was. I had told her that I was going to wait for him to get the ATV and I was just going to return the helmets and leave.. And she was okay with it. Once I got there we talked about it more, but of course all they could do was apologize. The ladies were very very nice. It just sucks that that young man had to ruin our trip with his attitude. Next time I go back, I'm going with a different ATV company. A few of my friends and cousins had went to Pismo couple weeks later. I told them about my experience and they chose to go with a different company as well. read more

I called BJ's as I read the good reviews on yelp: when I called the lady on the phone wasn't one of those friendly types. I was like this is my first time so and all so she knew what my experience was. She just didn't sound too enthusiastic....didn't sound like she had a personality. I made my reservations: for 1030am. But my friend was an hour late..so at 10am I told them the situation. They said it would be ok. 11:40 we go in and they say they gave our bikes away. Next available is at 3pm (but no guarantee). They will call us at 1pm to followup. No call. ahh whatever...its not like they are the only show in town. read more

I want to be clear from the get-go that the ATV'ing experience and riding is amazing and incredibly fun. That is easily 5 stars in terms of "fun-ness". However, the staff at BJ's ranged from apathetic "not give a shit" to incredibly curt and rude, to very helpful and friendly. Our first impression was the front desk person who gave us the waivers and forms to sign. It was all very standard until she asked if we wanted us to drive our cars to the ATV location on the beach or get a ride. We asked some details about it but it was only after several rounds of questions that we learned driving our own cars would cost $5 per car compared to not being charged at all if we got a ride from the employees. We asked if it was difficult to drive on the beach and she said no, but decided to get a ride as it was free anyway. During the entire conversation, she was very short and snappy to us. I'm sure she was stressed about something else but it felt like she was taking it out on our group which was odd. What we learned when we got to the beach is unless you have a SUV with decent ground clearance, 4WD and huge tires, it's not recommended at all to drive on the beach. We saw vans, and sedans all get stuck on the soft sand turning their wheels uselessly. The 2nd employee we met who drove us on the beach was one of the most helpful people there as he gave us tips on how to ride the ATVs, what to look out for, and the dangers of taking your car out onto the soft sand. I really wish the person at the front desk had that conversation with us in telling us the risk of getting stuck in the sand and recommending to not do it if we didn't have a vehicle with high ground clearance, proper tires and 4WD. The 3rd employee we met who gave us the lesson in riding the ATVs did not give a shit at all. He ran through some memorized checklist procedures of how to start and drive but considering most of the people in our group were absolute beginners he lost a lot of us and we had to ask a lot of questions to even feel comfortable enough to leave the lot. A large portion of my party doesn't know how to drive a manual transmission so asking them to shift a semi-auto ATV (they were out of automatic ATVs for adults) means you'll have to spend a tiny bit more amount of time explaining when to shift and why you need to shift and he did not even bother to do that. My friends who either had a tiny bit of ATV experience or manual transmission experience basically had to teach the rest of the group the basics of shifting. Finally the actual ATV'ing happened and once we were all comfortable with the ATVs we had a blast. It was so much fun to drive around on the dunes and just floor it across the sand. People were super nice in helping people to get unstuck on the hills and soft sand so definitely had a great experience. When we came back and turned in everything and returned to the front office to return our helmets and goggles, the front desk person (different than the first we met) was super helpful in recommending dinner places to us and overall being really friendly. So overall, we all loved the ATV riding itself, but the customer service of this specific establishment was all over the spectrum raging from rude to amazing. read more

Great service at the office, but not so great service when you're actually at the rentals at the beach. A few things to note about ATVing: - Take the free shuttle. If not, you have to pay a $5 fee to drive your car along the beach highway to the actual location. Or you could just park somewhere nearby and walk the mile (which we did). - Get the Honda 250EX rather than the Grizzly 125. The people who got the Grizzly got stuck A LOT while going uphill. Waste of time and money. - Utilize more than just the first gear. When you need to go uphill, it's best to pick up momentum by using the 2nd to 4th gear. Or you'll get stuck. - You'll get stuck a lot, so be ready to reverse to get out. - Going downhill is not as bad as you think it is. - Wear sun block/long sleeves, and sunglasses. If you go on a sunny day like I did, you will get burned if you're not prepared. - There's a donut hole in the riding area if you go more to the right. - As you go more to the right in the riding area, there's a plain that's more flat than the other areas. That area is good for testing out your speed by cranking up to the 4th gear. - The instructions were very short. The instructor seemed terribly bored and languished over each word in his sentences. Didn't really like to answer questions, so I'll just tell you here how to drive the damn thing (if you get the Honda 250EX). 1.) The gas accelerator is on the right handle. You'll use your thumb to accelerate. Be prepared for your right thumb being sore after riding for two hours. Also wearing gloves helps dampen the vibration from the ATV. 2.) The right pedal is the brake. Press down to brake. There is also a break handle on the top of the right handle, but they tell you to use that only when you get stuck on a hill and want to slowly reverse down. 3.) The left pedal lets you change gears. Simply press down to lower the gears, and click up to move gears (make sure your accelerator is gasing nearly all the way to be able to change gears). There are about 4 gears, so you'll be using the first one mostly in the beginning, and the 2-4 to pick up momentum to go up big hills. 4.) There's a right lever on the right side. After shifting down to neutral, hold this right lever down and shift down again to put it in reverse. Always watch out where you'll about to go (some steep cliffs), but don't be too timid. We went on Memorial Day. It was extremely busy and we waited an hour even with reservations. Not complaining, as it was a holiday. Not sure how long the wait is on regular weekends. You first go to their off site location. Then you have the option to drive up on the beach to the actual rental location or parking lot and wait for a shuttle. The shuttle wait isn't too long as the driver drives back and forth all day. So cool how cars can just drive on the sand! I've never seen that many cars so near the ocean before. It's crazy on the beach Memorial Day! Not to mention cars with confederate & skull flags... But that's another story. Anyways, the staff was all very friendly. Helmets and goggles are included. Check in for free gas. Not sure how much this usually goes for as it was my first time. There are around 6 other ATV rental places you will see in the same area. We chose BJ's cause the check in offer and numerous pleasant Yelp reviews. Be careful when going up big hills ESP if it's you're first time. Expect to get stuck. Girls, I suggest you go with at least one strong guy or very strong girl.. Otherwise you will waste your time waiting to get rescued. It took me a while to get it down cause I don't know how to drive manual (yet). But they also have automatic ones available. 4 different ATVs to be exact. The whole experience was great and so much fun! I will definitely be back if the wait isn't as long. I think the 2 hour rental is plenty for first timers. Take a bandanna if you don't want to eat sand. Closed toe shoes & long pants are required. Your shoes will get drenched in sand. Sand will even end up inside your socks somehow. But On our way back we had an accident on the dunes, my little cousin had the ATV flipped on top of her & she could burrly walk :'( so we had to leave the ATV behind bc gasoline spilled all over it & over flooded even when we stood it backup.. I rented a bike from this place and made a reservation for 3pm. Since it was labor day weekend, it was poppin so I would recommend making reservations if possible. The rental shop is less than a 5 minute drive from the Oceano Dune beach area, so you just get your paperwork and pay there. You can drive on the sand and go straight to their van area where you pick up your bike but make sure your car can handle driving on the sand. If not, you can park your car along the street or parking lot and get picked up by the company van straight to the rental spot with the bikes. Just call the number on the receipt for pick up. We had to wait a good 15 minutes before pick up. I dont think we got the chance to chose the bikes since we just wanted the basic ones but after all the fees, it cost $82 a person for two hours. The customer service from the shop and the van was great. They are really nice people despite their busy schedules. The only downside is that these bikes kept breaking down and could not take the steeper hills. It seriously broke down on me like 5 times, whether it was because it got stuck in a hole or the bike would not start all together. I had to call while I was out on the dune to ask what to do and they gave me instructions to rock the bike and put in neutral, etc. Girls should not ATV without guys because there was no way I could have gotten the bike out of the hole whatsover. It felt a little miserable because I was just helpless and its so frustrating that it kept breaking down. I think all rentals will have this issue unfortunately. If you want company and you dont wanna dig your rental out of the dunes, I would recommend the two person vehicle for sure. **TIPS** 1) Bring sunglasses so you dont have to rent their goggles. 2) If it is a hot day, you can wear a tank, shorts and sneakers. However, YOU MUST WEAR HIGH SOCKs. The heat near the pedals was unbearable and my skin was red and rashy. If you dont wear pants or tights, you have to wear high socks to cover your calves. It is something I wish I knew about before I got there. Trust. 3) If you are a girl, go with a guy or else you are screwed in the dunes. If anything, do the two person vehicle because those are hopefully powerful enough. 4) Sunblock it up. Its friggin hot. 5) Check in prior to paying and get a $5 discount. Came here with 4 of my friends, and none of us had gone ATV-ing before. All bright-eyed and excited, we step into this quaint little shop to find an older woman at the counter watching CNN and smiling at us. $70 and a "I won't sue if I die" waiver later, we were off and on our way down to the beach with helmet in hand. We park on the beach and notice that out of all the rental stands, B J's is the smallest with the least number of ATV's. No matter I guess, one is all I needed. There were two guys chilling in the RV next to the ATV's who ended up explaining things to us - they were friendly and clear with their directions. Even though we were newbies, they had no condescending tone and were willing to help out those in our group who had trouble shifting gears or whatnot. After a brief lesson (and I mean BRIEF - 30 seconds around the lot without any verbal instructions), we were OFF!! The actual ATV-ing part was a blast, even though I flipped mine over on top of me trying to race over a particularly high dune. I recommend it to ANYONE who wants a rush and isn't afraid of sand/dirt. The grounds is huge (larger than most college campuses), and there are a lot of people out there on different vehicles (Hummers, dirt bikes, bigger ATVs), so watch out. I broke the flag that stuck out of my ATV when it flipped, so when we came back the lady had to charge me 5 bucks. No biggie. Fun fun fun - 4 stars! read more

1. MAKE reservation! Well, I guess if they run out, then you can always go to their next door neighbor, ARNIES? We just made reservation since we went during the labor's day weekend 2. You come to the office first to fill out the paperwork before you actually head down to the beach. They have free shuttle from the beach to the actual location so take advantage of that and park somewhere on the street! Just wait near the entrance of the beach, and you'll see BJ's shuttle! It's FREE! 3. x 250EX ($70/2hrs) seems to be the most popular one there and it's semi-automatic btw. I didn't get that one but I heard it's not that hard to learn. x Grizzly ($45/2hrs).....I only got this because I was scared to drive the semi-automatic one but it was a fail! It's weaaaaaak therefor you'll get STUCK a lot when you go uphill.........so just pay the extra $25 and go with 250EX!!!! (If you do get stuck...just get out and lift the ATV up...it's not THAT heavy) 4. There's a $5 fuel surcharge per ATV btw. 5. If you want extra protection, bring goggles otherwise it's not needed! I had so much fun here today and highly recommend renting from BJ's ATV Rentals. The lady at the rental office was so nice and helpful. The drivers were friendly and quick on pick ups. Renting was easy. Drive to the rental office. Pay and sign some waivers. Cost was about $82 for 2 hrs. Drive to the parking lot at the beach where they'll pick you up and show you how to use the ATVs. Within a few minutes, you'll be riding the dunes. Tips*** 1. Bring some water. After 2 hrs your mouth will feel as dry as the sand. 2. Bring sunglasses because the sand can get into your eyes. 3. Bring a hoodie if you plan on coming late afternoon off season due to cooler weather. 4. Bring a cell phone incase you get stuck in some soft sand or your ATV is not working because you did something weird to it. 4. Check in on Yelp and get free gas. 5. A group of five of us wanted to go ATV-ing on Saturday so I called on Friday to make reservations. It was pretty pain-free. She took down my name, credit card information to hold the reservation, date/time of arrival, and number of people who were under and over 120 lbs (I guess this would change the type of ATV we would get). We arrived 30 minutes before our set time and since it wasn't busy, we were able to start the process early. Turns out that the lady at the counter had my name down but not how many people were in the group or which specific ATVs we needed (we all ended up with the same kind). She attributed to being drunk the day before while taking down our reservations... jokingly I think. We paid individually with our cards, tried on helmets, and were on our way. The process was completely pain free. We get to the beach where all the ATV rental companies are situated. Arnie's, Angello's and BJ's are all next to each other and out of the three, BJ's probably looks the least glamorous with not as many ATVs (perhaps they were all rented out). The two guys giving us an introduction were very friendly except they scared the crap out of us with information (cliffs, 7 people who died last year, etc.). After a couple minutes of instruction, we were on our way to two hours of nonstop fun. In the end, I'm glad they scared us because we might not have been as cautious. You really have to be careful on the sand dunes because of the random cliffs that you could end up flying over and dropping 10-20 feet straight to the bottom. We returned the ATVs, drove back to the rental site on Grand Ave., returned the helmets, then two of our guys who broke the flags had to pay $5 for each of them. First of all, I strongly recommend ATVing at Pismo Beach. It was great fun for the entire family. There are many vendors that rent ATVs here, and I strongly suggest you use someone else. We arrived at 12:45 for a 1 pm reservation. It was 2:15 before we finally reached our ATVs. There was a long line at the front desk, and they admitted they were understaffed. We got our paperwork done and drove out to the beach where we were told a white SUV would pick us up and take us to their lot....well, that was what we were told. We waited....and waited....and waited.... During this time, a competitor's bus came and went 3 times. After more than 45 minutes being stranded on the beach, it finally showed up. Of course, when it did there were more people at the stop then would fit in the SUV and a few had to wait for the next one. At this point, I told my family that we were leaving if we did not get on this one, I did not have time to wait another 45 minutes (fortunately, we got on and the others arrived at the lot shortly after we did). To make this worse, my ATV stalled several times and I had difficulty re-starting it. I took it back and they gave me another one, which had no further problems (and kind of rules out user error). The line, and even the trouble with the ATV, alone may have cost 1/2 star. But being stranded on the beach for so long was completely unacceptable. It made me feel as if they did not value my time, or my business I will go back to ATV at this beach, but will choose a different vendor. read more

Wow, what a blast. One of my friends and I just spent the afternoon today at the dunes, after a brief but detailed introduction by the guys at BJ's. I can't recommend this enough. You start off by going to BJ's, which is a small, almost rundown-looking shack near the beach. Inside was a nice lady and a scary waiver that basically, as she said, means "You're to blame for everything if anything happens and you can't ever sue us." Okay, so scary, but worth it. We signed and headed over to the dunes to meet with the instructors. Note that you have to drive your car on the beach, along with hundreds of other cars, and there's really no lanes, so be careful. The instructors were friendly, joking, and had some great speeches designed to scare kids and teens into being careful with the ATVs. As fun as ATVs are, they are not a toy, and you CAN get hurt, so it's good to instill a little respect for them up-front. If you've never ridden an ATV before, they'll start you off on a basic model that doesn't feel very powerful at first. You'll get stuck going up the dunes from time to time. That's part of the fun, and we quickly learned how to avoid that most of the time. A few tips from my experience: 1) WEAR SUNSCREEN! You'll get burnt out there pretty easily. Be especially careful on the hands. I also recommend some light gloves to protect the skin (I didn't do this, but my friend did, and the difference between our hands is night and day). 2) Wear a light sweater. It gets cold and windy while driving around the dunes. It was decently hot today, but I wore a light jacket anyway and was glad I did. 3) Wear sunglasses, and ask for goggles to put on top of them. They gave us the goggles without asking, and we almost didn't wear sunglasses, but you'll want to be able to see well without being blinded and without sand flinging up into your eyes. 4) Be very careful where you drive. They'll drill this into you, but it's important. Small slopes become large drops fast, and there are people everywhere. We came close to collisions a couple times. 5) Don't be too scared of downward slopes. If in doubt, check the angle from the other side. Some scary-looking slopes were actually not bad at all, but you'll want to check. If you see a kind of "bridge" of sand with plenty of tire tracks, you're probably okay. 6) When shifting gears to climb a slope, don't shift while going up the slope, or you'll probably stop short of the top. Too many times I failed to reach the top because I thought I'd better shift as I was going up. Just didn't work. 7) If going on a weekend, try to go on a Sunday in the early afternoon. We were told this was the best time to go during the weekend, since most people are going home and there's fewer people on the slopes. 8) The fence is your guide to getting back out of there. There's so much open space that it's easy to get lost, but if you can find the back fence, you should be able to work your way back to the entrance to the place. Give yourself a good 20-30 minutes to do this, if you're pretty far out there, as you may get stuck on some dunes on the way back home. read more

SO FUN. Came here to take my boyfriend and his siblings ATVing and it was a crazy fun and exhilarating experience. I can't wait to do it again! The staff was really friendly and informative. The lady working the front desk was so sweet and gave me a free pair of gloves when she overheard me saying that I didn't want to blister up my hands. They were just raggedy used gloves but it saved my fingers from blistering during ATVing. Thank you so much if you're reading this!! :) I recommend getting the 250EX Semi Automatic Bike even if you don't have a lot of ATVing experience or don't know how to drive a manual car. It's really easy to get a hang of and it drives super fast! Some of the other people in our group got the fully Automatic Bikes and it was too slow and couldn't catch up with those on the Semi Autos. The fully Automatic bikes also tend to get stuck more when trying to go up hills, so get the 250EX instead if you can! The 2 hours went by so quick, I wish we had the ATV's for 3 hours instead!! Great customer service, newer, clean and powerful AT V's! I rented a Honda 250 ex from BJ's this weekend to go quading on the Dunes at Oceano and was assisted by a very nice lady at the office. She explained the rental process and I was on my way to the dunes. When I arrived at the beach, their driver picked me up from the parking lot and drove me about 1 mile down the beach to where all the ATV's were staged. He gave me a quick safety lesson and I was on my way! My 2 hours went by so fast because quading here was SO MUCH FUN! Thanks to yelp, I was prepared and took the advice of previous yelpers. Here is what I found helpful: 1. Dress in layers if the weather if iffy. 2. Bring gloves (i used by batting gloves) 3. Bring sun glasses 4. Bring a bandanna or something as a liner for your helmet (because I'm positive the person before you was sweating in it) 5. If you are renting a manual shift quad, wear a boot of some sort because I wore tennis shoes and the top of my left foot was sore from shifting. Have fun and be safe! read more

They got the highest yelp reviews, so I went with BJ's. Overall, they were okay. We didn't have any issues with the equipment (unlike other yelp reviewers experiences at other ATV places). $$: We could have gotten a better deal with Angello's buy-one-get-one-free deal. For 2 hours with a 125cc and 250cc, we spent $115.There was an unexpected $5 beach fee if you decide not to ride their free shuttle. Nobody told us about that until we picked up the helmets at their store. I was a bit bummed they gave such short instructions and they didn't seem to be all that excited to explain the details of how to ride. They pretty much said: "Here's how you start the engine, okay now go!" For faithful yelp reviewers, here's what I would say for ATVing tips... 1. Wear the right gear: sunglasses, sunscreen, closed toed shoes, pants, and sports bras for the girls (dunes can be rather bumpy). 2. You need someone who can do heavy lifting if you get stuck on a dune. To avoid this, don't stop as you're trying to get up a dune. Just go full throttle. Go up dunes with a lot of traction marks. You'll know they are pretty stable. 3. Stop at the top of the dunes to make sure you can properly go down it. Riding the dunes was the best part of our trip. Not to be missed! read more

A girlfriend and I had no experience, however, and were feeling a little apprehensive about trying semi-automatics. The guy explaining the controls to us didn't do a great job. All I got from his demo is that you step down to shift down, and don't let go of the throttle. Oh...kay? Girlfriend and I looked and each other and decided to inquire about fully automatic ATVs instead, since we saw other yelp posts about them. We walked back to the "office" on the beach and asked about fully automatic RVs. They told us that those only have half the power of the semis (so get stuck in the sand dunes a lot) and recommended that we at least try the semis. We asked how to operate them. I kid you not, all they said was to shift down when dropping into dunes because you want to be in lower gears. And to shift up? They explained that as the engine gets louder, gears shift up. WRONG. SO WRONG. For the first 15 minutes or so, my friend and I trailed behind the others in first gear wondering how the other identical ATVs were going so much faster than us. It wasn't until our friends noticed that our engines were working too hard that they said we had to shift up to go faster. Guys, do a better job of explaining how to operate your ATVs. I mean seriously, you have one job!! Other than doing a terrible job explaining things, the people were nice and the service was great. Tips: 1) Just rent their goggles. Sunglasses look cooler but your sand-less eyeballs will thank you after. 2) Bring disinfectant to wipe down rented helmets. They also have helmets with gopro mounts installed! Nice touch. 3) Take their free shuttle from the parking lot down to the beach. It's not worth driving and paying the fee. 4) Always stop your ATV on a flat surface, or facing downhill. Facing uphill will likely get you stuck. 5) Make a reservation online if you have a big group. 6) Yelp check in for free gas! But you already knew that. ;) read more

4th of July reservation. No issues checking in until we got our bikes. We were left stranded for over an hour. Made over 5 calls to try and get someone to help us out. They kept telling us someone was on there way and still no show. They ended up confusing us with another call and had toataly forgeten about us. We didn't even get to enjoy half of the time we paid for. NEVER AGAIN WILL WE COME HERE. we are Central Coast natives so we come to Oceano all the time for ATV riding. This place will never get our Business or shall I say another Ripoff. No such thing as good customer service at this place. I really thought BJ's ATV rental was going to be my go to spot for renting ATV's while in Pismo Beach....I was wrong. The customer service has gone downhill over the last few years. I called to make a reservation for over 10 people and got nothing but attitude from them. Thanks to Yelp I was able to find BJ's ATV Rentals! Made a reservation for twelve 250 Honda's in the afternoon with a $100 deposit - quick and painless. Upon arrival, we were able to get settled from the long drive we had and we were taken care of even after our reservation time. We were able to walk away with helmets, goggles, and transportation to the dunes for $75 a person (don't forget to ask for the group discount). The drive to the beach was something else. We were not sure if we were going to take Chevy Suburban through the water, but depending on driver; you can be in for a bumpy ride or a painless one (which is what we fortunately had on the drive back to the transporter station). It was a great 2 hours spent on the beach and the semi-automatic 250 Honda's worked really well. The price was very fair and it was a great time. read more

I've never written a yelp review until my experience at this place. Stopped by last weekend, friendly service at the counter and ok service by the ATV instructors. Only rode for an hour and my ATV ran out multiple times. It ran out going up the dunes which was pretty scary and then just flat out ran out every minute as I was trying to get back to the drop off site. My boyfriend's ran out as well, but only once. I was pretty bummed and upset at how not fun the experience turned out to be, but what was more upsetting was having the instructor say we would receive a refund on my ATV and when we got to the front desk the woman said no. The instructor also rode my ATV and admitted it ran out on him as well, but it only didn't when he went full throttle, sorry I wasn't about going full throttle my entire ride as they are pretty fast and a bit scary, especially for your first time. The posted speed limit along the beach is 15 mph too so it's not like you'll be going full throttle there anyways. Beautiful beach and view, relaxing when my ATV didn't stop. read more

After getting suck in the sand and having to get a detailed car wash, we decided to go with BJ's instead of Arnie's so we can get a ride to the beach instead. You check in at the other location and pick up your helmets there. Then you get instructions to drive down to the beach area to park your car and walk down to the beach itself. The funny thing is, you need to walk "close enough to the water that you are almost touching it, then call me". So we did as she said and called and waited about 5 minutes before getting picked up. The guy who picked us up was very nice and prepared the rest of the group who has never rode before. We checked in and hopped on the bikes. Another quick instruction session and we were sent off. We all got the 250s which I think is decent enough. If you don't speed up a hill you will get stuck so make sure you have a heavy foot. We left at 4 and got back at 6 and got a ride back right away. The ladies at the other office were waiting for us to return our helmets, even though they close at 5. The wait to check in and get everything is much longer than Arnie's, but I would rather go with BJ's for the convenience of not having to drive on the beach. Wow! This was such a fun experience! First time ATV'ing, and BJ's ATV rentals made it seamless and memorable. I had planned this trip with another friend for months. I would definitely come back again! We rented the smaller ATVs, which make total sense for girls. It was roughly $50ish for 2 hours. I can't imagine dragging the bigger ATV out of the sand; We already had a difficult time dragging the smaller ATV. Tips: 1) Wear something with pockets so you can bring your phones (camera and to keep time) 2) Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from sand; oh and sunblock! 3) Wear clothes that cover the arms and legs if your skin is sensitive--i would highly recommend long pants; long sleeves are optional, IMO. 4) Have someone who is comfortable driving their car in the sand since you need to drive in the sand to the ATV'ing area--right adjacent to the beach! (It is actually a 2-step process: 1) Go to the physical store to check in: pay, sign waivers, and retrieve your helmets. 2) drive on the beach to the ATV'ing site--about 2-3 miles away) 5) I am not sure what the age restriction is, but this activity is fairly dangerous, so I don't recommend anyone younger than 14. Some of the sand dunes are super steep... 6) If you get stuck and can't get yourself out of the rut, try reversing--it works 3/5 times; When all hope is lost, ask someone nearby to help drag your ATV out! Your fellow ATV'ers are super friendly :) Cons: Why not 4 stars? 1) I didn't feel like we were well instructed--more like "fend for yourself." Unfortunately, I haven't had time to actually write a review when I went here like 3 months ago. I had a really good experience here, the only thing I didn't like is that some of their ATV's is kind off old so it kept on dying and now that I actually went and did my research on ATV's around the area they are kind off pricey. Like $20 more than other places. But other than that I had a really great time. They have awesome customer service by the time they picked us up at the waiting area and what not I had a really good time. No body was rude, and they start your time exactly when your on your ATV. oh and yeah not unless you really love doing this things 2 hours is enough because seriously your butt is going to start to hurt like hell after one hour especially if your not used to riding ATV's. read more

BJ is the place to go for ATV rentals this is my second time here! So it was father day's weekend and also a car show...my dumbass didnt know that we could make reservations and we didnt either, thinking we could just show up and get ATVs, which was what i did last time i came here I came here the first time cause my sorority used them for an event and recommended them and they offered me a small discount last time (very nice!) So i came back cause i had a good experiences and so when i got here to find out that they were all out of bikes, i was so heartbroken! and pretty much everywhere else was too! But the woman who works there took down my name and told me she'll call me if someone cancels or comes back early. Called other places and they were either DOUBLE the price or they were out too. after 20 minutes and feeling defeated, we headed out to a coffee joint when the woman called me back and asked how soon can i get back. How nice that she actually kept her words! Went back and she took care of us all! Be aware that you would have to drive out to the dunes and the parking (from the park) is $5. The rentals also has a $5 fee for gas too! Went out to the dunes and the guy gave us a mini lesson on the bikes and safety, all and all, very casual & friendly. During our trip to Pismo last week, my husband and I rented two Honda 250s. The staff at the office were very nice. Even though we showed up about 15 minute before closing. They were nothing but delighted to help us. We were even shown around to view the different ATV options. We came back the following morning, were fitted with helmets and opted out of the goggles. Then we drove from the office to the pickup area at the end of Pier street. We were shuttled out to the dunes. You can drive out to them, but I would only recommend it if you have a 4-wheel drive. We saw many a vehicle get stuck, especially when the tide came in. When we arrived to the staging area, we were shown to our ATVS and given instruction on how to operate them. The staff as very helpful. It had been a while since I drove one, so I was a bit rusty. After several stalls I finally got it. We were off. It was a great time. The dunes are so much fun, and the area is massive. Some recommendations: 1. Bring a bandana and maybe gloves. I wore mine on my head. But if it is windy, you can use it to keep the sand out of you nose and mouth. 2. Wear a back pack. This allows you to bring water and extra sunscreen. 3. Go in the morning. Our appointment was at 830. There is less traffic on the dunes in the morning. It is cooler and tends to be less windy. 4. 2 hours is PLENTY. Buy the end your hands will be tired and if you were a bit crazy like I was your booty will be sore. I can't wait to come back and do this again. read more

Efficient in the office. My hubby and 2 kids (under 15) rented-after taking a safety course on-line, which we were told was required and yes, they asked for certification numbers of kids at registration. Then they give you helmets and you can either be driven to the beach location or drive yourself (5$ park fee), which we chose. We were given a brief lesson from the very nice young men on the beach and off we went for 2hours in the dunes. So fun! Crowded in the dunes after noon, but so much room to roam for us first timers. 225$ for 2hrs for 2 adults and 2 kids-this was including gas surcharge ($5 per atv). Bj's staff were cool and we will be doing business with them again. read more
