I made reservations for my bf and I almost a month ahead for a two hour session on a Saturday at 1 pm. We came to their office a few minutes beforehand and there were a couple of groups ahead of us. When the lady at the counter was finally free to help us, she was very prompt with the paperwork and was able to walk us through the waivers and payments briefly. Her instructions to get to the beach lot were very helpful and I appreciated that she emphasized the importance on safety. She was made it clear to be sure we strapped our helmets properly and warned us to always check the other side of a mountain before actually jumping it because some of them are very steep and would lead to an ugly accident. She was also patient in making sure we had the correct size helmets. We brought our own goggles, which I recommend over sunglasses to make sure sand doesn't get in your eyes. The whole check in process took maybe about 15 mins or less and we were finally on our way to the actual beach which was just about a mile away. We grabbed street parking then walked to the beach to be picked up by one of their SUVs that would take us to their station to get the actual ATV. This is a free service, so I suggest riders to take advantage of it rather than paying $5 and driving your car on the sand a ways down on the beach. We finally got to their station and we both got the Honda 250, which are semi-auto. The instructions on how to operate them are super brief but if you have experience with driving stick or riding a motorcycle it will be easy to pick up. I was a little frantic about stalling or using the foot pedals to shift gears, but after awhile I got used to it. Your timed session begins once you hop on the rentals and the workers give you a time to bring it back by. From the lot to the actual open dunes area is maybe about another 5 min ride which you can only go up to 15 mph. Once you get to the open acres, it's really free for all from there! If you're in groups it's probably best to stick to a buddy system for safety reasons. The dunes are massive so you can really get the most of your two hours. It's also kind of easy to get lost so make sure someone is keeping track of time so you give yourselves enough time to make it back to drop off your rentals. We both had such a fun time especially since we were first timers. All the bumps, rockiness and damn near flying off the bikes will definitely take a toll on your body so expect to be sore esp your upper body the next day(s). Not sure how common this is either, but my right thumb hurts a lot from holding down the gas, I guess I shouldn't have been scared to use even higher gears. Also, the worker wasn't kidding about some of the dunes being super high, I had to bail out on a lot of em and thankfully I wasn't going super fast when approaching a hill or else I would've been flying off the bike and lost control. So be careful out there! But most importantly have fun The check out was super fast and easy. We brought back the rentals right on time and an SUV was quickly there to take us back to the lot. The drivers were super chill and nice also. You just have to make one more last stop to the office to drop back the helmets and any other gear you might've borrowed. I would definitely recommend this company for a super fun time ATVing on the sand dunes and would love to come back next time I'm in town. read more

i used Bj's once before when i was younger with my family, and it was time to go again with some buddies for a birthday. So by default, i recommended BJ's because it's what i knew. They reaffirmed why I chose them in the first place the original time. Not only were the prices great (considering what it costs to do other activities like this for 2 hrs), but the service was awesome. The briefer/"funny guy" was a really cool and uderstanding guy (especially when we had a problem with one of the quads at the opposite end of the beach!) We limped the quad back to the truck and he gave us another 45 min. for our troubles. The 400cc quads were more than enough power to get yourself into trouble if your not paying attention as one of my friends came close to doing twice. When they say be mindful of the dips that are hard to see, do not write that off. One of our group didn't see a dip when he was trying to catch up and (in slo-mo) slapped his upper body on the top and the handle bars of his quad. Sounds painful and it probably was but man, was it the funniest thing to see looking back at him like a rag doll. I can say i wasted about 2 min. of my rental time just sitting there cracking up. Sorry Z, couldn't resist!!! All in all If i were to go back to the Pismo dunes to ride quads again there is no question that i would use Bj's, great pricing, solid quads, great people! read more

We came across this place while flipping through some pages on a vacation guide in Pismo. The lady on the phone was very helpful. The service was outstanding and those guys who show you all that stuff are hilarious. It was our first time doing anything like this but the customer service and step by step instructions we got were really helpful. Once you drive to the location you can either drive on the hard sand with your vehicle which we didn't because my benz is low to the ground but they were nice enough to pick us up & drop us off. We rented the 250 and they were perfect for us. Those babies can go fast...wooohooo. The dunes area is HUGE so we were scared to go deep so we kept close to the ocean or close enough to where we knew we wouldn't get lost. I took my 11 year old son to Pismo the week before school started and we rented ATV's for 2 hours from BJ's. The staff was very nice. I chose BJ's because they are one of the few that allow kids under 16 to ride the ATV's if you either take the Oregon ATV test (listed on their site) or you have one of they chaperones go with you. I didn't know about the test so we chose the chaperone ($25 extra). The ATV's were great. Worked awesome. The chaperone was very low key and just kept an eye on us for my son's sake. We rented for 2 hours but wished we had done more (we rented a dune buggie which was a disaster from another place - see my profile for the review). The staff at the rental place and on the beach to get the ATV's at post 2 were pleasant and friendly. One word of caution is that your thumb may hurt. My son's sure did. I think mostly because his 125 was a bit slow so he kept the throttle pinned the whole time. Next time I am getting him a 250 which is what I rode. Lot's of fun. I called to make a reservation for over 10 people and got nothing but attitude from them. BJ's definitely deserved their 5 star rating. It is as good as it gets for renting quads for the dunes out there. Stopped in at the main office to pick up helmets and goggles, as well as paperwork for the quads. Drive down to the beach area where they have all the bikes and quads lined up for picking out. Guys were all super nice down there, got us right on the quads and off we went. Have rented with a couple different companies for this exact same service and this place is a home run! Quick story: Out on the dunes, we had three of us on quads, the 250EX and two of us on the Rhino, the buggy sort of thing that you drive like a car. (Got a chance to do that too while I was out there, pretty fun but no where near the same as the quads) Anyway, during the three hour rental time (which we got for the price of two hours since we went during the "off season") one of the quads broke down because my brother flipped on it! Yeah, crazy out there! So, we road back to the pit area and they had another quad ready in 30 seconds, hopped back on it and took off for another hour and a half no problems. All in all the easiest rental experience I have had out there of the four times I have done it. A couple of quick tips as well. When you go to rent the quads from them, be aware that they provide the goggles and the helmets, which are just dirt bike style helmets. If you have your own helmets for whatever reason like I did from my Harley, then just bring it. Another thing is that they do not provide gloves with your gear, they have them for sale but no rentals, so thats something to think about. The size of the quads, they have 400's that are full manual, and even though I am M1 licensed and have ridden for about two years, I just took the 250 semi-auto because its more fun to not worry about stalling all the time when your going balls to the walls out there. Got there and the person offered $75/2hrs, which was not concurrent with the website. While walking away to explore other prices, the guy stopped us to offer $70/2hrs. Meh. Fine, might as well go with their Honda 250EX. He looked at me and said that I could do the Grizzly 125. At the moment I didn't realize he said it cuz I was a chick, but other than the fact that I was with a whole bunch of dudes who were going to be going 125CCs more than me, I was planning to run things over. I definitely felt like he was trying to help us make this trip as painless as possible (though $70 does not grow on trees). After we get all the paperwork out of the way, he gives us some quick instructions, which I did not exactly hear, but assured myself I will figure out, and sends us on our way. Both of the people that helped us were very nice and was out on that cold beach just waiting for us. Really good first time experience. The staff really aim to make sure that you have a good time, especially when you're renting from them. Our whole group got the semi automatics at $70 for 2 hours. It was the scariest 2 hours of my life, but still enjoyable. I can't emphasize enough on how superb their service is, and how much fun they want you to have. We broke the flags off the ATVs and they were super nice about it, they just wanted to hear our epic stories about how it happened. But I just broke mine by kicking it while trying to get off after getting stuck in the sand a bajillion times. If I ever do want to try ATVing again, I will def hit up BJ's! read more

Great customer service. 3 hours of pure bliss. This was a great place to celebrate for Randy's dirty 30. When I go back to SLO, I will definitely hit up this rental center. We seriously mobbed deep like DMX's Ruff Ryders music video. They had more than enough ATVs to accomodate a group of like 20! Just a note... if you can avoid getting the automatic ATVs, do it. They take quick care and the instructors are good. The price is decent for 2hours and make sure to check in to get an off. Before you start on your ATV's, make sure to look where your ATV rental is located on the beach exactly. I went here in June for my friends bachelorette party. We rented a beach house and one of the activities was to go ATVing. We researched a few places at Pismo and this was the best deal that everyone could afford. We paid about $40 each for the 2 hours. (It is more for guys and for those who weigh more than 135#) There is no deposit needed. Like most activities there is a waiver we all had to sign. We drove to the beach and yes there is a $5 fee for driving to the area but whatever we were all excited to ATV. Once you arrive at BJs booth, you get a helmet and 5 minute lesson on how to use the bike. ATV was exciting. I can't comment on how the price compares to other places but I was very satisfied with the service here. $70 for two hours per person to rent Honda Ex-250s. I had never gone ATV riding before but it's easily the most fun I've had in a while and as far as BJ's is concerned, they make getting on the dunes really straight forward and all the people who work there are easy to talk to and get you going quick. I think we were riding in less than a half hour from when we walked into the door just off Grand Ave. For those wondering if ATV riding is fun: it's like go-karting only with no rules. Everything feels faster, the dunes are beautiful, and the area is easily big enough to feel like you're exploring as you go crest over crest. I'd go back in a heartbeat. read more

I visited a very good friend of mine in Santa Barbara, and he surprised us by taking us ATV riding. The folks over at BJ's ATV rental know their stuff. Not only are they knowledgeable and helpful, they're super friendly and cool! Everybody(from the lady who checked us in and gave us our helmets to the guy who gave us a ride out to the beach even to the rental guy who gave us our ATV crash course training) was just super awesome and nice. Unlike some other lame ATV places where there's a set course and they don't let you go all out, this place has no limits. Once you head into the dunes, it's free for all. My buddies and I did jumps, flew off dropoffs, and raced on sand dune straightaways. Most stress-relieving and exciting/fun time I've had in quite some time. I HIGHlY recommend these guys to anybody who wants an adrenaline rush. p.s. It can get pretty dangerous out there, and people have died before, so be careful! What a fun time! All the staff that we dealt with were extremely helpful and answered all my never ending questions with ease! 82 dollars for a 2 hour session but it's 5 dollars off if you check in on yelp. This includes the atv rental and helmet, goggles can be rented by leaving a 10 dollar deposit. My friends and I were worried about not having gloves and the lady (Kelly?) gave us two pairs for free, how kind! Although this rental place is kinda a distance aways from the sand dunes you park right before you pay the kiosk entering the beach and they send someone to pick your party up and drop you off where the atvs are. The employee who picked us up gave us lots of tips and random but useful things to know and the employees who showed us beginners how to ride made it very simple and easy to follow along. Tips for clothing: I wore shorts this time but next time I'll probably wear long pants just as the bumpy sand dunes can cause chafing on your thighs, bring sunglasses and a bandana just in case! Rude rude customer service! It was my girl friend's b'day and we planned to check this place out as BJ's atv had 4 star ratings. All was good until the point of returning the atv. While checking for damage to the atv, this guy was so arrogant and condescending that he literally told us not to waste his time and shut up. This experience made her cry on her bday. I would suggest folks to stay away from this guy if possible. I understand that its tiring after a crazy weekend inflow of tourists but try to mitigate the situation rather than being arrogant and rude. read more

We love BJs! Earlier in the year, we rented from them for a friend's birthday and found the experience to be quite pleasant. So, for another birthday recently, we decided to go with them again. This, however, was after trying to rent a large amount of vehicles (13 ATVs) from Sun Buggy - who wanted me to pay in full. No way! So we decided to go back to BJs. They only required $100 deposit at the time of booking, and said that everyone could pay for their own rentals when we checked in on the day of - uhh, can I say, YAAASS! Since I did not rent an ATV this time, we used my deposit for my boyfriend's rental and they were even able to credit me back $25 (total rental was $75 for the 250ex). I wish BJs also rented dune buggies. They do have 4 wheelers but they look more like souped up golf carts. Not really made for speed and going crazy on the dunes. Overall another great experience with BJs. I would totally rent from them again. PLEASE OFFER DUNE BUGGIES SOON!!!! read more

Whatever you do, do not choose this ATV rental! The staff is completely disorganized and there is no communication between the office and people on the beach. They schedule as many people as they possibly can in order to bring in money, but make you wait an insane amount of time on the beach. We rented the ATV's at 1:30pm and ended up getting our helmets and ATV's at 4:00 PM!!! As if that isn't enough, the instructions on how to operate the bike were not explained thoroughly and the staff were extremely rude. We were yelled at for asking how long the wait one was, sent all over the place just to get a helmet, and worst of all degraded and insulted based on our physical stature. This is one of the worst experiences I've had at any service establishment period, and I would ask that anyone who finds these offenses to be disgraceful for an establishment to find a different ATV rental place. (The only positive interaction that we had was with the shuttle driver Richie, who took us to and from the rental site. That man knows what customer service means and deserves a shoutout) read more

May family and I read the other reviews for this place and decided we needed to rent from BJs. They did not disappoint one bit. From the minute we got to their office, we were greeted by an extremely friendly and helpful employee who thoroughly explained everything to us and ensured we were all informed. We parked near the pick up location on Pier St near the beach and then got a shuttle to the trailer where the ATVs were. Two very helpful employees took care of getting us our helmets and quads and we were off. Unfortunately my quad stalled and wouldn't start a short while after we got started but my husband was able to get it started and took it back and swapped it out for another. They gave us another 30 mins to ride as a result, which was really nice. I would highly recommend BJs to anyone looking to experience the dunes in Oceano. We had a blast and it has been the best part of our trip so far! read more
