Disappointed that BJ's confirmed 3 Honda 400ex's for our group but only had 1 for us. They made us wait for 45 minutes while they tried to round up 2 ATVs, but ultimately couldn't deliver them. Then, they wouldn't give us a refund on the cost difference between the Honda 250ex's and the Honda 400ex's! Seriously? Instead they tried to give us a voucher that we needed to use in a short period of time -- which means spending more money at BJs! This gets better. We had reserved the ATVs online (DON'T RESERVE ONLINE because that doesn't guarantee that you'll get what you ordered -- see above -- and if you need to make a change, they won't give you a refund, just a credit that you have to use in 30 days). We live far from Pismo so going back in 30 days doesn't work for us. I asked if we could get more time on the rentals in lieu of the 3 ATVs that we didn't need, and they offered an hour. At first we were okay with that, but then they wasted 45 minutes of that hour trying to locate the Honda 400ex's! So we got 15 minutes extra for $300 of rentals that we didn't need. We didn't get a refund for the Honda 400ex's they couldn't provide, we didn't get the extra hour for changing our reservation, and we didn't get a voucher that was equal to the multiple mishaps that took place (shorted us over $100). Go anywhere else. We hear Steve's ATVs has more ATVs, bigger transport buses (so you get to the dunes faster, BJs has a 5-seater so you have to wait 45-60 min to get to the dunes), better policies, and better prices. So disappointed because we've been going to BJ's for 15 years. They don't appreciate good customers. Since last year, they changed their customer service policies, require online reservations only (so they take your money and rope you into returning in 30 days), reduced the number of ATVs they have, and now only have one very old SUV to transport all customers to the dunes. read more

We love BJs! Earlier in the year, we rented from them for a friend's birthday and found the experience to be quite pleasant. So, for another birthday recently, we decided to go with them again. This, however, was after trying to rent a large amount of vehicles (13 ATVs) from Sun Buggy - who wanted me to pay in full. No way! So we decided to go back to BJs. They only required $100 deposit at the time of booking, and said that everyone could pay for their own rentals when we checked in on the day of - uhh, can I say, YAAASS! Since I did not rent an ATV this time, we used my deposit for my boyfriend's rental and they were even able to credit me back $25 (total rental was $75 for the 250ex). I wish BJs also rented dune buggies. They do have 4 wheelers but they look more like souped up golf carts. Not really made for speed and going crazy on the dunes. Overall another great experience with BJs. I would totally rent from them again. PLEASE OFFER DUNE BUGGIES SOON!!!! read more

I love ATVing at the Oceano Dunes!!! wooooohooooo Anyways... BJ's is cheaper than Steve's. That's a plus lol Remeber you need closed toed shoes also... i forgot to pack any! But luckily there was a thrift store down the street where I was able to buy a used pair of sneakers for $1! When i was done ATVing i kindly donated them back haha Anyways... BJ's is awesome, the lady at the front is a sweet old(er) lady... she's really nice... I rented the 250, my gf rode the 125 since it was her first time... we had a blast... The instructors or whatever u call the guys who gave us a quick into about the ATV and the dunes were funny dudes... 2 hours for the both of us for only $125.... Luckily for us the weather was an amazing 78 the whole afternoon! read more

This was our second time booking with BJ's ATV and the only disappointment was learning that the dunes will be closing to vehicle access. The price was fair compared to other local rentals, booking online was a breeze, and we really appreciate the folks honoring the two hour reservation timeframe once we got our ATV (time doesn't start when you get checked in at the office, which is what we thought our first go and caused some confusion. Your time starts when you get your ATV :) The shuttle driver and instructors give lots of tips and will provide a tutorial how to operate the ATV. It's a great experience!! read more

Came down to Arroyo Grande to visit friends from Santa Cruz. On a whim, decided to surprise the family with 2 hours of fun riding the Dunes. Came across BJs and Jim at the register was helpful getting us all the vehicles we needed for our party of 8. The vehicles came in great shape and the service was prompt and friendly. I have been coming to the central coast for 20 years but never made it to the Dunes. Highly recommend the experience and getting your rental from BJs. Thanks guys!! If you need a quad rental at a competitive price then this is your place! I suggest listening closely to the tutorial when it's given prior to your ride--it will definitely help you!! The lady at the counter answered all our questions without hesitation. The price included helmet and goggles, nice! The other places charged extra. They also have free shuttle service. Once we got out there the man gave us thorough instructions. He also tried to be funny which I thought was a nice touch. The only drawback was that my ATV was having trouble but my husband's worked perfectly. I know how to drive a stick shift so the semi-automatic should have been seamless for me. But my husband confirmed that it lacked power and first gear seemed to be slipping. Green light on (neutral) and still wouldn't go, it needed a running start. It was fine if you kept going but once you stopped it was hard to put in first gear again. The other ATV places were kinda blah - didn't seem interested in our business. At BJ's they were helpful and courteous and have been there the longest! We got a nice history lesson on the free shuttle. We'll be back! read more

Very good service. They were very friendly and helpful. The rental office is at the address listed on yelp, but you will get the ATVs at a different location on the beach by the sand dunes. No fear, this place offers a free shuttle from the parking lot area to their location on the beach. Or you can just drive your own car on the beach to the ATV area. The parking lot by the beach is very small, so finding parking will probably be hard. Had a lot of fun riding around! 2 hours might seem like a long time, especially if you've never gone, but it goes by quickly. read more

It was first time riding ATVs for us (2 adults and a 10 year old). We had a good experience at the end , but we didn't expect such a long wait time . (We made reservation a couple week in advance). Reservations were for 11 am, we got there at 10:30 like they asked . There was a line of people , all of them had reservations. Nobody knew how long the wait would be. We got checked in around 12 (no one really apologized). After this , things got a bit better . We drove to the beach and since we paid $5 to drive on the beach, we were able to get to the ATV place by our car - instead of waiting for a shuttle which they said would take 15-20 more minutes . After this, we were given helmets and ATVs . The instructions were short , good thing is that my son got it right away , and it took us a few tries till we got it . However the guys who work there were very helpful and patient . I'm very happy that none of our vehicles broke down during the 2 hours we rented (as I've read in reviews for other companies) . So overall the riding experience was good and I would do it again some time . My son has been dreaming of this for a while , so he had a blast . They need to definitely improve on the efficiency at the front office . As for training people to ride , would be very helpful to have some instructional videos for the models of ATVs they have , so we could watch it at home (or in line). Different ATVs have different controls , and by the time we got there I was stressed out , so would have helped to have the instructions instead of 3 minutes that the guy spent us showing how to drive it . read more

The people here are the best. I made reservations for 8 people, then 2 flaked out on the day of and I was so worried that I would still have to pay the deposit for those 2 ATVs. On top of that, I left my freakin' wallet at home with my ID and everything else so my very sweet boy had to drive back and get it after already driving for over half an hour. It did not look like my party and I were going to make the 11am reservation so I called BJ's and asked them for 2 favors; one, to cancel 2 vehicle reservations, and two, to scoot my reservation an hour later. I waited for the answer...and the very nice guy I talked to on the phone granted me the 2 favors! Boy, was i relieved. It was my first time ATVing and BJ's made it a very enjoyable experience. Just flew home to visit from school on the East Coast and had an amazing time, even tho I flew off my ATV and wrecked my entire thigh!!! I had an unforgettable experience with my friends & even made a few getting rescued by nice guys (HEY!!! HAHA) out on the dunes because my best friend & I kept getting stuck in the beginning! They don't have chill or FUN ish like this on the East Coast - period. This is a MUST for a true CALI experience. The transport drivers and rental staff were amazing, friendly, & FUNNY! The "environmentalist" had an amazing time - I'm not trying to shut you down haha and thanks to the zombie helmet dude (HEY to you too) for your patience - I would have even more screwed m messed up on the dunes if you hadn't shown me how to reverse!!! And lastly thanks and S/O to ERIC CHAVEZ whoever you are for returning my friend's phone after I dropped it flying off my atv!!! You and your fam are great human beings!!! If I had your contact we would have sent you a reward and cookies!!! Overall Oceano & Pismo Beach have super chill vibes. We drive to the beach, where someone was there to pick us up and take us to the ATVs. I've rode a quad before at the desert but riding on the sand dunes is an experience you must try! Horrible customer service. A lot of attitude from front desk and the dudes who set you up with the gear. They didn't instruct us to park on the side of the beach and we will be shuttled into the beach. So we drive our cars and got stuck many times. The atv were old and falling a part. When we were told to chose an atv they just taught us how to turn on engine. They did not instruct on how to shift gears. So most of us were driving on first gear until we helped each other out on the dunes. Also a lot of the atv exhaust pipes were exposed and burnt our calves. Horrible... never again with this group of rentals. They also say to call them if there's something wrong with the atv. Well there's no service out there.. I'm really upset that they didn't tell us abou the shuttle. We had a group of 15 so three cars on the sands were bad news. Bad instructions... read more

Rented 3 ATV's for the first time. The staff is knowledgeable and recommended that we ride at 10:00am which was great advice. We asked if they had helmets that already had go pro mounts on them and gladly let us use them. The safety info given was clear,they will give you a ride to and from the beach if you don't want to drive your car down to the beach. read more

Bummer! I came back thinking I was going to receive the same experience as the last time. Had a big family for my nephews birthday we made reservation's we originally wanted 4hrs but not guaranteed b|c the lady advised they had a party of 150 people coming in and they needed there ATV's back, the way the rep said this at the office, like we did not matter! Strike one, when we arrived to go get our ATV's the man at the beach advised that he will show the adults first and then the kids, he checked our paperwork and sent the adults off but two behind to supervise the children, somehow we ended up with a different guy and REFUSED to help my kids until he seen the paperwork when I simple advised that we had showed our paperwork to the other gentlemen just to ask him! He ignored us and went onto the next family!!! RUDE!!!!!! Strike 3, one of the bikes completely died out and wouldnt turn off. When I called for help on the main-line I advised that I was stuck on the beach, the lady over the phone asked where I was and I told her how can I tell you so I can help you help me reach me she just LAUGHED!! Absolutely the WORST already frustrated that the atv wouldn't start and shes just laughing F* RUDE!! One of the helpers riding around had to drag the atv with a rope behind him to take it back to the place bc he couldn't start it either!! The next year round I will be looking @ a different location unfortunately. read more

My family of 5 rented 3 ATVS and 1 UTV. We had the best time! Equipment was older but operated great. It was a busy day for BJ's, but staff did a good job managing the crowd and getting everyone out on the dunes as quick as possible. We were there earlier in the day, mid-week and I expect the weekends are more hectic. (Get there early) We paid $5 to drive out on the beach and did our rental their instead of at their street location. I think this was a lot faster and we did not have to use the shuttle. We did a 3 hour rental, which was about right for my family. I think most families would be happy with a 2 hour rental, but we are kind of adventurous. ATVs got stuck in the sand a half dozen times and I had to lift the rear end up and reposition it. It is heavy and I don't think anyone else in my family could have done this more than once. Keep this in mind if you head deeper into the dunes where there is little support. Closer to the dunes entrance BJ's had employees on patrol to help people out. read more

I surprised my husband for his birthday with an afternoon of ATVing in Pismo. He had been wanting to go while we were on our honeymoon in Costa Rica but never got the chance so I knew this was the perfect gift. I did my research and decided to make a reservation with BJ's. Put my $100 deposit over the phone and was a pretty easy process. The girl over the phone informed me to come 30 minutes before our start time to check in. I had made the reservation for 1pm and arrived at 12:30pm as instructed. When we got to the office, there was a line out the door and quite a few large parties. It took about 45 minutes to reach the front and check in. Not sure if this is the norm but once we got to the front the girl apologized and thanked us for our patience and let us know that today was very busy. She was very nice and we understood the situation as there were only 2 people checking everyone in. We were informed of where to go and park and we headed off. The location of the shuttle to take you to the ATV's was easy to get to and only less than 1 mile away. Found street parking and hopped in the shuttle which took us to the beach. The shuttle guy was also very nice so customer service was there. We then were told to wait in a line to get our helmets and there were a few groups ahead of us in that line as well. There was only 1 girl giving and receiving helmets and that took about 15 mins. I was a bit worried as our reservation was at 1pm and it was now about 1:55pm. She told us to be back at 3:50pm which would be our 2 hours we paid for. The ATV's were great! So much fun! My husband loved it and we will be back to do it again. When we got back to return the ATV and our helmets we had to wait in the same line which took about 25 mins. It was the same girl and the same line you get in to get the helmets. We're pretty chill people but were on a bit of a time crunch that day as I had other things planned so the overall experience took a long time. Now I wasn't expecting to be there for 2 hours only and just bounce but the whole process takes way too long. Either they were understaffed or this is just how it always is but to have to wait 1 hour and half to check in, get and receive gear is too much. As mentioned before, we will be back just not sure if it'll be with BJ's. read more

I booked using the easy online process, although when I called the woman over the phone stated that we could just walk in without a reservation. When we arrived they were ready for us and it only took a few minutes to square away the paperwork. They no longer offer goggle rentals but they do sell used goggles at $5 a pop ($13 for new ones), along with other gear if needed. Helmets were provided. We weren't sure if the kids (ages 6 and 8) would fare well on their own ATVs so we ended up getting a 4 seater UTV to begin with. The UTV operated fine (although one of the nets was not secure or functioning) on the sandy dunes and it was great fun until both of our kids got hurt (not the fault of the rental company - Dad got a little enthusiastic on the ride and hit a bump that gave the kiddos some whiplash pains). We ended up aborting the ride earlier than the two hour booking as a result, but the kids still gave the experience a thumbs up. There was pretty much zero training or instruction given, so you may want to do some research on riding before you hit the terrain to ensure you don't do any no-no's. We saw plenty of park vehicles making sure people didn't go crazy but dune rules can be tricky. read more

I'm a single Dad and I took my three kids up to Pismo Beach for a few days just after school got out -- and one of the things we wanted to do was ride ATVs. After searching online and finding 3 or so of the larger outfits I went to Yelp to give me additional insight/opinions. I'm glad I did.... We took the online class the night before from our hotel room and printed out our certificates at the biz center... Saves you time and consternation -- do it. I called BJ's the next a.m. once the kids were awake and spoke w/ Kelly - really nice on the phone -- I think they were inundated w/ folks right in their office at the time -- but she answered all my questions and I asked what time we should show up to rent ATVs for my twin girls (10) and son (13). She recommended 12:30 and that worked fine for me because I wanted to feed the tikes ahead of our 2 hour rental. We showed up on time at their office on Grand Street - very easy process Kelly and another nice lady fitted us w/ goggles and helmets. I put down my CC and they asked if I wanted to drive out to the beach or get a ride from their van. We decided to drive our sedan since it would seem to save time (and I've never driven on a beach). It worked out great -- directions & map given by BJ's (really a 5 min ride) were perfect. The team at the beach was great. The twins were big enough to warrant 125's and my son and I had signed up for 250's. I would HIGHLY recommended getting your children the 125's vs. the 90's provided they are comfortable and excited to ride the dunes. Big difference in power and naturally the firm won't let your young ones go out on a bike that is too large for them to control. The 125's can really move and maneuver in the sand much better than the 90's. Anyway -- we had a GREAT experience - one of the best adventures for both my daughters and son -- they truly enjoyed it. BJ's treated us great the customer service and the vehicles were top notch... The only thing I wish we did differently was ride out further South to the "Sand Highway" instead of going in at the first opening to the dunes. The young man may have mentioned that part to us ahead of time but it wasn't stressed. We went into the main dunes and Dad spent the first 30 minutes digging the tikes out of being stuck. If you are taking inexperienced or young riders out with your group -- ride all the way down to the sand highway and then head inland. I read several reviews on YELP re: BJ's, Arnies and a couple others and on each and every one there were glowing reviews and bad reviews. My advice is take out the low and the high scores and go w/ the majority and recent reviews. I know this diatribe is a mix of the entire experience of taking your kids ATVing in Pismo and the particular company, but hopefully you find it useful. Best, K read more
