We went here both times we came down to go riding on the beach. Our 1st experience went so well that when we came back again years later there was no question as to where we were going. Everything went smoothly, the bikes were great, & they even had an automatic for someone in my group who wasn't comfortable with a clutch. The service was good & so were the helmets & goggles. I wish there was a BJ'S near where I lived so I could go riding around where I live, but there is nothing like that near me. I will deffinately go back the next time I go to California! read more

These guys are awesome! I cant wait to go back and rent from them again. We made reservations and I recommend you do too specially if you plan on renting on the weekends. They do get busy and you dont want to be the person waiting for an atv. The girls at the main office were so nice. They had great customer service and waived the gas surcharge since we checked in on Yelp. Very knowledgeable staff! We drove out to the beach where the atvs were waitin for us. We got good instructions from a young chubby kid who was also very knowledgeable and told us the dos and donts of ridin on the dunes. We rented 4 quads and had some trouble with 1 being under powered and sluggish but they gladly exchanged it for a brand new one. Overall we had a great experience wiith them and their atvs are well maintained and if you follow the rules you're gonna be fine. Even the locals were super nice and helped us when we got stuck in the dunes. Im definitely renting from BJs again when i go back. read more

Took a mini trip with a couple friends to Pismo strictly for ATVing. I've driven one before during a cruise excursion but that was just through the streets. I've never experienced anything like the dunes here. We checked in without any problems and parked near the beach and then took the shuttle to BJ's ATV's on the beach. After a really quick tutorial they sent us off to the dunes. 2 hours later we come back and return the ATV's and take the shuttle back. Great customer service from each employee at BJ's. The ATV's were great and were able to handle most of the hills without any problems. I already want to go back and I see no reason for me not to use BJ's again the next time I'm out there! read more

It was a fun experience. Checking in took a while, but the woman checking us in let me use the Yelp discount even after she already charged my credit card. Nice! Driving to the beach wasn't convenient and we didn't feel safe parking on the street-- but that's out of their control. The instructions were very brief when we got our ATVs, that's one thing they can work on. One of us got hurt and they didn't have any bandages or first aid kits on the beach, so be careful out there. Overall, we would probably go with another rental company that's near the beach itself if we go again. I would probably wear sweat pants too since the burning heat off the bike was uncomfortable after an hour. read more

My family was in Pismo for vacation and my bro and I decided to try ATVing cause we heard it was a blast, although we've ever done anything remotely similar. We compared pricing, and BJs was the cheapest, although to be fair there wasn't a whole lot of difference. The lady at the desk was no nonsense and I can see how you might be put off if you talked to her on the phone. But she answered all our questions and was funny after she warmed up to us. Apparently there is some new regulation that if you're under 18 you either have to have a certificate to ride an ATV or be with someone 25 or older who does. So one of their guides has to go with you if there is someone riding who is under 18. At first my bro and I thought that was a deal breaker...a guide? On an ATV? But the lady explained what they do, and we thought it might be nice to start a little slower on our first time out. Slower my arse! The guide showed us how to do things I never ever would've tried, number one, or thought that I could do, number two. Back to that in a sec. Oh, and PS: if you'll need (or want) a guide, they only have two rides a day, so book it the day before. We saw a couple people get turned away because there wasn't enough room. They provided clean helmets and told us to meet them out at the dunes. There were people who didn't have a ride onto the beach and BJs gave them a ride, which was nice. We got out there and they gave us a safety pep talk (yes, very funny...especially if you like pirates). They got us on the bikes, and they gave us both the 250 semi-automatic ones. It was fine for me, but my bro is much bigger and he said he might want the 400 next time. I was scared cause I've never driven anything like an ATV, but our guide (Robert) made sure we understood where everything was and gave us a little time to practice the basics before leading us down the beach. There were some yahoos that were driving crazy and they left after we did, but they were sitting at the beach looking mad when we got back from our ride. It made me feel a little better that it seemed like BJs was willing to sacrifice customer happiness for overall safety. We got into groups, about five with each guide, and followed the guide's tracks the whole time. Again, sounds lame, but when his tracks are horizontal on an almost vertical bowl, I was fine with being behind him. Robert took us out and showed us how to deal with common problems while riding an ATV--great peace of mind. He led us over uber-steep hills, through half-pipes, super fast across the flats, and explained different maneuvers before we did them. I freaked out a couple of times trying to do some of the harder lines and he took the time to come back and coach me, giving me tips on riding better or how to finagle out of wherever I had gotten myself. At one point he even rode down a ginormously steep hill backwards to prove I could do it forwards. :) And he ended up giving us about 2 and a half hours on the ATV. Overall, I had so much fun and I would recommend BJs and its guides to anyone. The dunes are huge and I would've gotten lost, or not found some of the cool places we did. And I wouldn't have tried most of the things Robert led us through. So much fun! I wish I would've taken a camera to prove to the rest of my family how cool we looked. :) You definitely will be sore afterwards! read more

Decided on a last minute long weekend trip with my 16 year old son . I have never been on an ATV but the staff is super friendly and so informative so I was totally comfortable getting on. Can't remember the guy who transported us from the rental place to the beach but he was super cool and gave us a lot of good tips. We both had such a good time. I told my son we're going to have to plan a family trip and rent them for the day, Being that you can camp nearby I think it would be awesome. We had never done the ATV experience before, but had two 18-year-old males visiting from another country and thought this might be an activity they'd enjoy. We walked down the ATV beach first, to check out the action. Once there, we saw the mobile trailer for BJ's and went to ask him questions about the experience. He was super friendly and not condescending at all. He encouraged us to give it a try and even gave us the tip about needing long pants (the engine between your legs gets HOT). If it had been a person who was not as friendly or inviting, we might have missed out on this experience. Our guests had the time of their lives. First time ATVing at the dunes, and glad I Yelped BJ's before I went. Exactly what others been stating. Very easy going and funny staff. In and out of the front office for the 6 of us in less than 10 mins. Helps to make reservation the day before so you dont have to do paperwork the day of except provide a credit card for incidents. Pay 5 bucks to park on the beach which is better than waiting to be shuttled and have to wait before and after you are done ATVing. $70 2Hours was more than enough time for us. 2 of the 6 guys that went got back 30 mins late and was not charged a fee, pretty relax staff. The only thing that took away the 5 star rating is 2 of the 6 vehicles had slight issues. Semi-automatic shift constantly stuck in gear, but still enough juice to make you write your will before you leave. Would definately go back and bring others!!! read more

I actually read all (that is, every one of them) of the reviews last year. Thought about it. Then this year we bit the bullet and did it. wooooo...hahhh! Took my 17 yr old daughter and we had a blast. People were good, machines had no hiccups, and the weather cooperated. tips: 1) eat before you rent, no time to eat or drink after that, and you'll need the energy 2) bring gloves to dampen the vibration of the handlebars 3) when going fast, squat up above the seat - like riding a trotting horse - otherwise you'll get beat up by the ruts, at least that worked for me 4) listen attentively when the staff tells you not to go over a dune at speed, before you can see what's on the other side. Some dunes taper down, but some drop off. My daughter did get thrown, and banged her wrist, but two other riders stopped over to check and make sure she was all right. But don't worry, a little caution goes a long way, and we had a great time. read more

This USED to be my go to rental place. We were there 8-10-19 with a party of 5. The shuttle guys are nice and friendly. Their quads are in awful shape! Such a disappointment! They are SO HARD to shift and mine would not idle and died every time!! There was rust all over the vehicles and one of them was leaking oil!! I came here with a big group of friends and family for a birthday celebration and was pleasantly surprised with the service for my first time ATVing. The ladies at the shop were patient with our large group and got us taken care of quickly, the shuttle driver was super chill, and even the fellas at the rental pickup on the beach were all very friendly and informative... only thing I will say, is that the guy who gave us the "safety/how to operate" run through before taking off definitely did not speak loud enough during the demo (and even continued to talk while others drove around us on the very loud ATVs!) Not a huge deal considering we were on the beach and surrounded by ATVs, so noise was to be expected... but my point is, if it's your first time out there and you have questions you better make sure you ask 'em because once you're out in the dunes you're on your own! Haha. To be fair though, he did assist us individually while getting on to the ATVs... Overall, it was a super fun experience and I will be back for sure. I was a little skeptical about the 2 hour rental time, but found it to be more than enough time to enjoy the dunes and the great view along the beach. Thanks for the good times! read more

As a first time rider I went with the fully automatic bike (150 ATV) I was assured at the rental office that even though the fully automatic had less power it would easily go up the dunes. This was not a good choice, we spent more time pulling the bike out of the sand then actually riding it. Definitely go with the semi automatic 250. Overall it was a fun experience and I would recommend to friends. read more

The line was super long even though I had a reservation. That is not why I am giving two stars though, the reason I am giving two stars is because the lady who was helping people was extremely rude about me asking a question because it was unclear whether it mattered if we had a reservation or not. The lady who actually ended up helping us was great though. That was just the first part, then we had to drive our selves all the down to the beach where it is free-for-all parking so it basically took about 45 minutes just to find parking there. Then we had to have a truck take us to the actual ATVs where my party and I were lined up where they told us to and they came and picked up people who had just got there instead of us who had been waiting 30 minutes already and told them that but they didn't care. Then when we got there they ran out of goggles, like seriously, we are riding through sand you should have enough goggles for every ATV you have. Once they got us our head gear and NO GOGGLES, they checked us in and gave us less than 2 hours which is what we paid for. The people there also did not care that they didn't have goggles for us they just shrugged there shoulders and called for the next people. I only gave them two stars because there ATVs were pretty cool and powerful but you can find cheaper prices right next to the beach. read more

This place is great! We rented three 250cc quads for two teenagers and an adult, and got a guide for our two hour session. The workers asked all the right questions and were friendly and professional. Our guide took us to some great spots away from the few others that were out during a monday morning. As we built up our skills, he took us to progressively more challenging spots. The quads are great if everyone can ride on their own - they easily soaked up the bumps, and had more than enough power to make riding fun. At the end of the session we tallied up the results: two hours of fun with no crashes yet still more than enough adrenalin consumption to satisfy everyone in the group (did I mention two of us were teenagers?). read more

Honestly I'd say to go somewhere else when renting a ATV. It was fun riding for a good 30 minutes until our ATV kept dying on us. We had a group of 12 and 3/12 ATV died on us and we had to get help from the rental place or other people to come save us. Took them forever to find us because the flag locations weren't clear to spot easily. Other than that, staff was nice but I would tell everyone to take their money elsewhere if they don't want to risk getting stranded on the field. lol! read more

This is by far the worst ATV rental place i've gone to. The people there are rude especially this one blonde lady who kept yelling at me and my family while we were just waiting in line. she was saying to move back in line due to the people who made reservations. Normally that makes sense, but there was no where which indicated this. Me and my family were waiting for 50 mins and when we finally came to the front she tells us to move back and made other people come in front of us. By far one of the rudest people i have ever met. Riding the Dunes was awesome, however, our ATV handlebars broke in half, after going over little bunny hills, and we were surprised BJ's charged us $45 for wear and tear on an older ATV. It took time to bring the atv back and exchange it out, and they did not compensate our time! Just charged us $45 for the broken handle bars. Will not rent from BJ's again and would strongly recommend going elsewhere to rent! read more
