We stopped by this BBQ spot in Nags Head while celebrating a birthday during our vacation. The service was definitely a highlight--everyone we interacted with was friendly, attentive, and we were taken care of quickly. The food, however, didn't quite meet our expectations. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich, which was a bit underseasoned for my taste, and the baked beans were softer than I prefer. I also tried the key lime pie, which unfortunately wasn't my favorite. My boyfriend had the brisket, and while it was tender, it didn't have the smoky flavor we were hoping for. Overall, while we appreciated the welcoming service, the food didn't stand out compared to other BBQ we've had. Sooey's BBQ is an OBX chain known for their ribs and bbq. This location is in Nags Head, NC close to Jockey's Ridge State Park. There's a lot with a few free parking spots in front of the restaurant. There's also limited seating indoors and larger tables outside. The ambiance is really casual and rustic. We ordered takeout and the food took a while to come out. However, the waitress was really nice and apologetic about it. She gave us some complimentary hush puppies. The food itself was okay, we ordered a chicken bbq & ribs with a side of bread, which was $25. It came with 2 sides and we got mac n cheese and fries. The ribs fell off the bone but could've been more flavorful, the chicken was a bit dry but seasoned well, and the mac n cheese and fries were tasty. I was very disappointed. I love good barbecue. We traveled from Ohio for a brief getaway. We looked up Sooey's rib shack to try it out. I ordered the brisket sandwich with some collards. The brisket was " clearance rack steak" tough. It was very undercooked. I sent it back and ordered pork spare ribs which were very overcooked and mushy!!! My wife and my dinners were $60 and I have had better barbecue at McDonald's. Long live the McRib sandwich. I am a back yard smoker and I would have never served that to people. read more

Awesome little local BBQ joint! Love the chicken strips too some of my favorite, they taste like the batter has pickle brine and it is delicious! Reasonably priced and large food portions. It doesn't look like it at first but this is a sit and order place. Autumn is one of the servers and she is completely amazing!! Such a wonderful young lady very polite and a very hard worker who made our experience the best and I'll definitely be back because of her! First, the food is so very delicious. I enjoy a good beef brisket sandwich but this one is heading in the direction of perfection. Tender and flavorful even before adding sauce and coleslaw. Fries and hush puppies complement the sandwiches so well but could be a satisfying meal on their own. We had a very nice young server who handled our group of 5 like a seasoned professional, patiently logging our orders and delivering them promptly. The atmosphere is very casual with sturdy picnic style tables outside and a simple utilitarian interior. A great place to eat on vacation or anytime. read more

The crab cake had very little filler, but for the price, it was small and over powered by the burger bun, which was disappointing. The service was quick and courteous. While the service here was great, the food was very disappointing. The pulled pork was extremely dry and way too vinegary for my preference. My family said that the fried chicken was fantastic, but this is not what I ordered. The first time we went, the ribs were good, but the second time they were very dry and overcooked. The NC OBX has many, many good restaurants. In the winter, quite a number of them close for the season. Thankfully Sooey's was open! Being native Eastern NC girls, we love good Eastern NC BBQ. The food was good here, though they were operating with a smaller staff -- typical with everything going on. We tipped the server really well, especially with the current environment of most places needing workers (and the ones who are working being overworked!). The food is good, but the place is small -- as crazy-busy as the OBX is in the summertime, I can't imagine trying to get in here between May - September. It was good in December, though. read more

We came across this place while visiting OBX for winter break, and I'm glad we did! It's a small, family-owned restaurant and the food is delicious! I had the ribs which were cooked to perfection! They were juicy and fall off the bone tender. For sides I had fries and baked beans. The fires were nice and crispy and the baked beans..... OMG, so flavorful and hearty! They had pieces of back in them and were so good! The beans could have been a meal themselves! We also tried the BBQ sandwich and wings. All were good. The service was excellent! This little hidden gem .. and I mean hidden did not disappoint. It sits off the main road across from large beach houses so best time to go is during the day when you can see it better. It is lit up kinda bright so that may help. This little spot gave us a taste of southern barbecue that was quite delicious. We had the NC shredded pork and spare ribs. The ribs were smoked with a light sauce and were quite tender and tasty. I had a side of coleslaw and baked beans which were pretty good. We also had the brisket which was absolutely amazing and a fried pork chop platter. The pork chops were a little tough though but the green beans and potato salad were impressive and I don't eat every ones potato salad. And then the sweet hush puppies were crazy delicious. So disappointing. When we learned of the devastating fire at our favorite BBQ place in Corolla, we decided to give Sooey's a try. Ordered ribs and pulled pork for takeout. Got home and only the ribs were in the aluminum container. No pulled pork. I even asked if the pork was in there when she handed me the container. She said yes. Turned out they got the order wrong. They did NOT charge me for the pulled pork. However they did charge me the 3% credit card fee even though I paid cash. My fault. I should have looked at the receipt. The ribs ended up in the trash. What little meat we found was very tough. This is the first time I have ever purchased ribs when I had to pay extra for BBQ sauce to accompany them. The sauce was very good, as it should be for about 4 ounces at $2.99. read more

Horrible food. Fried chicken was leftovers put back in the fryer - dry as a bone and way over cooked. I think the ribs were made sometime in the last century - again dry as could be & tough as shoe leather. The cole slaw was simply chopped cabbage with no sauce. Same for the hushpuppies, they were burnt. The single positive was that the baked beans were okay. I would say avoid this place at all cost - get your BBQ fix anywhere else. read more

Fantastic. .. the three if us went in last week around noon.. bbq was just right..not over cooked..not under cooked..perfect..not greasy..spices were spot in to enhance..not over power! I am happy to increase my rating for Sooey's by a star to 2-1/2. This is a case of giving them the benefit of the doubt and a second chance for being Advantage Dining. Our first visit here was one of those "one and done" experiences. You can read my previous review and I won't repeat all the issues here. We returned simply because in looking at their menu, we noted they have been voted best Fried Chicken in years past and I talked Ms T into returning. Well, I did really like the fried chicken. It was fried darker than some and I attribute that to it having more seasonings in the coating, which I liked. The coating is very light and it was fried nicely crisp. Ms T still likes High Cotton's chicken better but I could go either way. This is four star chicken. Since we received two sides with our chicken, we risked slaw again and green beans. The slaw was totally different from our first trip when it was straight from the grocer's bag. This was chopped medium and dressed with a creamy dressing that was on the bland side. I fixed that with Texas Pete. It just needed the splash of vinegar and it was good. Lately I have been getting green beans that are straight out of the can (High Cotton, Spanky's Darrell's). The notable exception was Sam & Omie's. Sooey's have a lot of bacon and a ton of onion. Were it not for the over use of onion they would be pretty good, but they are still better than most. The hushpuppies were over fried dark and smelled so strong of onion that neither of us ate one. In summary: Recommended - Fried chicken OK - Pork Barbecue, slaw, green beans, collards Hideous - Pulled Chicken, Ribs, Hushpuppies If you want Eastern North Carolina barbecue, go to High Cotton, Darrell's or TL's (and now also Carolina in Manteo). If you want fried chicken Sooey's is a good bet. If you want ribs and can't take the time to drive to Memphis, maybe try Pig Man's (I have not yet) or just forget it.
