I've never had a wet burrito before. It's a fairly unique experience but I think quantity was heavily emphasized over quality. But I do give the chef props for topping the burrito off with a Mexican-like flag. I think that was the most amusing part of the experience. Actually no. The murals on the walls certainly brought back my Chicana/o days. Ruben Salazar! Now back onto TLF! The chicken certainly didn't taste all that tasty. It was like super dried and super flakey and tasted like beef. I don't know. It was my first and probably my last wet burrito. My vallate papillaes weren't all that ecstatic. Now onto the service (or at least from what I observed). The father/owner (wild guess here) needs to take a chill pill. There's no need to rush your employee (in this case, perhaps it was his daughter). If there's something that needs to be fixed, you should lead by example instead of hushing your employees across the restaurant to do it. This is the nearest decent Mexican place near me, and I've been coming here regularly ever since I moved to the area. My go-tos are the burritos (the carnitas is great!) and the combination plate, which is a great way to taste multiple things (I like the tacos and the tostada, but everything is pretty good). Orders come with chips, which is nice. I wouldn't say Taqueria La Familia has the best Mexican food that I've ever tasted, but it's really good - definitely up there with any restaurant that I've tried that doesn't require a trip into the city. These were the TASTIEST fish tacos I've ever had in the Bay Area. The restaurant has a very homey vibe and look to it that I really liked--complete with outdoor seating. The street parking between Shattuck and Ashby is certainly not the best but is well worth it to eat here! They were so damn good that I'm here on Yelp not twenty minutes after my meal to write my first review in over a year. The last time I had a fish taco was for $7 at one of the Off the Grid trucks and it isn't even in the same league. However, I am TEMPTED TO KNOCK OFF A STAR because of the rather hilarious and... daft conversation I had to have with the cashier. I'm still scratching my head trying to figure out what happened. About 10 minutes later, Same girl who took our order brought over the food to our table. The food looked great, but it was so packed onto each plate/basket I asked her for an extra plate. She said no problem~ A few minutes later, I look back towards the kitchen wondering if she might be caught up taking orders or something. She was just standing there behind the register staring off into space. There was no one in line... Our table was the first row right next to said counter--like she was within earshot of me sitting down lol. I got up, walked in front and asked for that extra plate. W: "Huh...? Oh... here you go" Maybe she was just having an off day. Local spot for me *thumbs up As I was writing this review, I started out giving this place 4 starts because they never seem to disappoint me, but I sometimes have to wait a while. I've tried their tiny street tacos ($1.95, 3 filled me up), taco salad, burritos, and steak quesadilla. Everything is always cooked to order and full of flavor, I always seemed to crave for more. The chips I believe are house made and pretty good too, they come with most meals but you can get a whole bag for $1.00. FYI around lunch time is busy so expect to wait 10-20min from ordering until you get your food. If you're lucky they will pick up the phone if you call ahead to order. It's not disgusting, but it's not outstanding. I'm not from around Berkeley so I can't say I recommend this place because I haven't tried any other Mexican food joint out here (yet). I only came here because it was near my boyfriend's house and we decided on Mexican food. I just want to start off by saying that on their menu it says the soft tacos come with sour cream and guacamole. My FOUR tacos did not come with sour cream or guac. I was disappointed because those are my favorites. I got the boyfriend a chicken burrito. He enjoyed it. They put sour cream in his, but no guac. Hmm... I paid an extra $1.25 for that sh/t. Seriously? The least you guys could have done was put some in his... Haha. Whatever though. I can't say the food was terrible. My tacos were pretty big. Now that I'm thinking about it my meat to rice ratio was way off. I believe I enjoyed the food mainly because I didn't eat at work so this was my first real meal of the day. I spent a good $25 here. My boyfriend ordered the regular wet burrito with carne asada and I got a beef regular wet burrito with salsa verde. You can choose from pinto, black, or refried beans and all the wet burritos come with guacamole and sour cream on top. The food itself had good flavor and the right burrito to salsa ratio. The portion size was large - I wasn't able to finish and was definitely full in the end. The only thing I'd change would be to ask for carne asada rather than beef next time because when you ask for beef they give you shredded beef rather than the steak, rookie mistake. Their tacos are incredible - on top of just the meat, they have flavorful tortillas, rice, beans, lettuce, salsa, and cheese all in their standard taco! The best burritos in the neighborhood. Clean and friendly, just really solid burritos.

Got some take out there around 8pm on a Friday. Place as completely empty and looked as though they were cleaning up to close soon. I was hesitant but we pulled the trigger anyway. Crispy tacos were ok, chicken in them was really good! Though the plata I got were two enchiladas that were only filled with cheese but also filled with the verde sauce, not mojo as I had ordered. It tasted fine but overall each food item felt as if it was missing something... Rice was not very flavorful and same with beans. Not great but not bad. Maybe another try down the road read more

When the taco hankerings hit, nothing satisfies like the pescado version at La Familia. I go into mental culinary reveries on the regular - lightly battered, crunchy chunks of fish piled high with shredded cabbage and tomato, sprinkled with lime and doused in spicy verde salsa - they are the stuff of which cravings are made. Pack away two and one of their fresh agua frescas (the cantelope is pulpy wonderful) and I'm fueled for hours. Were it not for the brilliant mural and crinkled eyes of the staff, the ambiance wouldn't stand out. But the fare speaks volumes. Long overdue review. I grew up around the corner from Taqueria La Familia and have been a customer for years. I love the fish tacos, and the crispy chicken tacos. (the rest of the menu is great too, but I cannot get enough of these and find it hard to deviate in my order). Get the salsa verde. It's insane. The appeal of TLF goes deeper than the food though. This is a genuine, family run local business. Maria and Ken are warm, welcoming and treat their customers like family. I always feel a bit like I'm coming home when I visit. To the hipster losers complaining about a lack of vegetarian/vegan options? GTF over it. Go eat at Shangri La, or wherever you hamsters like to eat. It's not this restaurant's fault you choose to artificially restrict your diet. Maybe this isn't for you. Not a reason to dock stars. People really get hung up on stupidities: Cheap decor, or you gotta pay for chips, or the owners' teenagers work the place & aren't the friendliest, etc. You see that one dollar sign? I have driven by the big, bright FISH TACOS sign hundreds of times, but had yet to venture in before today. I can't believe what I have been missing out on! Best fish tacos ever. Seriously.. for less than $3, I thought I'd get 2 for a satisfactory lunch. Totally did not expect the heaps of stuff atop the tacos. Cabbage, tomatoes, sour cream... mmmm. The fish is lightly fried, and so good. There's a lot of it, too. Delicious with some squirts of spicy sauce. I used the second tortilla to turn the taco into a baby burrito (basically wrapped all the filling between tortillas because there was just too much stuff!) First thing I noticed upon walking in was the utter kindness and care that Ken, the owner, has for his customers. He addressed each person in front of me and me with friendliness that is hard to come by these days. I can tell he cares about his work, his food, and his customers. The food was excellent! He gave me a sample of the carnitas and it was perfectly cooked - not mushy and liquidy like some places, but with the meat still in tact...like a good moist pulled pork. So I got the super burrito and an horchata and both were really good. I'm giving 5 stars because his love made an already phenomenal burrito taste that much better! Definitely going back. I love this place and I have been meaning to Yelp about it but I can't quite find the words to explain why it is so great. It is sort of like going over to a friend's house and having her mother make you a plate (as long as your friend's mother makes perfect beans, excellent corn chips, tasty salsas, great guacamole...) Just go try it and see for yourself. The combo plates are only $6 so what have you got to lose? Speaking of the value I have to say I think La Familia beats El Metate for fish taco value - though La Familia charges $2.75 for a "single" fish taco, it twice the size of an El Metate fish taco. They give you two corn tortilla and I have to divide the filling between the two tortillas to make a reasonable sized taco. Plus the La Familia fish is much tastier. (I don't mean to speak ill of El Metate, I am a fan of El Metate) La Familia has a sign that has a neon fish and the words fish tacos which makes it easy to find. read more

It's like "I'm eating, but I can't distinguish what the flavors are...so what the heck am I eating for?" Sour cream and guac are an additional $1.25, but they give you like 2 tbsp worth in total. Do not get the add on. In general, it just isn't worth it. It's too costly for what you get. Do not go here when there is Berkeley Bowl right around the corner, like foreals. Also, 4 of us wanted to order carnitas, but by 8pm on a Weds they ran out. I really hate when restaurants do that. This is the second best Mexican food I have found in Berkeley (Celia's is better). The name is perfect, because you feel like you have walked into a family restaurant. Everything is made right in front of you, after you order it. That means it tastes fresh and it's hot when you eat it. Great carne asada tacos, yummy horchata, fresh salsa and chips. Prices are fair, too. It's definitely worth checking out. Parking in the area can be challenging, as it is right near the busy intersection of Ashby and Shattuck. I absolutely love this Taqueria, its one of the few authentic Mexican spots in Berkeley that sticks to its roots and hasn't been white washed or over run by hipsters or their scene; no Bull S*** gluten free tortillas or soy based carnitas here. I would have loved to have rated this place a perfect 5 Stars; because the atmosphere and customer service are always on point, but a few of the menu items have me uneasy. I like 90% of the items on their menu, the hard tacos are are always crunchy and cooked perfectly, and the burritos are always large and filling, but the quesadillas and the chorizo here are a joke in them self, the cheese never seems to be melted properly in the quesadillas and the chorizo tastes like over seasoned greasy ground beef. other than some minor issues that are easily fixable, this place is excellent, keep up the good work La Familia :) read more

The year was 2000. The dotcom bust was rapidly approaching but had not yet happened. Clinton was still president, and I had my first salaried, benefited, low-rung-but-on-the-ladder job. I had finally Gone West, Young Man, and made it to the revered Bay Area. Life, my friends, was good. Good because despite the job and the fun and the whathaveyou, I couldn't cook a meal to save my life, and these guys were in walking distance, friendly, and cheap enough to eat dinner from 2-4 times a week. They were a place that knew me and knew what I wanted and gave it to me. TIP #1: The menus are on a board all the way in the back, which is kind of awkward if there's a line snaking towards the door. TIP #2: Hot sauces are on the tables. You'll need them. The water is self-serve and near the cashier. You'll need water after you use the hot sauce! Everything is a 3-star "A-OK" about Taqueria La Familia, including the food, the price, and the service. It's a small restaurant that has the potential to be more popular, but its location is a little farther from the UC Berkeley campus and the hipper parts of Oakland for that to be true. A quick glance at their menu, and I settle on tacos--hard to go wrong with tacos. I order two: carnitas and chicken. At the cashier, I got a good view of the open kitchen behind--two other women were bustling about, grilling meat and assembling burritos. The cashier was clearly distracted (she pulled out her phone and started texting as my boyfriend was signing the receipt), which was a bit off-putting, but we got our orders in. All in all, a mediocre experience with service. The food comes within 10 minutes of ordering. We're brought free chips as well. My tacos are piled so high with rice, beans, meat, lettuce, and salsa that they were difficult to pick up with out spilling most of it out. Not that I was complaining--it was like I could have tacos and eat a taco salad too! The chicken, though charred and heavily spiced, was a bit dry and tasteless, and the corn tortillas were dry and tasteless too. The carnitas were more tender. You know your food is average when you need to add hot sauce for flavor. At $2.95 a pop, the tacos were just A-OK. Not the best tacos ever, since there are many other options for better Mexican food in Berkeley, but I can see myself coming back for a quick fix. read more

You know they're fresh because which one is spicier changes based on the season/shipment of peppers they have. BEANS: 4/5. Both pinto and black are solid, straight-up. RICE: 4/5. I was extremely surprised when I walked in and noticed how dirty this place was. Still we decided to give it a shot based on all the positive reviews. We ordered the burrito with camarones and chorizo with papas breakfast plate. The camarones were fishy and smelly. The tortilla and tortilla chips were both stale and have clearly been reheated multiple times. The chorizo plate was ok but looking around and noticing just how dirty this place was really ruined it for me. I'm not talking about a little trash or spilled beans here and there. I'm talking about dusty and dirty silverware, salsa bottles were filthy, kitchen looked like it had not seen a scrubbing in ages. The only positive thing is the staff were nice. read more
