    Omg the tacos are BOMB!!
    Matt C.

As someone who flies a lot, I have a short list of spots that offer exquisite cuisine at ungodly hours and this taqueria is at the top of my list for midnight tacos in Berkeley! I've been coming here for years (RIP to the salsa bar that existed before COVID stole it from us!)--but I remain loyal because of their fresh ingredients, succulent meats and authentic cuisine. This legendary spot is basically like the Abuela I never had who is always down to make me tacos whenever I'm coming back from Oakland airport and find myself driving down university avenue in the middle of the night

Carne asada burrito with spicy salsa

I was anxiously waiting on a call and realized I hadn't eaten so I headed into Monte Cristo Taqueria on a whim. The person who took my order was very attentive from the moment I stepped up to the counter to order. I ordered a carne asada burrito with spicy salsa. I was a bit indecisive but the person taking my order gave me a suggestion that worked well for me. The place was clean and the prices actually seem reasonable, which was a breath of fresh air. I got the call while I was waiting and the person who took my order was so kind to bring my order out to me which was completely unexpected. That kindness meant a lot to me during a not so great moment. I picked up a few salsas before I left. I was so pleasantly surprised by the burrito it was very good and full of flavor. The spicy salsa actually added a nice bit of spice. The salsa verde was nice and had a light flavor. The "spicy" salsa was also good. The more mild red salsa wasn't my favorite. I would definitely eat here again and recommend it to others. I might try some of the other items next time.

Absolutely delicious flan. Best I ever had. The taste of sweetened condensed milk and that caramel sauce Besides that I had the chimichanga plate with heaping piles of guacamole, sour cream, and pico de gallo. The chips were also really good! They tasted house-made and were thicker than other places. Only critique is that it would have been good to have the salsa in a bowl to dip but they came in sauce bottles instead. I'll definitely be back!

Open late! Order at the counter and they'll bring it to the table. Plenty of vegetarian options and they're clearly marked on the menu. We particularly recommend the enchiladas and the horchata, as well as all of the desserts (mmmm flan!). Not sure what it means that smiles are free on Wednesdays? Don't park in the lot, that's for customers of target and other places on that lot. There's metered street parking on university Ave but if you're here late enough it's free :) Plenty of room for big groups and you might even hear some live music. Restroom in the back.

i've lived so close to here for almost a year, and just now finally got to try it out! i can definitely say i've been missing out! i got a carne asada burrito, and it is huge! it can easily be split into two meals! the only downside is that they do kind of skimp on the meat hahaha the service is great! they prepared my food fast for pickup, and i can also see this as a great place to eat at with family. plenty of seating and a super fun vibe.

This taqueria has been on University for quite a few years, and I've noticed a lot of traffic coming in and out of their parking lot when I strolled by, especially cops for some reason. Well actually, I can see why since they serve old school, straight-ahead Mexican food with no frills. I decided to get a delivery from them for Jamie W. and me. Jamie went for the $10.80 Pollo Asado Burrito which was quite a stuffed monstrosity with adobo-marinated grilled chicken, black beans, and green tomatillo salsa (photo: https://bit.ly/3xsvoN3). Judging from the way he was gorging it, the burrito appeared to hit the spot for him even if it didn't have any veggies to complement the filling. I decided on the $17 Pozole Verde, which featured plenty of chicken and hominy in a tomatillo-infused soup filled with shredded cabbage, onion, oregano, and lime wedges (photo: https://bit.ly/319Itys). It would have been satisfying if it weren't oversalted. Oh well, I can think of worse sins...like a real Monte Cristo sandwich which they don't serve here. Gratefully. I would probably trust what the cops order. FOOD - 3 stars...sturdy and salty Mexican fast food AMBIANCE - n/a...just a delivery this time SERVICE - 3.5 stars...no complaints TOTAL - 3 stars...follow the cops here RELATED - Exploring Berkeley? Sometimes it's good to try something different and a place with some interesting character and characters. I usually get deli sandwiches which have deli meats but this place has fried chicken sandwiches . So I was craving a sandwich so I headed to Crave Subs in Downtown Berkeley next to BART station. They have lots of sandwiches available on the menu. On a Summer stroll getting some sun in Downtown Berkeley I landed at Crave Subs. Inside it's like you stepped into an ice cream parlor with a comic book shop and arcade and a deli all at the same time. You will see sandwiches on the menu called the Pikachu, Ned Flanders, and Bart Simpson. You will see Chewbacca fries along with the Spider-Man fries and the vegan Sailormoon fries. I got the Captain Boom Halal Fried Chicken, Boom Boom Sauce, Cheddar Cheese and Crave Sauce on a roll. It was tasty and a bit crunchy and had lots of flavor. It's one of the best Halal chicken sandwiches I had. If you crave a fried chicken sandwich then Crave Subs is the spot. It will "cost "you an extra 50 cents if you want to "floss" with extra drip "sauce" to show off on social media and during OSL my social media feed was stuck in the" Land of OZ" If you want great fried chicken sandwich you don't need to visit KFC or meet the chicken"commanders" like the late "Colonel Sanders" just get a Captain Boom with "Halal chicken standards" or grab a Pikachu sandwich or a turkey sandwich called the "Ned Flanders "

One of my biggest pet peeves is when restaurants reduce the guality or quantity of their meal to cut costs while charging premium prices. I will say I didn't mind paying a few dollars more for their subs in the past. I went there today for the first time in a couple of years, ordered a regular size basic ruben sandwich (no add-ons) and was ok paying nearly $18 dollars for just the sandwich until they handed it to me. what I got was a small 6" sub. When did their subs shrink?? in this economy we are all struggling. I get it, things cost more but Craves' owner is not doing his patrons a service by charging them premiums while cutting back on the meals. If you're ok paying that much for a shrunken sub, more power to you. I l, however, will not be going back there.

We found it very tasty, but paying over $25 for this on DoorDash--certainly not worth the price even though we really enjoyed it. The spicy chicken parm sandwiches were not good. The chicken breast was flabby, and came across like it was one of those frozen cooked Tyson jobs. I would be very surprised if they actually breaded chicken breast, fried it, and made the sandwich with that. It was mushy, and the breading was like paste on the chicken. Pretty awful. They charge extra for sauce, which is a little much, given that we paid $21 for each sandwich. But we figured out pretty quickly why they do this: there was hardly any sauce on the sandwiches. And precious little cheese. We each ate half of our sandwich and figured we doctor the leftovers up the next day with a jar of Rao's and a bag of shredded Italian cheese. That helped, but nothing could save that chicken. The meatballs. We paid $15 for four, and we had high hopes, but they were so mushy that they fell apart in the sauce, and I couldn't tell what was sauce and what was meatballs. The only flavor that came across was fennel. Why any meatball should be so fennel-forward strikes me as bizarre. We got what we thought were pretty basic things, and they were fails. If an Italian place can't make a decent chicken parm sandwich nor a decent meatball, that says something. If you go, try the pinsa.

Awhile back, I tried to bring as much business to Star Meat as I could because 1. it's a small business and 2. it's inside Star Grocery (which I LOVE, so it's convenient). When I would go there, there would often be 2 or 3 people behind the counter and oftentimes I would be the only customer. I felt like I had to stand there forever before anyone even acknowledged I existed. Each person would be busy doing something, but there was no "I'll be with you in 2 minutes." Finally, I went one day and there were 3 workers behind the counter chatting with each other. I was the only customer and was standing around 6 feet away from them, looking right at them. They went on with there conversation (not doing any other work) for a full 5 minutes. Finally I thought, "OK, they really don't seem to want my business, so I can go to any one of 4 other places and get what I want." That was a year or two ago. So, today I thought, why not give it another try, it's certainly convenient. Again, I'm the only customer at the counter. One guy is washing equipment and two guys are making sandwiches. I know that they know that I'm there, there are mirrors all along the back wall exactly for the purpose of seeing the customers. After around 4 minutes I think, who knows how long I'm going to be standing here. Maybe they have to make 20 sandwiches and I'll be here for a half hour. So, I left. I don't have anything like this experience at the 4 other meat counters I go to in the area. I'm totally fine waiting if I have some sense that I'm waiting for a purpose and that the worker will get to me as soon as they can. But at Star Meat, it feels like I'm more of an inconvenience than a customer. "Hi, I'll be with you as soon as I can," goes a long way.
