Our absolute, hands-down favorite Mexican restaurant in the whole bay! My wife and I were raised on home-cooked Mexican food in Los Angeles, so when we moved to the bay area, we tried as many places as we could find (mostly all decent, it's still California after all) but this place tastes like home! They have menudo and pozole, rich and flavorful but not too greasy, high-quality without getting too fancy. Generous portions, fresh tortilla chips, lots of yummy salsas, and plenty of Mexican sodas. Great taco Tuesday prices too! The entire place is covered in tiles and bright colors, the service is great, and they can accommodate custom orders like no dairy or crispy tortillas (if you ask nicely). This was recommended but I think it was a bit bland or at least lacking in verve despite choosing spicy salsa. I've definitely eaten much better. Absolute ableist lazy garbage people. Lazy, uncommunicative, pick up time is always half an hour later than it says in an app. When you walk in there to try and find out what's going on, the music is so earsplitting and they won't turn the music down to listen to you if you're wearing a mask. So they hate disabled people too. Like that's literally a violation of the ADA, to demand someone take off their mask because you can't hear them because your music is too loud. Placed an order for pick up and the DoorDash app said it was time to go inside and pick up our order so we did. The staff inside had the music blaring so loudly that my friend had to take off her respirator and she's immuno compromised just so they could hear her. These are ableist jerks. On top of that when it was trying to pick up the order in the DoorDash app, my friend walked into the restaurant to pick up our order physically and they said it wasn't ready yet. Now it's running 20 minutes behind schedule. I will never give these people my business or time again, I will warn every disabled and Covid conscious and chronically ill person to not go there because they won't turn down the music and they'll pretend not to hear you if you're wearing a full face mask. The horrible timing is just not worth it. read more

Well we read the Yelp reviews so we gave it a try. We had a chicken burrito and it was just ok. We opted for the extra charge of guacamole and felt it wasn't worth it. We asked for whole pinto beans but it sure seemed like refried beans. read more

Recommended, will be back, and the food was great! Sopes just might be my favorite Mexican dish, so I ordered the Sopes plate with carne asada, hot chocolate because it's been extremely chilly as of late, and a strawberry margarita. Hot and cold drinks together are the best of both worlds. It could be snowing outside and I'd still get a cold beverage. Love the clay mugs the hot chocolate came in. It kept hot while I focused on my marg. I thought I'd be able to body my plate because i was so hungry, but I ended up taking a sope home for leftovers, which was just as delicious the next day. Something really nice happened here. Apparently my margarita tasted too much like lime to who I assume is the owner, and he came by my table with another margarita on the house. That was thoughtful and something my friend and I really appreciated because who doesn't like a free drink? But seriously, it's the customer service behind serving something up to a standard that one feels confident in that really stood out. This looks like a popular spot. Talavera is a great Mexican restaurant located on Solano Ave. It gets busy during certain hours but fortunately there is plenty of seating both inside and outside of the restaurant. The simple process of ordering the food at the register, taking a number, and the time to prepare the food is fast. All the food the kitchen made looked amazing. I ordered: Ahogada Torta: this is a pulled pork torta covered in a delicious rojo or red sauce, topped with avocado, onions, and jalapeños. Delicious and satisfying. We were looking for a half way point to meet a friend for dinner and landed on Taqueria Talavera as our destination, because who doesn't love Mexican food? This is a casual and small restaurant that also has outdoor seating for warm summer evenings... which this year are a mythical event. So we ate inside. diners place orders with the cashier, and grab a number to take to their selected table. Some tables are by the open kitchen so you can watch the chefs work their magic! We ordered the Talavera Nachos with black beans and a side of the most delicious guac to share. Nachos were layered with the good stuff so every chip had something on it. Yum! Friend ordered the three taco plate with both beef options and one chorizo. Husband ordered the shrimp taco, and I had the "custom" plate and selected the pork carnitas and two chicken tacos--this came with rice and beans--I chose refried beans. I split this plate with my husband. Everything we had was slammin' good! Carnitas were well seasoned, crunchy bits on the edges and juicy otherwise, with just enough succulent fat. I tasted the chicken from a taco, and it was moist and flavorful--but hubby ate the tacos. Our friend devoured her tacos and loved each one. The shrimp taco looked and smelled amazing, and I was too full to get a taste, so have to trust it was as good as my husband said it was. Only downfall was it fell apart when he tried to eat it like a taco, and ended up using a fork--but who really cares about that?! We also had a Mexican hot chocolate and Mexican mocha, which were yummy. We looked at the breakfast menu and will be back soon -- maybe today-- to try some of the delights! Taqueria Talavera was good! I'm a burrito person and decided to try a different type of burrito instead of my regular carne asada. I decided to go with the specialty Mole burrito and it was spicy and flavorful, I was shocked how good it was. They had music playing also, so while you wait for your food you can could enjoy the music. The service was fast and efficient although I showed up close to closing time, I would for sure eat here again. read more

Found this spot while taking a walk and decided to grab a quick bite! Ordered some conchas, a chile relleno plate, chicken enchiladas with salsa verde, and a horchata latte. Chile relleno plate was okay! Definitely filling however it wasn't MY favorite.. I definitely enjoyed my boyfriend's chicken enchiladas a lot better. Horchata latte was a little too grainy for my liking, and conchas were actually great! For sure coming back for breakfast to try their chilaquiles and other drinks next time! Really amazing platanos (plantains) and excellent tacos de papa (potato tacos). You can order the platanos as a side or a dish with black beans (and sour cream). When I'm in Berkeley, I try to at least stop off for side of platanos. Many Mexican restaurants are getting on-board the potato taco train, and I couldn't be happier. Fried hard shell with a mash of potatoes inside and cabbage, crema and pico de gallo on top. Yummmmm! Once you order, there are a good number of spots inside. If it's nice out, there's plenty of outdoor seating. They bring your food to the table once it's ready. read more

We love this place especially their Taco Tuesday. During Covid and soccer season we came here regularly for takeout. The service has always been excellent-- even when they are super busy. We still visit but not quite as often now but when we do, they always remember us. It's a nice feeling. I love the atmosphere, busy, bustling, vibrant. I think it's a little known fact that they actually have extra seating upstairs if it's packed downstairs and or outside. We sat up there a few times because it can get very busy. read more

My family has been going to Talavera for 10+ years. I feel like its tacos can hold their own with any Bay Area taqueria. We love the feel of the place and the friendly staff, and the food! It's the best Mexican food in the neighborhood. They are family owned and they truly care. It shows up the quality of the food and how delicious it always is. This place is so consistent that I come here at least once a week. These are the kind of people who deserve your support and money. The staff is awesome. Two words -- Mole Poblano. You can get it with chicken or pork, as a plate or in a burrito. Delicious. The decor inside is artistic and fun, and their outdoor patio is shaded by umbrellas. I have eaten the food from here to go a couple times and also attended a bday that they catered, and I've always enjoyed the food. Yesterday I went in with my son and his friend and we ate in. We sat on the top floor and enjoyed the music and the environment. The boys both got a carne asada burrito and chips/salsa (they both ate all of it). I got the carne asada torta and it was fantastic. I ate half because it was large and brought the other half home. My SO enjoyed it as well. It had beef, onions, lettuce, beans, cojito, tomato. Super delicious, and I always order tortas, so top stars. I got my SO a breakfast burrito with chorizp and red sauce on it. He was super pumped. He goes with his coworkers sometimes but has never tried the breakfast burrito. He said it was the best thing he's had from there. The food today was delicious -- a carnitas burrito that was well-seasoned and had a great spicy salsa -- but noticeably smaller than other local places at this price point and MUCH smaller than the burrito we saw someone else eating here earlier this week. So a little disappointing. Earlier in the week, we had plates of carnitas tacos, fish tacos, and chorizo tacos on Taco Tuesday. The chorizo was excellent; the carnitas were very good as well. The fish were okay. Their patio is not fancy but pleasant -- spread out for covid safety, and the colored flags add a festive flair. Service was adequate, though not especially friendly. Parking was free on Solano and in the neighborhood. Bottom line: We'll likely give it another chance on the strength of the first (taco) visit. But they took a hit today. read more

I had a shrimp burrito last night. It was not only good sized but hot in temperature. That was a really good sign. Never had I enjoyed something that hot. The shrimp were large. It's probably one of the better burritos around. One thing I did notice that at night while sleeping my mouth was dry. I attribute it to this dinner. You order at the register and they deliver to your table. The ambiance was okay. They have outdoor and indoor ground level and upstairs dining. Worth going to. This Taqueria is located right on Solano Ave in Albany with casual outdoor patio and indoor dining. Inside dining is enough for about 24 people. It's on a strip with other ethnic restaurants and boutique shopping stores. Was nearby for a medical appointment and stopped in to get a To-Go order of their chicken flautas (taquitos) and agua fresca drink. They had pineapple, hisbiscus, tamarind, and horchata available that day - so I asked for half hisbiscus and half pineapple, which they happily obliged. There's a digital music box playing latin tunes, and I was tempted to try one of their desserts but will have to return next time to chow down on that and try their other options. Love their beverage selection: the usual agua frescas, Mexican coke, Mexican hot cocoa, cappuccino, expresso, Americano, Jarritos, margarita, sangria, homemade Michelada, tequila and mexican beer. There's also a small kids menu for those under 10 years old. They also have a Taco Tuesday special of $2.50 per taco. Shrimp or fish (Baja style) Taco Tuesday special is $3. My flautas were nice and crispy with a good amount of chunky cotija cheese, served with a small side of salad greens and dipping containers of green and red salsa. I wish they had pickled veggies to add to this, as well as a taco salad bar like other taquerias. Overall seems like a solid place that I would return to with friends. read more

Authentic Tacos on Solano!?!? First time here, and I was overwhelmed by the positive energy even before the tacos touched my lips. The staff was patient and engaging, which made me feel like a regular despite this being my first visit. I'm not surprised that this is a family-owned business. I absolutely loved this restaurant. Food so homey, vibes immaculate. The food was less salty than usual and it let the flavors really come through. We got the pozole which came with chips and chicken enchiladas which were super solid and came with rice and beans. But U think the highlight was the horchata latte if i'm being honest. I'd never had it before and it was sooo fragrant. My thing with horchata is that it can be way too sweet for me but having it with coffee made it so balanced. Lastly we got the choco flan (chocolate cake with flan on top) and it tasted like the imagery of a content abuelita making it and being really proud of her work. I'm used to asian-style flan which is more jelly-like, but this one was definitely more dense, almost like mousse. Btw pozole is served daily, not just in the weekends here. They have an upstairs area for seating that's a bit more private. read more
