I can't believe I didn't know about this place before. With the numerous excellent Mexican spots abounding in Oakland, Richmond, San Pablo, Concord, and so forth, I'd never have imagined that some of the best Mexican food in the East Bay lies in a food court adjacent to Chez Panisse, across the street from the Cheese Board. Mexicana is particularly adept with proteins, and I can say that all of their meats and seafood are top-notch. The portions are ample and the value is very high - I frankly can't understand how their prices are so low given the location. The owner and his wife are lovely people as well, and I would really love to see them get their well-deserved success. read more

This place is great. Mexicana (which is actually called Mexicana Taqueria!!!) has great food and great service. We discovered this place completely by accident. We were supposed to meet friends next-door at Saul's, but the line was out the door and the wait time is 25 minutes. We wandered her to block down the street and discovered this lovely hole in the wall. They have a diverse menu with every thing you could want from a Mexican joint: enchiladas, fajitas, burritos (even breakfast burritos), tacos, even plates with plentiful vegetables, rice, beans, and salsa. There are places to sit outside both around back in the garden and out front in the sun. The people who were here are super nice (and will even give you extra cheese if you ask!) Mexicana is not a sit down, per se, restaurant. There are counters and stools you can use if you choose to eat there. The food is authentic and delicious. I bought the two taco plate ( one chicken and one carne asada) and the raja plate. The chicken and carne asada were grilled and seasoned perfectly. The cheese served with the raja was covered in a mildly spicy tomato sauce... delicious. I highly recommend trying it out. read more

We have been going to Mexicana ever since it opened--it is a hidden gem, tucked near the back of the food court on Shattuck in North Berkeley. (Unfortunately, easy to miss, which means that many are missing out.) The burritos are fresh, flavorful, and generous. The green pozole tastes like grandma made it--just the right amount of kick and tang. Amazingly, they have really delicious jamabalaya, too -- the only Mexican restaurant I've ever been to that adds a Cajun dish: the shrimp is juicy, the sausage is distinct, but not overpowering. The cook and servers are welcoming and efficient. Buy a dish to take home, or eat it in the beautiful garden in the back, which is lovely and generally not crowded. read more

The food was authentically good. The chips and salsa were an additional order. The pico, cilantro and onions were freshly cut. The chili sauce was spicy hot. Chilaquiles ought to be impossible to screw up like this. Should be this easy. Tomato juice soaked tortilla chips, cover in eggs, cheese, beans, onions and cilantro, bake to melt cheese, wins every time. How can that combination possibly fail? Planned on lunching with a friend at a restaurant that was closed for a private event, and we ended up here. I was not feeling it as I had had Mexican the night before. Alas, friend wanted Mexican. I ended up ordering a carnitas quesadilla; I am partial to quesadillas. This was by far the best quesadilla I have ever had. The ingredients were so fresh and full of robust flavor. Unlike with most quesadillas, the cheese wasn't just there to drown everything out with its glorious comfort food crown, it somehow waltzed with the tasty carnitas and the other ingredients. IMO this is considered a skinny mini burrito. Meant for a child. The circumference is barely bigger than a standard 24oz water bottle. I didn't see nor taste any cheese in this "bean rice and cheese burrito." When I questioned the staff, none of them offered to address or fix the discrepancy at all. I can pay $2 more at a chipotle to have unlimited toppings (except guacamole) and double up on everything. Chipotles burrito will be like 2-3 meals depending on how much you eat. This was surprisingly reasonably priced Mexican food with a lovely outside seating area (the Epicurious Gardens). We all got burritos and guacamole, so I would like to return to try the torta and tacos to have a more rounded experience. The food was slightly under salted or spiced, but salsa fixes that. My friends and I came around 5pm on a Saturday and the restaurant is located inside a food court. The food court was empty and had no wait. We walked around the area and it was very well cleaned and plenty of outside seating and most were shaded. Metered Parking could tough on Shattuck but you can find parking on the side streets. Ordered the $9.75 sautéed tofu burrito and watched them make the food in front of me. They prepared the burrito with rice, beans, lettuce, pico de gallo, and sour cream, the sauce that was used to sautéed the tofu was amazing. The whole burrito was overall 10/10. Every bite was like flavorful, full, saucy, and tofu just melts in your mouth. It came with chips and salsa which were both fresh! The chips were crispy and thick. Salsa also pairs well with the burrito. read more

After moving our son into his dorm, we came here to get some food. The man and woman and young kid at the counter were all so nice! Truly kind, warm people. The food was delicious! This is our go-to place for take-out: good food, fair prices, and kind folks working here. We have a range of food preferences/ restrictions that Mexicana is consistently good about accommodating. Our favorites: chicken quesadillas, each of the tacos, and the burritos with a side of guacamole. Sauces (and the guacamole) are mildly spicy, for those sensitive to spice. Definitely recommended. Restaurants like this truly make North Berkeley seem like its own small community. After going to Mexicana several times a month, I took a hiatus. The staff still remembered me when I returned. I always get a simple rice and beans burrito with guacamole and sour cream. Without any salsa, it can taste a little dry. Pour a ton of salsa over it and wow! Pretty darn good. He remembers my whole family each time we come which is weekly these days :) His service goes above and beyond and not something you often find these days. Located in a small food court/shopping center, this restaurant was a great choice for lunch. While they didn't have indoor seating, there were tables just located outside the court. Originally craving pasta that's located just next door (unfortunately, the chef passed away and they are no longer open), my family and I decided to give this place a try. The service was great and quick; the staff were especially friendly! We ordered carne asada quesadilla, the boss's (breakfast) burrito, pollo asada burrito bowl, and a mexicana salad. Mexicana has a reliable online ordering system. Our order was ready exactly on time. This sounds like No Big Deal, but some other places rely on telephone ordering, frequently screw things up and tend to finish orders only when customers arrive. Mexicana's prices are totally reasonable; service is rendered with a smile. The menu is not exactly extensive, which is a small negative, but included something that looked tempting -- the spicy shrimp plato -- and turned out to be delicious. The plato consisted of the shrimp, some rice and a heap of grilled vegetables. One reason I liked the plato is that the veggies were a welcome change from the black or pinto beans that you get everywhere else. The salsas were fine too. read more

My wife works near this place. I've seen it before and wanted to check it out. While I was in the area, I decided to get a burrito. One couple was in front of me. I ordered a super steak burrito that came up to $13+. Another person ordered after me and then 4 more people. I noticed the person after me got his burrito first, and then he came back and told them he didn't order sour cream in his. He ordered a vegetarian burrito. I asked if that was my burrito? I was completely ignored. Watching the cook, I guess if you're a regular customer, you get first dibs and chat. Everyone after me got their food. I walked up to ask, and they had to ask what I ordered. Even more people are getting their food. I ask again, where's my order. The lady is finally finished making my burrito and says hold on a sec. Don't waste your time. The price is too high for mediocre food and service, which is no good. Cook needs to worry about the orders rather than talking it up to his friends.
