Stopped in on this July 4th afternoon after leisurely drive with a morning stop at the Stockton Market before they closed at noon. Came in thru Pa. Rt. 32 and across the bridge which luckily was operating only back into NJ. Made welcome with cool AC and friendly welcome by bar staff. Most seats taken, but served immediately and given food menu. Asian Fusion - had freshly made and delicious appetizers, and relaxed in really nice total environment. Definitely put on the 'will return soon' list. read more

Oh where do I start...I leave NYC every weekend to come eat and drink at the National. If I could give an establishment a 6 star review, this would be it. With such a cozy atmosphere, lovely live music, wonderfully crafted drinks, and a delicious Asian fusion menu, this is the place to go! The staff here are wonderful as well, with the owner Cara being so alert. She really goes above and beyond to make sure that her customers are well fed and enjoy their experiance. To wrap this up, I wanted to recommend that Korean krispy chicken burger. The sandwhich truly is cooked to crispy perfection with a side of fries and spicy mayo sauce to accompany it (I may or may not ask for an entire bowl of this sauce on the side). The National Hotel has a spectacular menu with options for everyone. I've been here with vegetarians, carnivores, gluten-free, adventurous and non-adventurous eaters - and everyone was delighted. The cocktails and wine list measure up too. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting, whether you're on the front porch, tucked into the sushi bar, seated at the long old-fashioned bar, or sitting at any of the regular tables. I've lived in the area for many years. Was really excited to hear that The National was reopening. At first glance, a beautiful space and after eating there several times I was pleased with the food and cocktails. What is lacking is the wait staff. I'm not sure if they are instructed to rush you through your meal, but each and every time this is happening. The last time we went the waitress literally picked up the plate of appetizers before asking if we were done. Again...rushing us through each phase of our dining experience. Zero stars! Stay as far away from this hotel as possible. I honestly don't even know where to begin. My boyfriend found their website online and based on the description and pictures, it looked like a nice place to stay for $300+ a night for a weekend getaway. It was a two night minimum and you have to pay for the first night up front. (Red flag). We arrived shortly after 5pm on 6/30/23. We parked in the rear of the hotel. While I understand that the hotel is very old, the upkeep was a disaster. We walked to the front of the hotel to check in. There was no front desk or anyone that looked like hotel staff to greet us. We had to find someone to help us. We poked our heads into bar that is attached to the hotel as there were some people there. We asked the bartender who we see to check in and she advised that "we have been waiting for you". We came to find out that we were the only patrons staying at the hotel that evening and honestly probably ever! We were then told to follow a gentleman up to our room that they "just put the AC on in to have it ready for us". We get to our room, and we are greeted by cheap laminate flooring, a full bed with a cheap "memory foam" mattress, no dresser and furniture and decor from Home Goods (we know because they left the tags on the throw pillows. Our room key opened our door and the rear exit porgy door. We got our bags via the porch (no one offered to get them despite the fact that we were the only patrons in the place). There was a spackle bucket full of some very green water on the porch. Very classy. We brought our bags up, and could not really unpack so we went downstairs to grab a drink and a bit to eat from the "remodeled bar and restaurant" expecting to "indulge in delectable cuisine and the tranquility and elegance of the National Hotel". We got to the bar (which is actually lovely) and asked for menus to eat. The bartender and owner of the hotel, Cara, advised the restaurant is not up and running yet and would not be for another month or so. (Please refer to their website: www.thenationalfrenchtown.com for all of your misleading and false advertising viewing pleasure). We then headed out to grab food elsewhere. We walked back to the hotel around 8:30-9pm to find the bar was packed with people both inside the bar, in the hotel common areas and the front porch. Maybe things were looking up....... We went up to our room to freshen up. After using the restroom, we discovered that the toilet was broken and didn't flush. So we went downstairs to tell the owner who was very busy tending the bar about the toilet. She called upon that same gentleman to check it out. He came back advising that he could not fix it and they would be "upgrading" us to another room. Upgrade? Really? You had to accommodate us to a room with a functioning toilet. We then had to move all of our stuff to the new room. This room was bigger but same cheap updates. I have to say the embroidered robes that say "The National Hotel and Steakhouse" were very nice indeed. We decided to hang out on the porch upstairs for the reminder of the evening with some of our own drinks. We were up there until the bar noise faded and closed at 12am. We went to bed to watch some TV and go to sleep. The TV was not plugged in and not even set up! Off to bed we went. We woke up around 8:30am. It was a very rough sleep on the mattress provided. We both agreed that we were not interested in another night here. My BF went downstairs to speak to someone about checking out early only to find that there was not another person in the hotel and that the front and back doors were locked! He tried our only key/room key in the front door and back door and it did not work in those. If we had left early to take a walk or have breakfast somewhere we would not have been able to get in. We tried calling the main number on the website to speak to someone and there was no answer or answering machine after several tries. The locked us in the hotel without any notice. We checked out immediately after that around 11am (still no sign of anyone there). We left a note on the front door and took a picture of it. We have yet to receive a call back or anything like that to make up for all of this or for an apology- not that it would have mattered anyway. This is what $300+ will get you staying at The National Hotel in Frenchtown, NJ. Do yourself a favor and book a room near New Hooe for the same amount of money and a much better accommodations and experience. read more

My opinion on the hotel, it's just fine! Not great, not bad! The National Hotel Is in a quiet area full of excitement in the town of Frenchtown NJ! My pros and cons about this hotel Pros: Quiet Place, Lots of Parking, Bar is nice but a little out of style, Cons: Rooms were a little dirty/needed repairs, wasn't to happy about the hotel staff however the bar staff were great! Let me begin by saying that if you're considering staying in Frenchtown on a Monday night, you might reconsider it. Food options are limited and the restaurant at the hotel is closed. On to the hotel review. We arrived around 3pm. The doors were all locked. We finally noticed someone inside, who then let us in and gave us a key. And that's about how it went. We did see one more person that knocked on our door a little while later to ask if we needed anything. After that we didn't see anyone else in the hotel for the reminder of our stay. The room was not inexpensive: $300+ for a room on a Monday when we were the only guests. The room was fine. There was no soap or shampoo in the shower. No soap by the sink. Many small flies buzzing around by the windows. The bed was comfortable enough. Maybe if we were there on a Saturday I'd be writing a different review. I just expected a better experience for the cost. No reciept or sign of life in the morning. I didn't see the final total until I checked my CC bill a few days later. read more

We stopped in for a Saturday lunch and the server was very nice and prompt. I went with a Mexican Pepita Beef Sandwich ....................... $14 6 oz. Thinly Sliced & Breaded Beef, Avocado Mousee, Lettuce, Tomato & Onion, Fried Jalapeno on the Siide, Fresh Portuguese Roll, Served with Yucca Fries. The bread was very fresh and flavor wise the sandwich was nice. My only gripe was the beef. It was tough and the fat wasn't trimmed enough which caused one bite to pull a big chunk of fat and my sandwich fell apart ... for $14 you better give me a tender slice of beef. My son ordered their 3 cheese mac and cheese from the Kids Menu. It had a funky flavor and was basically shell pasta with a whole crap ton of gooey cheese. Def not what I'd put on a kids menu. Guys keep it simple and serve more of a kid friendly macaroni, or just a kids pasta. My wife did enjoy the fish & chips so that saved us all. Happy wife happy life. Beer wise they had a few taps that were a craft offering that complimented the food well. Overall I like the ambiance, the service and the vibe, but two out of three dishes were below my expectation. read more

We toys drive in the EV on a beautiful day. Decided to check this place out. Loved being the only other party of 2 in the bar area and a few more came in about the time we left. Great chef here good diverse menu. I had duck blt and house salad which is not the same old cucumber and tomato on greens the dill vinaigrette was very nice. Stayed here for a mid-week post Christmas overnight Date Night with my loving wife. We both totally enjoyed the experience! The historical character is amazing. This place was built in 1833 and even allegedly has a ghost! (We did not see it) As for the people, they are exceptionally friendly and helpful. Had some dinner, steak was perfectly cooked. For an appetizer earlier we had this tasty pastry that was filled with shrimp and crab! It was excellent, but sooo sweet that one was enough. Later we went down to the Rathskeller, the cellar bar area where Karaoke was going on. Met lots of friendly people as well (Hello Aly and Cole!!!) Really had a great experience....highly recommend The National Hotel for any couple that is looking for a great getaway at reasonable rates. The room was clean and fresh and came with a good sized jacuzzi tub that worked just fine!! read more

It's been a while since we've been here for dinner but went tonight for drinks and apps. My initial reaction was pretty poor - the bartender had a bit of an attitude (he thinks he's pretty cool) and was kind of slow taking our drink order. When I asked how he makes an old fashioned he said curtly "the normal way". And after probing come to find out he adds club soda to it. So NOT "the normal way". The drinks are small, the wings were good and plentiful and my wife loved the escargot. Will still go occasionally but this dude needs to lose the attitude. read more

Great place with a great food and a great owner. Everything on the menu is great, but the shrimp and grits is to die for.

I enjoy staying in these historic hotels, but have learned to temper my expectations. They are often "worn about the ears" with drafty, small rooms, narrow, creaky stairs, fluky wi-fi and sometimes not all rooms have their own bathroom. Entering the hotel, there is a small, nicely furnished sitting area next to the front desk with a bar/restaurant to the left. I loved the old photos of the hotel, which apparently has been there since the mid 1800's. The walk with our baggage up two flights stairs, sans air conditioning on this hot, humid day was no fun but we were greeted by a pleasantly cool room. The room was also a nice size, not the cramped quarters I've encountered in so many of these historic hotels. The bed, unfortunately, was not very comfortable. It was low and simply a mattress (and not a very good one) on a platform with no box spring. My wife, who has back issues, did not sleep well at all. I had no problem sleeping, but I'm an avid camper and found the bed comfortable when compared to sleeping on the ground (something I'm used to). However the one thing that stood out was when my wife noticed there was no coffee maker in the room. I'm not a coffee drinker but I know many of them and coffee in a hotel room, or at least coffee available in the hotel is apparently a big deal. I personally have never encountered a hotel that didn't have either a coffee maker in the room, or free coffee in the morning. Fortunately there was a gas station across the street and the first thing I did when I woke up was go to the gas station to get my wife her cup of coffee. That should not be necessary when you are paying over $100 a night. I had to make 3 trips to gas station to deliver her usual morning coffee fix. Another was the street traffic in the morning. I was woken up by the sound of a truck at about 5:30 a.m. and the traffic only increased as the morning wore on. I suggest that if you want to sleep in a bit, make sure you don't get a room that is adjacent to the street. On the positive side our room was clean and modern. The location was fantastic, smack in the middle of Frenchtown, with so many interesting things to do in the area. I would stay here again, but with tempered expectations. read more

With it's affordably priced menu, diverse selection of American cuisine, classy atmosphere, and professional staff, it's my go to spot for a quality experience.
