Black Bear Bread is a tiny cafe located near other businesses; it was packed when we arrived (in the morning) so the line was out the door. Upon entering, we noticed a clear display case stacked full of various pastries and bakery items -- there was also limited seating which would make it difficult to relax and enjoy your time, if you were to stay longer. The service was prompt however the environment and vibe of the place felt hurried and rushed. There was also a 15% gratuity automatically applied to each order, you may want to be mindful of that when frequenting this business. Decent vanilla latte but it's a latte. Ordered a $9 biscuit and I feel like I don't need to say much and let the pictures do it justice. I'm kind shocked that they would sell and serve something so pathetic. Biscuit was burnt on both sides. When you peeled off the burnt layer the inner layer just crumbled bc it was so dry and hard. No flavor. We told the lady and she gave us another biscuit that was just as bad. I should have asked for a refund but I will certainly not be coming back. Also, the automatic tipping is so distasteful plus there is a service fee in addition to the automatic tip. My favorite part thought is when they ask for a tip after they've already given themselves a tip (insert sarcasm). I asked them to remove the tip and could decide for myself if they deserved one. I know this place is popular but that's because once upon a time the biscuit was so soft, flavorful, and melted in your mouth. First time at this new location on grand Boulevard, it's in the Hyatt hotel... Fabulous in a word! Perfect coffee, and I am not a Starbucks fan by the way... The Bakery is incredibly good and fresh. The coffees are also delicious. It's a small store with limited flow and seating so there's a tendency for long lines to form outside and the place to get easily crowded affecting somewhat your privacy and comfort. The price is extremely overpriced. Watch out for the automatic 15% service added to your receipt (they don't tell you anything and they just bring your order to the table if you are seated or you just pick up your items if you are waiting in line). In addition, they'll ask you for a 3%, 5%, or 7% gratuity. If you aren't aware of the fact that the 15% service was already added, you end up giving more than 22% on a service that is similar to picking your grocery at the counter. The customers need to be made aware of this scam. read more

When you ask someone from Destin what they mean by bread, you will likely be pointed to a Sunbeam brand squishy material sold at grocery stores, a Wonder brand hamburger bun made out of low grade tire rubber spray painted white or another item of similar complexion that lines a Winn Dixie shelf. Now, this is not to put the people of Destin into a bad light, but it's the reality that most residents of the panhandle and visitors from southern states grew up with. The concept of bread was lost in America in the middle of 20th century through the introduction of other odd creations by Sunbeam, Nature's Own, Wonder and countless other brands that marketed their rubbery, elastic factory product as bread. Over the recent decade, Destin has undergone a huge transformation and Black Bear is part of that beautiful movement. There are now good hotels to stay in, several great restaurants where to eat and places like this. The bread is composed of 3-4 ingredients here, is crusty, wholesome and aromatic. It is world class. The sandwiches, despite being pricey, are absolutely delicious. Even examples like the Bahn Mi may not be traditional in the type of thicker bread used, are simply amazing. The kale sandwich, the croissants and the lattes, all are made with attention and bursting with flavor. One thing to keep in mind is that this is not a cheap place. This level of quality and quickness spoil has a price, so expect to be paying $15-$20 just for a sandwich. With that said, it's absolutely worth it. read more

Black Bear is the best place to visit for breakfast near Sandestin, and maybe even the best along 30A! This location is a bit smaller than the Black Bear in Santa Rosa, tucked on the side of the Hyatt hotel just down from the main tourist shopping area in Miramar Beach. There is ample free parking (golf carts allowed!), even on a busy day. On weekends in the summer, expect lines for brunch! It moves fast, but because the inside ordering area is small, the line will stretch outside of the restaurant. There is limited indoor seating, as well as tables on the patio. These are first come first serve. Not great for big parties (more than 6 people), but doable. Everything on the food menu is great -- I'm a big fan of the smoked salmon tartine, grain bowl, egg & sausage croissant, and daily frittata. There are also seasonal items like latkes which are usually fantastic. The items are priced fairly, incredibly fresh and colorful, and served in pretty large portions! If you want pastries like fresh baked cinnamon rolls, croissants, and pop tarts, you should aim to arrive before peak crowds (i.e before 10:00am). These often go fast because they're so tasty! For drinks, they have mimosa pitchers (!!!) and coffee supplies by Stumptown Roasters. I personally love their iced matcha latte, as well as ordering an iced latte with a pump of lavender. The seasonal specials are almost always delicious. Finally, service is always friendly and helpful. Even when busy, the staff are patient with your order and willing to offer suggestions. I would go back several times to this place The whole enforced 15% gratuity on every transaction to eat inside or order to go would change my mind to not going back anymore. And wait !!! After you are obligated to pay extra 15% on everything their system still asks you to leave additional 18-22% tip !!!! If I don't play attention, I could be leaving 40% gratuity .... FOR A COUNTER SERVICE PLACE This is disrespectful to your clientele, and very sketchy to just make more money from your clients. SO glad we stumbled across this spot when looking for some grub. Staff was very pleasant. Respectful of COVID restrictions and social distancing. Service was quick, fast, and professional. BEST baked goods and brunch in our area, period! The bread is fresh-baked and also available to take home. Typically they'll have baguettes, a few flavors of sourdough, bagels, etc. The desserts are fresh-baked and always a varied and unusual assortment (fig, goat cheese, and herb scone for instance - INCREDIBLE). The Stumptown coffee is phenomenal with many assorted specials to choose from such as my favorite with hazelnut and cinnamon. They serve breakfast foods such as frittatas, biscuits and gravy, egg dishes and sandwiches, etc. We have never eaten lunch here, but understand their BanMi sandwich is to die for! Now, as others have mentioned, this is a smaller location next to a Hyatt Place hotel. The line gets long on weekends and in summer but also moves quickly as their staff is efficient. You'll be waiting outside though, so be prepared as the ordering area inside is very small. There are paper menus but would suggest bringing it up on your phone to speed the line along. Only a few tables inside to dine, but quite a few outside, which are on the side of the building. Dogs are allowed at the outside tables. My issue was for the Benedict, croissant w egg/bacon, cheese danish, popmosa ($14), small latte, regular coffee, and cream soda was $80. Yup. Had I realized that ahead of time we would not have gone here. The food did not warrant those prices, in our opinion. We will not be going back. There's a small seating area on the inside and there's plenty of tables on the outside as well but both sit directly in the sun. My drink was okay, not terrible, not great. Could hardly taste the lavender. I also got some pastries to-go for my family. I wasn't offered to have anything warmed up, not a huge deal, but when I hear it offered to the next customer it's kind of annoying. Also, the pastries sit right next to the register- in Covid times, I found that a bit unusual.
