Around 4 pm on Friday, June 13th, 2025, 10 others and I who were attending a conference in Glendale, AZ came to BBD for dessert. Long story short, one-third of the way through enjoying it, I found a long blond hair in my cobbler. It happened that our server--who was gracious throughout her service to us--was at our table serving the last items from our order. I exclaimed, "Excuse me, but is this a hair?! I think this is a hair." She replied that it couldn't be, because all the cooks were men with short, dark hair. Nevertheless, after looking at it closely (and after getting verification from the person seated to my right that there did indeed appear to be a long, blond hair baked into the cobbler), our waitress removed the dish, saying as she did that she would send the manager over to speak with me. Several minutes later our waitress returned to the table and said to me, "We apologize for that. There will be no change for that dessert. Would you like to order something else?" I replied, "No thank you." I had not exclaimed loudly when I discovered the hair, nor did I make a big fuss when asking the waitress about it, so most others at the table continued eating undisturbed--while I worked to quiet my stomach. I did ponder all that had happened, especially noting that despite what the waitress had said, the manager did not come to our table to make sure all was well, nor to extend the apologies of the establishment for tainted food having been served. Just before the waitress brought the bill, it occurred to me that it would be a courtesy for Black Bear to deduct a portion from the bill equal to the value of the dessert as a token apology for the distress I'd experienced. I went to the manager and courteously asked if he would be willing to do that. He raised his voice to me, and said, "NO! Doing that would make it look like we had done it on purpose!" I said, (quietly) "Well, actually, I think it would make it look like you care about your patron's experience, and would show your establishment in a more favorable light since 'good news makes the paper, but bad news is repeated a thousand times.'" The manager then said, "Don't worry. I'll handle it." I said, "Do I understand you to mean that you will not only not charge for the tainted dessert, but also deduct from it a portion of the bill equal to the value of the dessert?" The manager turned away from me saying, "No. We are not going to do that!!" Just then, I looked up to see that my host was bringing the bill over to pay. I ended the conversation with the manager and returned to join the rest of our party, who were preparing to leave the table. Friends, I don't know which was more distressing to me that day: the discourteous conduct of the manager, or that I was served food with a hair in it! I'd like to know which of these painful events you feel most distressed about? I want to let you know that days later, when I returned to Tucson and called up "my local" BBD's manager, he was helpful, courteous, and informative, telling me the best way I could communicate my concerns to you. Went for dinner here last night for a belated birthday. I ordered the chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes & gravy, and onion rings. With the exception of the onion rings, a pretty TASTELESS plate of food. The gravy was like a paste with no flavor, and the potatoes had no flavor, as well. The chicken fried steak was the same, lacking flavor. If I were to guess, I would say that all of this food was prepackaged, probably sitting on a steam table in the back, I am the chicken fried steak was in a package and then cut open and fried to order. We had good service, but nothing to rave about. And the ambiance was casual with jukebox music playing. We've been coming to this location of BBD off and on for the better part of 13 years. When we first moved nearby we frequented the diner as the food was great and the service was excellent. Over the years it has both degraded, with the service hit or miss, either excellent or mediocre. We stopped coming as much since the service was just not predictable. In early June we stopped in around an hour before closing after an exhausting day. Wife wanted corned beef hash but they were out, so we decided to share a vegetarian omelette and the reuben sandwich. The food took almost 30 minutes even though the dining room was pretty much empty, and the reuben was just dry, hard, and after eating half of it, realized it was missing the sauerkraut and any semblance of thousand island dressing (see pics). I was exhausted and they were getting ready to close so I figured I'd just contact the corporate office, but I tried but never heard back. This evening was our first visit to this Black Bear Diner location and we will definitely be back! If you are looking for a wholesome home-cooked meal, this is the place to go. The food was delicious! We got the fish and chips and the open-faced turkey sandwich with mashed potatoes. The portions were big, enough for each of us to have leftovers for lunch tomorrow. The pricing was right for the amount of food you got. The staff was friendly and our waitress was very attentive. The only disappointment was they were out of everything we actually wanted! I wanted to try the huckleberry lemonade but our waitress said they were out of huckleberry. So I got raspberry instead. Then when our waitress came back we ordered the fried chicken and the tri tip dinner, and she informed us again, they were out. So that was highly disappointing but we still enjoyed the meals we ended up getting. Can't get orders correct or get all the food you paid for when picking up from this location. After a long "fix" we still had missing food when we got home to eat dinner. No managers were available to speak to until the following day. The manager Raul called and was not management material by a long shot. He was unpleasant, unprofessional, and did not care I felt he was not making the situation right. He was more then happy to lose our business permanently. He did exactly that. Please do yourself a favor and don't bother going to this location. We have had a lot more bad experiences the last few years then we have good ones. read more

I've lived in the neighborhood of blackbear diner for the last 20 years me and my family used to come here every single Saturday like clockwork, but ever since the order started getting wrong staff started getting more aggressive with their attitudes. We stopped coming now that my father has passed and we no longer do a lot of oriented Saturdays. We completely stopped coming to blackbear diner not to mention how the staff is now and they are extremely rude. I came to do a DoorDash order. It wasn't even ready. They told me it would be a few minutes. A few minutes turned into 10 minutes. Next thing you know I'm there for 15 minutes and I actually got asked about 15 different times what I was there for The staff is forgetful and the assistant manager or the manager or whoever the lady is walking around in an orange shirt is extremely rude. Our first time here....always look for a restaurant unlike what we have at home when traveling. On a whim I selected Black Bear. Glad I did. Our meals were fantastic. The stuffed french toast is to die for, and the pancakes are wonderful. The waitress was extremely kind and did a wonderful job. Sure wish I could remember her name?? The only downside is that we thought it was just a tad pricey for breakfast. Our bill was $40 for two of us. Not saying we would never go back because I'm sure we would if in the area again knowing that it was great food, but it is a bit pricier than other places. read more

This place SUCKS!! We always liked every location we've been to but this location is truly terrible. 2nd time to this location with same terrible server. I ordered Classic French Toast with Sugar free syrup & FRESH strawberries & blueberries. It is also supposed to come with a side of fresh fruit which I ordered Strawberries & Blueberries well. It came with blueberry compote (straight sugar) & strawberries were fresh & no side of fruit even though she said they were cutting it fresh for me in the back. About 1/2 through our meal the server checked on us and I told her this was not what I ordered - she said well don't have fresh blueberries. WHY she didn't tell me when I ordered is beyond me. Instead of fixing the plate she got pissy and WALKED AWAY from our table and never came back! We finally stopped her to ask for the check & asked if we were still getting the side of fruit. Server said 'oh, I figured you didn't want it anymore!' What? I mean WTH? So I said 'I do t understand why your being so bitchy.' Yes I said it because she was just being so nasty to us. She then said - 'oh I'm being bitchy? Well don't ever sit in my section again then!' She dropped the check and walked off again. We talked to Raul who claimed to be the GM who then proceeded to argue with us and said I should have told her I didn't want sugar. Which I did! And told him I have dietary restrictions shouldn't have to tell the server my medical history to get what I'm asking for. If they don't have it then just say so! It would not have been a big deal but they turned into a horrible experience & apparently you get what you get at Black Diner don't ask it to be fixed either cuz they'll cause a scene. Come on in we're open to all. Those smells coming from the kitchen, all are welcome to enjoy the aromas that penetrate deep into your psyche. Who remembers when mama used to cook for the holidays. You would stand next to her and stir something in the bowl. How mama made me feel so important? These days, those large family gatherings are not allowed anymore. It's to keep everyone healthy and safe. Luckily, home cooking and eats still exists. Winter is a beautiful time of year, when we try and celebrate "what" is truly important in life. As I sit here with my fresh coffee, oh so hot. All I can see in the dining room are small parties of folks celebrating their family time. The warmth from this place if I could, I would pass on to make all of humanity feel the comfort level that I have right now. How many fond memories are associated with food? More than I can count. We were seated at a booth by the side of one of the walls. The booths are made of all wood. The hostess had a terrific attitude. While the dining area was very filled, even with the Covid virus, this state is not closed down. They seem to observe the state rules with the virus with the staff wearing masks and gloves. Every other table is occupied to comply with the six feet rules we must follow. At the table here, hot coffee in my hand and cocoa for the twins; we are huddled together basking in the warmth we are creating. The smells, the smells I wish that I could share them with you! We are having chicken and waffles to start with. When the plate arrived in front of us, heaven with a large knife. That chicken on top of those waffles was so delicious. You could cut that chicken, it's so tender with the side of the fork. The waffle was great too. That waffles greatness comes from the chicken. Ready to eat here comes the fork dripping with syrup all over the chicken with some waffle for added texture. The sides that come with the chicken and waffles accompany the dish with added extra flavor. The grits are instant but the added "real" bacon sprinkles on top and cheese is a nice touch. Make sure and get your fruit, it's good for your health. The server offered to add fresh fruit, the strawberries, as a added side for an up charge. Berries have great super powers. Let those berries provide the extra go you need! Just an FYI, if you come at breakfast and want dinner, the menu is available all day long. In fact some of the breakfast specials can be made into breakfast or a dinner plate depending on how and what you want to eat. Let's keep comfort alive with a big delicious cheese burger with all the fixings. We're going in a little deeper, let's try the chicken fried steak too! Come one come hungry. You will leave happy and warm being blessed with the joy of great food and service. You might have to wait a bit but it's worth it. The smells bring you in and tingle the whole old factory senses. Wow....Worst breakfast I have ever had and this after my wife and I had been coming for years. This was my first visit back since the passing of my wife. Greeted and sat quickly as always. The experience ended there I am sorry to say. I ordered steak and eggs with has browns extra crispy. When my meal arrived everything was wrong. My eggs were cold. I got home fries and not hash browns. My steak was medium rare on one end and the other end was raw. Which I showed the waitress and she agreed. I then had to ask for extra butter 2 times before I got it. I am sorry to say I will never be going back. I won't mention the name of the waitress out of respect. Tuesday 3/4/25 we went in at 10:45 we were able to order lunch and ordered a cobb salad and advised waiter we would place 2 to go orders. she said she would get it when she brought our order. 35 min later we ordered the 2go order, waitress keep saying our salad was coming up. 45 min to get our salad and it didn't have bacon or croutons. it was good. we didn't get the to go order until about 12:10. i had to get the manager to get the food. time was ridiculous. waitress was the only one who said sorry. no excuse for the slowness of the kitchen staff. read more

If I could give 0 stars I would. Sat for 10 minutes before server came to ask if we wanted anything to drink . Came back another 10 minutes later with water and took our order. From there it went south fast. 45 minutes later we got our breakfasts . Eggs were like warm and cold some parts. Potatos same , biscuit was hard but but now my diabetes number has dropped to 71 and knew I had to eat. Bacon was good. Husband omelette was the same as my scrambled eggs Luke warm at best and cold in spots. Obvious both plates sat under heat lamp for a while. Never have we had this horrible service of food. Manager was trying to make things right with customers but missed 1 . They say for 15 minutes no water no server it was like they in the abyss, they walked out and let it be known why. Cashier/ host was standing around going in back when customers came up to pay. Server would bring food after clearing table and leaving wet towels on table she was clearing. Makes me wonder how clean her hands were when she brought our Luke warm plates. Even though manager comes our meal trying to make it right. Doesn't forgive lukewarm food or forever wait times. Was here with my husband for breakfast. Note that this is my first time. There was a short wait for about 5 mins then we got seated. Our server was very courteous and made us comfortable. The menu was unique; it's like a newspaper, but it's not. We had two coffee, volcano combo, and Portuguese sausage platter. Volcano combo came with two cakes, bacon, sausage, and one egg. The Portuguese sausage came with hash brown, choice of bread, and eggs. The portion of the food was significant. The taste was average. But the Portuguese sausage was terrific. That was my favorite. Eggs, bacon tasted the usual. Hashbrown was slightly different but had a good flavor to it. Soft, not so crispy! The customer service was on point. Clean spaces and clean restroom. Was a happy experience. The only thing that disappointed was that the plate in which one of the items was served was slightly broken on the edges -- bringing this to the attention of the management! read more

Where to begin; First, I waited to get seated with staff walking by me like I was invisible for atleast 10 minutes. Then, when I was seated my drink order was taken and I was promptly ignored for another 15 minutes. I ordered the small portion tri tip and a bowl of chili. Chili was okay..I didn't get my cornbread but i never saw anyone until i was ready to leave to say anything. Tri tip not horrible but the garlic marinade was overpowering and that's from someone that eats raw garlic. Kind of a dingy flavor, like it had been sitting in marinade for days. The gravy was very bitter, there's two ways that happens; you burn the roux, or it has been cooking on heat so long it breaks down the beef proteins into amino acids. This gravy for sure came from a packet so that pretty much narrows it down. Potatoes were OK. Green beans were the star of this tragicomedy with bacon in them. Upon leaving I was thinking hey, maybe they're a breakfast and dessert specialty place....I'll try a slice and see if that helps. 9 DOLLARS FOR A PIECE OF CARROT CAKE. 9 DOLLARS, AND IT'S AVERAGE. Sad, just sad. Our Black bear diner in our hometown is way better. This one was a total disappointment. I ordered the classic chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and onion rings (ordered extra crispy). The CF steak tasted okay but was cold as were the dry gross old mashed potatoes and not crispy onion rings. Had her nuke my plate because I like my food hot or at least really warm. Four bits into the CFS I was rushing to the ladies room. (This was around 4:00 pm and my first meal of the day and it immediately went right through me. Ugggg not cool. Hubbys food was the meat loaf (asked to grill the meat loaf on both sides) (not grilled) gross mashed potatoes (no baked available) and okay green beans. Meatloaf was absolutely disgusting. It looked like carrot cake and tasted like a vegetarian meatless meatloaf (tons of carrots) so he asked for a steak instead. Sirloin Steak was Luke warm but tasted ok, not great. Had to use lots of A1 to flavor it up. The last order was the BLT with Avocado and that was pretty good but the fries were as cold as the sandwich lol.
