The service I experienced my few visits was spectacular. My daughter wasn't having a good time and the host came by and offered her ice cream on the house. I work at the #1 breakfast restaurant in fresno, and I thought I'd come check out the competition in madera. I gotta say. I'm extremely impressed. The host (isaia) was very helpful with the menu, and checked on me periodically, just as my server (Leticia) did. Another server collected my check and made a quick come to leaving me laughing.... I had the bacon benedict, hashbrowns, and a pancake with a side of fresh fruit. As you can see in the picture I took, it was flawless. Very nice family place. Our food was good diner food, the atmosphere is casual and friendly. The Waitstaff was very nice and attentive - she refilled our drinks frequently - something I always look for. The bear themed decor was also a plus. :) I would like to try their desserts some day but the portion was more than enough, so I had to put that off for another time. read more

We love coming here, everyone is super friendly with our young kids, and our favorite servers (Kim and Kara,) always have a smile on their faces. I am very disappointed with our visit there tonight. Our server was nice however the service was poor. It was close to 45 minutes between ordering our food and actually getting it and not once did our server visit our table to keep us updated. It may have been longer to get our food if I hadn't gone to the front counter to let them know that we were leaving. Pretty sure they were short staffed and that is a sure sign of very poor management. I don't think I be spending anymore of my hard earned money there anymore. read more

Absent of any syrup the pancakes still have a sweet flavor to them that after every bite leaves you wanting more. Absolutely the best pancakes around. They seem to be opening locations everywhere except in the Fresno/Clovis area. Hey Black Bear Diner, hook us up in the Fresno area with a location. I sing the praises of Black Bear Diner to any and every person looking for a good breakfast spot. The cinnamon rolls in the display case are the size of a new born baby. Firstly, disappointed is an understatement. We waited over an hour in an almost empty restaurant just past prime dinner time from point of ordering to being served- so did the table beside us. All the food came our cold at most lukewarm to us. I ordered an open faced turkey sandwich.... The most unappealing meal I have ever been served. I wish I had taken a picture, they put cold untoasted bread on the plate, with slices of Turkey lunch meat, covered in gravy. My husband's food was good, but once again cold. I completely sent back food and asked for a side salad instead because I didn't want to wait another hour for a different plate. To top it off, we were still charged for the plate! I asked to have it taken off before we paid and the floor manager Charity did not even apologize for the quality of service or food, nor did she offer any discounts. I can't say I will ever be back to this location. I used to speak so highly about black bear, sadly not anymore. read more

Decent service but when I reported to the waitress that the food was terrible she asked if I wanted to talk to manager; "ahh...Yes if I need to". I paid my $12 bill and left a tip and left and did not finish my meal. Granted...it was 10pm, in the middle of Madera, CA (remind me never to stop here again), and they were near closing. But to serve cold food; c'mon. The manager offered me a free pie...no thanks...Added to AVOID list. Do not recommend. Sorry Black Bear...this location is lost! The only reason I am going 2-stars instead of 1-star is there are some hard working people here, but the kitchen totally let them down...sad. Terrible food. read more

My family and I usually come for breakfast on weekends since this used to be a good place to eat and have fresh squeezed juice; however, any time we had a Caucasian Server, our experience was bad, I don't understand why they don't like to deal with Hispanics nor big parties. Today was the worst experience in my life!!! Without minimizing the fact that Server left me talking by myself, ignored a party of older Hispanic couple, switched the table disrespectfully with another Server, I would like emphasize on the following: I have asked for a box to go, and I boxed my food and left all of my belongings on the table to go use the bathroom. When I came back, the table was completely clean, so I went and asked for my food and togo coffee. While I was waiting at the register, I saw the busboy talking to the Server Cara, when she DiGGED INTO THE TRASH CAN AND GRABBED MY FOOD AND GAVE IT to the busboy, who came and GAVE IT TO ME!!!!!!! I told him that I had seen what they did and he was speechless, Server Lety witnessed this and tried to help, but this is ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE and I have no words to describe how I felt, and how I feel still. Yes, unbelievable, unbelievable but it did happen and I saw it, and I hope the restaurant has cameras so they can see for themselves. The Best! Stopped in at the Black Bear Diner for breakfast on our way to the coast. Such a comfortable restaurant. I had the hobo omelette with potatoes, biscuits with gravy, toast and coffee. Our convivial waitress, Victoria, was so helpful with suggestions. Any questions we had she was able to answer for us or she would find out the answers and relay them to us. First off we were told there was no wait time, but we still ended up waiting to be seated. Once we got our table it was really sticky including our chairs. We ask one of our servers to re-clean it and she was not happy at all. Our waitress never greeted us or even asked if we were ready to order. We called out someone else to take our order instead. Once we got our drinks the creamer for the coffee was spoiled. We arrived at exactly 1107am and our food got to us at 1148. This place deserves better management, training and customer service oriented staff. It feels like no one now a days appreciate it having a job. We were not greeted by the two employees, one of which was on the phone. We made our way to a table on our own and sat down. Then another customer came in and was shown to a table. I wasn't expecting much but I was sorely disappointed. Simple order steak (rare) and eggs (over medium) and biscuits and gravy, and a side of corn beef hash. The place was busy so I know it would be a minute. When I got my food the hash and burnt not crispy and steak was medium and the eggs were over easy. I got to the bottom of my coffee and it took my entire meal to get a warm up. I powered thru the hash with the gravy from my biscuits and ate about 4 bits of my steak because it was leathery.
