This was a great meal, it was my first time trying a Black Bear Diner. I ordered the specia,l which was Prime Rib Sandwich with Au Ju Dip on the side, I made it a deluxe, which added grilled onions, mushrooms and cheese, with onion rings. I also ordered a side salad on the side. The sandwich was delicious, I didn't even need the dip on the side, our waitress, Kimberly, was amazing and brought me horseradish sauce and mayo on the side. One of the best sandwiches I have had !!! I did take a star away for the salad, it was huge, but it was a majority lettuce. There were maybe 3 tiny tomatoes, 4 halve slices of cucumber and a little pile of shredded carrots, way too much lettuce !!!! My husband ordered the meatloaf with mashed potatoes, brown gravy and broccoli. He really liked it, he ate every bite !!! I would definitely come back and the food was so delicious. read more

My family gathered for brunch after a ceremony on the Warm Springs reservation. Location was right off the main road and parking was easy to find. We had a rather large group but had no issues getting a table after a short wait (less than 30 mins). Although I've seen this chain on multiple occasions, this was my first visit. My only hesitation in the past were mixed reviews, but this location put them all to rest. Our table was served promptly with plates of waffles, desserts, omelets, breakfast burritos, and all the drinks. Everyone raved and humored my request for photos. I used to think this was the best Black Bear of all of thier restaurants. But I just had the worst dinner ever. I ordered steak and fries. Medium rare. I received a over the top well done shoe leather paired with old tough French fries. I know this isn't a steak house but usually their small steak is just right. And it's easy to prepare...right? We stopped by for breakfast on Thanksgiving. The hostess seated us immediately as they weren't yet busy. Everything inside was neat and clean, and with a friendly interaction with the hostess, things seemed on track for a good experience. Unfortunately, our service from that point on wasn't great. Our order was taken fast, but our server wasn't friendly or attentive. He left our ticket with the plates when he dropped them off and never checked in until we were finished. With empty mugs we couldn't even get his attention for a coffee refill...and the other server, whom we were able to eventually flag down, was clearly put off by having to do it. Ultimately we felt somewhat out of place and kind of unwelcome, as most of the tables were obviously regulars (called by name) being well-tended to by all staff with a smile. As for the food, we ordered 2 egg plates. Everything on mine was cooked well, but my husband's potatoes were quite undercooked: most chunks were still hard, the peppers raw, nothing crispy. But, no one checked as we were eating so no remedy there. Not a great meal experience. We pass through the area often, but wouldn't want to return here unfortunately. read more

I'm kind of excited to learn Black Bear Diner is a national chain and that there are a few in Colorado! Had dinner at this one while traveling in Oregon. Madras is such a small town most of the eateries were closed by 8pm! Good thing we found this diner. It's so "late" the clam chowder is more like porridge than soup, lol. But at least they still served warm soup! Salad was still fresh and you could have breakfast items like grits if your heart so desires! Had the salmon and it was served with a lot of vegetables, another plus. The Santa Maria Tri-Tip was as tender as the salmon! The only sad thing is I didn't get dessert here. I could only imagine how decadent the pies would be. More reason to check out a Black Bear Diner here at home!! read more

We stopped at the Black Bear Diner on our way back to our home in E. Oregon. Both times we were there, I ordered the veggie scramble and it was the best scramble that I have ever eaten. We have stopped there before and this time was no exception. I believe in speaking my mind so I asked to speak to the owner. He was busy but he took time so spend a couple of minutes with us. I told him that it was the best breakfast that I had ever had and to keep up the good work and that we plan on stopping there when ever we are in the area. The restaurant is well decorated with a variety of bear features. The service and food were both excellent.

This is hands-down, probably the best blackbear in the whole country. The staff has been serving us for eight years and it's the same folks every single time we go in there and they're all amazing. The ladies in the kitchen have food cooking down to pure science. Love this place and recommend it any day of the week. read more

This restaurant is filthy. Old fake greenery everywhere riddled with dust and cobwebs. Lights are greasy and dirt crusted. Service is subpar as waitstaff is not personable and to overwhelmed with tables to offer reasonable dining experience. As far as food ordered ham breakfast and it was burnt and dry. Hash browns were greasy and swimming in oil. Eggs were cooked perfect! To be fair I have eaten here 3 times and every time is the same. I will not be back. Always a great meal, large portions reasonably priced. When we are in Madras to visit, we always come here for breakfast!

Stopped by for a bite to eat on our way to Washington. Long wait but definitely worth it. We were greeted by a young person whom we later found out was named Jocelyn. She had a friendly welcoming smile and never let our drink become empty. Highly recommend this location if you're passing through Madras Oregon. You won't be disappointed especially if Jocelyn is on shift. read more

We have not had good experiences at Black Bear Diners for a couple of years; but, I had heard good things about this diner. The restaurant was easy to find with entrances and exits to northbound and southbound Highway US-97. Parking was easy with plenty of parking spaces. The main part of the restaurant appeared to be full; but, we were quickly seated in a booth near the front door. It took a few minutes before our iced tea arrived because, as Kady explained, a new batch needed to be brewed. They know how to make excellent iced tea. I have a problem with the Black Bear Diner menu. I usually end up deciding between too many calories and far too many calories. I went with the far too many calories: eggs, spicy sausage patties, and pancakes. My wife was more constrained, BLT with Vegetable Beef Soup. She praised the BLT, especially the crispy bacon. I tasted the soup and kind of wished that I had some for myself. I enjoyed everyone of those far too many calories, especially the sweet cream pancakes. We will be finding our way back to Black Bear Diner - Madras. read more

I don't care for the Black Bear in Madras. 1. Service. They bring water or drinks it's 10 to 15 minutes when they're not busy to come and ask if we want anything. 2. When we order salads, they don't give us our salads until right before we have our dinner so we have both the same time even though we ask for the salads before dinner. 3. They forget half of my order not my husband and my order is always cold. It's the. wrong order 4. On my order, don't get there. Tell my Husband's order is already done. 5. I don't say too much about it because I don't like sending things back by. They tell the waitress and they look at me like oh you're just complaining and I'm nice about it. I don't go to the supervisors. I don't go to their boss. I just tell them. it's just not fair. This happened every time I go in with my husband we used to go in with some friends too and it happens then I'm the only one that happens to and what's weird is on the One usually gives the tip and if it's just two of us , I give 20% of the bill or more. The bill is $15 at least give them five dollar tip.. so it's not like giving them a the tip and I always give them cash usually. Weather been back in the last three months and we won't be back in . Our friends like black bear so it's up to you if you like him, but this happens when we go to California too food is always cold that a lot of people like them and I feel bad putting this on their side, but it's my opinion and only my opinion. read more

If you're going to eat here, I suggest you don't come for diner the staff working tonight don't seem to give a rip about customer service they are far more interested in chatting and goofing off, No one acknowledged us at the door and then took our order brought our food and never came back. we normally stop here for Breakfast when we pass thru and never have had an issue, But the last few times we have stopped for Dinner and the service has been terrible. Black Bear diners are a chain similar to Sharis and Dennys. I frequent all three from time to time unless there is a small, local "greasy spoon" clubcar-type diner in the area for breakfast. I do prefer to patronize small local businesses if one is available and has good Yelp reviews. I have never had a bad meal at any Black Bear diner and this franchise was no different. I was just passing through and had to speak at a group function later that morning. Needed a filling breakfast and knew I could count on Black Bear to provide that. They got me seated quickly, took my order quickly, the food and the bill showed up quickly. Wait staff was fine. Plenty of coffee and a filling breakfast, Just as expected. Not the least expensive option but good value for the $$$ and I didn't leave hungry which was the object of the exercise. Not likely that I will be back in Madras any time soon but here's another notch for one more five star Black Bear diner experience. read more

I am only giving 1 star because our server was dirty and did not smell good at all! I think if you are going to work in the food industry you should be required to be clean with good hygiene. I don't care how nice and clean the place is if you have someone that is not clean you don't trust how your food is being prepared. whomever is in charge should make sure that the employees are coming to work bathed with clean uniforms! Good brake fast I think this is only the second one I've visited recently. They apparently now have 143 locations across 14 states. The atmosphere is always good. Good music is always playing on speakers. Good orange juice and good coffee. Friendly service. read more

Had a really great experience here on a Friday afternoon. We were sat quickly and the owner himself served us. The food was fresh and very tasty, the 4 in our party all loved our meals. I had the homemade chili which had a little kick to it, and was filling. Also had the tri tip sandwich with the au jus, and everything, from the bread to the meat, to the au jus was so tasty. Also they serve fresh squeezed orange juice that is perfect with any meal. The sweet potato fries and homemade ranch was also so good. Very cozy atmosphere. Outstanding experience at Black Bear Diner. Visiting from out of state. Super busy on a Sunday morning before church. Joel was our server and took good care of us. He is friendly and courteous, with lots of smiles. We are vegan so we had the oatmeal and it was delicious! Served with cinnamon, craisins, and nuts, and brown sugar, with a side slice of orange. I wasn't sure if I wanted to try this place looking at how many stars they had but after reading some of the reviews and seeing low ones for something petty that had nothing to do with service or food, we decided to give it a try. Considering how busy it was, we were seated right away and we got our coffees ans hot chocolates pretty quick. The service was top notch. Food was great but it is at a cost considering it is breakfast. Not sure if 2 pumpkin spice pancakes were worth $10. I think my husband's French toast with blackberries inside was around $14? Breakfast for 4 cost a whopping $60. Was it a great breakfast, yes. Was it worth paying that much, not so much as some of our dinners were that price but glad we did this once. read more

This was a fantastic spot for breakfast!! My family was passing through on vacation, my wife and I had the steak and eggs, and the portions were very large and filling. My daughter had the biscuits and gravy. Everything was awesome! I only wish they had locations out here in Alabama we could visit. I ordered the Denver omelet this morning. It was seriously more like an egg scramble. According to the menu it was a three egg omelet but I don't think it was more than a single egg, a matching amount of cheese and way too many onions. The ham was awfully scarce. It's clear that they don't know how to make omelets. The "fresh" biscuit was anything but. It had to have been at least several days old. I gave them one star because the coffee was good. I got the two eggs breakfast combo with hash browns and it was great. My boyfriend got the eggs Benedict and it was good, although one of the eggs was a little over cooked. Exceptional Experience - this restaurant checks every single box Spotlessly clean, beautifully appointed (for a diner/breakfast restaurant) and good food with great service The attention to detail for this Black Bear begins the moment you walk along the adjacent sidewalk to the front door. The amount of effort energy and money spent on the exterior landscaping and carved bears outside is evident. The 1953 Chevy pick up truck parked outside is a very nice touch. And honestly, the truck caused me to initiate a u-turn around the block and stop in. The attention to detail throughout the restaurant, from the moment the hostess greets you - all the way through your meal is much more than you could ask for - when seeking a quick breakfast. I'm not sure where some of the occasional "reviewer hate" is coming from... but I'd suggest they might want to recalibrate their expectations. How much more could you possibly expect, or deserve, from a simple, clean, dining establishment (with terrific food) located in Madras Oregon? An "easy" five star review... a delightful and surprising experience! What I learned: Black Bear restaurants are owned by franchisee's... subsequently, the consistency throughout the restaurant chain is absent. THIS LOCATION SHOULD BE THE "STANDARD" for other BB's to be judged by.
