This place is great! We were visiting family in Manteca and ate here for breakfast our first day there. It was so good that we ate here 2 more times during our one week visit. The corned beef hash was insane. The service was good. Not outstanding but not terrible either. My water was kept full and we didn't have to wait long for our food, which is good enough for me. The portion are huge, the food is mostly a notch above Denny's or AppleBees, let's face it, you're not going there expecting Anthony Bordains apprentice working his sorcery in the kitchen. I'm not a fan of the burger buns because they never toast them, they are soft fresh and doughy just like right out of the package. I'd give them another star if they just fixed that one thing. I do love the Eggs Benedict, pretty much any style the do it in now. They offer real butter for the good pancakes and ( healthier than hydrogenated margarines and "I can believe it's not butter") real maple syrup. And the Fried chicken, even for breakfast sometime is a wonderful crispy golden brown. If your not happy with wilty soft soggy bacon or burnt omelets, send it back, they can reverse the order of it. They are capable of making good crispy bacon after all. All in all a solid Sunday experience. read more

It's hard to mess up a breakfast but messed up it is I don't know what's happened to Black Bear Diner, but everything now is just way below quality of what it was when they first opened. Breakfast earlier this morning the bacon was limp and Soggy the potatoes were probably the only thing that was good I ordered my eggs over medium and they were runny, the toast was burnt . I enjoy their food but the desserts are strange. The cobblers have no taste and the banana cream pie is awful. Mostly whipped cream and something that tastes like banana cream. The graham cracker crust is terrible if you can call it a crust. We took one taste of the cobblers and the rest went down the disposal. Black bear diner needs to get thier shit together. They sat us down and gave us our drinks and forgot about us for over an hour. They started giving people that came after us thier food first while we sat there waiting for ours to come. Yet it never did. Agter they severd 5 people that came in AFTER us we decided to leave. We felt very discriminated again. I will never return to black bear diner ever again unless i want shitty service. And i told the manager and he did not fix nothing. We had a few individuals who have specific diets. The server was rude and seemed irritated. Not to mention there was a dead fly in one of the salads (underneath) So it was freaky to eating and see a bug. Half our group decided to remove their order. We got a poor apology from the waitress. But the manager seemed to really be apologetic. Yet she stated she wanted the waitress to apologize to our guest whom had the fly. ... and she never gave a sincere apology. On check out.... the manager asked if the waitress did as she asked. I said no. She pulled the girl up and although I was quite neutral the waitress wanted to argue the stand point. There aren't many food options in Manteca so I ended up here both Friday night before Yosemite and Sunday night after. Everyone raves about the huge portions but I'd say the main entree is a decently large portion but they mostly just give you a ton of fries/chips and serve it on a huge plate which makes people think it's "huge." The food is homey American comfort food, some of which is very good but some of which is executed in a homey middle America kind of way. The parmesan sourdough cheeseburger was very interesting because the hamburger patty was served on sliced bread - to my surprise the bread withstood the juice of the patty and the flavors were good so I thoroughly enjoyed it. Plus the homemade parmesan kettle chips were incredibly tasty and were my favorite part of the meal! In fact they were so addictive on my return trip I got chicken tenders and subbed the chips for the fries. The chicken tenders were pretty good - juicy chicken, crispy batter, though the batter was on the dense side. I also tried the fries, which were bad (not crispy during both trips). The side salad was iceberg lettuce with a little bit of shredded purple cabbage and carrot, grape tomatoes, and dry cucumbers (also dry on both visits). Then there was the thinly cut rib eye steak - medium rare by request, medium well in reality. Of course the disappointment was deserved because one should know better than to order a steak from a Denny's style restaurant... But the worst food was the side of "seasonal vegetables," which was actually reheated frozen veggies (squash, carrots, broccoli), recognizable by the mushy watery texture. What an embarrassment. Bottom line: Stick with a burger and parmesan kettle chips and you'll be satisfied. Don't bother trying to get fancy or be healthy by ordering vegetables. read more

Sooo I've pretty much had good experiences with BBDs and we walked into this one thinking to get about the same. I guess we were wrong.. So I pretty much always order prime rib whenever going to BBD. But this time I thought I'd go with a rib eye medium rare and my friend ordered T-bone medium well.......soooo why did I get my rib eye cut into 2 pieces and so very well done to the point it was blackened?? My friend's T-bone was well over-done, too, but mine was beyond over-done. I guess I spoke out loud when I thought, "why the hell is my steak black and in 2 pieces," when the waiter responded saying he'd take it back to the kitchen for a new one..uhhhh yea buddy, who would serve that steak out to anyone anyway?! I received a slightly bigger rib-eye, medium-well, but that's okay. It was still pink in the epicenter and I figure we gotta choose our battles. Went there last night we saw a lot of cars we expected it to be busy. We went in for seated and got our drinks first. The waitress didn't come to our table til 25 mins later to take our order. We ordered I kid you not we waited an hour to get our food. By that time the rush has died down. We asked our waitress wow busy huh and she didn't even apologize just made up excuses. She gave us nothing but attitude. Came here to have a nice breakfast. I ordered the bacon, eggs, hash browns, and sour dough toast with Iced Tea, no lemon, with the long ice teaspoon. Got a look from my waitress like I was from Mars or another country. So, I explained what an ice tea teaspoon looks like, still a blank stare, in one ear and out the other. She comes back after 10 minutes with my Iced Tea and no spoon. She says that there is a spoon included with my fork and knife rolled up in my napkin. I told her I knew that, but that spoon wouldn't work for stirring my iced tea. Still, she insists that my spoon should be be just fine. So, I put that spoon in my glass of iced tea, then say to her, now get that spoon out of the glass without getting your fingers wet. I guess the light bulb clicked on, she says OH I SEE. Off she goes and comes back with the longer iced tea teaspoon, over 5 minutes wasted over a damn spoon. Why can't young kids who work as a waitress just slow down and LISTEN to what your customer orders. Breakfast shows up 25 minutes later, everything looks good on the surface. My sourdough toast has been buttered with garlic butter and really undercooked bacon. 15 minutes go by before my waitress shows her face to ask how is my meal. I tell her my concerns and back goes the meal to be re-done. 20 minutes go by still no meal, at this point I ask for it to placed into a TO GO container to take home. Another 15 minutes go by and it's ready to go. I go to pay my bill and ask to speak to the manager on duty, they say she's on a break and would be back in 25 minutes , would I like to wait ?? WAIT , are you kidding me ?? To top that off my waitress comes out to me in the parking lot and wants to know why I shorted her on a tip, I said, what are you talking about, she says you only left me a $2 tip on a $12.45 bill with tax. I told her she's lucky she even got a tip. She says she's going to get the manager, I say good luck with that cause she's on a break for another 25 minutes. This is by far the worst service, meal, and all out rudeness on a whole mother level I've never experienced in my entire 61 years of life. I think I will be eating else where from now on. read more

Went here for my mothers B-Day diner. The wait was short but service and food were horrible. Their was a total of 7 Adults 2 toddlers, but BBD servers split our table which screwed up the meals. Two meals in total didn't show up when the other food came out. We notified our server and wasn't to concerned until 15 minutes later my meal never came and everyone was almost finished. I think the BBD staff realized they messed up because both servers stop coming to our tables we sat without drinks for over 20 minutes. It wasn't till we we're able to get a "Managers" attention when he apologized and started getting us waters etc. my food was so late they undercooked the veggies, eggs were runny, and biscuits were cold. Sourdough bread was questionable, swiss cheese was halfway melted (by lukewarm chicken?), and avocado was unripened and hard. The bacon was decent (luckily) so I just picked that out and ate it. This was our first time here and will be our last time. After we parked our car in the parking lot, we got out and were met with a horrible smell coming from the trash containers that was on the side of the building, next to the entrance of the restaurant. The containers were behind chain linked fences. They should have been inside an enclosed solid wall with solid doors to block some of the smell and visual distractions. Also, there was a guy (we assumed he was the employee there) smoking next to the trash. We had planned to go to Applebee's to celebrate our 2 preteen boys' academic achievements, but one of them requested to eat here since we've never been to Black Bear. We shrugged off the smell and quickly made our way inside the restaurant. I'll skip the details of the interior as it is the usual run-of-the-mill chained-owned decor. The food, however, was not great. One of my son ordered a chicken burger but got a cheese burger instead. We didn't want to make a fuss about it so we didn't change it. His chocolate milk was horrible. He let me tried it and I thought it was watered down chocolate milk. There was hardly any chocolate flavor. It was just regular milk and they squeezed chocolate syrup in it but didn't do enough. We changed that to a soda and the waitress didn't bring it out until we had almost finish our meal. I had a New York steak and asked to have it med-rare but what I got was med-well. It was tough and chewy and there was a burnt smoke taste to it. They didn't seasoned it well either. This is low grade beef like the ones they sell at Food-4-Less. I don't expect Prime or even Choice grade, but this is the worst I've ever tasted in a steak. I've had many at Applebees and, although they are not that great either, they are better than this. My wife had prime-ribs and she didn't care much for it either. My other son's Fish-N-Chips was like it came from the grocery stores' freezer section. The service was ok, not friendly but not rude either.....comparable to Applebees'.
