We go to Black Bear Diner frequently (kids want breakfast for dinner). I decided to get breakfast yesterday for the six of us. Six people! The main issues were with two orders. My dad got his staple Ham and Cheese Omelette with hash browns (which were cold and raw) and I decided to change mine up a bit and ordered a sweet cream waffle with Blackberries. I would say 30/45 mins after eating, both my father and I were having major stomach issues. Multiple trips to the bathroom. I'll stop there, you don't need to know the rest. I called Black Bear Diner just to inform them and the Manager said (rudely) that she finds it highly unlikely that we got food poisoning from them because food poisoning doesn't happen until after 12 hours. I wasn't in the mood to correct her, plus, she was gracious enough to give us two free meals but I'm a little iffy about that because she only asked for some personal information and didn't send me anything (email) to suggest I will get two free meals. I even suggested if I could have my daughter swing by to get a certificate. The Manager said (annoyed) "no that isn't needed". What if we order from them in a months time, how do I know that I will get my two free meals. Customer Service has been going downhill for the past few visits and I get that they are super busy with phone orders and dining at the restaurant, but things just don't seem to run as smoothly and the disrespect of the waiter literally pushed me aside while I was walking in yesterday was disturbing. We've eaten here in person a couple of times with no issues, but our recent takeout delivery was a total fail! What we ordered- -Minestrone Soup-had obviously been really scorched in the pot and has terrible taste. Inedible. -Meatloaf-hubby said was fine - Chili with cheese and onion-no cheese, no onion -Chocolate Cream Pie to share- had gone bad!! Was so sour we had to throw that out too. Horrible first time experience! So not only was I served my meal almost 5 minutes after the rest of my party, but I was served these extremely burnt sausage patties. We asked for more, waited around 10 minutes and my party is finished with their meals and I still didn't have new sausage. As soon as the sausage arrived, my party was ready to go, so I unfortunately didn't get to eat. I'm extremely dissatisfied, the new sausage is still slightly burnt. This Black Bear Diner in Manteca, off of Yosemite, was absolutely the best! My husband had Scrambled eggs, Apple Chicken Sausage, Red Country Potatoes and French Toast while I enjoyed a very Juicy, tender, well done New York Steak with Mashed Potatoes and Gravy, with Coleslaw and a side salad. We both shared a Banana Cream Pie and a glass of milk! My New York Steak was cooked well done by Chef Quirino. It was the best tasting well done New York Steak I have ever had! It was so juicy and tender, easy to cut and pleasing to my taste buds! Thank you Chef, Quirino! The service of our waiter, Ulises, was also very wonderful! Ulises had other tables he was waiting on besides ours yet he made it a point to make sure that none of his tables waited for anything! He was constantly checking in with his tables and always making sure to have eye contact with his customers! Fernando, the Assistant manager was also very accommodating and professional as seemed to be the whole team! We stopped in on our way to Nevada around noon for some late breakfast. No wait time, seated right away. This black bear is very spacious and clean. The service was outstanding, very attentive and super nice attitude. Two of us ordered the chicken fried steak, I had a side of hash browns and eggs overeasy. The meal came with a huge homemade biscuit as well. The coffee is decent, but they have vanilla creamer to add some good flavor to it. The chicken fried steak was perfect, very large slab of meat, tender and awesome gravy over top. The eggs were cooked perfectly but the hash browns and biscuits were ice cold. My daughter ordered a ham and cheese omelette with potatoes and a pancake on the side.. she was a huge fan of all but the potatoes. My wife liked the French toast, big portions for her, she couldn't finish. Overall it was okay, if the potatoes were not cold I would of given a fourth star. read more

All the hot dishes were served on the hot plates which made food tasted even better. We came for breakfast and were very pleased with the food and service. Black Bear Diner Located on E Yosemite in Manteca, California. So this evening, I got invited to eat dinner with my cousin and his son. He told me, "I get a new place to Yelp". So we ventured to Manteca, California to try out Black Bear Diner. As soon as we walked in we got seated in an instant. I was just admiring the place. Our servers name is Savannah. She's pretty good, kept asking us if we needed anything and giving us refills without out even asking. What caught my attention is her smile towards our party of three. There was another server in the area that kept smiling our way too. All smiles and I love it, that's what I'm talking about. My cousin ordered the $9.99 Hot Turkey sandwich, I ordered the $9.99 Crispy chicken flatbread and his son ordered the $9.99 Western Bbq burger. We each ordered a soda which are $2.59 each. The portions were very chubby for all our meals. My crispy chicken flatbread was very good. The garlic fries were off the hook. My cousin picked at them a few times to try them. Just the right amount of garlic on them. I can't have my breath kicking to much. My cousins Hot Turkey Sandwich looked like a Thanksgiving feast. He enjoyed it as well. His son had the Western BBQ Burger with regular fries and he loved his food too. All three of us had a great time here and for people like us. We enjoy good food and good company. I love talking over a good meal and making a beautiful memory. It's how I roll :) So I'll break it down like this: Two stars for our server Savannah who I really like and hopefully, I'll get her again on my next visit. Black Bear Diners My review of the Black Bear Diners I've been to so far. In chronological order. All the the Black Bear Diners I've been to were clean and pleasant (exception noted for the women's restroom at the Manteca location). The wait staff was universally pleasant, friendly, and competent. Breakfast - Tracy Corned beef hash - Excellent, it's actually rare to find a restaurant that does corned beef hash at all, and even rarer to find one that doesn't get it from a can. If you like corned beef hash, order this. Very heavy on the corned beef and light on the potatoes. Which is ok with me, it's good corned beef. Eggs - ordered over easy, cooked perfectly Hash browns - they are trying too hard to be different from other restaurants. They came out as long strings of potato that were barely cooked and a bit greasy. They should just stick with normal hash brown potatoes Biscuit - I come from a family of biscuit makers. There are two things I never expect a restaurant to meet my standards; biscuits and cornbread. It was OK, about what I've come to expect from a restaurant. Lunch - Modesto Hamburger, fries, and salad, all good and prepared properly. Dinner - Modesto Meatloaf- a disaster. I will never order it again. Over processed and bland. Mashed potatoes and gravy - better than I expected for a restaurant. As simple as mashed potatoes and gravy should be, it's amazing how few restaurants come up to the 'better than expected' level. Breakfast - Modesto Ham, cheese, and mushroom omelette - very good, one of the best I've had from a restaurant that did not specialize in omelettes Country potatoes - Well cooked and very good Bacon - Bacon is always good no matter how its served English muffin - It was toasted, buttered, and served still hot. The theme of the restaurant was unique, the menu is a newspaper which is pretty cool. The food was A+. I had the slow cooked pot roast and it was way better than I was expecting. Showed up to order food and to eat in their rented area. It was slightly busy, but not to bad. Myself and 2 of my friends sat down and placed our orders and we received our drinks. At this point, things were going well, till this occurred. So, 2 other tables were seated after us, their orders not even taken...however, some how both of the tables, one a party of 2, the other a party of 3 both got their food before us. 35 minutes pass, and we aren't even checked on for refills. Finally, an hour later, someone comes and ask us if we would like refills. At this point, I'm a little upset, so I ask to speak to the manager. 10 minutes later, our food comes out, and it's not fully cooked. I flagged down the waiter, and I tell him this isn't acceptable. Now, I'm an understanding guy, and I ask the waiter to be honest and tell us if he has forgot to put our orders in and just rushed to get something out to us. He said that the order got mixed up in shift change...the only issue with that excuse is that he was our waiter the ENTIRE time, and to add to that, if he would have came back to our table within the hour of us being there, he would have known. The truth is, he had forgot to put in our order till I asked to speak to a manager...which to add to that, it took for my friend to get up to go in for the manager to even know we wanted to speak to her. As a military veteran, integrity is everything to me. I gave him the option to just be honest and admit fault, I would have been fine if he just admitted the mistake, it was when he failed to be able to do that, that I got upset(never cursed or raised my voice at anyone during this entire ordeal, but I was angry) but he couldn't do that. Couldn't even get the manager when requested. The only reason I'm even giving it 1 star instead of none is because the manager gave me a gift card to use at any other black bear. Food is average. Definitely overpriced for average food. I remember the portion sizes being really large at other Black Bear Diners, but they didn't seem unusually large to me this time. My omelette may have been worth the price. Was able to customize it the way I wanted and it came with a huge, fluffy biscuit and some rather sad fruit. My husband was not pleased at all with his breakfast. So unremarkable that I can't remember what it was. I gave him quite a bit of mine to cheer him up. Son had the kid's combo (eggs, bacon, toast etc). Pricing was ok there. We wish we hadn't ordered a normal pancake for my daughter. $4 for just one pancake. Would have been better to pay a little bit more for a kid's meal. I know she wouldn't have finished it anyway, but still.... Even with all the misses and the pricing, would still have given this three stars. But the service was super slow. Not blaming the waiters. I don't think there were enough waiters to go around. We waited forever to get any refills on our coffee. And we need our coffee in the morning, particularly when we are road tripping. read more

Stopped by this location on the way to Yosemite. I have been to numerous black bear diner locations and seem to be disappointed as of late. What was the problem with this location? The pancakes. What happened to those fluffy, delicious, humongous, sweet cream pancakes? They were incredibly small, flavorless, and overcooked. Pancakes used to be my go to at every location but they seem to be losing it a bit. There was no wait time here. Service was ok and coffee was filled without having to ask one. Having never eaten at this chain I wasn't sure what to expect. This was a pretty large restaurant with lots of seating. As you would expect there are all types of bear decorations throughout the dining room. My server was Yvonne, who was very helpful and quite knowledgeable about the menu. I had the daily special, which was a 10oz prime rib with mashed potatoes and mixed veggies. The meal also included soup or salad. I had the salad, which was fresh and cold. The Prime Rib, although nothing to write home about, was never the less prepared to my liking, (medium rare), and quite tender. The potatoes were good, but it was the veggies that cost them a star. The absolute worst! Three of us for breakfast. Sat in the back corner, and were there for 15 minutes-absoluyely no one came to take a drink order or even acknowledge us. 3 different serves came back and forth to the table next to us and still nothing, even while looking right at us! We love this diner. Always perfect food and great service. The waitresses work their butts off bringing food and drinks and condiments outside in the heat into the parking lot so we can still enjoy a yummee breakfast or other time of day meal. They have done a good job moving the restaurant in to the parking lot since we are being forced to breathe in all the dangerous smoke, which is more dangerous than catching Covid!!! Great service and awesome food. Black Bear never disappoints, huge portions of comfort food and a very reasonable price. I've tried so many dishes from their fantastic sandwiches to the full entrées. The chicken fried steak tastes homemade, the breakfasts are all good. My favorite burger is the "Bob's Big Bear Burger", nothing fancy just a burger done right. Quality meat and produce are used to create this simplistic master piece. If I could give zero stars, I would. Absolute worst service I have EVER experienced in my life. It took just shy of 2 hours to eat and get out of the place. Three separate times our server told us they were in the process of making our food. Our order consisted of * cheeseburger Salad * omelet * country fried steak * cheeseburger This took 90 minutes to fire and serve?!?! And even once the food came out- the burger and fries trickled in one by one after everything else. I asked to speak to the manager...that didn't happen. I was repeatedly told they were super busy, yet looking around I saw a large amount of open tables/booths. We were about to just get up and leave when finally after an hour and half our food arrived. It was awful. We didn't finish it because it looked like it had been cooked and recooked a few times.
