Great food and service! Family oriented restaurant. definitely recommend the biscuits and gravy!

I've never written a review before especially on yelp but this place is absolutely horrible. My daughter ordered pancakes once and I think hot sauce was mixed in the mix and she complained that her pancakes were spicy. And then another time when I was there I ordered garlic fries and my fries tasted like raw fish and I got soo sick it was so disgusting. My most recent visit came out to $60 and my steak was raw on the inside and burned on the outside at the same time my bacon was burnt and hard and my daughters pancakes were burnt black and the staff acted as if the pancakes were normal. We all received our plates except for my daughter whose pancakes took so long we were all done eating and still waiting for her food to come out and when it did it was burnt. read more

Been here two times and both times it was a pretty good experience. Service was good and food was good.

Three of us ate here on Saturday. Overall the food was very good and plentiful. The service was superb. Could not ask for any better. My only issue was the sandwich called a tri-tip, really did not seem like it. It tasted more like sliced beef. Nothing too special. read more

I lovvve The hungry man breakfast! I swear I lovvve this place when I'm super starving and wana stuff my face! They have such big portions! My order can usually feed me and two small child, I lovvve their pancakes yummm there sOoo good and fluffy! The country potatoes are very flavorful and good. Do not go here! Have been here for two hours and still do not have our Mother's Day breakfast! Door Dash would have been faster. The server keeps telling us any minute for over 45 minutes! Came in today after rush hr was over most the employees was just chilling . The place was empty except us an another family at the table. We got seated took the waitress 20 min to get our order in than another 40 to get our food. I got a bob burger deluxe my bun was burnt and the patty was half the size of the bun. They also forgot the deluxe part of my order which is bacon and cheese. I gave lunch and dinner a second chance and I won't be coming back during these hrs. Of all the Black Bear Diners we have eaten at, this WAS always the best one. In the last 6 months, the service and the quality of the food has really diminished. I ordered the pork chops and was unable to eat them since they were VERY tough on the outside and not cooked on the inside. It seems as though each time we have gone in lately, it has been understaffed, the tables are dirty, and I even saw a broom & dust pan just laying on the floor. My family & I likes to travel around the U.S. & I have to say this diner we stumbled upon in small town Merced is one of the BEST diners I ever tried. Especially the best in the California State!!! I ordered the prime rib. My husband order the steak & shrimp, while my son ordered the burger special. All 3 dishes come out at good timing & they all tasted nicely. But what I really like is the size of your steaks & burgers; they are GIGANTIC!!! Definitely a match to your restaurant's name of: "Bear", "bear size" hahaha. & they are ALL delicious!!! You guys should be categorize more of a steakhouse than diner, because these is what a "real steakhouse" supposed to be!!! I'm from the SoCal area & in my place in SoCal, we were having a hard time finding good diners & steakhouse. Originally, I thought the California State does not have good diner/steakhouses compared to other states. But after stumbling upon this restaurant, I'd say: Your excellent restaurant service & foods represents the pride of California!!! Usually great food & service. Tonight was an exception. I ordered the new loaded mac & cheese. The portion was large. However, the only thing warm was the plate itself. The cheese was processed like Velveeta, which may have tasted ok, had it been hot. Very disappointed. read more

Our server was Tad and he was one of my top 10 servers of all time. Even though the place was packed, my husband and I felt like the only ones in the place. Tad let us know that the kitchen was running a little behind but he still felt we would not have a long wait for our lunch. Food was terrible, Waffle and chicken with eggs were horrible. Scramble eggs were not fully cooked and had brown stuff on it as it was cooked on a dirty grill, ordered open face turkey sandwich with gravy and mashed potatoes and the appearance looked like it was chopped up for a senior citizen mashed potatoes were lumpy. Waitress brought us coffee with no utensils, got up and asked and still didn't get them so I had to use a straw. Over all it was horrible and paid over sixty dollars for the meal. read more

On a vacation from NJ. Passing through Merced around 8pm. We were looking for a diner to grab a decent bit to eat. Place was packed. Got a breakfast special and a broccoli stuffed chicken dinner. Great diner food. Great (fast) service. Food came quick (less than 10 minutes). Messed up on putting my sauce on the side an immediately offered to replace the dish free of charge. Having a few years of restaurant experience behind me, I like to see how the place looks, whether the tables are left unattended, how the staff is, etc. I must say this place really impressed me. We had a group of 6 and our wait wasn't more than 10 minutes. We got a table and we were greeted by our server. She was extremely nice and very attentive. We had questions regarding certain items on the menu and she didn't mind giving us a breakdown. Food was here fast and was served in huge portions. This place is Wonderful! The food is all tasty and served Hot! At first, it seemed a bit pricey, but when my order came, it was Huge. Took home enough for another day! The place is very comfy. The decor was very cute, with funny bear photos and bear curtains, wooden baby bears in swings up high. The staff is great! Favorite go to breakfast place! The plates are hearty, they will fill you up! I had the French roast and a side of red potatoes. My waitress Stephanie G was very polite and courteous the entire time and made our experience here even more worthwhile! She made sure we had refills on our coffee and water and made sure our food was brought to us quickly. She constantly checked on us to make sure we had everything we needed. Sort of a Dennys type atmosphere. Bathrooms were very dirty. Service was ok nothing to brag about though. Food arrived in a timely manner and the portions were huge.
