The service here was horrible. We waited 30+ mins for our food. Keep in mind it wasn't that busy. A couple who was seated maybe 10-15 mins after us received their food at the same time as us. Used to be great. I've come here a lot. Enjoyed it a lot...in the past. I stopped eating here for about a year, up until recently because i found a dust ball attached to the bottom of my sandwich. Never complained; just stopped eating here. I decided to start giving the place a shot again recently and my experience has been...bad. So today was the last time unfortunately. I ordered a chicken avocado club sandwich, like always, for carry out. Got the sandwich, brought it home and when I opened the box, i was shocked to see the avocado in my sandwich was just covered in mold. How the HELL are your cooks ok with serving this?? This is our second time going to dinner there for a holiday, the first was St Patrick's Day and this time was for Easter. I got the special ham dinner and it was NOT explained that it would be covered with a pineapple/applesauce thing. Nor was it explained that the green bean side dish came with bacon. Not that I DON'T like pineapple or bacon but neither was what I was expecting and I really wanted to have cranberry sauce with the ham but it was covered in this pineapple stuff. I thought of my poor friend who is deathly allergic to pineapple and what would have happened if, like with us, they didn't explain the special a little better, like I heard a different server next to us doing for a different table. My son got the Orange Cream Supreme shake and it was not even close to the picture... which leads you believe it's like orange sherbet and ice cream but what we got was more like orange JUICE and ice cream. For the corned beef dinner special a few weeks ago, it was most cabbage with maybe two or three HALVES of small potatoes... Nothing was fantastic, despite the lack of complete descriptions or mistaken expectations, so I won't be going back. read more

I bought the pork ribs and within an hour and half I started burping a lot the ribs....not so long after I threw up 4 times. Then 6 more times and I had diarrhea all night....have not been able to eat anything til almost 24 hours later thanks to this restaurant. I will never eat here again!!! This was my first time at a Black Bear Diner. Service is friendly and capable. We came in with a party of 12, and though it did take 40 minutes to seat us, our orders were taken and food served with relative promptness. Portions are huge. I got the Small Volcano. I think I was served the regular Volcano on accident because it was pretty large: 3 hotcakes, 2 eggs, and 2 bacon and 2 sausage links. The food was just bland. Gigantore portions but nothing remarkable. Lots of choice on the menu but nothing remarkable. Someone in our party mentioned their burger was undercooked. Merced has a limited number of restaurants, but because it's so crowded and the food is pretty mediocre, I'm not sure I will be rushing back. read more

I don't personally go here to eat, I order to go or from Doordash. I like that they have a variety to choose from including healthy food or smaller dishes that you don't have to pay a grip for. This place is a really cute restaurant, I order the fried chicken with mash potato, they forgot the gravy, the chicken was over cooked, almost burnt, not juicy. the fry chicken taste like frozen chicken, I love their ranch dressing with bacon, my daughter order fish sticks and fries, the fries were greasy and cold, the fries needed salt, the french dip sandwich only had a few pieces of meat, the bread was ok, nothing special the corn muffins look and taste like the ones u bake at home, if u do go to this place make sure u lock your car doors, also watch out for shady people, a man walk up to me in the parking lot and ask me if I could give him money, another toothless guy who looked crazy and smell like urine ask me if I could give him a ride, he kept saying he was Jesus, be careful, the staff were nice and helpful. read more

We were searching for restaurants in the area and this was the only one that closed at 10pm. It only gave us about 45 minutes to eat but we were satisfied with this choice. The waitress was quick and efficient with taking our orders so our food came out within 10 minutes. One peach cobbler a la mode, a blt sandwich and fish tacos. Peach cobbler was more like peach pie, no cobbler topping but it was decent. Blt was mehh, nothing special. Fish tacos were good, fish was fried well and it came with refried beans, coleslaw, pico de gallo and sour cream. The coleslaw had way too much vinegar but it ended up being the best out of all three items, Iwould give it a 6 out of 10. We were done eating within 40 minutes, I've had better diner food so I won't be returning. read more

Love the food. The 3 stars is for the food. However, I brought my little brother & sisters out to dinner here one night & there were two girls at the front desk that pissed me off. (Excuse my language) We walked in and they looked straight at us yet did not greet us. One of the girls looked at us and left and the other stood there looking at her computer for 5 minutes until she would even look up at us. Talk about awkward. I felt completely disrespected. Those two girls need an attitude check and a job that doesn't require them to deal with people; their social skills suck. However, our server was great! I had been to the black bear in Vacaville and I was impressed, so while I was passing by Merced on the 99, I thought check out their new location. It definitely lived up to it's reputation! I ordered the bacon wrapped chicken and it was amazing! It is stuffed with broccoli, cheese and cream of mushroom and topped with a broccoli hollandaise. I really enjoyed it! But, more importantly (for me), the service was flawless. From the second I walked in I was met with smiles and cheery employees. We were asked a few times how we were doing during our meal and enjoyed a yummy blackberry cobbler to top it off! Definitely recommend the new black bear!! read more

I've been to BBD a few times and I've always sworn it to be my last. The hamburger only tastes like the condiments applied to the bun. The meat has no flavor. The prices are outrageous! For the same lousy burger price you can go to the Branding Iron down the street and get a Huge, delicious gourmet burger. One time I ordered a tuna sandwich for about $10. This black bear diner is located in an old Marie calenders building. It is fairly newly renovated to fit the black bear diner theme. The atmosphere and actual restaurant are very nice. It's been clean every time I've gone in. The food is always fairly fast to come out even when they are busy. The portions are HUGE! The taste and flavor to me is just OK. The kids meals are awesome because they come with desert and the water actually brings the cart to them and let's them chose what toppings they want on their ice cream. It's like a Dennys but with better faster service. The price is very similar to Dennys, this is a restaurant I only go to if someone else in my party choses it. I just want to emphasize that this restaurant is clean and the staff is very friendly and attentive, but the food is just not my cup of tea. read more

God I hate to do this......but alas this is only a 2 star Black Bear Diner. We love, love, love the one in Boise, Idaho so stopped here because.....well because we were hungry! Not busy at all. We ordered and the food came out......it was......just MEH. Sort of lukewarm and not steaming hot. My Big Bob Burger was just ok. The fries looked like they were the last of the bunch since they were all small pieces. Wife's meatloaf was not hot. All in all just a really blah experience in an otherwise amazing chain of restaurants. Server was friendly but not very attentive. The whole atmosphere was just gloomy. My experience here was enjoyable. I met my sister and her husband for lunch, we brought our three month old son not sure what to expect from the service and our sons first outing. They were obviously busy, yet our service was good. Yes there was a minor over sight (they forgot to bring out my green salad which I didn't want any way) but it was ok. My family and I, (aunt's, uncles, cousins, etc.) are all very close and go out often together for birthdays and special occasions.
