We stopped in as tourists in need of a pocket knife. What a unique oddity Black Bird is! You are greeted in the lot by a 30' tall sculpture of a blackbird with poppin' delts. I was able to find a pocket knife that met what I needed and was amazed by the variety of items in the store. We spent some time talking to the birds, Ace and Betty. The face Ace knew to say Pretty Bird like Dumb and Dumber was great! We were only in Medford for one night, but so glad we stumbled upon this treasure! read more

Another Wonderful Experience @ Black Bird in Medford, OR. ! I needed a pair of shoes and found a wonderful pair PLUS a great pair of hiking shoes in their clearance section! I was happy with the price of both. Customer service was amazing as well, and I had a great time interacting with employees like usual. First and last time id ever go in that store again. Pulling up to see the hot dog cart with no employee at it and a large container of Mayonnaise sitting directly in the sun....great way to get food poisoning. Then even worse, walking down an isle to see an employee walk by and blow his nose directly in the air and on the floor then pick in his nose and wipe on his shirt! Absolutely DISGUSTING!!! The store has just about everything you need in terms of hardware, and way more than that. Clothing, toys, pet supplies--a little bit of everything, nicely curated. If you have dogs, you'll love the dog-washing station, unless you love wrestling your dogs into a shower, struggling to keep them in place with one hand and holding the shower wand with the other, and then having them escape and streak all over the house while soaking wet. Here you just hoist them into the professional dog-washing tub and hook them in. One hose lets you rinse, shampoo, condition and flea treat by just turning the dial--easy peasy! The dogs come out clean and soft and you and your bathroom aren't a hairy wet mess. Then treat yourself to a beer at the tap room for being so smart. The lady at the counter will give your dog a treat for being good...even if he's not. read more

Yes it is hard to describe this store IT IS MY FIRST STOP for just about everything. The prices are very competitive. If you can't find something at the big box stores you will probably find it at Black Bird. So you should have checked them out first. They are very community oriented. I've been coming the Black Bird since the early 80's. It's refreshing to go to a well stocked store with knowledgeable associates on the floor. The guys in the screen department are amazing. If your screens are torn or bent, drop em off and they will be repaired and ready in a couple days for a fair price. I am so surprised that people left these 1 star reviews mostly over things that were not really their fault. Yes prices are higher now, supply and demand does apply sometimes, and products are shipped with things missing. Leaving a review like that can be damaging, and unwarranted in a lot of cases. I would rather pay a little more and get a quality product at a locally owned store than shop at a mega store or online for a product. Way to go Black Bird for providing the community for nearly 60 years! PS. My dad used to buy me a hot dog from the guy out front every time we went in! Horrible customer service. Bought a Milwaukee part completely sealed. When I got home I found out it was missing 2 key pieces. I went back to the store and the lady at the front said the system had 2 in stock, but they couldn't find it. The best they could do is issue a refund...but I still needed the part! However, Ace hardware in Ashland had it in stock and they wouldn't have it shipped to the store because Ace hardware is a "different store". So I have to spend an hour of my time for their mess up to go swap out the part I originally asked for. Maybe they get defective parts, so make sure to check ALL parts are included before you leave the store if you dare to buy anything from here. read more

I went in again the other day for more brewing supplies. I wish I'd gotten his name but they were busy and he rushed down to help me. I was making a large IPA batch so we were really toiling with weights. With the over sixteen pounds of grains and malt he wanted to make sure the bag wouldn't break so ran and got a big garbage bag. He also helped me find a few other things that I just couldn't locate. Then at the register is asked the lady if she had any tape that I could just use to hold down the paper bag and she ran over and got it and taped the top of the big bag shut. I had no accidents carrying That precious cargo home with me. That's customer care at the top. Thanks you guys! read more

I was referred by a friend to shop here for home protection; she had a great experience with "Tom" and purchased multiple items as a result. As an early Birthday present, I decided to check them out. I happen to meet "Tom" (not sure if it's the same guy) and he was very helpful when it came to me deciding on my purchase based on: use, personal experience, price of ammo and actual price (~$300-400 range). Tom informed me that they were all out of my ideal choice, but an order would be arriving in the next 2 business days with the specific model on the order list. He took down my information in the form of an invoice and assured me that he would contact me upon receipt of the item in store for pick-up *informative, easy and efficient decision- Thanks Tom* Unfortunately that's where customer service stopped. I initiated a call 2 business days later and was told that they had received the item and to come in anytime *first come, first serve*. I headed there immediately after work. When I arrived, I was told that the item had arrived and I needed to sit at the computer to enter my background check information *thumbs up*. When I glanced down at the items box, I noticed a custom price label that was $65 MORE THAN IT WAS 2 days ago? WTF?! I inquired with the short squatty man who left me do enter my own background check about the pricing, noting that the "suggested retail value" was several dollars less than the hand made price tag attached to the item. He asked me who I talked to and how much they told me it would cost. I told him who and how much. He then told me, "I'll see what I can do". He waddled back a few minutes later and told me very matter of fact that "his cost" was the listed "suggested manufacturer retail price" and that the current price (several $$ more) was doing me a favor based on the current demand. I may not be familiar with specifics, BUT I do my research and I KNOW FOR A FACT that suggested retail price is literally the highest price a shop should ever charge a customer (his stated "cost"). I showed him a list of 20 vendors (including 2 local shops in Medford) who had prices in the $282-$389 range for the exact make/model. The guy then scoffed and said, "supply and demand. Good luck getting your hands on this model, things are selling faster than we can order them. It could be gone tomorrow" and left me standing at the computer to decide if I wanted to finish up my computer automated background check (for which they charge an additional fee). Needless to say, as a female who has done my own research... I do not at all appreciate the sales/scare tactics applied during my interaction when making my purchase. I am especially DISAPPOINTED by the next day "supply and demand" surcharge they attempted to apply to my purchase when it finally arrived. I was pleased with "Tom" and his knowledge and expertise. The short guy needs to stay away from customers; I was not at all impressed. It's like going to buy a brand new car and being told you have to deal with "the manager", then you get raked over and ripped off. I don't trust this place and their sleazy sales tactics. Solid inventory though. I just won't purchase anything in the future, out of principle. I would give no stars if possible. I bought snow goggles from this place thought they were decent. Wore them once and went back to exchange them. While looking at all the others im talking to the dude in the ski shop and he seemed fine with it. Then i go to the counter to return cuz i didnt find any i wanted because the smith goggles rub and irritate my nose really bad. I work at mt ashland its important to have decent goggles. So i try to just return them and everyones mood changed and got really rude and wouldnt let me return a defective product. Never shopping here or sending any one here for gear again lol screw this place. We asked if they made keys there and the checker pointed us to the key making station - we asked them to make a key for our car (so we could take it on the lake instead of the remote key since our only spare was destroyed in the 2020 fire.) We waited for him to look something up on the computer as he kept asking for the same information over and over. Finally he grunted something and pointed at a screen to which I asked to what am I looking at? He was pointing at another electronic key fob - I said oh no we just want a regular key and he angrily yelled at me saying "we don't make house keys!" - I looked at all the keys hanging up and said it looks like you make house keys, but even if you don't, I don't want a house key, it's clearly a car key - he was soo mad - said would you like a manager - I said yes and even he didn't explain anything- just said it's "policy". I didn't get either guys name but the "manager" had on a mask with blonde curly hair and the angry man had lots of tattoos and a large hole from his earring. read more

This place was a wonder of childhood. I was hooked the first time my cousin brought me here on our stingray bicycles after school. It's a local department store that has your - Sporting Goods - Camping - Guns & Ammo - Automotive - Hardware / Plumbing / Housewares - Clothing / Shoes - Upholstery ...supplies all under one roof. Blackbird even has a jewelery dept. it's easy to spend over an hour here just wandering around, looking at all the cool stuff they have. My first backpack and sleeping bag was purchased here, for a survival and navigation class outing, back in Jr. High. Years ago, they also had a couple of black birds in cages, that would say things to the customers wandering around inside (not sure of the species). Seems they still do...however they're down to only one, now. For those coming here to raft down the Rogue River, this is a good place to start, to gear-up for the blitz. read more

The last time I was in here was 1973 and very little had changed. Spent a good hour just walking around and did buy a couple items. I used to ride my sting ray down here and walk in awe around all the GI surplus items (I can still smell it!!). The surplus stuff is gone but the rest of the store is pretty much the same as it was. In this day of big box stores and no personality, it was a breath of fresh air to see life at "The Bird" is still the same! Gun selection was good as was the ammo selection. Prices seemed fair. Loads of outdoor clothing for both men and women (and kiddies!). My best to the folks there and will be back to buy something I don't need soon. read more

One of my oldest memories is Black Bird when I was about 4 my older sister was terrified by the bird in front of the store. If my parents even got close the store she would start crying and freaking out in the car. She is the smart one so it's fun to remind her she was scared of a bird. After locking up my backpack and skateboard in one of their lockers I shopped around for a little less than an hour before getting approached by an employee telling me the manager said I've been here for three hours and I need to leave, and was essentially escorted out. Being one of the main spots I was looking to purchase one or two of their benchmade knives, I will gladly take my business elsewhere and make sure to never shop nor recommend this store to friends or family. Screens, Screens.... If you want your screens repaired you should try Blackbird. I have 15 each, 4' by 7 foot screens around a porch and they replaced the material on all of them in a very timely manner. You can park in back right next to the door and they will load and unload any screens needing repair. Much more pleasant than other stores. I wish they had the heavy duty frame material to replace any frame parts found bent but no-one else doing screen repair has that capability either which means I'll need to get new frames made when damaged beyond repair. Regular screen frame repairs are no problem at Blackbird. read more

Today I went into Black Bird and asked if they had anything to get a hub cap off a car. They sent me to the automotive department which then found a tool and sent a guy to come change my friends tire completely. Thank God he came because he then told us the spare tire was flat. So he went to the gas station, filled it with air, switched the tire and refused to take any money from us. Also they just loaned us the tool and didn't charge us $$ for anything. I am so beyond thankful and I don't know any other store in town that would have done the same thing. Thank you Black Bird and your amazing employees you went above and beyond good customer service!! I grew up in a real small town and when you went to the hardware store the employees were people you had known your whole life, they were happy to be there and knew exactly where everything was. They took pride in their work and you could feel it. It's rare to experience that anymore, as most places have underpaid employees who don't give a crap about their work. But BlackBird is that hometown hardware store. Every time I go in their it's the same as it's always been...great employees, great selection and price, hometown feel. Bought a gas grill from the Blackbird. They didn't have it in stock and had to order it. It came in promptly. I had it assembled by them and delivered. The young man who brought it to me didn't just drop at my front porch but took it around to my back yard, asked where I wanted it, and gave me a quick run thru on how it worked. I use to love blackbird and have always enjoyed shopping here but within the last 5 years their service has been absolutely terrible! I have not gone in there once in years and had good service, everyone is rude, they are annoyed when you need help, the cashiers don't know what sales are going on or willing to find out to better suit you. Very much recommend their stuff but don't expect anything but terrible service! My mom went in to buy a pair of shoes with a obvious price tag of a sale on them, when she got to the counter they rang up $50 more then what the tag said, my mom asked why that was and the lady simply said, "It's just how it is around here, whatever it rings up is the price" Wow! That is terrible response, my mom didn't even bother to buy them. I returned with my mom and asked why and they gave me the same answer and I stated legally they cannot price an item and then not honor it, they eventually got the manager and she basically rolled her eyes and told me the same answer. She told us for the "inconvenience" that she would give us a 10% discount. Thanks but no thanks. I have gone in many times to get several keys copied and the gentleman back there were having a conversation for a good 10 minutes while just staring at me, finally one of the men stand up and says, "Well clearly she's not going away better help her."
