We had the Cajun burrito this time, which we shared, which was shrimp, sausage, black beans, and rice, and not only is it huge, it is tasty, and it's topped with spicy hot salsa, which I used with the fresh tortilla chips with came with the burrito. They offered a $2 16 ounce PBR draft, but it was served in a warm glass, which does not make for a cold beer, hence my deduction of one star. We'll be back, though. read more

I had to check this place out after reading the Yelp reviews. I have to say, lunch started out fairly sketchy, the place was pretty empty when we walked in, not a server in sight, and the restaurant was a bit on the college grunge side - not exactly "clean as a whistle" . She encouraged patience, not my strong suit, and after knocking on the bar, a server appeared from the kitchen. She had the Thai Me Up, I had the Don't Be A Jerk - absolutely one of the best damn burritos I have had at any price. FANTASTIC!!!!! Tasty, huge - she could not finish but half of her's!! They have really good burritos & you could also customize your own burrito. If you are feeling Mexican & want to grab a quick bite, this is the place. The ingredients inside the burritos are "gourmet" & it knocks Chipotle out of the water in comparison to ingredients. I really liked this place. Really cool art, and instead of giving you a number for your order they give you a large plastic toy. I had a fantastic chicken Satay it to Me Softly burrito. The ingredients were fresh right down to the delicious broccoli--which most restaurants murderously overcook, and topped with a Thai peanut sauce as good as most Thai restaurants. My date had the Philly cheesesteak burrito and it was out of this world. I'm not even a particular fan of the Philly cheesesteak sandwich in general, but this concoction was the best. There was a good beer selection, but a pint was served in a 10 oz plastic cup. A glass would be an improvement. As would table side service. I used to eat at Black Cat a lot as a student and coming back 10 years later they still hit the funky burrito mark. Service is at the counter and since students were on vacation we did not have to wait. My husband order the jerk burrito and and I got the Thai me up with shrimp. Both came with slaw and chips. I added a side of mango salsa which was a large amount for just 75 cents. Their mango salsa is fresh without being too sweet. My burrito was excellent. The sunflower seeds add a nice crunch. The raw spinach gave the burrito a freshness and they put plent of shrimp in it. My husband liked his burrito as well. The chips and slaw are good sides for the burritos. Well the plate didn't come with salsa like every other Mexican restaurant I've ever gone too. $.75 cents if you want to enjoy your chips. Kind of a pricy menu to not include that. DO. NOT. EAT. AT. THIS. POOR. EXCUSE. OF. A. "RESTAURANT." CONTACTING THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT TOMORROW. Not only is the wait staff EXTREMELY RUDE but the service and food is just as worse. I have eaten in the worst restaurants in NC but this one takes the cake. We were provided with USED MASKS. That had an excessive amount of animal hair on them. I almost feel as thought that it more unsanitary than COVID!!! After wearing the animal hair infested masks, we were provided ICE COLD queso and stale chips. YUMMY! So many things were wrong including the waitress who would not pull her sweatshirt down, the "manager" who provided her customers with used and hairy masks, and the workers in the kitchen screaming across the restaurant at customers to wear masks. I am not one to complain but this restaurant is absolutely trash compared to the other restaurants surrounding it. SAVE YOURSELF THE TIME and go somewhere else. PLEASE. I did not have a good experience at Black Cat this time. The cleanliness of this place is not what I expect from a restaurant. The food is always pretty tasty, but on my last visit, I took a look through the kitchen. With a 90.0 health score proudly displayed in a duct tape frame, the place has gotten pretty disgusting since my first visit. This time when I came, there was garbage all over the floor, the menu I picked up was sticky, and the whole place had a steamy, humid, environment. Not only do they not wear gloves, but the cooks use rusty prep bowls, and don't wear hairnets or anything. The tofu in my burrito was also too soggy and was barely fried. Perhaps the most cringeworthy thing I saw is that they keep the chips in a rusted metal drawer in the bar area. When I watched the employee put chips on the plate with his bare hands (after touching one of the grubby toys they give out while you wait for your meal and not washing his hands) some of the chips fell onto the counter where the cooks serve the food. He shoved them back into the drawer to be served to guests. That just plain disgusted me. These kids just don't know how to safely prepare food and that concerns me. I don't hate black cat, but I won't be back for a while. Something weird is up with the drink machine too, as my gingerale tasted like straight up B.O. Not to mention, the service was mediocre at best. A place I once really liked is now becoming a place I will probably avoid. read more

Spent a weekend in the mountains with some friends and made it around Boone and checked out some of the local spots. One thing I love about Boone is that it doesn't really seem like your standard college town. Has the appeal for tons of out-of-towners, locals, and collegiate types to enjoy most of the town. Heard great things about Black Cat, read some great reviews, tips, and with a hankering for a burrito, I had to oblige. It's a small, dark interior off of Depot, local art on the walls, some split level tables and booths, canned/bottled beer and tons of carb-loaded menu choices. I had heard whispers of the "multicultural" burrito concoctions, so I ended up choosing the "Don't Be A Jerk" burrito. Jerk chicken, rice, black beans, grilled pineapple, topped with salsa and sour cream. Wow. Talk about a flavorful combination. Subtly spicy, great char flavor, and the salsas were a fine complement. My only critique is that this it's a little difficult for a fork and knifer. The tortilla is pretty chewy, so get your sharp knife out if you can find one. I think next time I'd ask for the salsa and sour cream on the side so I could pick the bad boy up! The chips and queso are also a solid choice. Definitely worth the $4. Every time we go to Boone, we consider eating at Black Cat Burrito but always decide to skip it for some reason. Well, we decided to finally take the plunge today and I must admit - for all the hype, I was pretty disappointed. My first observation was the sanitation score of a 90. Eeep. That's insanely disturbing, but I TRIED to overlook it and blame the building's age. The cooks definitely didn't look like the most sanitation savvy cooks -- no hair nets? Really? You obviously have longer hair...ick. The floor was sticky, everything had a grungy feel...not necessarily a good thing when your getting eating at the place. I get it -- it's a college, cool hangout....that's great. But it's also a restaurant where people eat --- it should be cleaned a little better. After waiting in line (which people seem to just jump ahead of you if you're at all polite and standing off to the side patiently), I ordered our food. I ordered the BLT because I'm a wimp and don't enjoy tasting really adventurous stuff...unless someone else is paying. I ordered one drink and a bean and cheese burrito...in addition to a Ragin' Cajun. The woman took my order and didn't seem very friendly, after swiping my card she shoved a sticky, grungy car in front of me. I obviously have never been to this dive restaurant before, so I had no idea it was a table flag for them to bring our food. Maybe had they been a little more friendly and tell people who aren't regulars, they wouldn't be inconvenienced with my stupid little questions. Just a thought.. My food was a waste of money. It was the BLT - go figure. Not really sure why it's called a "burrito" instead of a chewy tortilla wrap. The spicy mayo was blah - tasted more sour that spicy. The bean and cheese burrito I ordered was actually bean and rice. No cheese. No real flavor, until some of the salsa we ordered was spooned on top. The Ragin Cajun was flavorful and tasted great, despite the smallest shrimp we'd ever seen outside of a Ramen pack. We partially ate our food and sat there confused as to what we were supposed to do. Black Cat Burrito seemed like a good idea at the time... We stopped in at nearly 3pm on a Sunday thinking we'd hit that period where lunch wasn't too crazy. There were 3 people ahead of us in line, but at a burrito place, that wasn't too bad, right? Wrong. We waited for 50 minutes to get our lunch. Obviously something went awry in the kitchen and they were shortstaffed or something, but I was shocked that no one around was complaining, etc. (perhaps easy going Booners don't care?) We were almost in a blood sugar low coma when our thoroughly inefficient serverwho was texting part time and waitressing part time finally brought us our food, she THREW the plates on the table. In fact, she didn't just get our attention by throwing our food at us, but several tables around us asked what was going on and "Did she just throw that at you" and several laughs around. Seems like a 1 star experience right? Why so generous Jules? Well I had the Satay it to me Softly Burrito and it was delicious. It was truly a shame that it took so long. Their menu really is good. Service was poor and staff went from taking money, to sweeping, to mopping, then to take chips out of the tortilla chip container, all without gloves or washing hands in between. Had the pleasure of eating here last Saturday for lunch. What a great find. Who thought such great tasting food could come from a place that almost looks like a dive bar. I had the quesadilla and my husband had the Taco Salad. The portions are huge. The food was flavorful, salsa was fresh and spicy. That day the city was under a boil water advisory, the staff was great even with this added issue. We sat at the bar and the guy behind the bar was very personable considering he was not only serving the bar but also the other tables. I highly recommend this place. Upon reading reviews and checking out the menu online we opted to pop in here for lunch. Stepping inside it is a little dark but adds to the vibe of the place. They have a chalkboard with their select beers painted on the wall at the ordering station. You place your order and you get a random toy as your table marker...I thought it was kinda cool. They have a pop machine to serve yourself if that's what you got. Pick your drink, pick your table. There are various sizes of tables depending on your party size. Lots of vibrant art on the walls. Our group of 4....3 of us got fish tacos. The tortillas were grilled which gave a nice flavor to the taco. And the fish was blackened perfectly on the grill. Tender and flavorful. There was a ranch type sauce but the mango salsa made these fish tacos hit the spot. Also got the queso, guac, hot salsa and chips sampler.....queso was spot on. Had a little zip to it. The hot salsa could have been a little hotter but was super fresh and flavorful. You could see every ingredient present in the salsa. I don't do guac but was told it was awesome. For sure beats out a traditional Mexican place. Staff was also super friendly though they were moving fast on a busy Saturday afternoon. For sure would visit again! read more

I think that this place gets a lot of good reviews just based of word of mouth & a lot of college students that may not appreciate real Mexican food. This was definitely Americanized burritos. Another thing, this place seems to be quiet grungy, and dirty looking back there in the kitchen. They also play very loud headbanger music in the kitchen & the ppl cooking the food looks questionably clean. Let's first just establish the fact that I dream about Black Cat's food...I crave it...and I hate that I moved away from Boone and haven't had any in forever! Don't walk in and expect traditional "Mexican" food, though...that's what Los Arcoiris is for down the road...this place has a unique, creative twist on everything...they even give you a child's toy instead of a number for delivering the food to the tables. Now, down to business...the portion sizes are generous, their plethora of ingredients always taste fresh, and it's a great local "dive" hangout...and oh the chips...they're appropriately salty and oh-so-delicious when they're warm and dipped in queso or mango salsa. Don't let the slightly darker and small interior of the restaurant turn you off from trying one of Boone's hidden treasures for food and live music...this very well may be my first stop next time I head up there for a visit! read more

My boyfriend and I recently visited Boone, NC for a short vacation. We spent the day walking around downtown and popped in to a bar for a drink and to check the game scores where we met the owner of this place. She recommended we check it out for dinner. She was super nice and fun to talk to and as a small business owner myself I like supporting other small business owners. I can't rate the food because we didn't eat here. The menu looked great and I was excited to try it out. I waited in line with my boyfriend for a while to place our order but I have an autoimmune disease that causes fatigue and extreme joint pain and often can't handle walking/standing for super long periods of time. He was next in line so I asked him if he minded ordering for me and I sat down at a table. (There were plenty of open tables and seats). A couple minutes later an employee came by, said he was the manager, and said that it was against their policy for me to sit down without having food. I explained the situation and that my boyfriend was next in their very slow moving line and he said he didn't care, that's their policy so that things "flow properly". The family in front of us in line were already at a table and the family behind us in line already had a table. Nobody else was looking for a table except people in the back of the line. He told me I had to get up and wait until I had food to sit down. I walked over to my boyfriend, a family who just walked in the door went over and took the table I'd be sitting at and other people behind us took every other table meaning that once we had received food we wouldn't have had anywhere to sit so we left. Black cat holds a special place in my heart. I was 18 years old when I first experienced Black Cat in Boone. As a young freshman at App State I would save my money and go out once a month with friends to eat here! This place is exactly the same as it was 12 years ago (man, I'm getting old). The menus are the same, the food is the same, and the employees all seem like they are the same! The food is YUMMY! You can build your own burrito or order one of their specialty burritos. I've tried them all, but my favorite is the white trash bbq burrito. Spicy and delicious! All of the burritos come with a side of tortilla chips and cole slaw. The slaw isn't mayonnaise (y) at all. I'm not sure if it's vinegar based. It's delicious, though! This place is on the divey side, so if you're wanting an upscale experience, move on. They wouldn't want you anyways! Just kidding. They do have a wide selection of menu items. The concept is to build the burrito of your choice by allowing you several choices of ingredients. They also vegetarian options. Great idea! The choice of beers were excellent as well as the service. If you are looking for a decent meal at a great price this is the place for you. Do not come here is you are looking for authentic Mexican food. Ignore the décor of you are not into the Beatnik ambiance. One more thing, ask for your chips medium rare. Not really "Mexican" even though they are burritos, but delicious anyway. It can be expensive if you build your own with any of the options because they charge per topping, but overall it isn't too pricey if you stick to the normal menu items. The burritos I often choose are the Greek or the Thai. This might have to do with the fact that my visits to Black Cat often happen after one of these two burritos has been haunting my dreams, but I have occasionally tried other things and haven't been disappointed. Eating in is very chill, it's self-service except for getting your food. I often pop in to order take out and they are always pretty quick with it....or maybe I just don't notice how long it takes because I have a tasty Foothills beer and a toy to play with? Music events are hit and miss here, it can be a little weird/empty or completely awesome. Definitely seen some strange things here, but I'll just leave the review to the restaurant side. read more

A place that has great salsa & guacamole recipes is always a good hint to great Mexican food. We had the everything sampler that had queso, choice of salsa & guac. We tried the hot salsa & it was very flavorful with a good kick but not too spicy where you're in pain to eat. The guac was also very flavorful (probably one of the best I've tasted in a long time)! I had the Don't be a Jerk Burrito with chicken & would definitely order again! Packed with sweet flavors of pineapple & spicy from the jerk sauce/seasoning.
