A place that has great salsa & guacamole recipes is always a good hint to great Mexican food. We had the everything sampler that had queso, choice of salsa & guac. We tried the hot salsa & it was very flavorful with a good kick but not too spicy where you're in pain to eat. The guac was also very flavorful (probably one of the best I've tasted in a long time)! I had the Don't be a Jerk Burrito with chicken & would definitely order again! Packed with sweet flavors of pineapple & spicy from the jerk sauce/seasoning. It has been years since I've been to Boone and despite all the changes here in the time since, there are some establishments you just remember - Black Cat is one of those places. With a dive bar feel (its literally below street level) and plenty of unique options, it's hard to go wrong with Black Cat...but something is holding this place back. I had the Chorizo tacos. They were pretty good, tssty, with local cheeses that tasted local and fresh. The sides were a complete miss however - whether beans, slaw, or rice...nothing stood out. Thai Me Up is my go to wrap here-- green spinach burrito, stuffed with spicy tofu, a peanut sauce, and spinach with a side of slaw and tortilla chips. It is really good and filling. They also offer free quesadillas for children, which is great. I cannot get past how sticky the floors are (this place opens up to music/bar in the evenings), they never appear to have been mopped. I also am kinda grossed out by the old toys that are given to you so that the server knows where to bring your food-- they are also sticky and dirty. I have never been brave enough to check out the restrooms. This is a good spot for a quick and inexpensive lunch in downtown Boone. read more

I had an conference to attend in Boone one evening. When it was over some friends and I were really hungry, so we asked a local where we could get a good bite for omnivores and vegans alike. We were directed here. I must say there is not a lot on the menu for vegans. Their rice has butter and their guacamole has cream in it. I did manage to get a pretty tasty black bean salad. My friends plates all looked well made and the food seemed very fresh. The beer selection was my favorite thing about the place. Quite a lot of beer at good prices. Black Cat Burrito is the real enchilada (excuse my Mexican food pun). But seriously, this place is worth seeking out. Went there for the first time this past weekend with some friends on a trip up to the Boone-area. I was familiar with their menu because I had eaten at it's sister restaurant, the Lucky Otter, in Asheville and I was very excited to try it again. For the less adventurous it may require stepping outside of your comfort zone in order to sample their unique and flavorful burritos (they aren't really burritos in the traditional sense in either their ingredients or flavor), but you will be patting yourself on the back (and stomach) once you take the first bite. I had the Thai burrito, complete with chicken, broccoli, carrots, cheese, onions, rice, all wrapped up in a spinach tortilla and topped with a peanut sauce. An absolute pleasure with every mouthful. The slaw that comes on the side is also very fresh and bright, which just adds to the already pleasant dining experience. Also, the Black Cat gets big points for their beer selection. Good (and local) beers on draft which will always get you a favorable recommendation in my book. All in all, a really good and original place to eat. I would definitely go back if I'm in the area again, and would highly suggest others do the same. read more

For the record: BCB serves only locally grown, free range, organic black cats. :) If you're looking for a typical Mexican burrito joint, keep walking. If you like eclectic fare with a side of awesome, come on in. BCB recognizes that a burrito can be filled with just about anything. I had The Bloke, which was stuffed with apples, bacon, and much more. My companions also had atypical insides to theirs. The ingredients of mine blended together a little too well, with the bacon and apples not really jumping out much as I would like. Don't let that dissuade you- it was a very good burrito. The bowl of gazpacho I had was quite flavorful, with perhaps the only complaint being it wasn't quite cold enough for what I expected. :) BCB has a small selection of good beers- and I was surprised there were no NC beers on the menu. I definitely enjoyed my visit to Black Cat, and I will more than likely return the next time I get up to Boone. read more

If you are ever in Boone, you MUST try Black Cat. I insist! The atmosphere is very chill but fun too. I'm not a huge fan of "mexican food," as it was described to me after I had already decided to go. So not being completely sure, I just had a bowl of beans, rice, and salsa. It was cheap, $3.75, so I wasn't breaking the bank for an iffy item. The service was faster than I expected and the table markers are absolutely hilarious. I was pleasantly surprised by my simple dish; it was spicy but I refused to stop eating until I was done. That's huge for me since I hate spicy food! The bottom line for this place is: just go at least once. The menu isn't too huge but varied enough that it might take a while to figure out what you really like. If you find that you're a fan, you can even get a sticker and put it somewhere for all to see. Now, one final note: I wasn't too keen on the spacing. I went for a surprise birthday party and we (a group of ten plus) were very uncomfortable trying to find a seating arrangement that would best suit the occasion. Therefore, four stars. Build Your Own Burrito - wonderful. I was a bit worried at first glance, definitely a "hole in the wall" but a favorite among the college students so my daughter suggested we give it a try. We were visiting Boone from out of town and decided to check out Black Cat for dinner, since it came recommended on Yelp. It was a toss up between Black Cat and another restaurant and we both wish we had picked our first choice. The Black Cat menu sounds incredible but there is something missing in the execution. The "burritos" are more of a wrap than a burrito. It was dark inside and had weird panther murals on the wall. Paired with the underwhelming burritos we left disappointed. Maybe it was an off night or maybe it was what we ordered but next time we find ourselves in Boone we won't be stopping by Black Cat. read more

Yum!!! Black Cat Burrito knows how to put together some really good food. I got some sort of bbq burrito and it was delicious, as well as the slaw. Maybe I just went on a bad day, but from start to finish it wasn't that great. Went there off a recommendation from a local, so took the leap! The girl who was taking the order wasn't very friendly. I ordered the burger burrito. I asked for no LTO and if I could just put in sautéed mushroom and onions instead. Well that wasn't allowed, because "that was complicating the order." "I needed to build my own." So I decided to just order the burger burrito with no LTO side of sautéed mushroom and onions. I'm also really hesitant to tip upfront before receiving my meal and all. Especially to counter derive. But, going off the local I left $5.00 and causally went my way. (I've been in the industry, I get it. Tips are just kind to do for all!) My order comes up and I bite into it and my mouth was on FIRE! I don't like spicy and I check inside and I have buffallo chicken, bacon, etc. Clearly this wasn't what I ordered but I did go grab a menu to check because I hate being that person who has an issue. Maybe I read it wrong..well I didn't order it wrong it was placed wrong. I bring it to the front counter and the girl who placed the order walked over and asked what was wrong. (keep in mind she had the worst attitude) I explained how it was not the burger burrito it was some spicy chicken meal. Rather then just being polite, she walks away with the plate grabs a pad and starts giving me attitude. "So what did you want" I said well, here's the menu.. I asked for this ... and we even discussed the toppings. She looked at me like I was some idiot and had a confused look on her face. So I said again to her no LTO and you told me before it isn't french fries anymore it's with tator tots, correct? Literally reiterating what SHE told me when I ordered it. Confirming to her I ordered right and she did it wrong. There was ZERO apology. ZERO accountability. There was no kindness on her end to fixing the order. It was just attitude, almost like how dare I come up with this issue that she caused. I felt very uncomfortable and when she even brought the new dish over my stack of tortilla chips were gone, there was about 5 total, I had maybe a spoon of slaw slapped on the plate.. clearly it was just thrown together for my inconvenience on their mistake. Cut into it, was covered in pickles.. not ONE ingredient under that states "pickles on burrito" so that meal was trashed. I didn't even want to go back up and complain yet again for them to make another mistake. Sorry I won't be back, nor will I ever give a good word of mouth review if asked about this place. Like I said, I have been a server/host/food runner etc. I was polite with the 20% tip, and had I known it would end like this I would have not left that. Especially considering they are all probably on an hourly pay since it was counter service. Hope someone takes this issue serious and makes some changes because that was just not right. read more

Was recommended to come in by a local for the "best burrito in town," and I have to say I'm impressed. Just my kinda place, hole in the wall type atmosphere, plain wood top tables each one different unfinished concrete floor, odds-n-ends lighting, and classic rock playing on the radio, but quick service, huge portions, and very reasonable prices (a specialty burrito and a locally brewed beer cost $12). Flavors may be a touch "unauthentic mexican" but for a burrito joint in the mountains of NC... A+ Try the Ragin Cajun burrito(it's a lil spicy), and a Foothills Porter beer(if you like darker beers). read more

Excellent food. I take people here every time I have a visitor coming into town. It's a regular choice for me - i.e., my go-to food joint for something affordable and delicious. You MUST try their fish tacos, but if those aren't for you and neither are their other options, keep in mind you can build your own burrito, nacho platter, or quesadilla. I always get the nachos and load them up. They run out of fish tacos on Fridays all the time so go early. I took my cousin who was visiting and they ran out although we were looking forward to fish tacos. She tried the nachos and was more than satisfied despite the fish taco issue. I grew up in Boone but didn't discover Black Cat until I was in High School. It is by far my favorite spot for comfort food in Boone, a heaping plate of nachos with their fresh salsa, beans and queso is extremely filling, but you won't feel guilty afterwards. If you are looking for authentic mexican cuisine, this is not your place, but it is an awesome take on southwestern food. The atmosphere is chill, college-y and laid back, the walls are decorated with works of local artists and is family friendly as well as a great place to enjoy a burrito and a variety of beers. The salsa is what stands out the most, it is fresh, and always packed with flavorful ingredients. Not expensive, best place to go hangout with friends and stuff your face. read more

I'm a senior at App and I have served as an ambassador since my freshman year, giving tours and also giving tips to parents and students for favorite local places to eat....Black Cat was always my top suggestion. However, recently the service, atmosphere, and food has been nothing short of disappointing. The last time I ate there I was served a soggy, tasteless burrito and to top it all off the salsa I ordered had gone bad. Came to Boone for open house at ASU. Good friend who is also an alum recommended Black Cat. What a cool place. Can't make a reservation but the serve really fast- so wait is not long. I ordered the wrong thing for my nephew and went to re-order (and pay) for went to order/pay to get the correct thing and they did t let me! They corrected the order error (that was my fault) and didn't charge. The service was great the staff was great - if he chooses ASU we will 100% be back here to eat :) read more

I checked this place out after reading some great reviews on Yelp. My friend and I were just passing through Boone and we were starving. So, we had lunch at Black Cat Burrito. I had a tofu and black bean burrito and my friend had steak enchiladas. For the price, you can't beat it! My burrito was huge and good, but not the best burrito I've ever had. The tofu was really good. The beans seemed a little undercooked. They put the salsa on top of the burrito, which made for a pretty presentation, but made the tortilla a little soggy and extra messy for eating. Despite these minor complaints, I scarfed down the whole thing. My friend really enjoyed his enchiladas and cleaned his plate. I don't get to Boone very often, but would consider returning to Black Cat Burrito on my next trip. read more

After reading about this place i was expecting it to meet or surpass any expectation however the food was a disappointment. My quesadilla was burnt and had rice in it (which made it taste super gross). My boyfriend sad that qdoba's burritos were better than the one he got there. The guacamole is really good but their queso tastes like its store bought and not fresh. Overall this place was disappointing with its guacamole being the only reason i would consider coming back, though i doubt that i will. The service is fantastic but the food was less so. read more

Mediocre food. I ordered the enchiladas and they were served on cold flour tortillas in a soup of queso that was only slightly reminiscent of real cheese. I can hardly believe that they would advertise these as enchiladas. We tried to wait and give them a few minutes but we finally decided to get up and leave. They watched us get up and leave and said "buy guys". No hello when we walked in no drinks no nothing. Went on July 3rd, I had a good experience before... So I wanted to go back. Went in around 3PM, when we ordered our food the server told us it "would be awhile" because they were backed up. This was ok, in a place designed like this (order up front, make burritos etc, get food delivered) I thought it would be like 20-30 min, it was an hour and ten minute wait to get a quesedilla and some nachos. I just think if they see people waiting and the food would be over an hour a nice thing to do is 1. Check in on them after 30 min 2. Offer some free chips/salsa 3. Get some sort of free food. It was ridiculous and it wasn't even packed (about 2-3 tables were empty) read more
