Update - when I picked up a firearm today, I informed them of the "new" law. Under CA Assembly Bill 1982 - veterans are exempt from the safe handling demonstration and our VA ID card suffices as proper identification. Once I reviewed that the guys agreed that it seemed to be correct and they gave me a refund on the needless firearms, safe handling demonstration, and exam that I had taken needlessly. Once more - the guys who work here are SOLID. Great group of guys working at a lack Dog! They simply had not been updated about the change to the law. And no big surprise, the California state auditors had given them a hard time; which is par for the course in CA. These guys did not make me do a safe handling demo because they wanted to be jerks. They were simply trying to adhere to the innumerable and constantly changing laws of the land. Never once did I feel like they were giving me FUDD nonsense just for the sake of it. They were trying to merely adhere to the endless, nonsensical "laws" here in CA. I will for sure continue to bring my business to black dog. It is a great local shop with good selection and we need to make sure that they can keep the doors open and the lights on.!! read more

Black Dog is a place where you really expect all there is to expect from a properly operating gun shop but the customer service and the characters you interact with elevates it. Aaron and Alex both helped me with purchasing my first couple of guns and have answered any questions I have with great detail and enthusiasm. Even for doing PPT transfers, my complaint is that I wish they're more flexible on when and what times to do it. But despite that downside, its still a shop I highly recommend anyone in Fremont to check out. read more

I wanted to clean some of my boyfriend's guns but he didn't have any supplies so we went here. The place isn't hard to find, we just got confused and tried entering in front when the entrance was at the back. We opened the door and I was welcomed with the familiar scent of carbon and brass. Brings back memories. They have a huge selection of ammo, accessories, guns, etc. I asked one of the staff to help me pick some cleaning supplies and he was very helpful. These guys are friendly and extremely knowledgeable about the products they carry and the laws surrounding them. There really is a black dog in there store once in a while. He's humungous, but is such a good boy. When working with the employees, they give you very careful and professional attention. They really had me covered when I purchased my Springfield. With that being said, this care and attention can bring the customer line to a grinding halt for actual hours. I really like the guys working here, but they do appear to be understaffed and overworked the times I've visited. And the amount of paperwork they have to deal with can make a normal person lose their mind. Overall, this is a place I do want to come back to and make more purchases, but I also do find myself considering strategic times to do so. read more

I recently sent my 9mm slide out to get some work done, and because of AB1263 I had to have my own slide shipped back to an FFL. After calling several FFLs in the area, I chose Black Dog Armory because they were the only one that wasn't charging a fee just to receive my slide . Alex helped me out when I came in, and he was friendly and knowledgeable. From the moment he asked, "How can I help you?" to walking out the door with my slide, the whole process took about 10 minutes. Quick and easy! Since they did not charge me I decided to purchase a couple of 45 Magazines but when I got home there were fitment issues. I had such a great experience at Black Dog that the very next day I brought my 1911 in to see if they could help with magazine fitment issues I was having. That's when I met Mike, who from the start made me feel like I'd known him for years. He listened to what was going on and introduced me to Daniel. Daniel didn't say much, but he took a look at the issueand after several minutes, brought the magazines to the back, worked his magic, and before I knew it my 1911 was operating perfectly with the magazines. I visited Black Dog on a Saturday afternoon. Easily passed up five other armories on the way. I built my first AR-15 platform rifle and I wanted to get the blessings of a reputable gunsmith before I sent anything down range. I chose this place, because of word of mouth and in part online reviews. I spoke to Daniel, he shook my hand and I asked him if he would be willing to do a once-over on my build. Great location. Staff is great to interact with. They can get rather busy so don't expect a quick trip in and out. Most people that come in the location actually purchase something so they have to do the DROS paperwork and it takes time. Really wish California made a more automatic system for this so gun store owners could get back to helping customers and conversing instead of just paper pushing. Maybe implement something into the real id so they can just swipe but knowing California they want to make it as hard as possible. Overall they have a small selection of consignment. Standard selection of handguns that are the most popular anyone would want for HK, Sig, S&W, and Glock. They carry some ARs and benellis. Not very heavy with precision stuff though. Carry some ar15 tools, and scopes. They usually will have Anderson and aero ar15 bare lowers. Overall solid place to shop. read more

Most of the Guys there have good Customer Service but the guy with the glasses & long hair is a douchebag.. I got my AK47, PWS AR 15 appraised and bought a couple Stripped Lowers ... Their Gun Smith was Very polite and Knowledgeable but I rather buy my Guns & Build them in my original FFL in Orangevale. Rudest place that I have been to. Given that there are many people can't afford to purchase a firearm, especially with Newscom's 11% tax on top of regular tax, I would not be rude to people coming in to shop at this establishment. I went in to see if a certain tool was available. The person doing inventory responded in a condescending manner -" Are you cop?" he said. "No?, then I can't sell you what you're looking for!" So I asked, what else do you have in a .380. He responded annoyed that I asked, "I'm trying to do inventory" I'm thinking W T F is up with this dude. He reluctantly showed me one .380 and I wasn't impressed with it. I said thank you and left. If it was my store and business wasn't booming, even if it was I would have said, well let me show you what other ones we have available. We have xy and z, do any of them work for you? But no, he evidently felt he had to get back to inventory. I left and went to the next store with similar products. First of all, I had to convince myself that it would be okay to spend money on a want, not a need and pay the extra 11% Newscum tax at this establishment. Second, as if people are flocking in to purchase at the current tax rate, one would be grateful for someone walking in trying to spend their hard earned money at this establishment. I was wrong. First off the place smells like cat piss. All I was looking for was a wrench for my AR. Found exactly what I was looking for but it was in the glass case opposite the gun case. One salesman was helping three people at the counter and the other sales people were sitting down having a conversation. I waited for about 10 minutes until I heard a female mention to the male employees that were sitting down that there's a couple customers in here. The older gentleman responded with a head nod that he understood they were customers but he didn't care and decided to ignore us. Hubby has been wanting to buy some ammo for his shotgun for quite some time and was not able to find a place nearby where he lived. We were in the area waiting to see our friends to drop off some gifts for their little one, but they never got back to us. So Hubby googled places nearby and called to make sure they have what he wanted and we made our way over there. There was no line when we arrived, as it was late afternoon. I've been here a few times, nice enough staff. But very slow. Beyond slow, this is just about as bad as DMV probably worse. The an Asian gentleman Alex that's upfront with all the anxiety makes any purchase here a nightmare. I understand wanting to inform customers on laws and what is expected of them. But this guy is to a whole different level. Might even be on the spectrum not sure. This would be such a great shop if the staff wasn't the way they are with time. I understand we are at your will when it comes to firearms / ammo and whatever else. But being professional and respectful to customers goes a long way. This store lacks mannerisms. I'm honestly shocked this place is still open by the way it's ran. It takes an hour plus to do anything here. From Glock, springfield, sig, S&W, they'll have most of what you need. They can get busy but be patient!
