Three of us stopped in for a late lunch, one guy from town and two guys from Muskegon, MI. Janeen was our superb waitress. Bright, cheerful, and energetic. She took our beverage order and returned quickly to take our food orders. Two opted for the grinder & homemade chips and I chose the 1/2 lb cheeseburger with the chip & a side order of onion rings. The food arrived quickly (the rings first) and my two friends both said the grinders were delicious! My burger was cooked as requested (medium rare) and both juicy and delicious. The onion rings were huge with a light batter cooked a perfect light gold. The thrre of us said they were some of the best tings we have ever tasted. I even brought home the survivng two for my brother, who also loves great onion rings. Janeen was always alert and checking upon our wants or needs. She was the consummate waitstaff woman. Kudos Janeen for allowing us to truly enjoy a great lunch food stop with a perfect person to take care fo us. I wish she lived worked closer to Muskegon so many could benefit from her presence. 3 1/2 hours is more tha a casual drive for lunch, but if you're in the area I would highly recommend stopping & eating here (please ask for Janeen). Met some out of town friends here. This place is a staple of Fort Wayne. People might say it's dark and gloomy but that is the character of the place. Th waitresses are always nice and helpful. I do notice there is not a turnover of staff which is a great sign. The food here is the all American menu and it wonderful. If one were to come here I would recommend their "Shrooms". They are hand breaded and HUGE! In this day, I got the club sandwich which is so big this could be meal for two. The house chips were part of the side which are made in house. My husband got the fish-n-chips and he said it was good but just not the best. Remind you this is more of a burger place. Myself, I tried his meal and liked it. So it depends on the person. They have a room for family and a bar room. So all ages can come. The only negative thing I can say is if they are slammed busy, there is only one bathroom (toilet) for each gender. Black Dog Pub is a cozy place with a hometown feel and mellow atmosphere. It is hidden off Covington Road on the southwest side of town just down from Walgreens. Parking can sometime be tricky, mostly because it is always busy. There are lots of regulars who fill up the bar rail as this is popular, local establishment. The service has always been good but sometimes a little slow. Seating can be limited as the pub is not very big. They offer bar seating but there is a family friendly side for those who bring the kiddos. I am always impressed with the long list of craft beers they offer including local drafts. They also have lots of options on the menu both for lunch and dinner. They also have daily specials. The pizza is always a top choice but I am also a fan of the ribs and the burger. I love this little place. Love the atmosphere the food and the service. I also love that they have a patio! Prices are great and they have tasty food options. I just wish it was closer to home! I have been for dinner and lunch and both times they are busy. I have also gone to hang out at the bar rail and it's always packed. I love their chili. It's got the right amount of heat and beans and meat with a great soup base. I always order it when I go to eat. The place is clean and maintained but it is on the small side. ESP when the patio is closed for the winter. Staff is very friendly and knowledgeable of what they have on the menu and their beers. They are better known for beers vs cocktails but they can make anything. Regulars frequent often and keep going back because the staff gets to know them personally. I had one of their salads last time and it was more than enough and prepared great while tasting very fresh. The chicken was well seasoned and the dressing was spot on. Walking in the front door, I followed my nose, the delicious aroma of grilled food both enticed me, and increased my level of hunger. Decor is common to pubs. Green painted walls with white trim, appropriate pictures and likenesses of a "black dog" throughout the bar, and what I found to be nifty; (and scarce) purse hangers at the bar. Cleanliness was above average, and being the child of a germaphobe, I know what I'm looking for. Patrons were a glorious example of Americana, from "urban" to "country" and everyone in between, both young and old. There is a jukebox, but never fear, no TouchTone here. (Very large selection of music, reflecting fellow guests quite well.) Service was great. My fiancé and I took a booth at the front with a great view of the place, and within a few minutes we were greeted with a smile by our server. Beer selection was better than 80% of establishments. The correct "domestics" and imports as well as a pleasant craft presence on the menu as well. (Also, on a side note; my fiancé's Washington Apple was SUPERBLY mixed. A simple drink, that somehow gets ruined everywhere we go in Ohio.) Food arrived prompt, and HOT! No simmering under the heat lamps here. The onion rings I ordered with my burger were ENORMOUS, and perfectly battered and golden brown. Best I've ever had. If my onion rings were ENORMOUS, then my burger was MONSTROUS!!! The 1/2lb. A truly formidable foe. The fiancée ordered a Sweet Chili Chicken wrap. It arrived at the table sporting s green tortilla, and a side of home-made potato chips. (Crisps.) which were totally awesome, but a bit overdone, but nevertheless, tasty. Her chicken wrap was delectable. Sweet, with a touch of everlasting heat, that was easily removed with a sip of our beverages. The chicken was cooked well, and the peppers and sauce accompanying the chicken were out of this world delicious. I guarantee you've never tasted anything this unique before! Now, price; what some of you are waiting hear about... Of all the places I've been: chain, private, trendy, and old, Black Dog Pub is priced perfectly. From the price of my awesome Busted Knuckle pint, to my delicious burger, all fair. The only thing on the menu I felt was priced a little high was the appetizers. But let's face it, this is a pub, and people out for a few drinks may not want a whole meal. High priced appetizers are common everywhere, because it's an easy couple of bucks for any place to make, although I don't agree with it, I don't see it as a negative mark either. I'm not sure why so many people said their service was bad - we had excellent service tonight; the waitress was nice, fast with our orders and drinks and she had a good sense of humor. Maybe they've made efforts at correcting that problem? I should have gotten their pizza or their tenderloin (which is as big as advertised - insane big). Black Dog Pub is a surprising gem: I didn't expect to find such genuinely good food in a nondescript strip mall next to a Goodwill and a massage parlor. Now having eaten there a few times, I have had some pretty good food that exceeds expectations. The menu at Black Dog is a little "unfocused," ranging from pizza to pork shanks to subs to steaks. It's kind of hard to look at their menu and know what you should choose since there doesn't seem to be an area of specialty. The options are also pretty "basic" for the most part and the food looks plain - sometimes even sloppy - but it's all executed very well. The burgers have a nice char, and the subs are hearty and well-balanced. The bar area is often crowded and noisy, but it has a real neighborhood feel it - you get the sense that the place is full of regulars. I found eating in the normal dining area (away from the bar) a bit inhospitable: you seat yourself and it feels like you're just hoping for a server to find you. It also isn't the most family friendly place - my wife and I got a bunch of strange looks for trying to eat there with our daughter. These things might make Black Dog a more middle-of-the-road kind of restaurant, but it is elevated by having one truly superlative food: their onion rings are the absolute best I've ever had. They are big (but not too big, which is how I would describe Burger Fi onion rings), and the coating is very crispy and flavorful - it has a sort of yeasty crunch like a good waffle. I initially found Black Dog when looking for a local place with good onion rings, and this aspect of the restaurant has continued to deliver every time we've gone there. I can't promise *everything* is great, but I can say you're unlikely to have eaten better onion rings. read more

The Black Dog Pub. If you have never been here before I'm going to guess you have heard of this place. They have a good tap selection, nice cocktails and really good food. I ordered a burger with all the fixings and it was delicious! Too the point i think the 1 lb burger is possible for me to complete and I am not a big guy. This time around however I got the onion rings as a side and WOW! They are not your normal sized ones jumbo and the breading is nice and even for the size they do not leave an onion after taste in your mouth. The service is hit or miss depending on how busy they are and this time was an off time so it was good service. If you have no idea where to eat. I have been here a few times and had a great experience each time. They have a lot of beer on tap and some of it is unusual. For instance, they had a tangerine cream ale and a peanut butter porter. Both were very good. The size of the beer is usually a pint, but some of their beers come in 10oz servings. The beer prices are reasonable at around $5 for the craft beers and around $4 for pints of domestic. Last night they had $2 bottles of Bud. Their food is also worth talking about. The wings are very good. The coleslaw is very good. They got a pork tenderloin that is massive and has a homemade bun that is huge to go with it. Their Calzone is massive; it looked like the size of a pizza folded in half.I would say it was twice the size of what I have seen at other restaurants. The fish and chips is very good too. Decent place inside. It was totally packed on a Sunday night when we arrived, so I expected the best. Unfortunately, the food was generally disappointing. My wife got the fish and chips. The French Fries were undercooked and the fish had little flavor. I had a half slab of ribs--which they brag about on the menu--so I was hoping for some good BBQ. When they arrived, I found they were swimming in some of the strongest BBQ sauce I've ever had--telling me something about how they cook the ribs. We had a very tasty lunch, the special was a brisket sandwich, which is made in house, my husband ordered that. I opted for the Reuben. Go for the homemade potato chips, they were much better than the fries! Both the sandwiches were great, we each had 1/2 of each. They seem to be proud of all the beer they have on tap. And to be fair, it is a good selection. My parents took me to the Black Dog Pub to begin our night of carousing. They love this place, and I wanted to love it too. They bragged that they had never had anything at the Black Dog that hadn't been great, so I felt confident that I would be getting a good meal. Sadly, I think my choice of meal didn't play to their strong suit. Everybody in our group ordered good ol' bar food: pizza and wings and the like. They all said it was great. Meanwhile, after several days of holiday overeating, I was trying to get back to my usual healthy diet - I had a salad. I was proud of myself: a salad when pizza was right in front of me. The mixed greens salad included chicken, so I thought I would be satisfied and ready to start a night of drinking. But the salad was all iceberg lettuce, the serving of chicken was skimpy, and the dressing - raspberry vinaigrette - was unimpressive. In the end I should have known better. This was a bar with a restaurant section, not the other way around. The service was alright. It was busy but not packed, and our server didn't seem too interested in being pleasant. She served us our orders and kept our drinks full, but she didn't seem too thrilled about doing it. Again, maybe I expected too much. Bottom line: it's a bar. Get food here that you expect at a bar. Your waitress will bring you your order, and you won't go wanting for anything but maybe some hospitality. People love this place, so it's got something good going on. Maybe next time I visit Ft. As we were walking up to the door a lady was being carried out by her companion. She had obviously had too much to drink. Interesting...it was only 8:30 at night. Kinda early for that but...whatever. Walked in - typical bar scene. Saw an empty table and grabbed it. Waitress came right over with menus, and pointed out the beers on draft. Good selection. I ordered a sample of one; my husband ordered his. Few minutes later she comes back with two beers - no sample. Ok...no biggie. I'll give it a try. Sipped a few times - didn't like it. My husband asked her to take it away and bring another one - promptly replaced. She took our burger order. Meanwhile the bar scene got interesting. Two men at the bar decided to argue over whether or not you could smoke a "vape" cigarette inside. On the other side a group was yelling to friends across the bar...obviously they had had a few too many. Burger arrived - no French fries. Back to the kitchen to order fries...they arrived five minutes later. Piping hot...decent. The only bright spot was indeed the burger. Black dog burger - fantastic. Half pound of deliciousness. Bill came - we were charged for both beers. Waitress said she tried to get it removed...no luck. We disagreed - she went away and came back with the first beer charged as a "sample" for $2.25. I have NEVER been charged for a beer I didn't like...and definitely have never been charged for a sample. She could tell we weren't happy...and we told her we would not be back. Wow- I don't know where to start because the layers of bad are numerous. First, food; we got onion rings and award winning 'Shrooms" for starters; both had the same identical lack of seasoning and were undercooked. We then moved on to the Big Ass Fish And Big Ass Tenderloin sandwiches... the menu should simply label them as "Ass" sandwiches. Imagine a giant bun covered in over cooked strips of breading with the same amount of meat you find in a smelt, accompanied with a tartar sauce that tastes straight from a bottle. The not-so tenderloin Ass sandwich was similarly over breaded and under "meated". Drinks; asked if they had Black&Tans, she said yes, and delivered two of them with both the stout and Bass ale seamlessly mixed together, essentially making it a "Black" with tan genes. Lastly the service: when your waitress is condescending and seems to hate her life, and wants you to hate yours, you start questioning their vocational choice. We asked her "which fish do you recommend, the Big Ass Fish Sandwich or the Fish & Chips" Her response- "well, they're both different fish." Reminded me of the scene from Dumb & Dumber when the waitress clarified the Soup du Jour being the Soup of the Day... no sh*t! My husband and I were driving from Indianapolis to Michigan and I was really looking forward to trying The Black Dog's sandwich so we veered off our route to specifically go to this restaurant. We walked in and the reception was a bit cold. We were told to sit anywhere and asked to sit outside. A table was cleared for us rather quickly and we ordered a beer and a rum and Coke. And then we waited. And waited. And waited. A lady joined a table next to ours 10 minutes after our waitress took our drink order and ordered a beer. She was brought her beer within a few minutes while we still didn't have our drinks. At that point we left. I hesitate to say this, as racial tension is at an all time high right now and it's so clichè to blame everything on racism, but I can't help but wonder if we weren't welcome because we are black. I HATE to wonder this, but we were to only black people there and they were not busy. Perhaps it was an off day, but as a person who's previously worked as a waitress and who's traveled extensively in this state, country and all over the world, I know when I'm not welcomed. So I left, extremely disappointed because I really wanted my husband, who grew up in Berlin, to experience Indiana's take on Weiner Schnitzel. Sometimes it's the little things that make all the difference. While this may seem like just another strip mall bar, one finds an amazing Hoosier pork tenderloin here. They are hubcap size and clearly pounded by hand. Crunchy and not overly oily. To be honest, I like a bit more seasoning and the meat a bit thicker, but still a great tenderloin. What really makes it though is that house made bun! I know it's heresy to have a a big bun--the sight gag of the tiny bun resting on the dumbo ear sized tenderloin is part of the allure---but this bun is really good. Get it home 45 minutes away and it was missing some of the toppings. And the ones that were on there were very skimpy except for the pepperoni. The waitresses were super nice even though they were short a person, which usually causes workers to be grumpy. That said, it took an hour to get our food and my grilled bun was burnt. Otherwise the food was good. The grilled tenderloin was huge and tender not grisly. The fried spicy chicken sandwich was excellent. We enjoyed the garlic cheese bread which was good, the marinara needed more flavor but we added salt. The atmosphere was mixed, loud but we could easily chat. Some disruptive people near the bar but mostly families and couples. I wouldn't say we would never go back but as we were just trying something new and we don't live nearby, the odds are low.
