I dont think they missed a pickup in my 3 years working with them. if there's a delay d/t holiday or blizzard they notify by email kitchen waste icomposting through them reduced my garbage by 1/4 to 1/4 it is a commitment but my conscience feels better and I'm not attracting rats to my property. ! read more

I typically have nothing but good things to say about Black Earth and their Friday pickups, but today they decided to ignore my instructions -- instructions based on their instructions -- for the delivery of compost. I could have done my own hauling from a garden center, but at 80 years of age I was willing to pay the $14 delivery fee to avoid that. Instead, I had to haul the 16 bags of compost -- two with holes -- to the location I had specified. Not at all happy. They ought to pay me $14 for moving the bags to where they were intended to be. UPDATE: The folks at BlackEarth responded to my complaints by refunding the delivery fee. The call was friendly and we discussed the issue of how the instructions were ignored. The opportunity to vent was most welcome. Great customer service deserves a boost in ratings! (PS: However, next year it is back to picking up my supply as needed at garden centers.) read more

We have been collecting our compostable garbage for a year now. It is easy and convenient and significantly reduces the amount of trash we create. This service is very reliable and affordable. The buckets they provide are secure and easy to roll out to the curb for pick up. I encourage you to do this. I have used Black Earth Compost for several years in a raised garden bed, lawn and gardens. They easily installed a raised bed which we have used for 7 years with their compost soil mix to grow vegetables. The compost is excellent. All of the vegetables thrive after planting and I am even able to grow celery which can be tricky. I use in on our lawn as a base to plant grass and in the gardens plus, window boxes. Ordered compost for my lawn and it came with whole seashell tons of trash like peoples labels from fruit and vegetables, plastic bags were even bette. The biggest part that is the scam is they mix the load with stone and they are all the same sizes not just random rocks. When I called no one answers then I sent an email and and they responded and asked me if I bought loam which was again deflecting from the problem. just for transparency purposes this was a few years ago but apparently my review never save. read more

We moved from a single family house in Salem to a large apartment complex. My wife reminds me on Sunday to put the Black Earth bin outside, and by Monday evening it's emptied, and our upstairs neighbor has brought our bin inside and left it by our door. Nothing Will grow in this soil. It consists of very large cement like chunks that don't break up. Filled many containers with it and ended Up dumping it all. Disappointing. read more

I really wanted to love Black Earth Compost. I have to say it is the better than Bootstrap but I did cancel my subscription to Black Earth. About 50% of the time I receive a "bins missing" notice and my compost doesn't get picked up. I keep my bins on the sidewalk and it is visible from the end of the street when you turn on to much street. There is no way it isn't visible from the street. I would have to throw the compost into my trash because it would get moldy if I waited until the next supposed pick up. It ended up not being worth the money since my compost wasn't being picked up every time. read more

I ordered 5 cubic yards of compost/soil blend for my raised beds. The load is full of glass, trash and rocks. It's also a very, very heavy soil that holds water for a long time leaving me to think it's got a lot of clay in it. I have never seen garden soil like this. I'm very frustrated. read more

Horrible Customer Service! I was originally really enjoying this service. They have not missed my pickups. They have a nice setup. What switched my opinion from 5 stars to 1 is one recent experience because of which I will stop recommending them now. I ran into a weird situation with my credit card that was used on their file (The credit card company disputed that transaction on my behalf). They sent me an email that I accidentally missed. 2 weeks later they deactivated my account with no more notifications (no calling, no more emails). I noticed a missed pickup and decided to report it. This is when I saw my account deactivated. I called to try to solve the problem. I think the business owner picked up the phone. This was a horrible experience with customer service. I was calm trying to figure out solution to the problem. He was extremely dismissive. I asked him why I didn't get a call about service cancellation. He said, "I have 10,000 people - I won't call everyone." Well, does everyone have issues causing you to cancel your service? If you really rely on email system so much even for these odd cases - make it robust. You could send out another email with subject "BLACK EARTH SERVICE IS BEING CANCELLED in x number of days." Anyhow, whoever it was talking on the phone -- I am sure you have many talents. If you are the business owner, I am sure you have many great skills running a business. If you don't want to deal with people, don't. It is better not to answer the phone than being grumpy with customers. Customers do not deserve this. I do not want to be a customer when I know that I won't be supported if some issue occurs. I want to feel comfortable contacting customer service if I have a problem with the service. This is what I pay money for when it comes to service. (big part of the money I pay for) Idea of the business is great, good prices. But this horrible customer service is the reason I will be canceling the service as soon as my annual payment runs out. read more

So far I am loving black earth. I switched from city compost (horrific) and loving the excellent service. If I have any questions or concerns I'm met with a timely and professional response. I haven't used their soil yet but excited for what's to come. I think I've only had one delayed service but it was during the holiday and i was notified immediately. Loving my switch. read more

I have had a great experience with Black Earth Compost. I am so glad we have this service available since moving to our new house. The customer service has been great. Oone time, a pickup was missed due to new employees and non-clarity on where to pick up the bin, which was immediately rectified and just today, I emailed since someone drove over my bin. I requested a new one and was told next time they are around, they will drop off a new bin. Also the bins are made of completely sustainable products, so can be recycled as well. I am hoping that more people will use this service to help the earth and I believe that as more people sign up, the pricing will also go down. read more

I am here to write a review about the raised bed soil i received this spring from black earth compost company. I ordered many yards of the soil this spring to fill a number of raised beds. The main reason i am writing this is because my soil has a lot of trash in it. It has a large amount of plastic including entire soda bottles. It has a lot of metal bits including entire beer cans. I has a huge amount of glass shards in it off all different sizes colors from i could not tell you how many things. It has broken pottery in it. It has broken ceramics like kitchen bowls in it. It also has a very large number of rocks some the size of a shoe. The compost part of the mix is very dry and compacted into balls that are as hard as concrete. Many of the compacted balls are the size of a grapefruit and will not break down or mix correctly in the soil. Much of the mix that is supposed to be single source sandy loam looks like it has a lot of clay in it and is also full of very large very hard very try chunks that can and will not support any roots. I will have to get a rototiller to be able to plant in this soil and will always have to wear puncture proof glove because of all the glass. I have been shoveling my soil one shovel full at a time into my wheelbarrow so i get a good look at each load. I have no idea if this soil contains good nutrients for my plants but i do know it has a lot of trash rocks and poorly mixed bits. read more

I really liked the ease of use of the online dashboard, and service was smooth for the most part. Also liked the wheelie bin as opposed to a black 5 gallon bucket. Someone always responded when I needed help. There were a couple missed pickups where the driver had indicated "bins were missing" which was not true, as the compost bin was always in the same spot on the front porch and impossible to miss. I wish BEC had been honest and notified customers about being shortstaffed or whatever the issue is that causes missed pickups. My pickup was missed 3 times in one week (having been rescheduled twice) and the drivers never showed up but selected "bins missing" each time. By the following Monday the compost had been sitting out in 90 degree heat for a week and I cancelled my service. They did refund my August payment which I appreciate. I am slowly learning that reliable service doesn't come cheap! read more

Black Earth Compost has been 100% easy to deal with for our family. Pick-ups are coordinated with our usual trash day. Sending email reminders to put out the bins is a great service and reminds me to put out all the bins. We used to have way too much garbage. Last week we had one bag of regular garbage, the Black Earth bin full and two recycling bins. That's still way too much recycling.
