I look back fondly on the Black Eyed Susan's before they moved to their new location and became a "tavern". I would have put it up against any NYC restaurant. The pickled vegetables to this day are still the best I have ever had and in the 2 years that I ate there dish after dish time after time the execution, quality and creativity shocked and impressed. What's in a name? Sadly in this case everything. The new restaurant and menu is fit to be called a tavern. Gone are the creative dishes, the service (2 of 6 of us got our food 10 minutes after the rest of the group) and the flawless execution (the pasta was terribly over cooked), but unfortunately the high prices are to stay (our fish was $40 a plate). But you can order $20 pizza. And it's just ok. Oh and now they have their liquor license. They didn't even trouble to print a new beer menu where they changed the taps. They did seem full and the new strategy seems more profitable. Table turn times are I am sure faster and check sizes probably haven't changed. On the positive side, i did enjoy the mussels. But it wasn't good enough to save the evening. read more

Clare C. was knowledgeable and nice server. Outside of tent was fine, though some road noise. Meatballs arrabbiata, nice kick, 3 were perfect start. Burrata pizza with broccoli raab and pepper was excellent thin crust small. Pasta and gnocchi were tasty and hot. Local Kane beer was excellent and glasses of red and rose were fine, not a good price. read more

One of our favorite places on LBI. Great food, friendly staff and good vibe. Another great experience with family on this trip. Shared some appetizers. Ricotta with sourdough was perfect as were the meatballs and mussels. Calamari was not as crisp as in the past...a little chewy. Main courses included the lobster gnocchi, chicken parmigiana, clam pie and tuna, all done to everyone's liking Had a guitarist playing last night which added to the relaxed vibe. Good song selection and perfect volume. We sat in the tent and weather was perfect. Cool breeze. Only nit is they had a fire pit outside which created a stronger than preferred smoky smell in the tent. Definitely a go-to when we vacation on LBI. read more

We came into listen to Jazz at the bar and ordered a few apps. The atmosphere is really cute with all the twinkling lights, cozy fireplace and welcoming staff. We had the mussels and let me tell you, you have not had mussels like these any where on the Island. It is a must try!! We did end up ordering dinner and the pork chop is to die for and my husband's chicken was sooo good. Amazing meal, we are now regulars!! My husband and I enjoyed an incredible meal at Black Eyed Susans recently. It was our first visit but definitely not our last. Reservations are a must as this is a very popular restaurant. We were able to book our desired date and time about a week out, but it was still fairly early in the season. I would imagine space is harder to come by as the summer months get into full swing. Everyone raves about the sourdough bread so we had to start with that, along with the olives, which were served warm. Next up was our first course, a tuna tartare special for my husband and the lobster gnocchi for me. Both dishes were delicious; the gnocchi was especially hearty. I was happy that I opted for something a bit lighter for my main course: scallops. These were large and perfectly seared and served over a medley of summer squash. Delicious! My husband had the tile fish, served with fennel and other veggies. I had a small bite and the fennel flavor was very potent which can be a good thing or bad thing depending on your feelings towards fennel. To finish the meal, we shared a lemon tart which was indeed tart, but balanced by some strawberry sorbet. We also had the housemade ginger beer, which was topped with coconut sorbet. This was unexpected, awesome, and something I'd like to play around with at home. Service was excellent and we enjoyed our experience all around. Can't wait for next time! read more

I want to be fair about this review, because I understand the struggles of restaurants during Covid. This restaurant does not stay open during the winter, so my experiences are from last fall & since re-opening 2021. Given that some restaurants on Long Beach Island are open for only a portion of the year, this one significantly jacks up the prices. So growing in you have to be aware of that. Also BES's menu is significantly abbreviated either due to Covid, or since moving across the street to the former plantation restaurant. We attempted to order off of this abbreviated menu, and both crabcakes and my mainstay $37 chicken were gone by 6:15pm. We were served warm water. The beverage menu is lacking any alcohol free choices, and we were not drinking on a Sunday evening. When I asked regarding gluten-free, I was told to look for GFs on the menu of which there are none. My cheeseburger & fries without a bun came out cold, another person in my party's bolognese pasta was cold & lacking sauce. No bread offered. The pizza is the stand out on their menu & I was told delicious. The beet salad was very unique although looked thrown together. The owner Ashley stands at the door but never once walked to any table to check how anything was. This in and of itself is neglectful (especially given the prices they charge). This has always been a go to for us, we always looked forward to them opening and enjoying a well constructed meal. But we will not be back after trying 3 different times in the last year. Primary reasons are- the nonsense of how to get a reservation, the prices, the ambiance and caliber of the food for those prices, inattentiveness of mgr/owner, lack of menu depth, lack of gf options, and overall mediocre experience. read more

We rate all restaurants as equals and don't buy into the whole, "look at us spending all this money" nonsense. 48 for a few scallops that you can buy a pound at 30? Sorry, we'll pass on the pretentiousness and look for places where people with too much money never go: where the quality of the food is first and foremost (yeah the 25 pizza, worth no more than 18-20 was very good, but c'mon). Hoping that good mom & pop, well-appointed (not gaudy and ornate) room restaurants don't get pushed out by the overly wealthy. read more

I was able to Black Eyed Susan's for the first and second times this week. We had such. Great experience I needed to share it. We were greeted and seated by a lovely woman (Ashley) that happened to be one of the owners I later found out. She was so nice and was so helpful. We asked her about her favorites right off the bat and she did not blink an eye. She walked us through the menu and it was clear she loved what she does... The food was great. The people are also a big reason to return. It is a great family run place with excellent food. Try the clam pizza. You will not regret it. Also do the gnocchi. We've been waiting several years to dine at BES... Overall it was a pleasant experience. I'm scoring it a 3 largely for the inattentive service and a meal of Cacio e Pepe that arrived cold and unfortunately the waitress was no where to be found to address it. First time here and oh my gosh, totally exceeded expectations. Our waiter Christian and his helper Carter were helpful, attentive and very friendly. Our appetizers of the whipped ricotta and the special clam pizza were outrageous. Can't wait to have our leftover pizza tomorrow! For dinner we had the shrimp and grits and the fish special which was tile fish. Both were delicious but the tile fish, off the charts amazing!!! For dessert we shared the chocolate bread pudding and although bread pudding is not our usual go to for dessert, we both thoroughly enjoyed it. Ashley stopped by our table numerous times to chat, refill our wine glasses and just make us feel like we were important customers. Service was fast. Food was great! I had the halibut special and my husband had the cacio e pepe. He didn't care for the cacio e pepe (just his tastebuds, nothing wrong with the food itself), but my halibut was excellent. No real kids menu. They have pizza and pasta with butter. Tried the whipped ricotta everyone raves about... taste like whipped ricotta lol. If ur into that, its good. My kids got pizza and they finished a whole pie just the two of them. I never thought Black Eyed Susans could be any greater than what I have consistently experienced at this unique and magnificent Long Beach Island restaurant. What we have always experienced is the consistent great Service and superior in every way food served in a tastefully decorated structure. However, on Friday we were lucky enough to experience their latest " pop up" dinners. The five coarse dinner was served in the upstairs special section of the restaurant. The ambience and table spacing was perfect. Each coarse was unique, incredibly tasteful and the timing of each coarse was in my experience the best I have experienced globally. The portions were generous and nothing was unfamiliar but presented tastefully and perfectly cooked. I plan on attending as many of these as I can in the future and I hope my schedule permits me to attend these very special events at this very special restaurant. read more

We were invited to a chefs tasting last night at Black eyed Susan and had a fabulous dinner! Each course was perfectly proportioned and paired with champagne or wine to compliment each course. We started with dirty martini shrimp, grilled scallops ratatouille , lobster spaghetti with chunks of lobster and roasted bone marrow with little neck clams, finishing with a carrot cake! Food/Service/Ambiance all a 5-star rating! You have so many options from eating at the bar, to the dining areas inside and outside and a very nice and quiet upstairs bar and seating area. Dustin the bartender and our waiter (we sat at the upstairs bar) was so phenomenal and so attentive! We had the whipped ricotta appetizer and the gnocchi with lobster and it was the best meal we have had down here in LBI this week!! WE went back this morning for coffee as they just purchased the cutest pink food truck that sits on the property and happened to meet the owner Ashley by chance. We were raving about the restaurant, food and experience as well as the staff and she sat down with us for about 20 minutes just shooting the breeze and telling us the history of the restaurant. STAY AWAY!!!! I live on Long Beach Island and had the worst experience with the front end staff. She was rude, condescending and treated customers like idiots. There are so many wonderful establishments on the island that there was no reason to stay. This party of six walked out and she didn't care. First time wife and I had dinner here, the hostess was attentive and we were seated immediately. Had several amazing appetizers, artichoke with an amazing dip , mussels ( sauce is incredible) highly recommend this appetizer. The bread is made in house and is incredible. Tuna with a tasty sauce and rice . Had martinis , made perfectly, must say the service was over the top , always checking to see if we needed anything, without being too aggressive. Alexa was awesome and will ask for her when ( not if ) we return!! My wife got the lamb special , cooked to perfection, excellent presentation too. I had the lobster gnocchi, generous portions of lobster the sauce it was amazing. Did not have room for dessert- I'm sure it would have been amazing as well. what an amazing restaurant... I just had a party of 9 there for dinner for my birthday. It was absolutely fabulous... the service was warm, knowledgeable, prompt. the food was out of this world... we started with apps and pizza for the table. moved onto entrees and then dessert. DO NOT SKIP dessert. truly impressive. no one in my party drank alcohol so cannot comment on the cocktails, but I'd venture to say they are excellent as well. We have eaten at the restaurant many, many times. The chef is great. Tonight, we had a reservation for two. Our babysitter backed out and we called, as a courtesy to add our child, to the reservation. We were put on hold and the manager answered and was EXTREMELY rude. We have eaten there tens of times!! WOW! She said the tables were 24 inches wide!! We eat at the finest restaurants in New York and New Jersey.... I have never been treated like this. We had been looking forward to trying this restaurant for months. Very impressed with how the food looked on social media, etc. Though the food did not disappoint and was extremely good, the overall experience was the exact opposite. The staff and servers were all WONDERFUL, competent, and friendly. One woman who was working that we were told was the owner, however, was anything but that. She was rude, abrasive, and honestly ruined what should have been a great experience. Multiple other people waiting along with us actually left because of how rude she was. As locals, for many generations to LBI, I am disappointed to say I do not know that we will be going back. read more

Holy moley. Hands down the best food on the island. Run. Don't walk. If you can only get a reservation at 4:30pm you take it. The food was phenomenal and so was the service and the drinks. Perfect 10 all the way around. I literally can't stop talking about this place and already planning my next trip down. Right off the bat get the ricotta app. It's so clutch. So was the massive pile of crispy shoe string French fries that were seasoned perfectly. We also got the octopus app which was amazing. The crab cakes special was the best I've ever had. And yes I can say that considering this week I had the crab cakes at the beach house and tuckers in Beach Haven. Neither even come close to Susan's. We had cordials for dessert because we were simply too full to have another course. I live in Union County NJ and am considering coming down for a random visit just to grab dinner here again soon.
