Pricey but legit. My German friend wants to move to Cobble Hill because of this place. He told me that the beer tastes like home, but the price reminds him of what it takes to survive in NYC. It's got a hipster vibe, a somewhat spacious back area with a big overhead for your football or whatever show. It has legit food like Black Forest Cherry Gateau which has been branded as True German food (by the same friend). More cherry would have made it better and the portion for $9 should be larger, in my non-german opinion. It had the weisswurst ($16) and my friend had wurstkorb with Freiburg taste ($12). My drink Weihenstephan hefe dunkel ($8) was good - fruity and light. Radeberger pilsner ($7) has been deemed real German beer and my friend says you can't go wrong with it. It tastes like home, he says. You can choose between .5L and 1L . Sauerkraut is fine but is slightly sweeter than what he's used to. Pretzel is good, but it didn't come with butter. Kaiser bun with wurstkorb is worth remember because he was amazed at its flavor and wondered if it was imported because it tasted like home. The weisswurst came in some sort of a broth. Remember to peel off the casing when you're eating the wursts! Has wifi. Nice but slow service. Quite dim. tasty food. read more

I am German and live in Brooklyn. Once in a while I am eager to get a German treat and tried this place twice but both times I left truly disappointed. They even overcook the Weißwurst (Bavarian breakfast sausage) which is the easiest dish of all. The pretzels are an insult to my country. Go there for a beer but if you're seeking good, authentic German food, try 'Zum Stammtisch' in Fort Greene (great service and the best pretzels you'll find in the area). read more

Black Forest still has it going on. Yes, it is very very similar to the place up on Fulton street, but that is 100% OK in my book, as I really loved living close to the OG location. They have virtually the same beer (save maybe one draught that is only available at the other store), and the same menu. The layout is similar as well, with bench style seating and a decently sized bar. They are super kid friendly which is nice for anyone who has kids or friends with kid, but still wants a 1/2 liter of German goodness. I personally go with a dunkle or kellerbier, unless I am in the mood for some night night juice, then that calls for the Aventinus (a liter of that is seriously dangerous). As for the food, the schnitzel looked legit (will def try next time), the sausage platter lets you chose your own four (go with the cheese brat), comes with a few sides, and is great for sharing, and the giant pretzel is...well a giant pretzel (also very good for sharing) Come here with friends, have a few liters of beer, and a large pretzel, you're guaranteed to have a good time. read more

Awesome beer garden in the neighborhood. They have a beautiful back outdoor space. Everything is no contact, you order and pay via the QR code which actually makes it easy for groups of friends and when you're done, you just get up and leave. Hands down THE BEST comfort food in Brooklyn. I've spent time living in Germany and can say that the food is all extremely authentic, delicious and portions are truly generous. Black Forest is a spacious beer garden in Cobble Hill. It feels new and clean, with rustic wooden interior. I went with my brother for a drink on a Saturday night around 11. It was quiet and we could actually hear each other talk. We got the special Black Forest Beer in the steins and it was pretty tasty. The bartender was nice and brought the beer around the bar to our two top table. It seems they have a good brunch crowd, and great Oktoberfest events - will have to go back! read more

Highly recommend this place for brunch. The vibe is very casual and relaxing with typical German picnic tables (the beer garden types). Food: spicy, Americanized version of German food. Flavors are enjoyable but not authentically German. Service: this is where I had my main issue. I'm vegan and mentioned this to the waitress, asked lots of questions about the menu, and I feel I was quite clear about what I needed. When I asked questions and she didn't know the answers I had to ask her to go to the kitchen to confirm, and we still ended up with a pretzel sitting in a pool of butter (which was puddled in the middle so I didn't see it until we were about halfway done). Understanding the basics about food preferences and allergies should be part of their training and if not, we should be able to expect they just listen to the customer and make some effort. Can't review the food as we never even had the chance to order. Went in on New Years Eve day and there was only one person working and several tables waiting. The server was really hustling but it was impossible for him to handle the counter top area and all the tables. We ended up leaving after waiting at least 15 minutes without even the sign of getting water or placing an order. I'd like to go back and actually try it, but management would need to ensure they have adequate staffing, especially for a holiday. read more

Where to start... I was excited to see this place open up on Smith Street, because there's a constant rotation of businesses here. Also it was something different for a change, as in, not a Thai or "American" spot with nothing worth paying for. Cynicism aside, I'm glad they're here. Not sure if it's intended to look like a beer hall or a restaurant, which I guess is fine because it can accommodate both big parties and small. The food here has been great, I've enjoyed everything so far - which has consisted of 3 different sausages. They were great and came with a massive amount of fries. Would have preferred bigger sausages (heyoooo) and less fries, but I'm ok with the portions - they're fair for the price. Pretzels are awesome. Two mustard types, also a huge plus. Beer selection is great, lots of German/Bavarian beer to choose from. 3 size options as well - I think they were .5L,1L and a Boot for those of you looking to sleep under the table. Service is my one real negative point, it's slooooww. As in really damn slow. Some other reviews bring it up, so I don't want to drag on with it, but it's definitely in need of improvement. The second time here we waited about 15-20 minutes just to get a menu, was almost ready to walk out. This place lives up to the Black Forest name. The food is almost dead on, like you were back in Germany. I got the Jagerschnitzel and it came with spatzle and mushroom gravy. You get two very good sized portions and the gravy is fresh made. They do have an assortment of German beers also and they come in the half liter glasses. Love this place! Perfect venue to meet up with friends during COVID. For ordering, they use the QR code where you order it on your phone and then they bring it out. We spent about 2 hours here and ordered a few rounds of drinks and the sausage platter that turned out to be more than enough food for the 4 of us. For drinks, one friend stuck to beer, and the other 3 of us experimented with various cocktails. Starting with the spiked apple cider, it was delicious and warm. You get to choose what to spike it with! Perfect for a wintery Saturday of outdoor COVID dining times. Later on we transitioned to Irish coffees, which were also tasty. Came here for food and a few drinks on a rainy Saturday night a few weeks ago with the husband. Really enjoyed the food - was simple but good. I had the pork Schnitzel with spicy kale salad and spatzel, husband had the Weisswurst and said it was also good. Service was mediocre. Our food came out promptly, but we only ever saw our server to take our order and to drop the check, which he did while we were in the middle of eating. Totally understanding of waiters wanting to close out, but he did this shortly after we received food without even asking how it was. Meanwhile he still had a large group at a communal table that was there for another 30 minutes, so just seemed really unnecessary and a bit rude? The absolute worst service I've had in many a year. We were there for more than 2.5 hours, the drinks took an hour, the food more than that and it came out, for a group of 8, 1 or 2 dishes at a time. From the time the first dish was served to the last, more than an hour to hour and fifteen. There were never more than two of us eating at a time. They comped us drinks and then left off half of them forgetting what we ordered. I made sure to tell anyone new coming in to run for the hills. Food is decent quality, the beer list is good, however I feel this place is a little bit over priced. Also, I visited this place on a Friday night and didn't have the best experience. Black Forest is a consistent spot for good food, service, drinks, and sports! The staff is attentive and hardworking. With a German-themed menu, the burger and their homemade mustard is a must-try! Their original cocktails are also wonderful and their Bloody Mary might be the best I've ever had (and I'm not usually a fan)! Obviously the boots and pitchers of beer are a staple as well. Its a little ridiculous 18% tip for ordering on my phone and someone bringing my plate. I decided after my meal I wanted dessert. Took 20 minutes for someone to give us water and take our order, another 30 minutes to deliver one appetizer (six chicken wings which were cold), and another 30 minutes to get two entrees. During the wait, our waiter did not bother to check in to see if we need more water / explain why the food was late. We managed to get a hold of another waitress who informed us that the kitchen is too busy serving another party. I went here and went out of my way to confirm the ingredients to the menu of certain items on the menu. Upon confirmation of the menu description of the manner in which they prepare the large pretzels I ordered one because it said it didn't list any milk products or meat in its preparation. Upon receiving the pretzel I noticed that what seemed to be oil on the pretzel was not oil but some sort of butter. The waiter said they would strike it off the bill considering my disdain at the fact they don't list that as an ingredient and then upon the coming of the bill reneged on his promise because his manager said I as the customer should've double checked upon my order if the item was prepared the way it said it was prepared. I was then forced to pay for the meal I didn't eat! This place is very upsetting! read more

An email I wrote to BFB. They didn't even respond :( Dear Black Forest, We came to BF on Smith St on Friday night (1/25) for dinner. We live just around the corner and hadn't visited in a while. Our dinner was terrible! We ordered chicken schnitzel with French fries and kale, and the ghoulish with spaetzle. To begin with the dishes came out over a half hour after we ordered and everything was freezing cold. The goulash was mostly carrots, onions, and peppers, and overly sweet, thick and mushy; the spaetzle was gooey; and everything else was under seasoned and bland. The cold food aside, nothing tasted fresh. The waiter was cordial but seemed unable to manage the situation himself. The manager seemed surprised, stating that everything was just made. This obviously was not the case. The manager offered to remake everything but by that point -nearly 45 minutes after we arrived-we were so turned off we paid for our beer and left. I am writing not just to complain but to let you know -from our experience over the last year-that the quality has dropped dramatically. It's a shame because earlier on we really liked going to BF. When we first sat down we were so skeptical about the food. But once my boyfriend and I got our food it was beyond our expectations. It was fast service and great food. We were very pleased. I'm a former 5 yrs restaurant manager in Manhattan and he is a 15 yr Chef, he was impressed with the currywurst but to his opinion it was a bit strong, and the spatzle wasn't good but he felt that the gravy was very good to be paired with the garlic mash.
