German food here is delicious!!! My friends and I ordered the $32 sausage platter called die wurstplatte and $15 Waldschrat (flatbread with mushrooms, sour cream, and caramelized onions). We each ordered a drink. I got the Schofferhofer grapfruit. :) Free wifi! Not gonna lie! Service was slow because they had one waiter waiting all the tables for the restaurant (inside and out) on a Saturday evening. It is also pricey. Make sure you are not in a rush to leave! They have clean restrooms and have a lot of space and seats. Will come back if I get a chance next time. read more

Great German beer and food in a cozy safe beer garden, The garden is well divided to give each group of guests a safe and comfortable place to eat and drink with plexiglass- dividers and over head heaters. Dogs are allowed in the garden which is entertaining and sweet. I was for the food, High ratings for the Black Forest burger and corn on the cob. The ultimate burger was ok, nothing to write home about. I'd like to see it dressed up in a pretzel bun with a bit more seasoning. The only thing I would not recommend is the jerk wings, should be renamed paprika wings. If you want jerk chicken get it from a Jamaican not a German, these have no spice, no heat. Maybe try regular Buffalo wings instead. One last comment about online in-restaurant ordering. Right now there are is no true wait staff just bartenders, host, and busboy. So it's hard to get something like extra napkins. They need to add messaging to the ordering app. It would also be nice to be able to keep a running tab so you can continue to order if you want another drink or food without paying, getting taxed and tipping each time you want something. We placed our full order to avoid that and ended up getting our appetizers and food together. Otherwise a great experience for eating out during a pandemic. We'll be back for sure. read more

Unless you are looking to just drink a bunch of German beer, don't come here. The food is bad enough, and the online-only ordering system is so goofy and unnatural, that really the only reason to come here is if you're looking to drink a liter of German beer. And, to be clear, this is German beer that you could be buying at a grocery store or bodega. They have ~rarer~ German beers here, but the prices are so bad on those that you're better off sticking to the more common ones. So, to recap, you should come here to drink German beers that you could get at a grocery store, but poured into a larger glass than you probably have at home. I get it, I like to drink liters of beer too. And that's something you can do here. But don't let that trick you into thinking that any other part of coming here will be good. read more

Had dinner and drinks at Black Forest Brooklyn on Saturday night. A cool space to watch a big game, but the prices are a bit high and I wasn't crazy about the food. Quality: Loved the large selection of old world style beers on the menu. The Risenbrezel was excellent, though needed beer cheese. I was disappointed in the two Sausages I tried. The Bratwurst was okay, but the Cheese Brat was very dried out and I didn't enjoy the flavor. Quantity: Large portions for both food and beer. Value: $7-$11 for Draft Beers. $12 for the Risenbrezel. $6 for a Sausage. $6 for Side Mashed Potatoes. Ambiance: Black Forest Brooklyn is a German style beerhall in Cobble Hill. With a bar area in front, long tables in the back, and an outdoor patio it offers tons of space for big parties. They also had a huge screen pulled down playing the football game. Came here for brunch when other places were full so we had to scout around for a restaurant that can accomodate 6 + 1 baby. We found BFB randomly and it was empty inside. It wasn't a good sign, but it's best to give a place a fair shot before confirming. So.... yeah, not a good sign confirmed. To start things off, the good thing we had was the big ole pretzel. It was soft, it was chewy, it came with two sauces I couldn't decide which I liked more. Majority of us got a cup of coffee and all of us agreed that it was weak and tea would've been a better choice in flavor and in caffeine delivery. I decided to get the German breakfast because what more can define what German food is other than a spread they listed as German Breakfast? Lo and behold, the cutting board that came out the kitchen for me was decorated with slices of cheese and deli meat, a hard boiled egg, some sliced fruit with nutella, a mini pretzel, and a croissant. The only thing I cared for on that dish is the nutella. You'd think I'd say the pretzel is the star of the plate but nope, it was rock hard. WHY? I have no idea. The rest of the group looked like they didn't like their food either so maybe brunch isn't BFB's forte. We are a black family who came into the restaurant with 5 empty tables. We were asked to sit at three bar with our 14 year old. We waited for what felt like a lifetime An angry waitress asked for our order. When I said that I needed to be served so that I could make it to an appointment, she said "if you are in any kind of a hurry, I suggest that you don't eat here". It wasn't said in a polite way and she repeated it 3 times. She walked away in frustration when we stopped her on her 4th repeat. The manager came for our order. Excellent Beergarden with great ambiance, ideal for an early dinner, even with children. They have games as well. The courtyard at the back is quiet and spacious, and very clean. Really nice. This is my kids' preferred dinner spot on Smith and I'm always thrilled to take a break from burgers. Black Forest's schnitzel and shoe string fries can't be beat and I appreciate their fair prices at a time when it feels like cost of a dinner out sky rocketed everywhere else. The back garden set up is lovely, with individual booths which have ceiling fans. Other menu favorites for me have been the pretzel and heirloom tomato salad, plus beer selection of course. read more

Very disappointing. We purchased tickets for the last night of Octoberfest. The ambiance was nice and the servers tried there best, however it was just slammed and not enough workers. We arrived early for our 6pm reservation and were told to sit anywhere. (even though we reserved indoor seating) Many tables and places were dirty as the staff just didn't have enough time to clean. We waited 90 min for a pretzel, and didn't want to order anything else. We left to have dinner else where. The drinks were good but again, they should have anticipated the crowds and hired enough people. read more

They have a good happy hour special that I was too late for but would plan on checking it out next time! There's also really great alcohol options. This spot is great! Their beer and ciders are pretty tasty and it's a great environment as well. They have some games around to play, which is always fun and made us stay for a lot longer! We came here because our friend recommend we go for good, hefty German brunch. It was one of those days where we wanted to eat heavy and drink heavy - oh, and it was the first meal of the day also! We started off with a 1L of beers and those did just the trick to get a little buzz ;) just what we needed to start off the day. I loved the casual, biergarten type vibe mixed with the trendy NYC vibe. My buddy recommended the Bratwurst Gravy and Biscuits, but since that plate especially was really filling, I decided to get the Wurstkorb with the classic Bratwurst and fries, and split it half and half with my bud so we'd get to try both plates. The food was really good! Great quality German selections and plenty of food to go around. The service is what took the rating down for me. Our food all came out at very different times, which because we waited, all our foods except for the last plate to come out got cold. Additionally, our friend had requested several things multiple times that ended up never being served to us, and we caught the server multiple times just casually chatting with his coworkers by the bar. I feel like there are more and more German beer halls in Brooklyn every year, but Black Forest aims for more of a polished, sitdown vibe (though they do have the traditional picnic tables in the back room). Sat at the bar so service was quick. Didn't have any of their food, but they have a ton of options and they're all reasonably priced, for the most part. I had the Rothaus Tannenzapfle beer (which Black Forest says they're the first US restaurant to serve). Very German tasting, for better or for worst. Crushable, light, not great. Lots of other beer options, as well as cocktails and whiskeys (including the Aventinus whiskey beer). Cocktails are also relatively inexpensive. No word on when they'll have the backyard open yet, but hopefully in time for this summer! read more

Look no further if you are in the mood for some excellent german food. As a critical german myself, I often get disappointed by "German" restaurants in NY, where the food tastes like it got heated up out of a can. Not at Black Forest! The food is excellent..the menu provides a nice variety of different, homemade dishes, even vegetarian sausages, and the staff is upbeat and friendly. Great beer list as well. Stopped in Saturday evening, plenty of space and quickly seated. (party of three - including a 3 year-old.) We started with the smaller ($4) pretzel. Tasty - good mustards. Then we ordered two Wurstkorb - one with the traditional style sausage, and the other with the spicy cheese inside. (These are not listed on the website, so unfortunately, I am unable to properly name them. We also had a side of spatzle. And I had a .5L Hofbrau Dunkel (super yum). Both sausages were excellent, the fries were more than plentiful and delicious, the sauerkraut fantastic (a serious stand out to me), and the kaiser roll was very good. Also, the spatzle was quite tasty - sometimes I find them too dry. This one comes with a jus of some sort with mushrooms. My daughter thought called it mac and cheese, but also enjoyed the jus. I think we would try subbing a side (if possible) in for one of the fries in the future because we just couldn't eat them all. The only slight negative was the service, but for me, not enough to take a star away. Many groups were drinking (the whole group), so if we were all drinking, I think we would not have minded it being a little slow. Also, the server was friendly and quick to help, but needed to be called - no checking in. Again, not terrible to me, but something to be aware of in case that would bother you. Either way, we will definitely be coming back and look forward to trying more of the menu. read more

First time at their new location and they didn't disappoint! We shared the sausage platter which came with four different kinds that varied in taste and texture. The sweet mustard complimented the platter nicely! We also ordered the "Flamnkuchen" which is basically a thin crust pizza. To our surprise, we wanted more and more of this German twist on flatbread. We opted for the "original" with a combination of sour cream, smoked bacon and caramelized onion!! The only improvement I would like to see during my next visit is a fresh Latke. I'm not saying they weren't good but they weren't crisp. I'm guessing they sat out for a bit before they were brought to our table. My husband and I came here for brunch on a Saturday morning while visiting Brooklyn for a wedding. We tried Cafe Luluc first, which is obviously popular and better known, but ultimately decided to give this place a try, even though it was completely empty when we arrived. The decor is all clean, European lines, with bar stools straight out of IKEA, but the reclaimed wood of the window booths and exposed brick in the dining area give it some rustic interest and keep the place from feeling too sterile. It's open and airy, with displays of flowers that give a welcoming feel. We started with coffee, which was very good, and locally roasted in Dumbo. One look at the menu assured us that we were in the right place - my husband the bratwurst gravy and biscuits, and I got the rolled omelette with smoked salmon, caramelized onions, and goat cheese. My meal also came with a delicious side salad, with the perfect mustardy vinaigrette to accompany it, rosemary roasted potatoes, and a giant piece of rye bread with some kind of berry jam that I didn't get the name of, but it was tart and delicious. At first, I was peeved there was no butter, but the jam was so flavorful and tart, that butter would have been a dulling accompaniment. I think this place is definitely worth a try, if you don't mind a "less happening" atmosphere. Also, looks like it would be fun for dinner or drinks, as they have an extensive beer menu. read more

Though we have done so maybe 3-4 times in NJ or upstate NY, last night was our first time doing sit-down, table service dining in NYC since lockdown. We chose #BlackForestBrooklyn on Smith St for the experience, and couldn't have done better! Beautiful outdoor garden, VERY safely organized with good spacing and plexi dividers. So much more enjoyable than "curbside" dining would have been I think - no buses, cars, ambulances, etc whizzing past as you try to enjoy a meal. And the FOOD! I think it was even BETTER than the last time we dined there. read more

Nothing beats GIANT beers and a massive multi brat platter with the most delicious mashed potatoes and garlic kale. Yes. I said Kale as a highlight. It's THAT good. The place always has a nice crowd, and depending on the time of day you might see a lot of fellow beer drinker parents(such as myself) with kids in the back. So super kid friendly. We were headed for a different brunch destination on Christmas when when we passed this place. We liked the looks of the menu and it did not disappoint. We were seated right away, had yummy brunch drinks (mimosa and Bloody Mary, with plenty of spice), and shared a traditional Flammkuchen--the German equivalent of pizza, eggs/schnitzel dish, and chicken sausage, all fantastic. Solid spot near Atlantic Avenue and 10 minute walk to the Barclay's Center. This is a very informal spot with lots of tables and a good sized bar. Groups - check, families - check, cheap - check. Noise level if it is full, high, otherwise, average. Service can be a bit uneven when they are slammed. I thought the food was good in terms of the variety and it was carefully prepared. Service was friendly. Once you put your order in, stuff flies out of the kitchen. You can make a reservation online and if you are going to the Barclay's Center or if it is a Saturday night make a rez! The goulash was good if a little salty. The schnitzel was also good. Flatbread- solid and the overall portions are enough for two on most entrees. The beer selection is outstanding, wine, solid. Really fun evening here with colleagues after work. We arrived early and had great beer reco's and great service from the bartender. As the place filled up, the great service didn't abate: when a later arrival who doesn't drink needed something, the bartender told me, "order a lemonaid off the app and I'll make something up." What arrived delighted our tired, needing-a-pick-me-up compatriot. That was a nice touch. Only feedback? Made a reservation for outdoor cabin on Resy, but when we arrived, due to staffing shortages, the cabins were not open. It would have been good to know that before leaving home, but I understand that with folks out sick we're all doing the best we can. We had the most delicious dinner in a heated booth.
