Yes I'm kind of picky, but it was overcooked and dry (one side looked brown like a pancake that they had folded the ingredients into). I did tell the server. She felt badly but didn't offer a break or a new one. Hubby's meat lover type omelette was slightly better perhaps due to the melted American cheese inside. We both upgraded from home fries to fruit cups, and that too was disappointing. Were the exception of grapes, you couldn't tell which fruit you were eating. I'll grant you it's early in the season but pre-cut fruit sitting in watery liquid is bound to lose flavor and texture. I'm glad so many people like it, and don't want to yuck their yumm, but we won't return.

You can't compare this place with motel 6 so expect to pay a few extra dollars. I consider the price to be thrifty for what we received. We ventured over to the Tavern next door for a drink. Same decor as the main building. Excellent service at the Tavern. I got a hamburger and it was perfectly cooked. We had a great stay thank you for having us.

But on this day, I thought to myself, "Self, I really hate making that busy-as-hell left turn on South Broadway in Salem. What if we took a journey to the Andover location instead?" And so it was. I enter this cozy little restaurant carefully tucked against a slightly submerged parking garage. Although, I probably shouldn't say "little" because the interior was noticeably larger than its Salem counterpart. It's also noisy AF in there when it gets busier than a New York subway. So naturally, I ordered my usual to-go (a Country Classic with an extra egg and hashbrowns for those who don't know). Only it wasn't *quite* ready on time. Which, to be fair, is kind of a minor point. Thing is, they have to shout your name whenever your order is finally ready. This in and of itself can prove to be quite the challenge when bellowing atop the already roaring crowd of customers impeding the otherwise accessible pickup shelves. I'll do my best to describe the interior since I wasn't really able to take pictures. But try to imagine an L-shaped dining area with the longest part hosting a row of countertop seats facing the windows. Beyond that sits a rather modest dining area with a few more tables. Next to that sits the gender neutral restrooms. It's strange and cramp, particularly when the place is packed tighter than a sardine can. Sufficed to say, I'm not much a fan of the interior design here. Being the partial recluse that I am, I offer the following best practice for a place so riotous: mobile order that shiz, cuh! Seriously. I had to put in my noise cancelling earbuds to appease my misophonia. The good news is....the food is still awesome. The eggs? Creamier than crème fraîche. Taters? Eh, I don't why...but these seemed way more seasoned the very first time I tried them. Fortunately, they actually pair rather well with their refined version of ketchup. The bacon? Well...let's just say I wish it were served well done. Not sure if I'm able to request that. But I'll scope out my options next time and get back to you all. That's it though. Nice place, WAY easier to get to than its Salem counterpart, but a bit too cramp and noisy for my taste which means....I'll likely ever dine in here. It's all good though, because I'm still giving Crack'd Kitchen & Coffee in Andover 4 Country Classics with all the fixins out of 5.

Not a flat layer of egg with meat and cheese thrown on top that gets folded in at the last minute. When I cut into it with my fork, the insides shouldn't fall out due to lack of cheese. Potato pancakes are mashed potatoes crisped on the grill. Weird. Hubby was equally unimpressed with his order, so the search for a perfect breakfast continues.

FAMILY NOT WELCOMED! Hi there! I have been going to the Black Forest Cafe for over 10 years & travel miles just to go there over the years and we have had enjoyable memories. But for a while we would experience cookies that wouldn't be cooked all the way that would be doughy in the center, yuk! But we would bring them back so we could get ones that were cooked. But for some reason our good memories had brought us back again & again the last few times we gone the cookies have been really dry & salty! They recently renovated the interior this year which it really needed & it looks great especially the upstairs where we have been going to eat the past times we have gone, this time we were headed up there when my fiance was headed up there with our son when a lady who worked there TOLD US OUR BABY SON WAS NOT ALLOWED UP THERE! I said seriously? Then she said that no one 16 and under was not allowed up there! She then proceeded to show us down stairs & also told us to sit down stairs in an area that isn't pleasant to eat in due to the tiny area with hard chairs I then proceeded to tell her we had been going there for years & how I would never come back there again after telling us our baby who is well behaved wasn't allowed in the upstairs dinning room. This is a place that my mom would take me for most of my child hood who we also recommended to others for there pastries. This was a place that I was now taking my mom to also my fiance & now a second generation, our son. We left but I then went back into ask for the owner to that REALLY RUDE LADY who in 10 plus years who I have never seen once told me she was the owner so I asked her are you the new owner she said she has owned it for 27 years I told her I have never been treated so rudely she told me it was due to safety I then told her she should fix the problem she then told me that 16 & under was their solution to the problem of banning them from the upstairs! I left the Black Forest Cafe & Bakery for my last time. So if you go to this place BEWARE! for a place that who owner doesn't care about valued costumers because she will be extremely rude & loud to you in front of other costumers & which isn't a family oriented place! read more

The food is fine - not great, not bad. And the service is usually good. My issue with this place has to do with all the hidden charges. I ordered a cheeseburger- already $13 and and was asked what kind of cheese I wanted. Of the three offered, I chose Brie. The waitress did not inform me that there was an extra charge for Brie. I ordered ice tea and was asked if I wanted regular or raspberry and I chose raspberry. Again an additional charge. Then the waitress asked if I wanted a refill of my tea and I said yes, and I was charged for an additional drink. Seriously?? In my decades of eating out, refills of coffee, iced tea and sometimes even sodas are free. All the waitress had to do was inform us of the extra charges. It felt like it's a sneaky way to pad the check. Next time I eat there I will ask the waitress to tell me the exact price of every single thing I order. NEVER AGAIN! THEY DO NOT CARE WHAT SO EVER ABOUT CUSTOMER HEALTH!!!! I am profoundly disgusted with the customer service and will not be giving my business to the Black Forest Café again. I came in hoping to provide my friends with a healthy and delicious lunch, but could not even place the order because I was rudely shut down and informed that no precautions or measures would be taken to create a nut-allergy free meal. I will not give a local business my money if they cannot even find it within themselves to wipe down the grill in order to keep customers safe and out of the ER. That is a blatantly disrespectful way to run a business and shows complete disregard for customers with common dietary restrictions. read more

This is the spot I bring family and friends to whenever we are looking to go out to breakfast! The homemade cinnamon roll is always a hit, and even though I can't have it since I'm GF, everyone who can digest gluten is obsessed with it!! They do have GF options, but it's not specified on the menu. They have GF toast and a dedicated grill section for pan fries. French toast is very good here for being GF. The staff and the vibe of this place is really what makes it special to me. The collaboration between all the servers and staff sets this place apart from the rest. I was there this past weekend, and it was nice for a familiar server also recognized me as a familiar face. I was also made aware of a contest to see how many eggs they cracked in a week- and I took a guess and ended up winning a $50 gift card! Made my day! Meaning to click on someone's check-in or something, I ended up clicking on this diner instead. I read the menu, saw they had one of my all time favorites (the hash & eggs), then I was instantly sold! Naturally, the hash & eggs lived up to their rep. Cookies offers both canned and house made hash (though I almost always choose the former for personal reasons) and the homefries were well seasoned and crispy on the outside. Unfortunately, as with most breakfast places, they can't seem to butter toast very well. A minor inconvenience, at worst. My recommendation would be to maybe sub this for a bagel with cream cheese (note to self), unless you're one of those jam on toast types. In which case, have at you. The coffee was decent. Obviously a breakfast blend that's not too bold. But at least it didn't taste like tea. Now, I gotta talk about the layout real quick, because it's rather unique. You may have noticed in the outside photo that there's two entrances. That's because the one on the right is meant for handicapped accessibility (hence the ramp). I have to say...that's rather thoughtful of them. Of course, given the inordinately high volume of senior citizens residing in NH, why am I even surprised? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Also, the interior is interesting because it has these two sections; the main dining area where the restrooms are also located, and a smaller back area with a mini bar and a few other tables. If you manage to be seated at one of the tables along the middle of both areas, there's this open window where you can view the mini bar and kitchen. This is also where the servers operate from if you're sitting at said tables. I hope I described that accurately, since taking photos of the interior without accidentally capturing a few faces was next to impossible. So, would I return? Certainly, if I ever manage to convince the wifey to join me (she's not what you'd call an early riser). The food here is very diner-esque (IYKYK) and I dare say rivals that of The Good Place on Lowell road. I'm giving Cookies Diner 4 plates of savory hash & eggs out of 5.
