As promised, I was contacted by the Black Lapel manager regarding my review; it is therefore only fair that I post an update. I will say two things: 1. I was told, contrary to what I wrote in my initial review, that Black Lapel indeed does have the ability to modify their pre-configured templates somewhat when building a suit. This allows them to achieve a better fit than those clothiers who are forced to select from their existing templates only. 2. Black Lapel fully addressed the concerns I had about my suit (and shirt), and did so in a courteous and efficient manner. I now have possession of a suit that fits properly, and in fact exceeds my expectations of how a made-to-measure suit should look. In fact, I would say the fit approaches that of a full custom piece, and at a fraction of the price. I can only add that after my experience I would not hesitate to buy additional suits (and shirts) from Black Lapel. They have demonstrated that they deliver a quality product; even more important, when something does go wrong they can be relied on to address it in a more-than-satisfactory manner. I now have ~15 shirts, 6 suits, 2 blazers and an overcoat from Black Lapel. They're great. I've been a customer for about two years and I wear the clothes daily to work. The quality of both the materials and the tailoring is exceptional; none of the clothes are showing any wear and tear. The customer service is exceptional. I've been working with Chris C. since the very beginning and I consider him a friend at this point. In fact, on my first visit to the showroom, I'd had a very long day and Chris stepped away for a moment and came back with a glass of brown liquid. To this day when I order new clothes, I have them delivered to the showroom, as it gives me a reason to stop in and chat with Chris and to see what new products Black Lapel has on the floor. Chris has also helped me with style tips and his attention to detail is far greater than mine - he has suggested slight alterations to clothes that fit well to my eye. In the end, you get clothes that are tailor made for you, that are high quality for less than a poorly fitting off the rack suit from Bloomingdales or Saks or Hugo Boss would cost. This is a no brainer. The other thing I love is the seasonal changes to the products and the limited edition product that Black Lapel has in periodically - I purchased an amazing tan summer suit earlier this year and I'm eyeing the dark green cashmere overcoat right now. Long story short, if you want to look good, you enjoy top notch customer service and you enjoy building relationships and making new friends, this is the place to go. read more

I'm updating my review based on a few more interactions with this business. In essence, they can only accommodate an extraordinarily narrow range of body types; it's made to measure in name only. If you care about a really good fit, you'll need to go elsewhere. For everyone else, you can get an equivalent product for a lot less money by going to SuitSupply and using a good tailor. read more

I've ordered three suits form them. The quality is amazing, the fit (after a few tweaks) is perfect. On a recent order I made an error in my measurements. They could have very easy just filled the order as listed and I would have had to deal with a return. Instead a rep reaches out to me having spotted the error before proceeding. They were super cool and made the needed corrections and I got my suit in a few weeks and it fit perfect. Best part was they didn't make me feel bad or even make a big deal about my error. They just made the suggestions, left it to me to make the decision and proceeded after we figured out the best solution. He suit even arrived on time despite the time delay correcting my ordering error. You really do have to try them out. Their customer service is too notch. read more

I just had exactly the same experience as Mark B. from IL. I expect to see a lot more of the same type of reviews coming in the near future. I ordered a charcoal suit and was immediately disappointed in the packaging. It was horrible. It looked like a 7 year old put it in the box. Then came the real surprise. Apparently that same 7 year old is also responsible for the stitching. This person used the same silver/white stitching that was used for my monogram inside the jacket for all of the button holes on the entire jacket. It's a charcoal suit. I have no idea how that could possibly happen in the first place but then to actually ship it to the customer. I just received the replacement and the stitching in the lapel is way too tight and the material is puckered, as is the material where the sleeves join the jacket. I was also never informed of Black Lapel being acquired by another company. I spent months trying to decide where to go for a well made suit. That was a waste. In the eighties I purchased all of my suits at a JC Penny in Madison, WI. They employed professionals and carried every level of suit to fit almost every need. Sadly, those options are long gone. I guess it's off the rack from here on out. read more

TL:DR - Better option than Men's Wearhouse type shops, department stores, etc. Typical customization options. Would recommend Oliver Wicks for more options, better customization, and better service. Not a replacement for bespoke tailoring. They are a good option if you're looking for a suit, but there are a couple of better options (and MANY worse ones!). Expect to take a couple of attempts to nail down the fit if you order online. Be aware that most of the customer service folk (concierge, stylists, etc.) are more designers with pamphlet level knowledge of tailoring, so I would recommend getting alterations done by a local knowledgeable tailor. Keep in mind that while they are a better choice than off the rack at like a Men's Wearhouse or department store, if you want something customized beyond the standard customizable options that most "custom" shops/sites offer, this isn't the place. Their production process is also pretty industrialized, and they don't like to veer off of it. For example, I had ordered a suit and a couple of days later wanted to change some minor options (the type of lining and color of accent stitching). They weren't really able to accommodate this, even to prevent a situation where I could just return the suit and reorder with the new specifications I wanted i.e. a lose-lose for both of us. Their communications can also be pretty slow at times. They are a growing company, and I hope they can adapt and survive in a crowding industry. read more

Don't believe all the fake reviews. I fell for it too. Normally I would've done this online, but I was serious about getting it right when ordering a blazer. I went in personally and the stylist took about 30min to do customer measurements. I was very excited about this. I got the garment back and this is worse then the scam site u order off from China. The blazer came back not even close to my measurements. I kept asking how's this possible when they took custom measurements in person ...and I was trying to be courteous and blame it on the factory they use in China. Marcus insists it wasn't the factories problem but the stylists prob. That kept trying to downplay the severity of the issue..trying to say it was a little bit off...to probe my case I m submitting the pic. That doesn't make sense because she took custom measurement on everything. They tried to make it up by telling me to take pictures. They say they can remake the blazer from scratch based on several pictures of me wearing the blazer. They agreed to do this at their cost. I was thinking they couldn't get it right with custom measurements in person but they insist they can get it right if they see a couple pics. This co is a joke. They wanted to waste more of my time prob because they thought I would put up a review like this. I appreciate they tried to make it up, but I'm reviewing based on the final product. I've tried numerous custom clothiers (Indochino, Label, among others) and while they seem great at first, it wasn't until i tried Black Lapel that i noticed what a huge difference having a reliable clothier is. The first thing i noticed that was different was their attention to detail, they are miles ahead of other companies. I worked mostly with Valentino, and his commitment to achieving the perfect fit while explaining all the small things that go into making the perfect suit was both helpful and appreciated. They care about their customers and took the time to answer all my questions and insure i was happy with the end result. These guys absolutely fucking nailed it! It is hard to believe I bought a suit online that looks this ridiculously good on me, but the wedding pictures don't lie. My Cool Grey 3-piece arrived on-time and fit exceedingly well right out of the box, based off measurements I supplied with the help of a friend and the videos on their site. They offer a $75 credit in case you need an alteration after you receive it, which I did not need since all I did was steam the shipping wrinkles out, slip into it, and roll up to my wedding looking like a goddamn BOSS. The quality and details of the suit are impressive, and the degree to which I was able to customize the details means this suit is MINE, baby (that and the monogram on the inside pocket). The sky blue lining and accent stitching on the last (functional, BTW) sleeve button look so freaking pimp it hurts! Its hard to quantify the emotional attachment I have for this suit, but i don't think "love" is hyperbolic in this case. I recently purchased a custom suit from Black Lapel as I was tired of off-the-rack overpriced but unfitting suits. I need to say, I was skeptical about buying a custom suit online, especially about providing exact measurements without tailor consultation. However, I went on to give it a try. I chose my suit, selected those minor details that usually annoy salespeople even from the best luxury boutiques, and asked for help about measurements. I placed my order on Sunday. On Monday morning, Black Lapel's concierge Georgina got back to me to check all measurements in detail. Around three weeks later I received my suit. Quality and finish were extraordinary, even if compared with suits from the top Italian clothiers. However, fit was not perfect, so I went to my local tailor, who made some alterations to the trousers. A couple of days later, Black Lapel credited me back the amount I had spent with my tailor. As for the jacket, it was too tight, so what? Black Lapel told me: No problem, just give it to a charity foundation, and we'll make another jacket for free according to the necessary adjustments. As you can see from my profile, I generally don't leave reviews. This is an exception. The suit and service of these guys are beyond just exceptional. I've purchased "high-end" suits before in the $1,300-1,500+ range off the rack (Zegna/Burberry) with alterations/tailoring, and these $400-600 suits look as good or even better than them. Their fabric won't exactly match Ermenegildo Zegna suits, but they'll fit so much better than the off-the-rack Zegnas that you'll probably hardly notice the difference in the fabric quality. To get Zegna-grade fabric MTM will likely cost in the $2,500+. For that price, I could have 4-5 awesome suits here. On the other end of the spectrum, lower-end suits from Macy's with alterations will probably run you into the $300-500 range after their discounts and alterations. Why not add an extra hundred in to make your suit look comparable to that $1,500+ one? It's pretty much a no brainer for anyone that doesn't think $2,500 for a suit is negligible. As long as Black Lapel continues to pay attention to the details and not cut those corners that many small shops eventually do, I believe they'll continue to be the best shop around. Disclaimer: I've bought one suit and one blazer from them so far. Compared to my latest Burberry suit with alterations earlier this year, I honestly like my BL suit more. read more

I was extreeeeemely pleased with Black Lapel. I worked with Jay and the whole process was great. I was buying a tux for my wedding and went to about 4 other stores (Jos A Bank, Hugo Boss, J. Crew, Men's Warehouse - I'm not sure why they are in the business of dressing men, and Calvin Klein). I was about to make a move on Hugo but figured I'd give the internet one last look. Black Lapel popped up in my search (weird it did not previously) and there was no way I was going to go the interwebs route with home measurements, until I noticed BL has an office/showroom type location three blocks from my office on 27th. About 6-7 weeks before my wedding, I made an appointment, was measured by Jay, and went through the custom options at the location (using the same site one can use from the comfort of their couch). Almost 4 weeks from that day, the black box arrived at my doorstep, suit very neatly folded, with shirt. I made an appointment to come back in to determine what would have to be altered. I had to look good - this was my wedding, in New York, in The Central Park Boathouse...pressure was on. I went with the Slim Peak Tuxedo (100% Super 110s wool) for a rather traditional look. Jay provided great input on the custom options and gave his opinion on what is typical for tuxedos and why I might choose one thing over the other. The part that I was extremely extremely pleased with was the shirt. I think I have only had one other shirt in my life that I've put on and felt like it fit like glove and even then that other shirt wasn't exact. My ribbed tux shirt was SPOT ON, and the black studs were sharp (some advice: I hate undershirts but if you want to wear a shirt, go to UNIQLO and get their Heattech base layer type shirts. They are skin tight and long so they won't bunch up or take away from the fit of the shirt AT ALL - I was in my tux for 15 hours and the "undershirt" was the same as when i put it on). BL doesn't sell too many accessories (i.e. Bow Ties) but I think it's better this way...their focus is suits. Let a company that wants to focus on suit essentials focus on that. I paired the tux with a Solid Black Velvet (D. Wade collection) from The Tie Bar (and Black Lapel actually referred me to the website). It was a match. I'll be working on adding some photos and maybe updating this as I remember other things and future purchases. I'm already planning on a suit for a big event in the spring, but thinking I might wear the tux to Shake Shack in the meantime. You can feel it when you put on custom fit clothing, and the confidence you have wearing it is also elevated. This was exactly that. Some of the absolute PROS of Black Lapel: - measurement process in store is very extensive - now I know, in hindsight, why it fit really as well as it did - VERY CONVENIENT especially if you are in New York City (measure on location) - alterations are included (BION many high end boutiques or brands don't include this). - Price: very reasonable for a suit that is made for you. I think my total with the suit, shirt, stud set (which they sell) was under $670. - they have a satisfaction guarantee (almost not worth mentioning but it is something they point out also) - materials: I'm not extremely knowledgeable in suit materials (however I know not all 110s wool is equal for example) but this felt very comfortable, especially the shirt (again). - my measurements are saved on my online profile so now when I go to order anything else, I know I'm getting exactly something that fits. - request Jay (I'm sure everyone is great there) - shipping included, and delivered to your home (and tax free since they are online and I live in NJ!) CONS - I thought the first appointment would be have them walk through their selection, process, etc. That happened but the I didn't assume I was going in to place the order that day. Before I knew it I was measured, and walking through the ordering process. No big deal because I'm happy I did but just know this is what the initial consultation/appointment is. Since this is my first tux I wasn't sure what to do but pictures of me in it are going to follow me for the rest of life so I had to look great. He helped me make some choices on things like fabric and lapel style and size and then took my measurements for the suit. My tuxedo came in about 4 weeks later and fit absolutely perfectly. When i put it on, I couldn't stop looking at myself. It was even better than I thought it would be. The tailored shirt and jacket had the perfect shoulder and sleeve length. everything was absolutely spot on. These guys are fantastic and the quality of the fabric and stitching is infinitely better than the department store suits I've tried on. The office is an open space, not overly crowded or cluttered. Chris took all my measurements that day and took his time as he walked me through the many customization options. I appreciated their diversity- a blend of classic and modern, fashion forward styles. I didn't feel rushed or pressured to make any decisions. I was able to peruse the shop and compare the items on the display at my leisure. I received my remake along with 3 blazers today. The Fit: Spot On... as if I went to a local bespoke shop. The Fabric/Feel: Aside from not having a Mill Brand -- It feels better than most Vitale Barbaris super 130 and below. (yeah I'm not kidding -- it's very smooth & almost silky) The only complaint i have now is that I have no more room in my closet to hang these gorgeous pieces of clothing. What I purchased: - Grey Shadow Windowpane - Cool Grey Linen Blend - Light grey with Blue check - Delancey Blue Windowpane I had originally given BL 4 stars based on fabric selection, customization and a general comparison to my local bespoke/M2O experience. It takes a bit of hope (or foolishness) to buy something like a suit online you've never seen. And I've read stories of bad experiences from other MTM makers on Reddit and clothing blogs, but I took a leap of faith. I narrowed my choice down between Indochino and Black Lapel. I'm very pleased that I chose the latter. I'm a short, skinny guy, and just about everything on the rack is too long and loose-fitting for me. It's very difficult for me to find anything that is a modern, tailored fit when you hover around 125 lbs and stand at 5'3". For me, made to measure was the only viable option for a good suit. I had my trusted tailor take around twenty measurements (which they reimbursed me for), submitted them on their website, and a month later, the suit arrived in the mail. From the first time I contacted them, they answered every question and concern I had expediently and thoroughly. More importantly, the fit and quality blew everything I've ever wore from Macy's or Men's Warehouse away, and rivaled a J. Crew Ludlow suit too. The pants fit as well as any pair I own, and the only alteration I needed was to shorten the sleeves on the jacket a couple of inches, and they reimburse you for up to $75 in alterations. So remember this, they'll pay for a tailor to measure you, pay for the alterations, and still remake the suit or refund your money if you're unsatisfied. I really couldn't ask for more goodwill from a company. If you can get your measurements down, you really have nothing to lose. Their customer service is impeccable, and the value is unparalleled in the $500 range. I could have bought a SuitSupply suit with slightly better wool for the same price, but the fit would have been much worse, I'd have to pay for alterations, and it wouldn't have been customized to my liking. If I had a dollar for every time I've received a compliment just the first day I wore it, I could have bought myself lunch and dinner with that money. I'm well aware that I've piled heaps of praise on this suit, but seriously, the folks at Black Lapel are on to something great here! It doesn't matter how you look or how you're shaped, you can look like a million bucks for around five hundred. read more

I recently had Black Lapel craft my suit along with my groomsmen's suits for my wedding. They were outstanding. I can't imagine that we were an easy party to accommodate. We were 8 persons who lived as far away as Staten Island, Queens, and Long Island, many of whom were out of town traveling quite often. Moreover, we put in our orders quite late and to complicate matters further, one of my groomspersons was a woman. Black Lapel handled it all like a champ. We received our suits in time to get alterations before the wedding and most importantly, they looked amazing. We ordered the Cool Gray 2 button. Some of us opted for two piece suits and others, three piece, but they all looked outstanding. I cannot recommend Black Lapel enough. read more

I am a major Black Lapel aficionado. These guys (and gals) are awesome and if you are picking a made-to-measure company in NYC or online, I implore you to check them out either online or by going into their showroom in Chelsea. Black Lapel has everything down and now that I have a bunch of custom suits, I have compared them to several other companies and Black Lapel is heads, shoulders, knees and toes above the rest. Their customer service is literally outstanding. Every other company should take a page out of their book. It's fast, it's funny, it's friendly. They're always available through a variety of mediums (email, phone, Facebook). They're also customer centric. They take the time to personalize your order and to ask you about things that are important to you instead of just making assumptions (I've had other M2M companies just add different adornments like button color, type of cuff, etc to my clothes without asking). They're committed (might be an understatement) to making it right when they make mistakes. Here or there they have made an error or there has been a miscommunication and they have literally bent over backward to make things right. Their speed is also excellent. They aren't the cheapest M2M company (there are some online companies direct from Asia that you can order from and Indochino is cheaper), but their fabrics and their service and their showroom and the whole vibe makes it worth it. They're also not nearly the most expensive. You can get a suit from Black Lapel for between $499-$700 and you will get at least $1000 of compliments/ego boost from it, so that's a pretty sweet ROI. read more

Yet another 5 star review to add to Black Lapel's growing collection. I heard of Black Lapel through a few friends, and recommended we look into using them for the groom's and groomsmen suits for my sister's wedding. Seeing as two of us are in NY, two in CA, and one in Australia, it seemed like the easiest way to coordinate matching outfits. I measured at home, and then scheduled an appointment at Black Lapel's office to check my measurements -- something I recommend everyone should do if they live in NYC. Besides ensuring accurate measurements, it is fun to go in and meet some faces behind the company that you are using. (Also - to Brianne, Mari and Jay, thanks for the excellent customer service!) I picked up my suit at their office as well, and they checked it for fit in case there were any alterations necessary (there weren't). When the groom received his suit, he took it in to his tailor for a fitting; the tailor promptly told him that it would be a crime to take money to change a perfectly fitting suit. Bear with me on this long review. So I've ordered many different MTM suits and jackets over the last several years. I have an athletic build so getting suit that fits my chest and shoulders is extremely difficult off the rack. I have experience with several different price points, website performances, quality of material, and the customer service provided at different areas. With all that said, Black Lapel is by far the best MTM service that I have purchased. I will go into several points below: 1. The important dimensions were spot on. I've never had a suit jacket that tapers the lower back and provides the same level of waist suppression without pulling at the buttons. The shoulders and chest fit perfectly to the measurements I supplied. 2. The quality of the materials used is very nice. It would be tough to find a super 120's wool suit for less than $500 off the rack. Black Lapel's 3 starting suits are all super 120's at $500 each, which is a steal when you consider that you are getting a custom suit. 3. They offer a $75 credit for further alterations, or a complete remake if the suit does not fit perfectly. This rule applies to every suit, whereas most companies only cover the first. This is extremely important for weight lifters out there that might fluctuate 20lbs between the next time you order another suit or sports coat. 4. The customer service representative responds quickly and provides great feedback based on pictures of the suit. After ordering my first suit, they were able to tell exactly what needed to be altered based on a handful of pictures I provided. Now for some warnings: 1. Pants will probably be too baggy and too long if you follow their directions. Since this issue is an easy alteration, I'd rather have pants too big than too small. So I would recommend still using their measuring guide, just expect them to be baggy. 2. The suit jackets have functional buttons. This is a sign of quality, but also makes it a lot harder to alter sleeve length with jackets. If you order a suit here and the sleeve length comes out too long, it is probably worth requesting a remake. Most tailors will not be able to alter sleeves over functional buttons, especially if its over 1inch too long. 3. I know this place seems a little more expensive than some of the competition. The quality if extremely nice and totally worth it at the super 120's starter price. When you start reaching the $1,000 mark, you might as well go to a local bespoke tailor if your city has one. read more

This spring, I had the experience of buying a custom suit from Black Lapel and a custom tuxedo from MySuit at the same time. Thus, I spent time at both showrooms, dealt with both sales persons, had fittings at both, and paid both prices. You can see my review of MySuit on their Yelp page. I got on Black Lapel's website and set up a measurement session about a week out. At my initial appointment, my salesmen, Chris, was very attentive and knowledgeable about current fashion and how a suit should fit when I was there in person. He measured me and I placed my order (which was done via their regular website and online order process, which was a bit weird, but it worked). Chris recommended I just have the suit shipped directly to the showroom so he could prepare it for my fitting when it comes in. He told me it was a 4 week deliver time. OK, 1 month for a custom suit didn't seem unreasonable. Fast forward 4 weeks. I called to make an appointment for my fitting after I received noticed that the suit was delivered to the showroom. The person refused to make an appointment over the phone saying appointments can only be done online. OK, so I log on only to see there were no openings for another week an a half. So I make the appointment only to have it cancelled on me the next day. Then the bad customer service began. After complaining they should have slots available for when suits come in because the customers will want to get it fitted as soon as possible, the sales guy on the phone said because shipments sometimes show up a day or so late, so they don't let customers schedule appointments until they actually arrive in the showroom and process them (which takes about 3 more days after it arrives). Basically, he was saying they were too lazy to keep track of their orders to provide better customer service. I arrived for my fitting 10 days after the suit arrived in the showroom only to learn that the pants fit awfully! I mean they looked more like MC Hammer pants they were so ballooned out in my legs and hips instead of a tailored look. Further, the coat was fitted for a guy 30 pounds heavier than me. Of course, they altered them, but that took them yet another 10 days and meaning I had to make yet another impossible-to-get appointment. The shirt, however, did fit well and needed no alterations. In the end, it took over 2 months for the entire process from scheduling my initial measurements to walking out the door with a custom suit. It might have taken a week less time if I could schedule fittings mid-day, but I have a job and that certainly isn't convenient for me. Honestly, it felt like I was working with a bunch of college drop outs who knew how to create a snazzy website and had a good off-shore textile shop, but didn't know anything about running a business. The sales team, though friendly and knowledgeable, is an huge pain to deal with. On the bright side, I would consider ordering their shirts again ONLY because they have my measurements already and I can have it shipped directly to me. But, I will never deal with their scheduling nightmare again for a custom suit, especially after how ill-fitted it was during the first fitting. read more

Eternal, loyal fan. Black Lapel has won me over with their exceptional customer service and quality of fabric. They have been supportive of me throughout my entire endeavor, from browsing to evaluation. I was in NY for a few days visiting friends and made an appointment to see BL while in town. It was only fair as I was updating my decade old suit with something fresh and styled to my tastes. Additionally, since I was taking the MTM route, it came down between two companies, its competition whom I will only refer to as IC. They had their random popup event in LA which I attended. Folks there were nice and I did see their lineup, but still wanted to give BL a chance. I think I knew my heart already knew. Anyway, I made an appointment with Brianne who welcomed me to New York. It was a lengthy process going through the measurements, styles, fabrics, customization, and option - you'd swear I was planning a wedding. But definitely all worth it, and competitively priced. She patiently answered all my emails like a high school kid bugging college admissions. A month later with express shipping, there's that awesome black box at my doorstep. Yes I even ditched work for it. The packaging and grand attention to detail to the suit, vest, and shirt were very well done. Care instructions were meticulously detailed and it's almost as if Black Lapel has their pulse on their customers because I received an email from Brianne to let her know when it had arrived. Who knew? I did some steaming in the shower since I had a presentation for my graduate coursework, and receiving endless dapper accolades from women and men alike. As promised, I did some followup with Brianne who gave me suggestions on where to do some minor alterations, all covered by Black Lapel. Even on twitter when I mentioned the toss up between Black Lapel and IC, Black Lapel answered quickly and honestly despite the time difference. IC no where to be seen, responded days later apologizing for the oversight. I will stress this again, customer service makes a HUGE difference and Black Lapel knows this. It backs their quality products which my local tailor is aware and can recommend. I sincerely thank Brianne and the Black Lapel family. They are absolutely premium and good folks. This shop has quality fabrics, good customer service, and reasonable prices. The turnaround rate for a new suit is impressive as well. My only negative comment is my experience yesterday when I came to pick up my first suit and the fitting confirmed that the waist size was approximately 2 sizes larger. They agreed to adjust it as necessary, but I mentioned that I am a New Jersey resident and it gets difficult coming to the city to pick up the suit again. I requested it to be shipped instead. They mentioned a shipping fee would be charged. Frankly I have no issue paying a shipping fee, but this should have been waived given the fact that I was thoroughly measured for over 30 minutes in person at my first visit so it is not my fault as a customer that it was tailored incorrectly at the waist. After all, I did spend close to $600 for a professionally tailored suit. Regardless, I will continue to purchase through Black Lapel and recommend them to others. read more

I will start this review off by saying that I'm supremely satisfied with the quality of my suit, the process (although a little long, somewhat vague in detail), and the professionalism I was met with during the entire transaction. I've worn my suit about 3 times now, and the compliments keep getting better. I'm recently engaged and shopping the market for custom suits for my groomsmen. Given the relative proximity to most of my guys, BL has an easy to access showroom and process for what I need. The suits look great, and nothing beats custom. I contacted them regarding their wedding promotions, and I was given a prompt explanation of their offering - 10% off each order, or a $99 shirt for free. 10% off of a $500+ dollar shirt isn't quite a savings, frankly -- it's just about cutting the sales tax off of the product... not much of an expense saver for the groom's party who are already paying their way through a wedding (which, as most know -- isn't a cheap thing). Edit: Updated to 3 stars, because BL does have a solid customer service team. Summary Below: In my particular case, shopping for wedding attire -- I need a quality, custom product, at a reasonable price, times 10. If you are looking for a custom suit, and want a pretty good product -- by all means, check these guys out. If this is your first time, you'll love it. In my case, I truly think BL needs to revisit their approach on what matters most when making decisions for a wedding, especially suiting large parties who are already investing hundreds of dollars for a single day. BL has an easy to access showroom and appointment system -- they're flexible too. This is something they do well. However, as I said above, the personalization aspect is just not there yet for a wedding party. An educated, interested, and empathetic concierge, who understands what I'm going through during the process of funding a wedding as well as understanding that in this transaction you gain 9 new customers, well -- I'm sorry -- please tell me how 10% a head really makes any difference, on either end? Black Lapel has an outstanding product from first contact to last alteration. The process starts with stylist taking measurements. They have a number of fabrics and styles to choose from. You can choose some small details and get a free monogram sown on the inside pocket. Then, it usually takes a month to get the suit. The suits are around $500 for the superfine 110-120. I shopped around and places like Suit Supply sell off the rack suits and go up from $500. Banana Republic has prices around $350-$550. And anything from Men's Warehouse or those types of stores are selling over $300 and they fit like a pair of Paco jeans from the 90s. The main reason going for a bespoke suit, though, is because the fit. The fit is the most important aspect of the suit. Luxury brands and superfine 150 won't save a suit that's not tailored correctly. Also, they keep your measurements in the system and can be easily used for the next suit. If you're looking for anything in the $500 range, this is joint is the real deal. read more

All of 4 of my suits (black, light gray, cool gray, and navy) are from BL. As a guy with weird proportions, it's always been impossible for me to find an OTR suit that fits well without having to do major tailoring work. Their self-measure system is very intuitive and easy, although it can be intimidating for someone who has never done it before. And if you mess up on your measurements, they have a perfect fit guarantee where they'll either remake the whole suit for you or compensate you for tailoring work done by another tailor. While their fabric and suit construction is great, where they REALLY shine is their customer service. Their responses to emails come usually within a 24 hour period, and they often go above and beyond your own requests in order to make sure you get what you want. I bought a light gray suit from them, and went into their office in Manhattan to try it on. I wore it, and I thought it was all good, but Derek, one of the founders, looked over the suit while I had it on, and pointed out a few areas that could be adjusted to provide a better drape. I didn't notice that I tend to slouch forward a little bit on my shoulders, and it was creating the smallest amount of wrinkling in the fabric. He really cared about getting the perfect fit for his customers. I am very particular about the detailing, but I'm not always sure on exactly what I want, so I can tend to shoot multiple emails about a single transaction, before committing to the purchase. The BL concierge team patiently answered all of my questions, and was extremely helpful. The suits look perfect. My only knock on BL is that the buckle on their adjusting strap on the back of their vests is of mediocre quality and not very intuitive. Also, I miss their old full canvassing on all of their suits, although I think you may still be able to get it fully canvassed by paying extra. Other than that, as far as the quality and price goes for a fully MTM suit, BL provides an awesome bang for the buck, and I intend to get all of my future suits from them as well. I've been to the Indochino store here in Philadelphia, and was able to compare their suits with Black Lapel's, and I will say that Black Lapel, while a bit more expensive, is definitely WAYYY better in terms of quality. read more

I ordered mine online and it was a great experience. They really go out of their way to make sure you get the best product. I sent in my order for a shawl tux (it was my first order) and they emailed me back to check and make sure the measurements were right bc they looked odd for my height weight. I had a friend do the measurements and thats probably why they were off. If it's your first time i'd have a tailor measure it for you. After all the corrections were made i got my order and was extremely pleased with the quality of the product. Did have to make one minor adjustment but it was covered by BL. I wore it to a wedding and it killed. The first one is a bit of a trial but after that the measurements should be spot on with some adjusting. I've bought my previous suits from JCREW and i love them but always have to pay to tailor the jackets bc my waist is pretty small. Personally I like the JCREW suit quality just a touch more but the difference isn't too much. I also bought a white dress shirt and it turned out very well. Like i said before I have a small waist and i hate how my dress shirts bunch up when i tuck it in my pants. No problem with the MTM shirt. They have my future suiting and dress shirt business and i highly recommend getting one and seeing for yourself. read more

Overall, a great experience and product! The Royal Blue tuxedo looks fantastic, both in person and in photos. Its majestic sheen makes it ideal for a groom's tuxedo. The jacket's fit was perfect and its personalized details (lapel, buttons, pockets, boutonniere, monogram, lining) were all exactly right. The pants were nearly perfect, but did require two rounds of adjustments (one by Black Lapel, to narrow the pant legs; then another by my local tailor, for some additional hemming). Also, the broadcloth shirt, studs, cuff links, and [free] pocket square from Black Lapel were excellent complements to the tuxedo. Two points of constructive feedback for Black Lapel: 1. Ensure greater consistency across stylists. The more experienced stylists are fabulous and provide sage advice, whereas the novices are in desperate need of more training. 2. Improve the scheduling system. There were calendar mix-ups each time I had an appointment. This is another MTM review based on in-person interaction, since I haven't ordered anything yet. I'll start off by saying, my efforts at contacting the staff at BL via e-mail was a little slow for my liking which I found odd for an online business. However, once I was able to setup an appointment for a consultation, everything went pretty smoothly. I will preface by saying that I've only been measured for a suit maybe two or three times, but this had to be one of the my thorough measurement processes I've ever been through. They took everyone of them 2 or 3 times. It can be a bit tedious and annoying for the subject of the measuring, but they want to make sure that everything fits properly. Any veteran of the MTM process will tell you that there will always be some kind of alterations needed, but I doubt they will be very many with that type of measurement process. As far as their selection of fabrics. it was pretty conservative and not nearly the breath of Knot Standard's offerings. But they do provide high quality fabrics and the fact that they offer half-canvas construction as standard is an even bigger plus. All-in-all I was impressed by how thorough the staff at BL was in taking my measurements and they quality of the fabrics they offer. I don't think you can go wrong choosing them to make your next suit. If your in the five boroughs, do yourself a favor and go into the office for measurements rather than do it yourself, unless you're really good at it. And it's always nice to view the suit fabrics in person than on a computer screen. read more

My groomsmen and I debated about going custom. Should we rent? Or should we go all out. After several discussions, we decided to check out a few custom suits spots and then I stumbled onto Black Lapel. I looked through their website and it was easy to navigate. They had a good selection of suits to choose from and a few tuxedos as well. I emailed Black Lapel and Brianne got us an appointment for four guys to come in on short notice on a Saturday. After taking our measurements and creating accounts for us. We spoke with Derek. He was helpful. We walked around and at that moment I was still set on a midnight blue tuxedo, but then we saw "it." The one and only Rivington Dusk Blue suit. We all loved the color and the herringbone design. It was classy and the price was not all too bad. At that point, we also had not decide on going with a custom shirt, but this changes later on, as we decided on getting a white custom shirt at the second meeting. After asking the turn around time for the suit and leaving Black Lapel with a "We'll be back." We returned within two months and decided to go with the Rivington suit. Since we had five guys that needed to be suited up, we received the 10% wedding discount. I went with the 3 piece Rivington suit, while the rest of the guys went with the 2 piece. There was a slight issue in terms of the turn around time, due to the popularity of the suit, it took a bit longer. I did not mind, as long as it is ready by the wedding date, I am fine. Matthew and Chris helped us, Matt went through the ordering process for us and jotted down all the customizations that we agreed upon for the suit and the shirt. Lucky for us, Chris told us that the suit was available to be ordered once again a few days later. The order process was simple, and the suit arrived on time, actually I think it was early. The fitting process was a little tight (time wise). We had a month and change left until the wedding and a lot of their weekend slots were booked already, so we could not roll in as a large group like we previously did. Nonetheless, my best man and I picked a date and time so that we could go together during the week. Calvin was assisting me this time around at their new and larger location. I tried on the shirt and the suit and Calvin recommended things that I should tailor. I agreed with his suggestions and the turn around time for the tailor was slightly longer than usual. When I went to pick up my garments, there was a delay getting it back from the tailor. I did not catch the person's name, but he went and walked or ran to go pick it up for me and brought it back to the showroom.. within 15-20 minutes. Anyways, I tried the garments on a second time and it was perfect. My groomsmen all got their suits ready and in time for the wedding. We have been very impressed with Black Lapel. Their friendly service, attention to detail, quality and price was what set them apart and made them special. They have definitely gained five fans throughout this entire process. I must admit I was a little apprehensive about ordering a bespoke suit online, but Georgina's responsiveness, attention to detail, and great customer service has made me a lifelong Black Lapel customer. She emailed me to confirm my measurements and multiple times afterwards that when I had to get minor alterations for the sleeves and pants. Georgina even rushed my order and sent it to another address so I would have it in time for my engagement party that was out of town. They definitely go the extra mile to not only make sure your suit fits flawlessly, but that you're happy with the overall process. The amount of measurements and pictures you have to take is kind of a pain, but is a testament to their dedication and attention to detail. I got a custom shirt that fits me better than anything else in my closet and a killer suit that only needed a few alterations. The only drawbacks are that I wish they had more jacket and pocket lining options (like Indochino jackets and Bonobos pants) and that you had more than 30 days to submit your alterations (although they're happy to extend the deadline if you ask!).
