Updating my review for Black Lapel. I received my suit last week. The suit came in a nice black box that contained some care and travel instructions as well as a garment back. Great touch of customer service there. The suit fabric is quite nice. I didn't pay for the wool upgrade but it was still thicker and felt nicer than many of the OTR suits I found at major retailers. After steaming some of the wrinkles out, I tried on the suit and was extremely happy. Everything fit just great. I was afraid that there would be some issues that required alterations but Mari, the concierge, did a fantastic job with getting my measurements. A couple years back I had a much more expensive suit made but had to come back twice for alterations. The fact that Black Lapel got it right the first try was very impressive. I had been looking for a suit that fit right for a while to no avail. I thought might as well go made to measure so I did some research and came across Black Lapel. Of course the first thing I did was go to Yelp and saw all of the amazing reviews. The prices online looked very reasonable for made to measure suits. I made an appointment through the website. They have very flexible hours and are open on weekends for anyone who works late on weekdays. I arrived on the date I set to get measured and was greeted by Christopher who was very attentive and knowledgable. He walked me through the whole measuring process and each detail that you can customize on the suit. They do have the fabrics of all the suits they offer online in the office location. Once my measurement was complete they roughly estimate it will be about 4 weeks until your suit is ready to go. I made an appointment after my measurement and had the suit shipped directly to the Black Lapel office. My suit arrived in about 3.5 weeks and I went in for the fitting. You are assigned the same person that took your measurements. Christopher walked through the entire fit from explaining how the suit should fit when buttoned to how the pants are form fitted to you. The suit fit almost perfect had to do a few very minor alterations which are covered by Black Lapel. Christopher pointed out minor tailoring needs I hadn't even noticed which I was very thankful for! I highly recommend black lapel for all your suiting needs! This was well worth the money to have the best possible fitting suit. I will defiantly be a return customer. I needed a suit for my wedding, and after trying on a few disappointing off-the-rack suits at various retail stores, I decided to take the leap to trying MTM. I researched a few different companies, and ultimately went with Black Lapel on account of the consistently great reviews plus the ability to get measured (and also get some style and fabric tips) at their office in NYC. I'm happy to report that they completely live up to their excellent reputation. Although I encountered a few production issues along the way, Black Lapel really went above and beyond to make up for them and ensure I was 100% satisfied with my purchase. Their customer service is truly excellent. My three-piece suit looks amazing and fits perfectly, and ditto for a dress shirt that I also bought. I received a ton of compliments at my wedding. I'll definitely be a repeat customer, especially now that my measurements are all on file. Really my only regret is that I should have made my first appointment a little bit earlier. I had my initial appointment about 9 weeks before my wedding -- it was enough time for everything to be fine, but it would have been a bit less stressful if I had gone in a few weeks earlier. Mainly I say this since it was my first time doing MTM, and that typically means some alterations and maybe even some remakes will be involved. I'm thankful that Black Lapel's concierge staff were extremely patient, even as I was freaking out a bit (mostly from other unrelated wedding planning insanity) in the couple weeks right before the wedding. Overall their pricing is very reasonable, especially if you're in NYC and can visit in-person. I previously used a local (Los Angeles) custom tailor for business attire. As the made to order industry emerged, I was intrigued by the possibility of a wider range of options and curious about whether this could be as good as it sounds. I did significant research on the small number of startups in the sector and narrowed down to Black Lapel and its primary competitor at the time. I read lots of reviews and decided to give Black Lapel a try for two reasons. First, customers seemed to feel the fit and fabric selections were better. Second, people were much more positive about the customer service. My experience has been superb. I have now ordered four suits from BL and am preparing to transition my dress shirt purchasing as well (ordered one to check sizing). The quality of the fabric and garment construction is exceptional, and I appreciate the many customization options - all for considerably less than half what I was spending on fully tailored garments. This was my first experience purchasing a custom MTM suit as I have always gone with OTR suits that never quite fit right. Seeing as how I reside in NYC, I opted to book an appointment to get measured in person at their showroom. My first appointment (and most of my subsequent visits), I was seen by Matthew, who was courteous, knowledgeable, and patient with answering any and all of my questions. I never felt that I was being pushed into choosing a particular style or product that I didn't want. I conveyed what I was looking for and he made suggestions that he thought would fit that bill. After obtaining the measurements, which took about 30-40 minutes, I chose the cool gray three piece suit, and a custom shirt to go with it. Approximately four weeks later, my suit and shirt arrived at their showroom and I went in for the fitting. He explained that the jacket, vest, and shirt needed minor alterations to obtain a better fit and that it would be sent out to a tailor with a one week turnover, which is covered by BL. One week later, I was back for another fitting, this time with Jay, whose customer service was on par with what I experienced in my prior visits. Everything fit perfectly, except the shirt, which needed one more alteration around the waist to achieve a more tapered fit. Again, they covered the cost for the alteration and another week later, everything was perfect. I had my outfit ready just in time for a friend's wedding and I honestly couldn't be happier with the look and fit. I will never even look at another OTR suit so long as BL continues to deliver on their promise of exceptional customer service and value. I'm already looking forward to my next suit. read more

If it wasn't for Valentino at Black Lapel, my dad wouldn't have gotten his custom suit in time to look extra sharp for the surprise vow renewal/40th anniversary party that my sister and I were throwing for our folks! While I wanted a custom suit for this surprise special occasion, my dad wasn't so sure that was necessary since he's pretty low-maintenance. I read TSB Men's (now Articles of Style) review on Black Lapel and I will admit that I was pretty skeptical of the whole online MTM process. Nevertheless, I took the plunge and went with Black Lapel over the other online MTM retailers. In my opinion they offered fabrics that suited my taste. Also, they appeared to have the most "bespoke-like" customization available (e.g., surgeon cuff thread colors, pocket options, etc.). I followed the instructional videos presented on their website and entered my measurements. My advice is to be very meticulous with this to ensure the best fit. In fact, their concierge team contacted me within 24 hours to confirm my order and my measurements. They really want to take the time to confirm your measurements before they do any crafting - which I found to be a definitely plus in terms of customer service. They show that they care about your time and your money when they reach out like this. I received a very nice fitting (slim cut) suit in a little less than their 4 week guarantee. I am really impressed by the drape of the suit, the cut, and the fabric (110s, which is good fineness for regular suit wear), despite the fact that the suit is either half canvassed or fused. I believe you can get a fully canvassed piece if you are a repeat customer - which is a nice option! In terms of cost - you get a lot of value here for a $500 - $700 suit. You can pay the same for an off the peg garment - and more than likely the suit will not properly accommodate your natural stance or your shoulder slope (I should mention that Black Lapel takes those things into account). The suits are constructed in China so that brings the cost of labor down significantly. I wouldn't be too worried about "Made in China" because Chinese tailors are very skilled and you are still getting fabric that is most likely from Australia or Italy (I am not sure which mills they use). Their concierge service is excellent, professional, and timely. I highly recommend Black Lapel. read more

Like everyone else here, I went to Black Lapel to get a suit for my wedding. Matthew was my main point of contact throughout the whole process. First appointment, I got measured and placed the order. Super easy process, and Matthew was there to make recommendations left and right. Once the order was placed, the next appointment was 4-5 weeks out. Second appointment, I tried on the suit and shirts. Excellent fit, quality, and just overall craftsmanship. There were some adjustments that needed to be made, though, so I had to come back a third time two weeks later for the final suit. At that point the suit was perfect. I admit I have no context around custom-made suits, but this fits better than any suit I've ever owned. It's weird - I can't think of any bad things to say about the process as a whole. Protip: make sure you allow at least 6-8 weeks before you need the suit. Well worth the time and effort to go with Black Lapel for any of your custom suiting needs. read more

Tl;dr Go to suitsupply. Very dissatisfied. My husband regularly gets mtm suits (more than a dozen). I thoroughly researched and heard so many great things about black lapel so finally, after much insistence on my behalf, was able to convince my husband to visit Black Lapel & get his suit for our wedding done here. Made an appointment. Was not at all fond of the associate. She didn't seem to know much of anything. My husband, very reluctantly, got measured and went through with the entire process. Time passes. (A Longgg Time especially with their horrible scheduling problems!!!) Suit's finally ready. We go and as he tries it on, I (although I know very minimal about suit wear) could clearly see an excess of fabric on the left panel of his suit jacket. It looked absolutely horrible. I hated it. I mentioned it to this not so experienced associate, and although she could quite obviously tell what we were talking about (she tried seeing if she could 'fix it' by running her hand over it... whatever that was gonna solve) she proceeds to just flat out deny such a blatant mishap on the companies part. I was absolutely livid, but at this point she matter of factly mentions we would get about $175 to take it to a tailor of our choice. She mentioned it in such a 'business as usual' way that it was simply infuriating. This told me that apparently it's a common complaint of theirs. Read all the other reviews -- This is how black lapel works. And anyone that knows anything about tailoring knows that $175 isn't gonna fix it. Absurd. Completely ridiculous. My husband, bless his heart, didn't want to make a scene about it. He said all was well and yay let's go walk down that aisle... This was almost three years ago. It is his most HATED article of clothing. He calls it the bat suit because of all the bagginess on the side. He's been wanting to donate it for months already, but what holds him back is the emotional aspect of it. I tell him to simply cut off the patch where they 'personalized' our wedding date and be done with the rest. This, by the way, is absolutely cheap and so poorly executed. All his mtm suits have the stitching on the ACTUAL suit. Black lapel on the other hand grabs a random excess of fabric, gets it stitched, and then sews it on. So poorly made (not sure if u guys know but they're made in china btw). The ridiculously huge margins from the work they make in china more than covers for all their errors and mishaps. I, of course, feel so upset that I recommended black lapel in the first place - especially on such a momentous occasion. We see our wedding pictures and he cringes at the sight of that suit. Definitely not something you want to think about when looking back on such a joyous day. Listen people: I'm the type that will take years to post a bad review because I don't want to speak from a place of anger. So if this was years ago and we still haven't gotten over it, I think you guys should take into account this review... and all the other negative reviews here. She was delightful and made it much less awkward than I'd imagined. Today I went to try my new suit on for the first time and was prepared for some substantial alterations. You get what you pay for. The suit is $600, so it's not going to look like a $1,500 suit. If you are like me and can't buy anything off the rack, you either have to go custom or buy something off the rack and get it altered. Suits in this price range (including alteration) will all look quite similar - none of them will be perfect. These guys are nicer about it though. The staff is willing to work with you, understand the issues and solve the problem When the suit came back, the pants were slightly off, and the jacket didn't fit at all. They were really great about it, had the pants fixed and the jacket altered. The jacket didn't get fixed so they re-measured me and ordered a new one. That tells me that they care about their reputation with customers. The second jacket came in and was still a little off. They altered it immediately and now it looks OK, not great but OK. read more

I am a lawyer and have one suit for almost every day for the last 16 years. When you buy suits off the rack, they always need to be tailored. Tailoring costs anywhere from $100-$150 to get it done right. Then, even after spending all that money, the suits almost never fit absolutely correct. When I have use Black Lapel, the Suit makers there have even asked for more information (like pictures) before completing the suits, just to make sure they're right. Then, when they arrive I put them on and there are absolutely no problems. So, in the end I get a suit that, for the combined price of the suit with tailoring, is nearly the same and fits better. If you care about how you look and not having a label inside the suit that says "Hugo Boss" or "Canali" this is undoubtably the way to go. I have about 4 of their suits and because of the quality fit, they last longer than my high end ones. Even then, BL let's you just order another pair of pants instead of a whole new suit if needed. I have bought about 15 custom suits in my life before finding Black Lapel. I'm 36 and wear a suit everyday for work and like to look good. I recently lost a good deal of weight and was in the market for new suits. I found these guys and really liked the process, they have all the fabrics they are currently making suits with available to see as a completed jackets, I found this nicer than just picking from swatches. They took my measurements and I ordered two suits they made the first one to get the fit perfect before making the second one. Only a small adjustment was made when I went back to try on the new suit, I was so happy with the fit I even ordered another. Quality is great and I got the suits in about 3 weeks. Best customer service experience I have received ever, from any business! I have bought multiple suits from Black Lapel (in fact going in today to get another). Kevin has helped me out from day one and when he is not there Calvin helped me. Both have been excellent. Here's what made them stand out for me. Last summer I went in to get measured for a suit. The suit arrived but in between I had lost a decent amount weight as I was in the middle of training. They had me try the suit, said that it's too loose to adjust and MADE ME A BRAND NEW SUIT FROM SCRATCH. It wasn't their fault. They could have told me it wasn't. But they didn't. This is how you keep customers coming back. Needless to say the quality of the clothes compared to the prices are also very good and I can never get a suit off the rack that I am happy with.
