I never leave reviews, but I'm going to place this on every site that I can find. I hope to let anyone else considering them to hear about our experience.
Miscommunication, little respect for your time, poor work ethic, sloppy.
Outside of the inspection done by a friendly & professional person (owner?), we are not happy with Black Moose.
This was expected to take 3 days, took 3 wks.
The quote details were vague, so before signing, I emailed the company mentioning that the cosmetic part was not included on the quote and I wanted to be certain that that issue would be fixed as well. I was very clear in what I was asking, and I wanted to have record of the communication:
Me: "Everything looks good, but I wanted to ask about the discoloration from efflorescence on the outside of the chimney. Would the cleaning and removal of the white discoloration running down the brick be included in the estimate?"
Black Moose: "Absolutely!"
Great, sent them the 50% to start.
They needed access inside, so I took two days off work to be there. They never showed. Around noon I called asking if they were coming, the receptionist said she emailed us days earlier & they needed to postpone for a week. That email never happened. Wasted 2 days off.
Following week they showed mid-morning and dropped off scaffolding that they never used & did nothing else on a fine weather day.
Since they needed access & I couldn't keep taking days off I agreed to keep doors unlocked. This wasn't my choice but necessary.
After wasting the good weather new start date there were a series of days with light intermittent rain. Sometimes it looked like they showed up and worked, some nice days they didn't do anything. Some days too rainy. I get the rain issue, but I can't cut slack on it since there were perfect days that they didn't show up to work while our house was sitting unlocked & unattended for many days & we work 30 miles away.
Some days we came home to sooty hand prints on the inside & outside of our doors, and around the fireplace.
There would be random debris laying around or water bottles for a couple days. This isn't big deal stuff but details reveal a lot.
When all was almost done, I noticed that they hadn't touched the staining, but were planning to come one last time to waterproof OVER it. I asked Michelle about this and they said they would have their guys clean it off. Nope. Instead of using an acid like it needs, they sent someone over with a pressure washer. They sprayed so much high-pressure water on our chimney we came home to water seeping in the basement in that spot on a dry day.
Nothing to take care of the staining they said they were going to fix.
That was it & the receptionist sent a $750 quote to take care of what they said that they were already doing for us. This was a bad way to handle it & since we just spent $10,000+ to fix chimney issues of which that was supposed to be included.
Now when we have the staining fixed by a company that knows what to do, they'll have to strip off the waterproofing & reapply.
They left little pieces of debris but the WORST mess they left was dried MORTAR SPLASHED ALL OVER THE FRONT OF OUR HOUSE from cleaning their tools with water. Some of it is 6ft high.
Didn't notice until long after it dried. Now I get to deal with that too.
Who hires workers with such little respect?
The structural & flue work they did was fine. If it wasn't for every other issue I would not be leaving a review like this & would be getting a pellet insert installed w/ them.
The poor communication was friendly at least. But friendly doesn't mean professional. Maybe if they finished the job as they said they would probably wouldn't be leaving a review like this.
We paid promptly and did our part.
Any response to this review will be quite telling on the way Black Moose handles business. There is not a single exaggeration here.
I have record of all communications, photos, & dates to share if anyone is interested. read more
