But the quote came quickly and was quite detailed. It included a good brand of the white EPDM I wanted. It was just as good or better than the quotes from some other bigger players. The price was much better too. So I hoped the no frills meant less overhead. I did check for reviews and they were good. So I decided to go with JM even though it was very hard to find much company presence on the internet. Communicating with Juan via text messages worked very well. I asked to add a plywood cover board and to help me locate the rafters and he was very accommodating. The team came out and Robin was in charge. He spoke English well enough to give me assurances they were going to do what I wanted. The biggest reason for replacing the membrane roof on my flat roof was to ready it for a solar panel installation, which I planned to do myself, if only I could get the 8 panels up on the roof. I'd asked Juan if the team could put the panels on the roof after the job was done. He was agreeable. Robin had the boys do it and did a good job of ensuring no damage to the new membrane by having them put an insulation board under them. When he arrived, he assessed the issue and explained that I did not need a cleaning, as the chimney was clean. He went on to say that at one point, there was a chimney fire, there is a liner, and smell is coming from that liner. He provided information on how to get rid of the smell (it only happens when damp out) and only charged me for the inspection. He explained everything, wrote down everything, and re-iterated what NOT to do. He was friendly, honest, and informational. Alpha will now be my go-to for all fireplace and cleaning needs.

Alpha was first on the list, so I called them. Multiple times, actually. And I'll explain why right now. Setting an appointment with this company was easily the least convenient part of the process. See, first time I called, we set a date (with no time window to narrow it down, btw), I waited at home for them ALL day, only for them to be a no-show. Okay, fine. Whatever. Probably had a breakdown in communication or something. Some weeks go by whilst I'm contacting other places for quotes. Long story short, I stuck with Alpha because they are honestly the most affordable option here. I call again, get a quote of $150 (even though the previous quote was 100 dollars less, but whatever), set a date for a full month later, call to reverify the appointment since nobody reached out via email or phone to reassure me I still had an appointment, got the time window narrowed down to one half hour (very impressive), dude comes out, inspects my chimney in 5 minutes, charges me the original quote of $50 and he's out. Bing-bang-boom! We got ourselves a usable chimney for the next foreseeable year. My only problems were regarding appointment confirmation and (evidently) receiving misquotes.
