If you want a fried chicken sandwich that's juicy and tender on the inside and crispy on the outside, this is the place. Six of us sat outside to enjoy the fall weather while having lunch. We had shopped around for a bit enjoying this charming little town. Service was a little on the slow side but the food was great. Three of us had the chicken sandwich. Our last night in Western North Carolina (and Black Mountain where we were staying) found us going to Black Mountain Ale House. Having been told about this spot from the beertenders over at Black Mountain Brewing at the start of our adventurous weekend getaway, we decided we would pay a visit and dine on some of their fare. The interior, which you can access either via a set of stairs going downward from the street level or the patio from the back entrance -- like most of Black Mountain, this is built on slopes and hills... or like most of Western North Carolina for that matter, is very sports bar-like but filled with friendly locals who enjoy a good local brew while watching football, baseball, or whatever local band is performing at a given time. We grabbed stools at the bar where I could bounce my eyes between screens behind the counter and across the room to the adjacent wall in keeping track of Sunday NFL scores, as we took our order. Being that I had my fill of local craft beer for a month that weekend by the time we made our way to the Ale House, I had water but ordered dry rub wings and a burger with pimento cheese, bacon, and carmelized onions. Again, like I had two days earlier at The Trailhead, I made the mistake of ordering too much, but didn't care. The wings were solid while the burger was tasty. Of course, any burger with bacon and pimento cheese is going to be tasty but I digress. Overall, you can't go wrong with Black Mountain Ale House. The bartenders are friendly and quick to accommodate. The kitchen is quick to correct an order -- they forgot my girlfriend is Celiac and had ordered a gluten-free bun, but made sure she didn't go long without a replacement. I felt bad about leaving a couple of wings in the basket, but my eyes were bigger than my stomach. Make no mistake, I liked the crispiness of the skin on the wings. My wife popped in here around 6pm on a Friday craving a casual environment and some bar food - this place hit the mark. The service was excellent and the food was even better. We had the Smokehouse Burger and Loaded Tater tots. The burger was smash style with grilled onions, delicious cheese and pickles. But be warned that it doesn't come with fries. The tater tots came with a great dill sauce- they were fantastic. The bar itself it really great. It's fairly large but feels small at the same time. First, I want to say the service was excellent, I give them 5 stars on that. My issue was with the pizza. I love Detroit style pizza, and have been wanting to try Ale house's. It was not much more than some pepperoni on chewy bread. Sadly, the WalMart brand Detroit style pizza is much better. My wife and I took a day trip up to Black Mountain and Catawba Falls and decided to give this place a try for lunch. Man were we blown away!! We had about a 10-15 min wait on a Saturday around 2pm. Once we were seated my wife tried one of their beers while I decided to give their Coquito a try. The Coquito was new on the menu and I found it pretty good! My wife and I couldn't decide on a sandwich so we ordered the veggie burger and the chicken sandwich and split them so we could each have a share of each. We have been coming here several times. We showed up at around 7:30 pm. The hostess told us they do not accept waiting list. There were five tables available. She said they have five people on the waiting list. We didn't see anyone then she said she texted and waiting for someone. It has something to do with my communication in sign language. I am deaf and my husband is hearing. She said for us to leave. I felt there is discrimination. It's really hurt. I may have to contact Black Mountain business association. We ate at Trailhead. People were so friendly. After ate there, we left and decided to walk through this restaurant because we parked outside next to this restaurant. People are still there at 9:10. This was my husband's favorite meal on our trip. The Whistle Hop Banana Wheat beer was some of the best beer I've ever had. The banana flavor was not too overpowering which I appreciated. My husband had the Crispy Country Ham Sandwich. The ham was shaved and then cooked so it looked similar to a larger version of bacon bits. He loved it! I had the Ale House Burger and it was very good. We split the tater tots and Mac and cheese. The Mac and cheese had a little kick that was perfect. Some of the best I've had. The tots were crispy and seasoned to perfection. We sat outside on their back patio which had heaters that our waiter happily turned on since we were a little chilly. After strolling through Black Mountain, we decided to check out the Ale House. Thought the menu looked good and good beer is always a plus. We ordered the Greek Salad, the Crispy Country Ham sandwich and the Braised Beef with Cheese. The salad was probably the best item of the 3. The crispy country ham was hard to find in the sandwich, being overpowered by cream cheese. The braised beef and cheese was good, although there were some crunchy black flakes in it. So, this place is in down town Black Mountain, kind of hidden in between two streets and the entrance is kind of hard to find. You check in with the host stand, there is outdoor seating, not covered, on a patio type open area and a large bar, with seating and all the other seating is lined around the bar area and some tables around the corner from the bar. The restaurant staff was very nice, however, they came around to tables very rarely, once to take your order, drop off food, and then to drop off the check. If you need any extra condiments or drink refills, you were out of luck. The food was pretty good. Not fantastic, but good. Service was mediocre. The atmosphere was great. Very laid back. Very light atmosphere, almost too light. I've been here for Sunday jazz brunch and it was great. However, when I stopped here for Sunday dinner I was highly disappointed. We sat outside because we had our pup, and we were completely neglected by our waitress. It was around 8pm and just got done raining so I assume the waitress kind of brushed us off. If that was the case I would have rather had the host tell us they just weren't serving outside. We stayed at an Airbnb in Fairview, and ventured into Black Mountain for the afternoon. We stumbled on Black Mountain Ale House, and I'm so glad we did! It was super bowl Sunday and we were for a fun bar to watch the game and since they had tons of drink specials we stopped in. Our waiter Keenan was very nice and attentive. We were on a mom's vacation so we were being quite silly and chatty and he was there for it. We shared the nachos (YUM) and some salads. All the food was great. We also had a plethora of drinks and shots and walked home happy and satisfied. I will definitely be going back for a visit the next time we are in the area! I had dinner tonight at a club meeting (French Broad Mensa) at Black Mountain Ale House and was pleasantly surprised by the food and service. First, the service was very friendly and perky, even though this was a group of around 15 or 16, most of which wanted individual checks, which must be a pain for the waitstaff to handle, especially given that by the time we left at around 8 pm the place was full. Second, the food seemed a step up from standard pub food. I had a burger with fries, but those around me had salmon and fish and chips and other entrees, and I didn't hear any complaints. My 8 oz. cheeseburger wasn't world-class, but it was prepared exactly to order, with first-rate fries. I'd rate it among the better burgers in the Asheville area, especially given the price ($8 plus 75 cents for cheese). I also had a Jack on the rocks ($7) and a Pisgah ale (a bargain at $3). Altogether, my bill came to around $20 with tax, not including my usual generous tip. The Ale House in the heart of Black Mountain on Cherry Street, but because the main entrance is just a doorway leading down some steep steps, it's easy to miss. (It's right next door to the well-known Verandah restaurant.) There's sufficient street parking on Cherry Street and nearby, especially in the evening. The basement atmosphere, with brick walls, spells rathskeller pub, but it fits this place. When in Black Mountain, I'd go back for a burger and local beer. read more
