If you're in the Downriver area, I definitely recommend stopping by Black Pine Tree. I started off by ordering the miso soup and ginger salad (pictured). Not bad! Just something to hold you off until your food gets there. Very cheap also - the miso soup goes for $2 and the salad at $3. I decided to order the crunchy crab and firecracker roll (pictured). Man oh man! Let me tell ya, both will do wonders to your tastebuds. That firecracker roll has such a kick to it. I've been here multiple times and will continue to do so. The reviews about their crappy service surprise me because we had excellent service. Their staff was very attentive. We came around lunch time so it wasn't too crowded but there were a handful of customers. Ended up waiting no more than 15-20 mins for our sushi. Plus: they have all you can eat California rolls Tuesday and Wednesdays for $12.95 until 3pm. read more

I've eaten here and they have great food. Last Friday I called at 5:00 pm several times and was hung up on several times. I want to support small businesses during the pandemic but I wish they found a different way to say they were busy or closed that evening. Never have the best experience here. My daughter had requested for her 21st Birthday. I was hesitant but decided to place an order. I called at 2:00 to place a 430 pick up. I arrive a little early 415, pay $98 & tipped $30. Im told to wait in my car and my food will be brought out to me. Finally after sitting in my car until 5:00 I go back into the restaurant. "Can I help you" Yes it's 500 and Im still waiting on my 430 pick up. There it is sitting on the counter. I brush it off to hurry back to my daughter's birthday celebration. As we begin to review the sushi rolls we realize one is missing. I live a good 15min from the restaurant. I call like 6 times and the phone keeps going to voicemail. I end up driving all the way back. When I arrive because know one would answer the phone Im told several times that my order was packed correctly. Me surprisingly being patient advised I had every member of my household check the order several times. Finally, the get the missing roll. Everytime I order here its a project. Good food, horrible service...Typically sushi is a quick meal for us, but not this time. It took us over 45 minutes to receive our 4 rolls we ordered. We observed several tables who arrived after us receive their food and pay before our rolls came out. It got to a point that we literally had a 5 minute timer set, the rules? Simple, if they didn't check on us (which they hadn't one time in 45 minutes) or if our food didn't arrive, we would leave. Every other sushi place I've been to downriver, I just keep going back to this place so they must be the best! I typically get carryout, sometimes a long wait but worth it (call at least 30 min before you want your food, sometimes no one answers ... so call back). I'm a little upset with my most recent visit here. I ordered the Obama roll, Philadelphia roll, and the tempura crab sticks. The Obama roll had no flavor and the potato shavings on top tasted as if they were stale. Philadelphia was good but every time I picked it up it fell apart ( I know how to use chopsticks too). Some of the absolute worst service you'll experience, both dining in and over the phone. I've been coming here for nearly 10 years, but once they moved locations and filled the place with millennial hipster staff, I cringe every visit because I expect - and end up receiving - a horrible guest experience. The food has gone downhill, but it's local and convenient (when not having to wait 45+ minutes for an order). This is the sole reason I still pop in from time to time. My latest experience sealed the deal and I will never return willingly ever again. Calling in a carry out order, I was told this wasn't going to happen due to the "sudden influx of people lined up out the door" and "because it's a holiday weekend". I asked what holiday and was told Valentine's Day - which by my calendar is next Tuesday. Sure, it's Saturday night but to turn away business so flippantly is just outrageous. Hey ownership/management: if you're expecting a huge romance seeking crowd, then staff accordingly in order to accommodate. If anyone reading this is seeking true sushi made with care by amazing owners, I implore you to visit Golden Chopstick in Westland. This is my go to and is 100% worth the drive, even for carry out. Black Pine Tree has Downriver fooled since there's nothing else around to compare it to. I've always liked this place for years but the last few times I've eaten here I was very disappointed in the sushi rolls. They use way too much rice on rolls even as simple as a spicy salmon roll. I can't even fit a whole piece in my mouth because the pieces are so big! I'm looking for quality not quantity. I'd rather have less rice and smaller pieces. Few thoughts: 1. The restaurant was very busy when we went. Took about 45 minutes to be seated. 2. While I don't think Sushi is ever a quick meal, it took about 45 minutes to an hour for us to get our food. I can forgive this because the sushi was worth the wait. A lot of people like this place. I am not one of them. It is not authentic... I ordered curry katsu which is an easy way to gauge a restaurants competency. Wow, and not in a good way. The good: -Sushi has always been on point. -Lunch Boat is a pretty good value and will fill you up. -For a strip mall sushi joint the decor is pretty cool. -Staff is super nice when they aren't busy. The bad: -This place does get busy and their limited dining room/small staff leads to a wait sometimes. -It's going to take them a minute to make your food, so don't go here if you're in a hurry for lunch. The ugly: -You have to pull the men's room doorknob towards you on the way out without paper towel (which I utterly despise.) The sushi is amazing! They usually have a long wait on weekends, the only downfall is there is no proper waiting area. They have a small bench that seats about 4 people. If I could give this restaurant negative stars, I would. This place served the most disgusting sushi I have ever eaten in my life. First, we waited for nearly 30 minutes to receive our food. I wanted to leave after the first fifteen minutes, but my husband insisted that we wait since the reviews were so good. There was a table of four people that had ordered, and I kid you not, three tray fulls of sushi. This table of people and the sushi chef deciding to make this table a priority was the reason no one else was getting their food. After these people got their food, everyone else started getting their rolls. That is just so stupid to make everyone in a restaurant wait to get their order just because a table of four decide they want everything off the menu. We had finally gotten our order and after the first bite of my Philadelphia roll, something tasted funky and almost like there was a bacon flavor. I took the salmon out of one of the other pieces, I spit it out immediately. It was old and the bacon flavor was coming from that. How can fish have that kind of flavor? I don't know people are thinking giving this place an over the top four star rating. Too much time spent in this area to not know what decent sushi tastes like? Methinks yes. read more

So here's my take: pretty good sushi (full disclosure: I am a sushi novice). We ordered California rolls, cucumber/avacado rolls, and a tempura California roll. The food was tasty and fresh. That is why we returned. So why three stars? The service left a fishy taste in my mouth. The staff was short, not generally helpful, and impatient. My thought: sushi is still new to most folks. Black Pine Tree is a cute, quaint little sushi restaurant tucked in a little strip mall. I remember being very happy when this place opened because there wasn't a decent place to get sushi Downriver. I heard that O'Samauri is awesome, so I'll have to go there next time. I ordered the Rainbow Roll, which is basically a California Roll topped with: Tuna, Salmon, Red Snapper and Yellow tail. It was pretty tasty, but I've had better. I think the chef saw me snap a picture, because he immediately offered me a free roll. It wasn't that great, but it's the thought that counts. Still lacking in certain areas at times but considerably better! If you came here a few yeas ago and weren't too thrilled, maybe give them another shot - I did. The food is GREAT! The Firecracker is one of my favs! And they do an all-you-can-eat lunch of California Rolls. Service is still hit or miss but they do have some great waitstaff and the last few times I've been there, the service was very good. Just getting seated though can be an issue...the host is a bit...unfriendly...No greeting; kind of just ignores the customers waiting until he's ready. A simple greeting of, "hello, I'll be right with you" or some kind of acknowledgement would be a step in the right direction. I've seen people get annoyed and just walk out after being ignored for too long. As a customer, it's frustrating. On a few occasions recently, with a full lobby of people waiting, I have seen plenty of open seating but told there was not enough waitstaff (typically on the weekends/evenings) - my suggestion: A. Plan ahead. Make sure you have enough waitstaff. B. Seat your guests, explaining the shortage of waitstaff and get them seated. Get them a drink and let them sip while sitting at one of those open tables, rather than standing around annoyed with one foot out the door. Be smart about your waiting customers. More money in your pocket and happier customers! read more

Solid little sushi spot! Friendly staff, decent prices, delicious rolls and nigiri that are just the right size - big enough to fill you up, but not so big they are difficult to eat. Nice presentation, too. This isn't the type of place where you'd take a first date, to impress her with a fancy sushi lounge. But rather, once you have been dating that person for a month or two and you're settled into routine, Black Pine Tree would be a perfect choice to make "your spot" to go on a Sunday afternoon for something nice and relaxed. The salmon nigiri was especially tasty, and the shimp tempura roll (which I get every place I go for sushi) was one of the best I've had anywhere. I gave this place a second try because the first time I wasn't totally pleased. The first go round I felt the sushi wrap was a little chewy and the sushi was not wrapped very tight. So I gave it a second try and I was a lot more pleased with the sushi wrap this time around however I must agree that for 2 times in a row the sushi was not rolled very tight. To the point of when I picked up my sushi, the sushi fell apart, now that doesn't take away from the fact that the sushi is still pretty good. But I can only speak for California rolls, shrimp tempura and shrimp rolls- I haven't decided to venture out to broader sushi options yet. I placed a carry out order and I have sat in the dining area on one occasion both times service was very efficient and staff was pleasant. Pricing is on the ok side-I have had cheaper priced-good sushi before but for the area and not to have many sushi options in the downriver area the prices are ok. The last downfall for me was the side of spicy mayo. The very small container of spicy mayo was $1.50, the mayo is good but a little on the pricey side. read more

I've been here twice now, only because I was given gift certificates. Downriver sushi places are few and far between, and this one seems to be the "older" one. I've been told it used to be fantastic before the main sushi chef opened his own restaurant somewhere else. Rolls are "okay," nothing to write home about, but not as bad as Kroger or the ever-awful "Oh Sushi" in Dearborn. I can say that the rolls are filling--they seem to serve larger rolls here than other places, which I can't complain about. Place usually seems to be quiet and slightly empty. They actually have more "American" desserts on the menu, which is unusual. They weren't that bad, but very clearly something defrosted and not homemade ;) If you're Downriver, it's something to do for sushi... but you'd be better off just hopping on the 94 to go to Ann Arbor, or even trying some local Chinese buffets. You'll get about the same quality for a cheaper price. read more

I was hesitant pulling up to Black Pine Tree. A storefront in a strip mall - and you're telling me the sushi is good? A local recommended it, so we braved it. Holy moly. Some of the best sushi I've ever had. We went with the salmon nigiri (always my favorite) and two specialty rolls - the Obama and the Black Tiger. Both were an incredible mix of flavors and textures. Our waitress was very attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. Our water was kept filled but she didn't interrupt conversation. We were seated very quickly. All in all, a true 5-star experience! read more

I really like the sushi here and the ramen is also delicious. This is typically y first choice when I want sushi or ramen because it is the closet for the options in the downriver area. The front of house service/to-go service people tend to get very confused a lot during their peak dinner hours or busier times on the weekends. My food has been lost a few times or forgotten about which is quite unfortunate. You're better coming here earlier in the day or on days they are not as busy. read more

As soon as I walked in I knew this wasn't going to be a good experience. The two men behind the counter weren't friendly, and when I asked to do a carry out, they right away told me that it would be a 30 to 35 minute wait. Almost like they were telling me "Don't order". I wasn't in a rush, so I said ok and looked over a menu. I said I was ready to place my order, and after a few minutes of staying at his register finally took my order. This is the place I've turned to for sushigoing purposes during visits to the area over the past two years. Sadly, Black Pine Tree's sushi has gone way, way downhill in recent months (--perhaps due to a change in chefs?). At first, everything was lovely: great miso soup, simple salad, perfectly scrumptious and well-put-together sushi and sashimi. Now, the maki sushi's laughably bad: lopsided, falling apart, tiny (or too-big, from being disproportionately stuffed with one ingredient).. Just, blatantly careless, blatantly sloppy -- The three (three!) times I ended up visiting during a stay in September, any maki rolls involving cucumber had pieces shooting out in all directions, spilling over, twice as long as they needed to be.. Is it really that hard to cut cucumber to size? :( read more

Their food is great. That's it. Their service and staff are the absolute worst. It's like a bunch of bratty teens running things and they almost try to deter people from take out or dinning in. COVID aside this has been the case for 5 years. Call to ask how long they are open and was told 9 but if we are not busy we are going to try and close early. Called for take out and was placed on hold twice, 10 min each time, only to be told that they aren't taking take out orders for another 15 min. Called back and was told no take out for 10 more mins. We were very pleasantly surprised at the food here. When we pulled up, we definitely judged the book by its cover. But when we ordered our Udon Noodles soup, the flavor in the broth was so amazing. First glance, strip mall sushi... Walk in, realize that they moved to a bigger location for a reason. Busy, but not an over crowded feel. Got the Chicken Tempura appetizer, quite tasty, but for the price, would have been nice to get more than 2 strips of chicken among the veg. After hearing very mixed reviews about this place I ended up going and deciding for myself. I went with a friend around 130p on Wednesday and we were the only people there for a good 30 minutes so our service was obviously amazing since the ratio was about 4 employees for each customer. I ended up getting the lunch boat and my friend got the box that was on the lunch special menu and it was really an excessive amount of food, definitely more than I expected which was a pleasant surprise. However, the literal boat that mine was served in looked visibly old and didn't compliment the food that was served, it almost looked dirty even though it wasnt. The food was pretty good but not the best sushi or Japanese food I've ever had, I'm just happy there is a sushi place downriver because 5/6 years ago we never had options like this so close to home. Overall, I'd go back for sure if one of my friends suggested it, but I would never go out of my way to go to this specific sushi place when there are much better ones in Dearborn and Royal Oak. read more

It's nice to have a place downriver to get your sushi fix. Seeing as there are now 2 on Eureka, hopefully that means more will continue to pop up! Went here for lunch yesterday with my little sister. They now offer AYCE California rolls Mon-Wed (I'm assuming to compete with Sushi Kami). We had a big mix of items- edamame, soup, salad, dragon roll, and a boat. Our dragon roll came to our table with the shrimp still warm on the inside. Our boat had a great selection of samples that we could share. Chicken teriyaki, california roll, 3 pieces of nigiri, a shrimp tempura and assorted veggie tempura pieces, along with their standard "potato salad" and "cabbage with some ginger dressing on top". Everything was delicious! Our server was busy, but was prompt, kept the drinks filled, and cashed us out without needing to wait. read more
