Went here for a work event and I was very apprehensive about going to a place called the barn, but the setup on the River is cute. We had about 100 guests outside under the tent and only two servers for drinks, it definitely seem like they could have used more help. I also thought it was kinda gross there was garbage in the seating area (a used band aid, sugar packets etc) all over the ground. The displays for the buffet were pretty but the food was subpar (awful chicken Marsala...served with paella rice, vodka sauce was not creamy eggplant was decent). The place is nice but the tables are too close to each other. I went with my husband we ordered Pizza and the Voodoo Pasta. The pizza was little but undercook and the pasta sauce was very thick but the pasta even thicker it sticks together and hard to eat. The overall services were good. I'm new to the area and I've tried a lot of restatraunts so far and I enjoyed the quality of food from here. I ordered on uber eats, and got 2 things off of the kids menu. The food didn't arrive soggy at all, it was packaged nicely, and they also gave bread & banana bread. Not sure why I got banana bread because I don't think I ordered it but I happen to like banana bread and I enjoyed it! I've drove past this restraunt and it looks nice on the outside. We had my mother in laws repast today and they did a wonderful job! We had the back room on the water . They prepared cheese platter, fruit , green tossed salad , ziti, chicken fingers, roasted vegetables, eggplant rotini, chicken rice dish, roasted potatoes and beef, corn beef and Turkey sandwiches , bread and butter ... ice teas , soda , coffee hot tea and dessert tray bites . Everything was delicious and the service was spot on. It was around $30.00 a person . We highly recommend. Everyone was nice as well . read more

The Barn has really stepped up during COVID! We love the seating outside, especially on the water, the menu is better than we recall pre-COVID, and the service is usually fantastic. This is our go to place now. So far we can recommend the pulled pork nachos, the haystacks, the Asian dumplings, the portabella vegetable wraps, and the short rib tacos to eat. We are making our way through the menu. The drinks are fabulous too. They have a great system for when you are waiting to be seated as well. read more

Okay, took the kids here for an early dinner/late lunch. I'm conscious of the fact that 3 kids and a grandma and mom aren't ideal customers from my time in food service but we're pretty well behaved. Anyway, great location and food was pretty good. The reason for the subpar review was because we were given 2 napkins for a family of 5. When I asked for more, we weren't given any so I asked again and still had no napkins. At this point we got ketchup and tacos all over the kids faces so I walk up to the takeout area and grab a few napkins. I sit down to distribute the napkins and kid you not the waiter starts taking them out of my hands. He's clumsily trying to explain that I can't have these napkins but isn't making sense and finally blurts out "they have our name on them and are over a dollar a piece." While I understand branded items like that are costly I think you just cut your losses and don't GRAB THEM FROM A WOMAN'S HANDS. I only grabbed as many as we would need...just effing rude. Seriously, it was bizarre plus I'm pretty sure I got ketchup on one of them so good luck to the customer who receives dirty napkins. read more

This may be the worst restaurant I've ever eaten in. Waited at the door to be seated forever. Then waited at the table, again forever to get a menu. Nobody Came to take my order. Had to walk to the bar to order my cocktail and tell the bartender I was seated at a table. Horrible martini arrived maybe 1/2 hour later. Then continued to sit there till a waiter came. Stupidly I ordered the roast duck. Meanwhile during all this time I kept telling myself this is an awful place and I should just get my butt outta here. Duck finally came. It was inedible. Blobs and blobs of fat. Barely any meat. I felt I was going to gag on it. Couldn't eat it and there was no reason to send it back. That would have taken hours before anyone came and I'd probably need a place to sleep before the whole thing happened and I'm sure the next thing I'd ordered would probably have made me sick. Nobody came to see if everything (I should have said "anything ") was good. I couldn't get anyone's attention for the check. After an inordinate amount of time,I went to the bar and asked for my check. The bartender said he'd send over the waiter, but I told him to just get it for me. I stood there and kept reminding him about the check and eventually got him to find somebody who could get the check. A complete waste of money. A complete waste of an evening. A complete waste of much too much time out of my life. I still get a feeling of nausea when I think about that plate of fat that was supposed to be a half roasted duck. I was just angry the whole time I was there. Will never go back The room was nice but that's because they took over the Seafood Shack room and didn't change a thing. I'm 75 years old now, and I've eaten in numerous places all over the world, and without hesitation if you want to go to the worst restaurant in the USA, go to The Black rRiver Barn. This place is pretty busy, gets a good amount of people in and out of here. The food I've had is pretty good. but I normally get burgers and pulled pork sandwiches, which by nature are normally decent. Although, the homemade sweet potato chips that came with the sandwiches were nothing shy of amazing. The wait staff is friendly, checking in enough to make sure your drinks never go empty. The experience at the bar was amazin. both bartenders this night were very friendly and highly attentive to all guests at the bar. When asked about specials and what they would recommend as drinks the one bartender Drew made the recommendation of one of their ipa's on draft for me and a casamigo's and club for my girlfriend. Then when it came for food Amza recommended the special short rib quesadill. It was in fact amazing. I highly recommend trying the Black River Barn. Easy check in during covid, through text. Hardly any wait on a beautiful Saturday night outside. I ordered pastrami Reuben with Cole slaw. Pastrami was very lean and tasty. Too much for one meal, bring home 1/2. My husband ordered a burger w/o the bun and fries. Tasty. Fast service considering the servers are walking and working extra hard getting things done. We used the Black River Barn for catering for our rehearsal dinner this summer and were highly disappointed with the way they handled everything. After months of communicating with our point person Bryan about the menu and pricing, we received a call from two other people in the company just a few days before the event informing us that there were several extra fees that had not been communicated to us. They also told us that the plan we had discussed with Bryan regarding our drink package was no longer going to work. To add to our frustration, when we showed up to the rehearsal dinner there was nobody present to direct us to our tables. We were expecting a more private location for our tables (because we had talked to people about this being our rehearsal dinner) but were instead placed at multiple circle tables in the center of a crowded eating area. Several other tables had umbrellas to provide shade from the hot sun but ours did not because there were linens on the tables which we did NOT ask for and were charged extra for. We had to ask several times for somebody to remove the linens and find umbrellas for us. Everything about the planning of this event was disorganized, and we find it completely unprofessional that the company charged us extra just DAYS before the event because of their own miscommunications. The one positive aspect of the event was the server who was ultimately assigned to our area. She told us that it was her first day on the job and that the company did not provide her with much guidance on the event and yet she still provided us with excellent service. I believe she could tell that we were frustrated with the company, and she went above and beyond to try to make things right. She was incredibly helpful and went out of her way to make the event special for us. read more

Ok. I do not like tacos and I do not like Tabasco sauce or anything spicy; but, I am addicted to the Barn's shrimp tacos and Buffalo Cauliflower! They are amazing! Whatever the secret sauce is in those tacos is the perfect combination of tasty goodness and a little creaminess. I can't get enough! And the Gorgonzola in the Cauliflower balances the bite of hot sauce. read more

Went here for the first time on a Saturday night. 8 of us. Of course, we expect it to be busy. No problem. We are patient. The slow service doesn't bother us because we talk and pass the time. Food is ok. Typical Bar food. Do not expect fine dining. First, my friend ordered the "18 oz" cowboy steak. Definitely was not 18 oz and over cooked mind you. Second, when he made a comment nothing was offered to make it right. No suggestion to recook it..nothing. The food is medicore at best. Third, Now, here comes the best part. We bring a cake to celebrate and cut it ourselves. When it came time for the bill, we were charged $1.50 each person ($12) for bringing in our own cake. We were all taken back, because we weren't told and we spent well over $300 not including the bar drinks prior to being seated, because another thing, they do not seat you until the whole party arrives, which is fine. Again, not in a rush. The $12 is not a big deal; it's more the principle of the matter. We didn't bother complaining. At this point, we knew none of us were coming back . Giving one star wouldn't even describe the awful experience we had the other day at The Barn. I have been eating at the Barn since I was a child and the service and food was always very good. (Mind you I am now 31) So Saturday we decided to eat there after pumpkin picking. It was my mom, family and my TWO year old daughter. They say us in the corner where there were NUMEROUS flies flying around us. When we asked if we can move our table because of the flies the staff nicely moved us but seemed annoyed that we asked to be moved. I'm sorry but as we eat dinner we shouldn't have to be surrounded by tons and tons of flies. I even went into the restroom where there was a mother and her young child and the young child was upset about the amount of flies filling this restaurant. We finally sat down and ordered our drinks and I quickly ordered my daughter a kids mea cheese burger. The cheese burger came out and I had a woof of a horrible smell (at first I thought it was the cheese). My husband and brother took a bite of the meat to be sure (after my daughter but into the meat TWICE) and they both almost threw up at how BAD the meat was. It smelt and tasted like ROTTEN meat. For those who don't know the smell imagine road kill I'm 100 degree weather. We I formed the waitress who was very kind and tried to make the situation better. She did spend some extra time with us. Yes I was very concerned and monitored my TWO year old daughter for 24 hours because she ingested rotten meat, but thankfully we told them because the issue was with the meat distributor that I was told. So apparently she informed the manager or owner and they were supposed to inform the meat truck from where they got the order. But honestly that was totally unacceptable! A children's burger rotten?! My daughter could of gotten really sick. Then the waitress gave my daughter free ice cream and really did her best to help the situation so she was incredible. I will never step foot into this place again. After getting a $250 bill my mother called the restaurant to really speak to the owner to express her frustration. She was told that "they can't do anything with the fly problem...." Which is terrible customer service that your okay with your customers eating in a fly infested restaurant. We were not looking for anything at all but being customers for over 20 years at this restaurant we enjoyed coming to has went down hill significantly. Aside our one server the service was just awful, very slow and the food is never warm. Let alone with our experience the meat was rotten I figured something to make the situation right maybe a reimbursement or a sincere apology? But nope we were TOLD there is "nothing" they can do. In a time where restaurants are hanging by a thread to survive. I am never one to ever write a bad review because I understand that some places have their off days, but I can't get over the fact that they are completely okay with my TWO year old Ingesting ROTTEN MEAT. There's plenty of other nice restaurants in the area that I would absolutely Consider going to than this place. Save yourself the aggravation and if my daughter got sick trust me there would have been a much bigger problem. Thankfully we are lucky. read more

Traveled an hour to have dinner here prior to seeing musicians we know who were playing that night and to have a nice dinner first. I had been here a few years earlier and had a good time at the bar, but we didn't eat. Have to say, I was disappointed with the food and the overall quality level. First clue were the menus themselves, which felt greasy and gritty. I ordered a chicken tender appetizer that seems like something that could have bought frozen at the supermarket - or 7-11. I ordered a craft beer that I wanted to drink out of a glass, and our server brought back a beer glass that was still wet - not like a frosted glass that was melting, but like a glass taken from the sink without drying it first. Other than that, the young man serving us was attentive and friendly. Good grade there, which bumps this to two stars. My order of Carolina BBQ Chicken was just "eh". The Carolina BBQ part was the blob of sauce added on top of the fried chicken. Nothing special about it. Certainly wasn't cooked in it. The three ladies I was with all ordered burgers, which no one was impressed over. During our meal, when anyone asked "how's yours?" the general response was a so-so head shake. I did see a pizza oven there, and many pizza items on the menu so i suspect the pizza is good here. If I am back which is doubtful for dinner, I'll order a pie. In short, we all had the feeling we could have a better meal at a diner or at most of the other bars we'd normally visit. I don't usually leave a poor review when i review here, but since all four of us left disappointed I felt I needed to. Message to the staff: Clean those menus! We like the food and service very much. The spicy chicken quesadillas are a staple of ours. However, last week we took another couple with us and my brother asked me how the fish and chips were. I told him not to order them as we never had them here and every time we order them at a restaurant in NJ they are usually (out of the box) very sub-par. So, they both ordered the Fish and Chips and as soon as the plates were put on the table, I saw that they had the real deal and I was very relieved. Fast forward to this afternoon, naturally I ordered the fish and chips. To my great surprise, I saw right away that I was not served the same Fish. The 3 pieces of fish were tubular, uniform, and about one third the size of the real chipper. So, do not order the Chipper. Everything else we have had has been very good. read more

I hate to leave bad reviews, especially for a place so close and promising, because I hate conflict. I've only ever ordered delivery from this place and both times they've messed it up thoroughly. They've forgotten items in the order. They've sent us the beef version of the all veggie nachos, which we had to throw away as we don't eat beef. We found bits of hard plastic in our salad. And that was only the first time we ordered! The second order I went for the veggie /cheese nachos again and the Szechwan cauliflower. The nachos had no additional cheese, they just left the meat off, and there wasn't even that much cheese for nachos. Half of the cheese was baked solid. Lettuce and olives were tossed on underneath. The whole experience was bad. The cauli sounded so good on the menu, but was even worse than the nachos. They gave me two giant slices from a cauliflower head with tons of stem. That wouldn't have been horrible, but it was thoroughly undercooked, so I needed a steak knife to cut it. It was stringy and chewy, and there was enough sauce on the bottom of the pan to fill a coffee cup. I tried them a second time because I really hoped that the first time was just a mistake, but both experiences lead me to believe there are some seriously under trained or just downright lazy kitchen staff. I was really excited to go to this place in person also, but given the quality of food I've experienced from here, I just can't justify it. read more

Since Re-opening after the Covid -19 pandemic the Black River Barn has implemented many safety measures to insure the customers are in a safe and healthy environment. The staff are all masked and ensure that sanitary measures are followed 100%. The food was amazing as always!! Maybe even a bit better then I remember or maybe we just appreciate it that much more. NEVER AGAIN I have been coming to the Barn since 2003 Having enjoyed the view and food. I have brought friends and family over to the restaurant over the years. I live about 40 miles out so it was a bit of a trip but even with the occasional error still worth it. Today I brought my wife and two girls a 20 month old and 4 year old. We came in about 11:30 and were seated by the water. There was a bridal shower under the canopy. We order drinks and when it took some time to get the drinks we decided to order everything at once. We ordered mozzarella sticks, Buffalo cauliflower, American burger, chicken Florentine sandwich, a kids chicken tender and mac & cheese. The apps came in about ten minutes. After an hour and 20 waiting for the entrees the kids are edgy as is my wife. I told her another ten minutes and we would cancel our order. During the same course of time other tables had come after us and had received their food. The only difference i could see between those tables and us was that we were Persons of Color which did not go unnoticed by us. My wife had to take our oldest to the restroom. We saw our server and told him to cancel the order. He told us due to the bridal shower the kitchen was delayed which to me is a poor excuse for poor service. Magically 10 minutes later the food came. Honestly at this point I didn't want it but since my kids were there I tried to eat. My wife and I noticed our food was luke warm and believe that it had been left in kitchen for a while. Having had our fill of this treatment I got the check and left. The Manager tried to make amends with a 10% discount. I would have preferred better treatment than a discount. Needless to say this will be our last meal there and we will not be recommending this restaurant going forward. read more

The bartenders Drew and Amza are the life of the party! They make every visit so memorable and fun! When they have conversation with me it's more invested than just your average small talk which is what keeps bringing me back! One night there was was a server in training to be a bartender his name is Grant (I believe) and he was absolutely amazing for his first night behind the bar! He was very social with a bubbly personality, I can tell he'll make it a long way in the bartending community! Him and my fiance got along really well and enjoyed discussing which gin was better LOL!! Highly recommend this spot for your next night out! read more

This is a great place to go with the family. We've been going for years and never disappointed. Not necessarily gourmet food or fancy service, but consistently high quality food. The regular menu is great, but they really do a great job with seasonal menus - both food and drinks. Just visited in March and they had a delicious corned beef and cabbage platter. In the fall, they had a short risotto special that was outstanding - please bring that back! Great Sunday brunch too. read more
