They high end aged steaks on display to give you a glimpse of the type of level they're trying to achieve. Ive been to Market Tavern a number of times, mostly for drinks and appetizers at the bar. Once before we ventured beyond apps and had the beef stroganoff and it was great! Last night, we tried out MT for its steak offerings, while sitting at the bar. At $70 a plate for ribeye on the Specials menu, we decided to ignore the sticker shock and go for it. The steak was seasoned well and served with mashed potatoes and mushrooms. Each side was tasty. It also came with a side of pseudo-mustardy bearnaise(yum) and barbeque sauce(why??). Unfortunately, the steak was VERY overcooked. Asked for it medium, it came out well done, and that might be an understatement. We also tried the scallops and shrimp with vodka cream sauce risotto. Scallops were very well handled... the shrimp (of which there were just two) were large but a bit waterlogged. Service was fine. Nothing much to rave or complain about. If we really nitpicked, they could be criticized for not knowing what a Greyhound is (seems pretty basic for trained barstaff) but #millenials...? All in all, I would not recommend this place as a "steakhouse " as they refer to themselves. Honestly, Longhorn cooks way better steaks (to the right temp) at a more reasonable price. However, the MT is great for drinks and apps, and even live music and bingo.. IF you can hear it over the group of extremely loud regulars who sit at the front corner of the bar. read more

I'll start by saying we have been to the Market Tavern many times and the food is decent. It's usually hit or miss as far as service is concerned. I was there a few weeks ago on January 31st around 5:00pm and sat at the bar. Me and my fiancé ordered two different sandwiches that came with fries. My fries were oily, overcooked and old. Clearly was dropped into the fryer a couple times. My fiancé had different fries. When I asked the bartender could I get new fries? She said that mine were hand cut and his were not and so I asked could I please get an order of the ones he has. Shortly after that, a young blonde girl came out with my fries. We were sitting in the center of the bar about where the beer taps were. This girl literally in front of my face while handing the plate of fries to the bartender took one of my fries off the plate to eat it. The bartender must have said I was sitting right there, and the girl threw the fry back on the plate. If that wasn't bad enough, the bartender hesitated for about 10 seconds before turning around and putting the fries down on the bar in front of me as if I'm going to eat food that someone picked off my plate and threw it back on. I don't think I would've been as mad if the female bartender made her go back to the kitchen and get a different order. She should have known better. If I worked for the health department, this restaurant would've been shut down. Unacceptable. And just a sidenote, I ordered ribs to go for my son and they came with shoe string fries?!?! maybe you should focus on one type of fry instead of three and do them right. read more

We had a private room for a retirement celebration for one of employees tonight. Everything was great - booking was super simple, everything was beyond easy on the day of the event. Linda was our party assistant and she was truly fantastic - kept everything stocked, cleaned, and did it all with a smile. We will definitely be back for more events here! read more

We had a great first experience at Market Tavern. Arrived ahead of the dinner crowd on a Friday. The place was buzzin especially in the bar area. We were seated quickly and Lynn took great care of us. The menu had a lot to offer. We started with wings, and had burgers and the fried chicken sandwich. Everyone enjoyed their food. My market burger was delish! My son also enjoyed the lava cake for dessert. There's an extensive beer list with lots of great choices. They were out of my first two choices but luckily I like beer and there were others to choose from. We're planning to go back! read more

Was there a week ago (not first time) asked for Long Island Ice Tea with very light ice. Did not taste the liquor, it was all coke/syrup, very dark, looked like a Guiness Beer. I used to go here when it was Kiernan's which is really dating myself. I've been going here quite frequently with my mom as I've been in Flanders more often. It's a great spot to grab a drink and some apps or lunch. I haven't been here for dinner but have very much enjoyed the times I have been there. Some of the favorites have been the spinach dip, turkey burger, grilled chicken sandwich and one of my faves, the crab dip. The service is friendly and usually the bartender is only working with one other server during the lunch hour so just be patient; it's worth it and they work hard. They have some fun inventive cocktails and beers on tap and wine by the bottle or glass. The ambiance is dark and mahogany with a full bar and a dining room as well as private room for events. They also have live music and bingo on certain nights. Great little spot for friends, co-workers or date night. read more

And that burger was $19.50! Chopped steak or not it needed to be better than what I got!! Nobody cleared the bar, nobody asked how my food was, JUST nobody cared. 3 1/2 stars! Located in a strip mall and the inside definitely looks a lot better than the outside. Dark and inviting with a very large bar & lots of TV's for sports watching. Dining room is tucked around the corner with tables that are spaced out. The menu was great - tons of options; meat is their specialty. However, their prices are insane. Look - I know prices have gone up recently & I go out a lot to eat & I've never seen prices this high for this type of place. We enjoyed our potato skins but really for $10.50 we should get more than just a 1/2 of one potato! Wings were delish and we split the cheesesteak which was very good. Would I go back......probably not because I can get the same type of food at least $4.00 cheaper. Service is horrible. Waiting 25 min for an order of nachos is just ridiculous. Good luck getting a second drink at the bar. Bartenders actually avoid their guests. We were pressed for time bcz of a concert, no one gave a darn. If you don't have 2 hours, don't bother. Professional sandwiches. I got a "marauder melt" it had sliced prime rib and ham and some smoked Gouda cheese and an au jus sauce on the side that was super delicious. The sliced prime rib was super tender. I also had some lobster bisque which I wasn't impressed with. Mostly just watery and broth with nothing in it , The French onion soup was pretty decent. Soups were expensive for what they were. The carrot cake was delicious. The fries that came with my sandwich were over cooked and tasteless but service was good. Went for dinner ordered a craft beer, tasted flat, then tried another beer from same tap flat , told bartender he said oh the gas may be out and walked away. Never changed the gas or offered an alternative . Then my steak wrap came and it was good but came with 8 french fries lol. What a joke. My fiancé and I decided to try this place for the first time tonight for my birthday dinner. Turns out it happens to be bingo night. The food was good and the service was great until the owner decided to start yelling and swearing at a lady doing paperwork at the corner of the bar. I would assume it was his wife or some relationship to him. Either way it doesn't matter who she was to him because no one ever should talk to anyone the way he talked to her in front of the entire restaurant, I heard about 7-8 F bombs in a 5 minute span while there was two family's with children trying to eat while listening to his vulgar language. My fiancé and I didn't even finish our meals we asked for the check, boxes, and while we walked out. The two other family's in the restaurant left at the same time as we did. The way the owner acted will make me never return to his restaurant. This was the most UNPROFESSIONAL experience I've had at a restaurant! read more

I was hired by the Market Tavern to provide live music as a solo artist about 2 weeks ago. I started playing at 8pm sharp, as I was there to play 8 to 11pm. 3 songs into my performance, the owner, Steve, rudely told me that I was done playing right then and there. He shoved a $100 bill at me (which was far less than what I had agreed to be paid for the night in advance), and when I tried to ask him if I could play something else or try something different in order to turn things around for them, he began raising his voice to me, reiterating that I was "done." I prepared 50 songs for them for that night, in addition to the fact that I've been a professional musician for 23 years. I have never had an experience like this, nor have I have ever been treated this poorly throughout my career. This on its own would be horrible enough, but as I broke down my entire PA system in humiliation in front of the entire restaurant, Steve the owner chose to sit about 6 feet away from where I was packing up while I was doing so. You'd think that a person would realize after embarrassing someone in that manner that maybe you should give them some space while they have to pack up and leave. Instead, every time my glance would meet his, he'd shake his head at me in disgust. Apparently, it's so incredibly awful to play Weezer, Cage The Elephant and Mazzy Star songs solo on acoustic guitar and voice as a mellow way to open the show, as I was asked to do by him and the other owner, Danielle. Finally, I had enough of this antagonizing, and I asked him why he was sitting there shaking his head at me. He proceeded to jump out of his chair, get in my face and tell me that it was because I "suck" over and over...and over. What an absolutely horrid human being. I do NOT suck. Music is a subjective thing, and tastes are different for everyone, but I have my bachelor's degree in music performance, have toured all over the USA, and have taught countless music lessons on many instruments, and have very successfully directed student and professional bands. I write and release my own music. I don't suck. Sorry, Steve. This guy kept going on me. In a calm and measured tone, I looked him in the eye and said that he should not be talking to me, or anyone in this manner. That it was absolutely unnecessary, and completely unprofessional. He countered that it was professional, that it was business. He was so afraid to lose any people at the restaurant that night. By the way, nobody left in the very short amount of time I played. He also couldn't take that I was willing to tell him how terrible he was being to his face, so he told me that I was "challenging him," and that if I challenged him, I was "going to lose." He wanted to fight me over this! How ridiculous! This guy is a lot bigger and a lot older than me. He was really gonna beat me up over music and the fact that he was super terrible to me for no good reason? Wow. I never once raised my voice to him or anybody else. I never uttered a single curse word. I was completely sober throughout this entire experience. Steve's buddies had to pull him away from me. I never say anything like this, because I always hope for the good in this world, but this place either needs to change ownership, or go out of business. This owner is the worst person I've ever done business with in my career, and that's really saying something because I'm in music, and there are awful people throughout the industry. If you are considering working at this establishment in any capacity, I would highly recommend you go elsewhere. If you are thinking about going there to eat or drink, I would definitely go literally anywhere else. Steve, you were worried about losing business. Because of your conduct, you now will lose business. Treat people better. read more

Sat down and waited about 10-15 minutes before a server ever acknowledged we were there. He explained that they were one server short. Fair enough. Ordered drinks (unsweetened iced tea) and food at the same time. We waited and waited. No one checked in on us. Server never checked on our order. Tried to get server's attention, but eye contact was avoided. Finally called server over and explained that we had been waiting 45 minutes for our food. Server comes back and says, "I'll be completely honest with you, they gave your food to the wrong table." Explains they can start cooking now. We weren't staying. I said we'd pay for the iced tea and leave. Server comes back and says they aren't charging us for the iced tea. I would hope not after this. No manager around, was told she wouldn't be in until Thursday - this was a SATURDAY night. This was our first visit and will be our last. Find it hard to believe that someone ordered EXACTLY what we ordered. When I told them this would be my last, they said, please come back our food is really good. REALLY? I I WOULDN'T KNOW. I sit there for an hour, get no food and you comp me 2 unsweetened ice teas, tell me you gave my food to the wrong table and that's supposed to entice me to give you another chance? PS I would have given zero stars but yelp wouldn't let me. read more

Food was excellent.My husband had the sword fish and the ginger calamari which was delicious I had the zucchini sticks and the turkey brie sandwich which was delicious with fresh cooked turkey. The Market Tavern has numerous food type choices to accommodate just about everyone in your group. Had a surprise birthday gathering of 15 close friends back a few months and the service was incredible for such a large group and my steak was amazingly delicious! Friday along with the juicy burger, I loved the chopped salad which has numerous happy flavors popping out! And the live entertainment was wicked sick as we enjoyed the sounds of The Outcrops, a rising NJ Band! I got 7 overcooked ( super dark brown, and subsequently, hard to bite through shrimp and some frozen French fries...my dinner companion who ordered a burger got fresh, hand cut fries). My "Coke" was definitely not a coke or Pepsi product, and I wasn't told this when ordering. It was a Sunday night and hardly anyone dining, yet the music was blaring. Friends and I travel a together for work a bunch and decided to try this place on a Sunday night. Service-Subpar. The waitress was OK, but very slow and seemed overwhelmed. The food runner however was awful. Throwing food down on the table and not seeming to care if it got on anyone. Food-Subpar. I ordered a steak and it was among the worst I've had anywhere. Meat was fine, but had ZERO seasoning. The Cowboy Ribeye had no flavor. It was tasteless. As someone who eats at Longhorn and Outback periodically, you'd be better off there for more flavor and less money. Verdict- I wouldn't recommend this place. read more

I hosted my daughters communion party here on Saturday. Spoke with Susan Quinn who is the new party planner for the restaurant under the new ownership. She suggested since I didn't have over 20 people I couldn't have the private party room but others have had a setup in the the main dining area and were happy with the setup. They would put up a room divider and put the tables together, set the tables with table cloths etc. I could bring my cake and balloons in the night before etc. I would pick apps off the menu and they would have them ready for us upon arrival at 2 pm. I dropped my cake, balloons and favors off the night before and spoke with the wait staff who was there to go over the setup etc. I also spoke with the owners, whom I personally know. I let them know I was having between 22 and 24 people on Monday which was a week before the party. Well we all got there and nothing was set up at all. My cake and stuff were in the party room set up for the other party that was in there. There was only one waiter assigned to the entire restaurant outside the party room. The party was given 3 waitresses in the party room. Our food was not ready and the tables were not set. We made the best of it and I went to speak with the owners who were having drinks at the bar. They jumped up and got things moving for me but the damage was done. I ended up helping set the tables for my guests while the poor waiter alone was trying to get table cloths on etc. My guests mingled until about 2:30 when the first apps came out brought out by the owner herself. As we were eating I was going to the bar to get new drinks, water etc and I was busing the tables by myself because the one waiter was so busy with walk in guests. I was very upset that my party wasn't given any attention and the one in the party room had 3 servers attending to it. The food was good as usual but so slow, half my party was done eating and the others had not even received their food yet, so I began serving my own cake to my guests. The kids were getting a little rambunctious waiting so the bar host gave us baskets of popcorn for the kids. All in all it turned out OK but I was completely stressed out by the lack of preparedness of the restaurant. Owners need to manage the staff better to make sure guests are getting what they are promised. I felt so bad for the one waiter. He worked his ass off and deserved the tip I gave him. He should have had help just knowing that there were at least 22 coming not including anyone who walked in. To have one waiter and one guy to bus tables is just not enough. Sorry guys....growing pains should be over...its been over a year since you bought the place. I wont plan anything there ever again and I like the place. I'm there often with my friends for apps and drinks. The new owners are awesome people personally, just need to get a grip on the running of a restaurant. read more

Stopped in her for dinner on a sunday night and it was an OK experience. They had a fairly big menu with a lot of choices, but the prices were a bit high. I dont mind paying a bit more for exceptional food, but nothing was that out of the ordinary. For $9 i was expecting a nice bowl of chicken noodle soup, but instead got a cup that was ok, but very salty. Maybe one or 2 pieces of chicken in it and hardly any noodles. My wife tried the butternut squash soup that was $9.50 for a cup and it was tasty, but reminded me more of pumpkin pie than soup. The bavarian pretzel was good, but they were pretty skimpy with the beer cheese. The nachos for $18 were disappointing. Service seemed very unorganized. Not sure if they were understaffed but the bartenders were also taking food orders and running back and forth to the bar. My wife ordered a mojito and it was undrinkable. They do have a large selection of beer, so if that's what youre looking for it might be your kind place. I can't say i'd ever go back again. Been here a few times now since another new owner bought this place. Place has changed hands more times an a dollar bill. Quality of food is very good. Wings are excellent. All homemade sauces. Menu needs to expand. Limited choices. Draft beer lines need a thorough cleaning. Ordered a Miller Lite draft and it had a skunked taste to it. It's unfortunate that the Chester/Flanders/Long Valley corridor has no great chef owned bistros. It's all pizza, taverns, & pubs. "Taverns & Pubs" is a stretch really. Those kind of make you think old neighborhood places. Most are just sports bars. This place was apparently owned by someone else & sold a month ago. They didn't even bother to change the name outside yet so it's confusing to a non local. If you go, stick with the burger. It's just ok. They serve fries in a fancy silver cylinder which I found stupid. With a slew of tvs blaring there's a lot of noise which is made louder by the wide open barn like atmosphere. This is one of those "get a beer on your way home" places. Nothing wrong with that but not a great dinner out. 2 stars for a smiling waitress. read more
