Great place for lunch. Food was good, service was great - super friendly people! Prices are very fair. Definitely would go back.

Really comfortable place with a very chill atmosphere. Basic breakfast ( fried eggs, toast, and ham) was simple and perfectly cooked. The pancakes are HUGE and super fluffy, a must. Not a very fancy place, but sometimes you just need simple food made like mom at home. read more

The server helping us was very kind and helpful. Unfortunately everything our party of 4 had was sub-par. Nothing tasted or appeared to be made from scratch. There are so many other really great restaurants in this cute little town, you do not have to eat here. Shrimp scampi tasted like uncooked wine. Breaded fish and seafood tasted like frozen food. Maybe the breakfasts are better. We would have been fine with a decent "greasy spoon", but we were really disappointed. read more

The food is horrible and the service is just as bad. I have eaten there 8 times in the last eight years, an average of once a year thinking each time that it will get better and it never does. The servers are rude and can leave you sitting there waiting for a refill on soda or water your whole meal. It would not be a big problem if they gave you larger glasses but they give you a glass that holds give or take 8 oz of water, and that is not enough for me or my family. When you call them over they act like they can not see you. Plus the food is just not that great. I'd rather waste my money somewhere else, even if they food is just as bad at least I will get better service. I will never give this place another chance. read more

I ordered the steak and mixed vegetables. It was more like mixed veges with really thin layers of beef on. On top of that I waited 20 min for the waiter to only come back and say they didn't have my first order which was beef stew. So I had to wait another half hour till my steak came out. And it was barely an adult meal. And so not worth ten bucks. Do not eat here service is the worst. Waitresses take forever to even give you water. Really don't like this place! read more

Went for lunch and ordered the special of the day (usually a good option - one a place is proud to serve) not here! Greasy and the "prime rib" in the Hawaiin stroganoff was kinda fishy tasting - not good at all. The waitress did take this disgusting item off our tab. Speaking of waitresses tho - ours was apparently late for work and "excuse me, excuse me, excuse me" she chanted as she pushed her way in the door, then she did the same again when she came up behind my husband (a handicapped man who could not move as fast as she wanted). The waitress sealed the deal with her haughty attitude towards all the diners - "Are you finished already? That was Fast!" spoken very LOUDLY to a woman dining alone. Then to an older couple asking about the lava flow viewing "You can't go there, They closed it." Well would it have hurt to explain it was recently closed for refurbishment? NEVER going back here and would recommend others stay away. read more

this is a low grade joint. Most everything comes from a can or is frozen. The sauces,graveys, hash ,mashed potatoes, vegies etc.....Nothing is made from scratch. Just ask. Theres a bar attached where the drunks start quite early. Its too bad because the space has potential. If only Robert Irvine could show up and show the owner how simple it is to have fresh and delicious food as well as much healthier. Just a little transformation with paint ,nice new booths,some art work,nice lighting and new flooring. The staff is OK friendly but the service stinks. One day I waited 20 minutes and still was never even approached by anyone . The people next to me said they had been waiting one hour for there food. I got up and left. Theres just no quality or love here and there could be if the owner had any passion for food or a nice quantity of clientele.Another Pahoa tasteless greasy spoon.UGH!!! Aloha, I am a local who lives on the Big Island of Hawaii. My family have been frequent patrons of Black Rock Cafe in Pahoa known for there good food and it's also reasonable price's. We had a very unpleasant situation at the Black Rock Cafe. We went into the restaurant for a bite to eat and when we finished we walked out to our car to find a person's truck parked right up to the side driver door. We could not get into our car and we then approached the waitress to find out who's truck that was and if they could possible move it over slightly so we could enter to leave the parking stall. The waitress was kind enough to ask the bartender in the BAR to ask if anyone owned a truck as there is people who need to get into their car. To our surprise, the person from the bar barged out started yelling out foul language and blamed us for parking too close to the white line in the stall. This women who was not able to handle the situation properly, screamed at my husband and swore that he parked too close to the line in the stall and that she would not move her truck and that it was our fault and she continued to be obscene and yelling while everyone was in the restaurant and bar looking at the scene that this woman was causing. It was very embarrassing to experience this. Were professionals and enjoy spending time enjoying the local establishments. If they can't control their bar patrons they should "BAN THE PERSON FROM THE BAR " as this women will hurt their business as well cause another family to experience this kind of treatment if she can't control herself. I want to make sure that all the public know that the person probably frequents that bar and is t. not a coherent individual and can cause future damage to another human being. This is not good for this local establishment. This was a terrible experience to go through! read more
