    Salmon Teriyaki Onigiri
    Cynthia J.

I love Black Sesame's onigiri rolls. They're incredibly filling because they're packed with protein and not overloaded with rice. My personal favorite is the Salmon Teriyaki. While their main location is in Fairfax, they also have pop-up locations Wednesday through Sunday at various farmers markets throughout DC and Northern Virginia. I usually visit them at The Wharf on Saturdays and Eastern Market on Sundays. The staff is always friendly, welcoming, and provides great service. The reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is the packaging. The onigiri is wrapped in plastic, and I believe the experience could be elevated with more sustainable and substantial packaging. Overall, the food is consistently fresh, satisfying, and worth seeking out at their pop-up locations.

For context, I ordered food through the Too Good To Go app (leftovers at a discounted price). Pickup was during a day/time that the business was shown as closed on the map apps. The store can a bit difficult to located. It is located on the first floor within an office building - plenty of parking. Access was available through a glass door in the side of the building, near the dumpster and package drop box. There is a sign indicating what number customers should call for the staff to come out. A staff member welcomed me in and brought me to the store since it was so cold outside, which I appreciated. It was cute inside and the staff member was so nice. Included in my bag was spam musubi, kimchi tuna onigiri, and a few other types of onigiris. They all were tasted good and can be a quick, affordable meal. They also included chopsticks, a menu, and a coupon in the pickup bag. I'd be interested in coming back to try more items from their menu.

I ordered food through the Too Good To Go app (leftovers food at a discounted price), so this review is based on that experience. The store is a bit hard to find since its on the bottom floor, tucked away in a corner of a large business building. The shop is super cute, and has a couple of tables for anyone who wants to dine in. It is pretty small and has a nice homey feel to it. The owner is super cute and seemed really happy that we had ordered some food from her restaurant. In my Surprise bag, I received Shiitake Mushrooms Onigiri, Kimchi Tuna ?? Onigiri, Spam Masubi, a California Roll with 1 shrimp nigiri. (Again, this was a Surprise bag; so please dont expect anything when you order through the app! Each order is different). -Kimchi Tuna Onigiri: 5/5 - it tasted delicious but I thought I was eating a Spicy Tuna Onigiri lol -Spam Masubi: 5/5 classic, salty spam with a good amount of rice ratio -California Roll: 5/5- I mean, it's a classic roll, tasted great -Shrimp Nigiri - 5/5, no complaints ---- My food didnt come with any wasabi and soysauce, so make sure you ask for some if you get take out. Luckily, I had some at home so it made the meal 100x better! This shop was so stinking cute, I would definitely come back to support the owners. Can't wait to tell my friends all about it!

Came to check out Black Sesame Rolls for their onigiri. There was parking for 30 minutes in front of the buildings. Black Sesame Rolls is located in an office building on their main floor. Once you walk through the main entrance with the blue cover it is towards the back in suite 102. The location is simple and clean. There is a small seating area where you could eat there but not for many people. They had about 4 chairs to sit and the counter to eat. I was able to order ahead and pick up for lunch. Although they do appear on the smaller side they were stuffed with the fillings. I had the chicken curry and teriyaki salmon onigiri which were both delicious. They have cold drinks in the cooler. You could easily order 2-3 onigiris for lunch! I saw an ordering station where you can conveniently place orders. This is such a nice spot to grab some onigiris for lunch. Will be returning to try other flavors and some rolls.

The food was excellent and the staff was very friendly. Prices were fair and I had a great experience. I will be coming back! There is very limited seating so I would recommend getting a to-go order. The store is inside an office building so it can be a little hard to find, but totally worth it!

    Torched salmon nigiri

I was immediately intrigued by the flawless 5.0 rating on Yelp and knew I had to see for myself--even if it meant rearranging my schedule to visit during their limited hours (Tues-Friday 10:30-4:00). And I'm so glad I did. This was the most delicious and generous bento box I've ever had, at a very reasonable price. This spot serves up Korean-Japanese fusion with real intention. The torched salmon nigiri featured a beautifully cut piece of salmon over a modest amount of rice, garnished with a smidge of green onion. The bulgogi roll was massive--closer to kimbap in size than a traditional sushi roll. The beef was tender and perfectly seasoned, with just the right balance of savory and sweet, and the fresh lettuce inside provided a crisp contrast. A coating of black sesame on the outside brought it all together. The shrimp tempura was absolute perfection--lightly battered, crispy, and still slightly warm. The pickup experience is slightly unconventional--it's tucked inside an office building--but once you're in, you'll find a wholesome, family-run gem that clearly puts a lot of love into what they do. HIGHLY recommend checking out if you can make it during their hours. I'll be back for sure.

I had the most wonderful experience at Black Sesame Roll! The couple who runs this place are an older Japanese couple, and they are just the sweetest people. They made me feel so welcome from the moment I walked in, and you can really tell they put their heart into every dish they serve. We ordered the combo platters, that came with one sushi roll each - we got the spicy salmon and spicy tuna (both DELICIOUS) - two ngiri each, and shrimp tempura. Everything was absolutely delicious. The sushi was fresh and flavorful, and the shrimp tempura was perfectly crispy. The quality of the ingredients really stands out, and you can taste the care in every bite. I will be definitely be coming back and recommend this place to anyone who appreciates authentic sushi and kind, attentive service. Black Sesame Roll has earned a loyal customer!

Definitely one of those hole in the wall places where you get the most bang for your buck - the sushi bento box has a large portion for $15! The owner was super nice and his wife cooking had so much attention to detail. I've always taken the food to go since, yes there is seating but it's more of a quick pick up cafe vibe where you can pick up lunch/dinner with a snack and drink. Definitely recommend for anyone looking for a quick go to lunch/dinner spot when you're craving sushi and don't want to spend too much money!

We had an amazing experience catering Black Sesame Rolls for my son's birthday party! We first tried them at the Vienna Farmers Market, and my toddler and baby devoured their onigiri and California roll in minutes. We also tried their kimchi (no msg!) and I enjoyed it all week. We loved the food so much that we decided to try their catering! I had some special requests, so I emailed my questions and they got back to me very quickly. They even prepared some samples to help me decide what I wanted -- including an off menu kimchi and spam onigiri. My mouth is watering just thinking about it! Since I was there around lunchtime, I also tried their bento box. You get to choose a roll (I chose eel avocado) and 2 nigiri (I chose torched salmon). It also comes with miso soup, seaweed salad, and another fresh salad. I thoroughly enjoyed it. They make everything with high quality ingredients and obviously a lot of love. They're a small, family run business, so I got to interact with the lovely couple (in person) as well as their daughter (via email). They were so kind, patient, and excited to help us with the event! On to the party, we ordered enough onigiri to feed a small army of toddlers and their parents We got a mix of salmon onigiri and bulgogi onigiri. The flavors were amazing. The rice was seasoned perfectly, and the fillings were fresh and delicious. They're quite large, and at $3 per onigiri, they're very affordable. The guests were so happy to have birthday party food that wasn't just pizza! Even before we finished setting up the food table, people were hovering around the onigiri platter asking if they could have one. They were a hit with kids and grown ups alike! Definitely check out Black Sesame Rolls - you can find them at their brick & mortar location (near the Fairfax H Mart), the Vienna Farmers Market (on Saturdays), or the Dulles Farmers Market (on Sundays).

Y'all. If I still worked up here I would order every week from here. It was delicious. Besides the rolls being crazy fresh, they are ginormous. I had to lean back and sip on my soup whilst writing this. 3 seat counter and carry out also. Just dumb delicious. Please support. Like if Keith Lee comes to NoVa, he should come here. Plus the prices are early aughts prices. Bruh

I come through this place to grab lunch whenever I want sushi for lunch. Service and food has always been 10/10. I recently worked with them to cater food for 30+ people. The customer service was top notch. The food was so good. Everyone that came to the party was wondering where the food was ordered from. The ordering was super easy and the staff was very accommodating. I ended up ordering an assortment of onirigi and rolls and made changes to the total up until a few weeks before the party date. On the day of pick-up (which was a Saturday afternoon, a day they are not open) the food was ready, packaged very neatly, and presented beautifully. Lastly, the food was delicious and enjoyed by everyone. I would definitely recommend coming here for a meal or catering to anyone in the area!

Hands down one of the best food discoveries I've made in Northern Virginia! I first found Black Sesame Rolls at the Dulles EatLoco Farmers Market and was immediately drawn in by their fresh selection of onigiri. I'm always on the lookout for quality small businesses to support when I visit a local market, and as soon as I saw the onigiri, I knew I had to try them. It's one of my wife's favorite comfort foods, and let me tell you -- she took one bite of their salmon onigiri and declared it her favorite of all time. That says a lot! The rice is absolutely perfect -- warm, fluffy, and seasoned just right -- and the fillings are fresh, flavorful, and made with obvious care. You can truly taste the love in every bite, like something passed down from mom's kitchen. There's a comforting homemade quality to everything they serve, which is rare to find. They sell out quick but do a great job of prepping multiple batches and deliver them to their booth periodically to make sure they're as fresh as possible throughout the morning. Since that first experience, I've made it a point to visit them every weekend at the Dulles market and can't wait to check out their storefront in Fairfax. They also have a booth at the Vienna Farmers Market, which makes it convenient depending on where you're located in NoVA. Beyond the amazing onigiri, they also offer a great variety of sushi, nigiri, kimchi, and even catering options for gatherings. Everything I've tried has been top-notch. The business is family-owned and operated, and it really shows. The team is friendly, warm, and genuinely passionate about their food and community. Whether you're a longtime sushi lover or someone curious to try something new, Black Sesame Rolls is a must. Highly recommend checking out their Fairfax location if you're nearby, or catching them at one of the farmers markets. You won't regret it.

Tucked away in an office complex, this place is a hidden gem. The sushi and rolls were made to order and super fresh. The owners were extremely nice and sweet. When you walk in, the small space *smells* fresh - none of that fishy odors or cleaning supply smells. The quality is top notch. They also give you a loyalty card. Buy 9 meals and the 10th is free! No seating here so its take out only.

Food was a mixed bag. We started with the yuk hae and mandu, which were solid but not particularly memorable. A note for the mandu was that it came out soggy and sat in water which was a bit disappointing for the price point. The meat quality was excellent though, with great marbling throughout the meal. The banchan leaned lighter in seasoning than I'm used to, but the broccoli and marinated quail eggs were standouts. I also appreciated the variety of salts served alongside the meats. My favorite was the volcanic salt! Service was where things fell short. We felt rushed or almost transaction for most of the meal, and it seemed like closing duties took priority over the guest experience. Tea refills took a while, banchan refills had to be requested multiple times, and there wasn't much guidance throughout the grilling experience. We had to ask what cuts we were eating and what each salt was. At this price point, I expect a little more storytelling and attention to detail. The grill also ran extremely hot, making it easy for some cuts to cook past our preferred temperature and constant smoke blew into the middle seat's face. A few tips: don't wear your nicest clothes because the ventilation isn't on the same level as Seoul Prime or Ingle. Make a reservation if you want a grill table, and don't be afraid to ask for banchan refills!! Would I come back for Korean BBQ? Probably not. I'd personally choose Seoul Prime or Ingle. That said, I saw several main dishes that looked promising, and I'd be open to giving the restaurant another shot. The foundation is there, but for the price and the hype, I think the overall experience needs a bit more refinement.

The meat quality here is extremely PREMIUM and every bite was super juicy, tender, and packed with flavor! I cannot stop thinking about the Baekdusan bulgogi because it was truly a savory MEAT MOUNTAIN. Our kind server gave us a pro tip to mix the sauce with rice. That completely changed the dish for me! The sauce soaking into the rice made it unbelievably rich and satisfying. I loved that the combos come with steamed egg and soybean paste stew, which were comforting sides alongside all the grilled meat and ban chan (kimchi, radish, etc) already at the table.
