I was in before dining began at 5P but got me in easily & got me a booth for myself & began with rolls (they little later than butter but wait) & had two rolls & then I got my entire which was a broiled seafood sampler featuring haddock, scallops & shrimp in garlic butter/lemon slice & though got through it because there's leftover seafood pieces in butter used the remaining rolls & a petite chocolate sin cake & perfectly for the finish. The last time I was in the Windjammer was about 3 yrs ago and I found the food and service unremarkable for a place that seems to have such a good reputation. I stopped in there early this evening as I needed a bite to eat and a drink after a long day. At the bar at the upper deck pub and I got adequate service. The bartender never asked me how my food was. (If she wonders why I left $3 on a $35 check, that is a good part of the reason.) If she had I would have told her the bacon on the wrapped scallops was burnt to a crisp. Knowing that if I asked to have it remade, the food on my plate would have been thrown out, I chose to eat it anyway. But the fact that 4 bacon-wrapped scallops was *$20* seemed really excessive even if it *had* been cooked properly. I also want to add that the smell in the air when I sat down was unpleasant. This adorable older couple near me gushed to her at the end of their meal about how great her service was and I agree! I was originally led to a table on the upper level and it was VERY bright (early bird special vibes - not that there's anything wrong w that). I asked if I could sit in the lower level. Typically that is mostly 4 person booths, but there was a half booth available to my delight. I had a draft beer (Hill Farmstead!), margarita, and a glass of Chianti (recommended by Lindsey) to go with my steak. Windjammer is always good. I go with a group once in a while for lunch. They are great about seating us, food is pretty consistent and staff is friendly. Parking is never an issue and they can handle large groups. I see a lot of the same staff so I think they are treated well which is important to me. I think a lot of people think of them for the special occasions (birthdays, anniversaries etc) but I honestly tend to go only when someone else suggests it. I find since the salad bar went away the value isn't as good. For example ordering a chicken breast or steak you get a starch. It used to include a trip to salad boat (which no longer exists). I understand the cost changes and staffing issues, but give me something green on the plate. Steamed broccoli or green beans or sautéed zucchini. For a steak/seafood restaurant I would expect a more balanced plate. Now you can pay extra for a side of veggies to balance out. That being said I have found my go to for lunch. The Rueben is good, and I love the Asian and wedge salads. $14 without protein, but still is satisfying. They are also one of the places adding a kitchen service fee of 1.5%. Ordered the $38 16oz ribeye medium rare... Hockey puck. More than well-done and clearly more like 8-10oz. So for the first time in my life, I sent the order back. The 2nd attempt was twice the size, but missing the cap, and RAW at parts. Worst part, it was perhaps the chewiest ribeye I've ever had in my life. Somehow the hockey puck version was more tender... I didn't have it in me to tell the nice waitress how miserable it all was, or delay my party. So left my party and went to Al's French fries for a burger because I was so livid and hungry. My party was onto deserts by the time I'd given up on trying to eat that steak. Worst experience I've ever had eating out. This place used to be good (albeit always overpriced). Ate at the bar at 6 pm on a very busy night last week (11/12). That was all good and congrats that business is doing great-love to see that. It was the one bartender (this large dude with a ponytail and for some bizarre reason a rudeness to me I can't explain) that kept asking the guy next to me how everything was and totally dismissed me. Was it because I was drinking water and not booze? Was it because I asked him about the burger "Special" on the menu and him responding "If it has garlic on it, it's good." I strongly suggest the bacon wrapped scallops. My wife got the French onion soup as an appetizer, and I got the scallops. Although there's nothing wrong with the soup, it was just not our cup of "soup". We sat at the bar with two bartenders on the upper deck. The one older gentleman should be fired. But the local patron seemed to really like him that's probably why they had a second one to back him up. I do not ever order shepherds pie when I am out for dinner. Simply because I run into more bad than good versions of my favorite dish. I have today my hats off to whoever cooked that shepherds pie. I dare say the best one I've ever had. As far as the bacon wrapped scallops, they are in a close contention for my second favorite ones ever. The restaurant, including the bathrooms, were very clean. We dined on Friday night 09/26/25 to take advantage of the September special. My guest had a house salad and all the greens were wilted, my Caesar salad was delicious. I had prime rib which was so overly salted (and I like salt) it was inedible, it was accompanied by an uncut baked potato. I cannot understand how the middle of the meat was so salty? My guest asked for a more well done cut or an end piece. What came out was gray and looked more like Chuck roast, it was so unappealing I cannot believe the chef would send such a dish out to a customer. I sent my dish back, something I never do, and had salmon. A bland piece of salmon with a tiny amount of Bearnaise underneath. No garnishes of any sort just meat or fish and a side. Overall, a very disappointing regardless of the price. Our server was lovely although inexperienced, which is fine. I can't say enough about this place! I'd called a few weeks ahead to book a reservation for a Friday night. I spoke with one of the managers (Nico). I told him we were a party of 19 -- he immediately said it wasn't a problem to accommodate us....I'd called other restaurants in the area--and they wouldn't book us because our party was too big. Unfortunately, I underestimated our party size and it ended up being 24 of us. The original room they put us in could only hold 20 people. We started to "break up" the party (and at least 4 people would need to be seated in a totally different area away from the main group). Nikki (the manager on duty that night) came up with an idea to move us all outside (even though we'd already opened up a tab at our current table). They worked swiftly to set up a table outside for our huge party. I'll be the first to say that our party was loud and rowdy! We weren't easy to deal with! Our server (Kelsey) was outstanding. She didn't mind our boisterous voices and "cheersing" our glasses every several minutes. She took our food and drink orders like a champ! We had several starters which were all outstanding! (--the lobstercargot is an absolute MUST!). All our meals came out at the same time and they were all piping hot. Everyone's meals were delicious. I got the broiled seafood platter--it was soooo good--each piece of seafood was cooked perfectly. Kelsey was able to keep up with our drink orders -- she didn't miss a beat! (Again, we're a rowdy group....our daughter's are on a college sports team and we tailgate together every weekend. This was our last tailgate weekend of the season, so were were feeling a little extra ROWDY that night!). Someone in our group was celebrating a birthday that night. I'd brought in a strawberry shortcake from an outside bakery. I handed the cake to Kelsey so that they could cut it into slices and serve it for us. I can't tell you how impressed I was with what they did. The cake had a "circle" of several chocolate covered strawberries on top of it. The staff sliced the cake expertly into even slices....but what impressed me was they cut the strawberries into slices assuring that each one of us got at least one slice of chocolate covered strawberry with our sliced cake. To be perfectly honest, this wasn't the first restaurant I called to try to get a reservation for our large party....we ended up there because they were the first restaurant to agree to the number in our party. We will 100% dine at the Windjammer any and every time I visit the area. The food was amazing and the service was absolutely top notch. This restaurant has figured out how to do it right! I usually do not write reviews this long, but this place is worth it, I promise! The ambience is exquisite, and charming. The food was prepared perfectly. We did get a special steak dish that was a 6oz filet minion with portabella mushroom cap, that had a Gorgonzola sauce I'm glad was served on the side, because, it could have been skipped altogether. The steak was seasoned perfectly and cooked exactly as requested. I ordered two different ciders from a local brewery that were dangerously delicious, and went down so easy, it was hard to stop myself. The three best things there though, in order: the bartender, the manager, and the dessert trio! I feel bad even saying the bartender was better than the manager, because, truly, these people are treasures! However, the manager gets to be a little removed and the bartender of a small, curved bar, has a little more difficult job, if you're going to really be great. He was better than great, he was perfect! His energy was masterful! He never oversold anything, or was overbearing or annoyingly eager, he just was perfectly present and attentive. He gave relative recommendations when asked, and anticipated our needs without feeling nosey. The manager addressed a concern (a wine taste that was off putting) subtly and respectfully, and chatted with us while finding other options. He was informative and respectful. NOW, about that dessert trio! My goddess, I'm so glad we got it! We were on the fence, we REALLY love crème brûlée, and almost got that but the Kahhlua mousse thing also sounded really good, so we splurged the calories. The third item was a peanut butter pie we wouldn't have ordered because it sounded so heavy, but was SO LIGHT and full of delicious flavor, and not crazy sweetness! The mousse was also much lighter than expected, with a velvety mouthfeel that dances across your tastebuds. The crème brûlée had the flavors in place but needs a different vessel. The container in the trio is too deep, making the custard the star of the dish, when the brûlée caramelization is really what you should get to focus on. All in all: an unforgettable meal, with service that should be envied by other restaurants, and the kind of personal touches you sadly can't even train. I rarely give a five star review from my first visit. But based on the crowd, the service and the quality of the food; I think the experience would be the same the next time. Upon entering there were two hostesses, one asked me If I wanted to eat upstairs or downstairs. It was such an odd question to me so I asked the difference. The upstairs is loud, is like a pub, and has casual foods ( like sandwiches and such); the downstairs is the nicer/fancier fare. Downstairs first date, special night, date night; upstairs been dating a month or more, married and have to eat quick for your date, hanging out with friends. Food: 5 stars. I had the New England Clam Chowder and their french dip sandwich. The chowder was the best I have had in a very long time. If I was local, I'd get it on the regular. The sandwich was also really good! This sandwich hits every category for me when rating a sandwich: 1 - the bread, 2 - the quality of the ingredients, 3 - does it stay a sandwich or fall apart into an open faced sandwich. The bread was tender, crispy and resilient; it held the ingredients even after it soaked up the au juis for the next bite. The filling was excellent, the right amount of meat-to-cheese-to-horseradish sauce! The fries were great too! Service: 5 stars. My server was quick, got my order right and was very friendly. While visiting Burlington, I decided to try The Windjammer. The restaurant is tucked off the road and can be tricky to spot without GPS. Very clean and nice looking inside of the dinning room. My waitress Kayla was excellent. I ordered the broiled seafood platter. There was good flavor in the scallops and Haddock. The shrimp were a bit tough, but overall it did have good flavor. The mashed potatoes it came with were excellent and had great texture. Over all I think this establishment was about what I expected. Good food with great service. What a rip off! We went to Windjammer on New Years Eve. This used to be one of our "go to places". back in the day. Last night I paid over $30 for two very small pieces of frozen crab in what they called Crab Cocktail. The bill for six people came to over $300. There was no flavor in the scallops with no promised bernaise sauce. The French onion soup tasted like dishwater and all the steaks were cooked to incorrect temp. I will not be going again. The food and service were equally fantabulous. The lump crab cake was phenomenal, and the clam chowder was dope. The haddock and scallops were incredibly delicious and well-seasoned. The ambiance was pretty chill, and the servers were very positive and responsive. The maple lemonade was also good with the perfect balance of sweetness. We stopped at the upper bar on our way to a show at Higher Ground and sat at the bar which was fairly full-a few empty seats in between couples. Our bartender was terrible. She was only attentive to the regulars, but honestly didn't even seem very friendly to them. We got our drinks pretty quickly, but she took quite a while to get our food order and that was after my husband had to "wave" her down to take our order. She never came back over to ask if we wanted another drink (even though our glasses were empty). I also noticed the people next to us sat with empty beer bottles as well. Finally the man working the bar came over and got us all another drink even he wasn't our actual bartender. In addition, the gentleman next to us spilled his drink and although the bartender picked up the broken glass, the spill was not cleaned up so a wet puddle of beer was on the bar the rest of our time. Once we were done with our meal, our dirty plates sat empty in front of us for too long. The food was good. House salad had way more lettuce than the other three veggies, but it was all fresh. We have been going to the Windjammer for 40 years. After last night's fiasco, it might be the last time. Since COVID, we have noticed a steady decline in food quality and service here. Last night, the baked potatoes were so cold, the butter would not even melt on them. My steak was barely warm. I asked for an additional Gorgonzola cream sauce, the server forgot to bring it. It seems we may not be the only ones feeling this way. Upon leaving at a little after 7:00 on a Friday night, the parking lot was half empty. Typically in the past, you would not even find a place to park on Friday. It is so sad to see the demise of another formerly great restaurant in Burlington. read more
