CANARD AUX FRUITS OU AU POIVRE (roast duck)

A bit pricey for Sugarbush, but totally worth it. Started with the soup de jour, eggplant and asparagus. I've never had anything quite like it. It was excellent, as was everything. Entre was roast duck with a stuffed tomato, red beets, and something of an au gratan potato. I like to save the best thing for my last bite. It was a bit of a toss up as to what that would be. It's unusual for the sides to be as impressive as the entre. The piste de resistance was our conversation with Chez Henri himself. He's a very colorful gentleman. It's out of character for me to recommend a pricey restaurant in a ski resort, but Chez Henri is the exception. Make this your splurge in Sugarbush.

Unbelievable! Staff was amazing! Food was delicious. Had the escargot, fondue, roasted duck, crème brûlée, chocolate mousse cake, and the puff pastry with ice cream. All were amazing, couldn't have had a better dinner up here!

Our server, Gibelle, was professional, welcoming, and provided us (along with her team) a smooth dining experience from start to finish. She also made sure that there was excellent timing on service throughout the meal. The food was outstanding. My husband ordered Steak Frites. I had the Tartelette de Champignons. Both dishes were delicious (I got to share a bite of the Stake Frites) The Tartelette was rich with the medley of mushrooms, beautiful pastry crust, and a rich blend of of eggs and cream to hold it all together. For dessert we shared Mousse au Chocolate and Taste au Citrion en Verrin. The only downside was we were so full, we could not finish them, The space is open and light with tables spaced out and benches around the outside. The whole space was clean, modern and airy. This is the sort of restaurant I would come back to Burlington just to have dinner here! Yes - I would include this restaurant on my "I would drive out of my way to eat here" criteria.

A sommelier helped us pick our wine and the jurançon sec by Cuvée Marie did not disappoint. They start you off with an amouse bouche of which ours was a cucumber and zucchini gazpacho like teaser. Lucious and fresh on the tongue. Great bread from local O Bakery with plenty of local butter. Delish. Fois gras was well balanced and I was surprised to have morels and other mushrooms on the side. Escargot was some of the largest and most tender snails ever. So good they concerted a non-believer. Lamb was cooked to a great medium rare with divine local vegetables. Dessert was on par with everything else. The chef came out to our table twice. His dedication to excellence is very apparent. Amazing food. Just go! You won't be disappointed.

We were seated immediately upon arrival, and our server greeted us right away. Since we had another appointment to get to, we let her know we were in a hurry, and she did a great job expediting our order. Our food arrived surprisingly quickly. My oldest son ordered the beef bourguignon, which was very tasty, although the mashed potatoes could have used a little more salt. My youngest had the croque monsieur and really enjoyed it. My wife ordered the curried chicken salad. She liked the salad itself but wasn't impressed with the croissant it was served on. I ordered the steak frites. While the steak wasn't the best cut, it was cooked properly and well seasoned. Overall, the service was excellent and the food was decent, but nothing really stood out enough to make me want to return. There are other restaurants in Burlington that I would choose to try before coming back here.

A palette-pleasing panoply of plated perfection, Michael's On The Hill puts "epic" in epicurean…read more The Farm to Table restaurant offers fresh local delights, served with carefully concocted condiments that complement--but never overwhelm--the thoughtfully selected appetizers and entrees. The delectable dishes more than make up for the limited number of offerings; there's something for everyone at Michael's On The HIll. My partner and I visited Michael's On The Hill on a Saturday evening in mid-March; we reserved a table for two after we finished skiing at nearby Stowe. If you want a table during the high season, reserve it early--space is limited. Andrew greeted us at the door and after escorting us to our table, handed us off to Heather, our server. Heather is a Professional Server and it shows: Throughout our two+ hour meal, she was available but never intrusive and conversational but never too familiar: She's worked at Michael's for more than two decades and knows the menu perhaps better than the Chef--her recommendations were excellent: Rather than pushing the highest-price menu items, she suggested dishes based on her knowledge, experience, and guest preferences. We started with the local Artisinal cheese plate--three generous cheese selections accompanied by apricot chutney, sweet red grapes, pickled vegetables, candied walnuts, and toast points. The balance of sweet and sour was superlative; the appetizer presented tastefully on a cured wood bark platter--two or three people can pick their favorites and mix and match flavors. The tasteful teaser was a trailer for the main attraction. For entrees, I had the Maple Glazed Duck Breast with Cider Duck Glace accompanied by sweet potato hash, Orange and Arugula salad, and roasted baby carrots; my partner had the special: Beef Bourguignon on top of a cheese polenta with sauteed spinach and a delightful Mirepoix ("meer-PWAH"). Beef Bourguignon is a classic French stew of tender beef braised in red wine--hearty, flavorful, and filling, this French dish is perfect after a long day of skiing. Executive Chef Hess' flourishes transformed the traditional dish into a magically delicious medley of complementary flavors. The duck was cooked to perfection: Soft, warm, and tender on the inside with a hint of smokiness--balanced nicely by the maple glaze and the cider glace. The sweet potato hash was actually small, sweet potato "cubes" mostly hidden below the citrusy salad. When I finally forked the sweet potato cubes, they'd soaked up the cider duck glace, detonating a cluster bomb of flavors in my mouth. We paired the smokey duck and stewy Beef with a succulent bottle of Andrew Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon, whose rich cherry-cassis notes and silky tannins enhanced the sauces and spices of our entrees. Micheal's wine list reads like a Great Novel--long, engaging, occasionally intimidating. Here's where Heather re-enters our Micheal's meal story: In addition to letting us taste an alternative or two from already-open bottles, her familiarity with the menu made our decision much easier. Finally, because I just can't say no to Tiramisu, we were presented with a generous slice of sponge cake soaked in espresso (beans cured down the street), layered with whipped Moscarpone cheese, topped with cocoa powder. We cherished a couple bites and asked to take the remainder home (by the way, Tiramisu is part of a healthy breakfast). Yes, Michael's On The Hill is pricey--with a 23% percent tip, our meal was about $275--but every bite was worth it. Find out for yourself.

I had every expectation that it would the perfect setting for a quiet dinner with a lovely view, exceptional cuisine and attentive service. Unfortunately, for a restaurant of this caliber, they did not meet the mark. Let's start with the good stuff. They have a parking lot which is really appreciated in Bolton Landing, NY. We were warmly greeted at the door and wished Happy Anniversary. We were seated on the porch (our choice of tables because there was only one set of two diners in the restaurant at 6 p.m. on a Sunday night). Off to a good start. I commented about the pretty dress the hostess (at least we assumed she was) who seated us was wearing. A sweet Jamaican gal who goes by "Skinny Girl" offered water and chatted with us (we recognized her Caribbean accent and asked her which Jamaican parish she was from). She was more attentive to us during the evening than our waiter, Owen (he was clearly overwhelmed handling tables on the porch as well as on the patio outside). To his credit, Owen was honest about the crab legs and we were grateful. Service was slow, from drinks to getting the bill. What really rattled our chains is that the hostess in the pretty dress visited diners at every table on the porch - sometimes more than once - except us. We felt ignored. Our drinks were very good. The specialty of the house (a cucumber concoction) was actually the signature drink at our wedding. My husband enjoyed it. My Blood Orange Martini was delicious, albeit $18 which I thought was more like NYC prices. Appetizers were good. I ordered the Escargot which was served on puff pastry with a light cream sauce. Delicious. My husband's Grilled Clams did not look to be grilled at all, and swimming in what appeared to be the same cream sauce as my Escargot which, because he is lactose intolerant, was a concern. My husband's Chef's Choice steak was strip steak, cooked rare as requested, and served over truffle mashed potatoes with asparagus spears on the side. While pricey st $65, he was pleased. I ordered the venison, rare ($41). What was served to me were 2-1/2 small medallions of which two were rare and one was seriously well done (could not eat it). Spinach was on the side. I would have loved some of the yummy truffle mashed potatoes that accompanied my husband's steak. Again, with no one paying attention to us, by the time our waiter came to check on our food, my husband was already finished with his meal. So Owen's offer to return my overcooked venison to the kitchen was not an option. I packed my dinner to go. We asked for an order of churros to share and two coffees (the espresso machine apparently wasn't working). The coffee was old and barely lukewarm. We asked for replacements. One would think that the kitchen staff would try to make up for their two errors and at least provide us with fresh replacements. Nope. They probably microwaved the first two cups. I did not drink mine. This restaurant claims to be rated among the top 100 in the country. We certainly expected better service and care worthy of their New York City prices. I've worked in the hospitality industry for over 40 years and would never disrespect customers like that, especially when they chose my restaurant for a special occasion. So yes, I was disappointed. Would we give Chateau on the Lake another chance? We have so many wonderful choices in Saratoga and Albany (which would have been the same distance). Maybe.
