Great food and look and feel of a French Bistro. Many great meals there when we lived in Mad River Valley.

For anyone who would like to experience their Disney fantasy, and dine with Remi from Ratatouille...please stop by Chez Henri. You will be met with a warm welcome, overwhelming smiles and your drinks, just... Ahhh ...hit the spot. ( if you got this far and couldn't sense my sarcasm... well that's on you lol) We waited an hour and forty five minutes ( we had made reservations well in advance).... And only received our "pre appetizer". Please don't waste your time, especially if you are hungry. I think they would have been better off if Remi the rat ( well for accuracy, a mouse in their case) cooked the food. Credibility would have been at least sub par. This is our absolute favorite place to eat when we are in the mad River Valley. It's a wonderful place to bring well behaved children who have a curious palate as you can expose them to wonderful dishes, such as escargot, bouillabaisse , frog legs, and other French classics and they aren't bombarded by an American children's menu full of chicken fingers and plain pasta. The food is delicious and very French and so is the decor and ambience. He won't get anything like this in America. It makes you feel like you're in Paris or Montreal. Our favorite dish is the Buz. I only wish they had online reservations, but other than that, it's my favorite restaurant. read more

A little touch of Paris ski on-ski off style (except no longer open for lunch, sigh). Cozy ambiance. Eponymous owner Henri Borell is gone (passed on to that big piste in the sky at a ripe old age in home town Avignon) yet partner Bernard and loyal staff, including Peter at the bar, carry on. Croque Monsieur, excellent soupe oignon gratin, steak frites, other favorites Francaise on the menu. Charming basement space with a cozy bar and a cavelike dining room with a hearth to keep the fresh bread warm. Ghosts of ski greats Erickson, Killy and Borell live on here. read more

Food was amazing! We got the 4 course meal and it was well worth the price. Place is very charming and service was great.

It's too bad this place didn't live up to all the wonderful reviews that brought my boyfriend and I into eat here on a Saturday night. I called in advance to make a reservation for 8pm, we showed up on time and weren't told why our tables weren't ready but just that they weren't ready yet and then waited to be sat at 8:40pm. I should've taken the hint. Not only were we suprised to see a prix fix menu when we finally were seated, but half of the dining area was closed with a large cloth placed in front of it, not the quaint French ambiance we expected to sit in either. We ordered from the newly launched prix fix dinner menu and were not served the fondue and bread dish until 30 minutes later. We waited longer and were then served the mussels dish, which was inedible, I received 3 mussels that weren't cooked and my boyfriend had 3 off/fishy mussels, we just hope he wasn't food poisoned by them. By 10pm we had had enough. With no acknowledgement to the fact that they were serving us our courses so late and spread out and no apologies or communication about any of it we felt like we were in the twilight zone. There were about 5 other tables around us whispering the same things, that they were fed up with waiting, the food wasn't good and they just wanted to leave and didn't want to even get their dessert. I don't write reviews like this ever, but I'm writing this because I wish someone else had and I had known not to eat here. Also, their new prix fix menu and smaller dining area apparently only launched two weeks ago, it would have been nice to be told that they were serving a prix fix menu only when I called and spoke to the host to make a reservation, this isn't printed on their menu on the website or anywhere. It seems like with all their changes, they aren't able to feed a smaller dining room of people efficiently with edible food and I would highly recommend avoiding taking any risks with this place. The host and waistress weren't apologetic either, real icing on the cake. Too bad all the restaurants close around here at 10pm, we missed our window of eating anything..I would give this place NO STARS if I could. read more

Absolutely not family friendly! Do not bring children! Chef came on out of the kitchen to SCREAM across entire dining because one child made one cry for 3 seconds! The child was basically unheard with the natural volume of the restaurant but one complainining waitress to the chef changed the night and our future with the restaurant! The Table next to the child sang Happy Birthday and was scared the chef was going to come out again to yell at them! We will never return after 15 years of going there. Henri passed last fall and God rest his soul, he would've never let chef treat his guests like that!!! Lack of any real management now. Poor waitresses who were all crying with the embarrassed and humiliated Mom. They're humans and Moms unlike the chef who is a snobby, snooty narcissist! we'll never return..... My daughter has multiple severe food allergies, but usually does well at French restaurants. The waiter was so rude here though. He cut me off before I even had a chance to describe her allergies and ask about options. He said they refused to adapt anything because they were too busy. He made her feel terrible. We've been told we can't be served at other restaurants when the kitchen is too small or they can't adapt things and we understand that, but this was truly rude and uncalled for. read more

A bit pricey for Sugarbush, but totally worth it. Started with the soup de jour, eggplant and asparagus. I've never had anything quite like it. It was excellent, as was everything. Entre was roast duck with a stuffed tomato, red beets, and something of an au gratan potato. I like to save the best thing for my last bite. It was a bit of a toss up as to what that would be. It's unusual for the sides to be as impressive as the entre. The piste de resistance was our conversation with Chez Henri himself. He's a very colorful gentleman. It's out of character for me to recommend a pricey restaurant in a ski resort, but Chez Henri is the exception. Make this your splurge in Sugarbush. read more

If i could give zero stars I would. Last night we were there with friends and the chef came out of the kitchen out of nowhere and absolutely screamed at a 5-year-old who apparently had made some noise...though we heard nothing at all! Everyone was a mess afterwards, still unbelievable that something like this could happen at any restaurant, much less one that is supposed to be a fine dining establishment. Even without the wildly inappropriate behavior of the chef, the place is underwhelming at best. Food takes forever and we've had more bad meals than good there. Goes without saying we will never be back. read more

Absolutely worst experience I have ever had at a restaurant. We went there last night and although the food was quite good I will never be back. Out of nowhere the chef opened the kitchen door and yelled into the dining room for people to stop screaming! Although the restaurant was quite loud since it was crowded no-one was screaming except of course for the chef himself. The entire dining room fell silent from the shock. The chef also made our waitress, Dierdre, who was absolutely wonderful cry as well. The whole experience was terrible and I think it's time for that chef (although he is a good cook) to retire. read more

Unbelievable! Staff was amazing! Food was delicious. Had the escargot, fondue, roasted duck, crème brûlée, chocolate mousse cake, and the puff pastry with ice cream. All were amazing, couldn't have had a better dinner up here! read more

We've been going here for 30+ years and have always had delicious meals and attentive service. The dining room is actually underground, but still warm and inviting. Amazingly, Henri, who opened the restaurant in 1964, is still there and often circulates through the dining room. Not inexpensive, but a wonderful treat now and then. read more

This is a great place - and I go as much as I can. It's open seasonally for lunch and dinner, it's family friendly and although it's a bit out of the way, you can ski to it. Make a res, since it fills up in season. I'm a sucker for the whole European ski thing, and this place delivers on all counts - ambiance, food, service. There's a bistro and a dining room - with two menus - I love options. Prices are what they are - and I'd say they are fair. The place is run by what looks like a pack of very old French men. I think Henri is on site too, shuffling around and cutting bread. The interior is a bit faded, but in a shabby chic, warm and cozy way, with a massive fireplace, nice booths, etc. We had an excellent dinner of wine, fondue, salad, beef au poivre, and several fantastic desserts. The salad rocked, and the sauces were all incredible and unique-green peppercorn, espresso cream, etc. There were no fewer than four delicious sides accompanying the entrees, but the portions were not over sized. Maybe I'll get in one more ski weekend and will hit this place for lunch. If so, I'll report back. read more

Had dinner here tonight and was very disappointed. Dinner for two was close to $150 and the food was just average. The service was unimpressive too. I was also disappointed in the way this place looked. It's a cramped, basement restaurant that is very tired and frumpy. There was a fake fire in a real fireplace. All the walls have mirrors draped with tacky white Christmas string lights. Sagging crown molding and dirty walls. This may have been a nice place in the 60's but it's time for a renovation or a least a deep clean and some paint. At these prices, it's time for Henri to raise his game. read more

Very disappointed. Henri is adorable and a great host but unfortunately his staff does not share his enthusiasm. Our waitress was a grouchy old lady who was less than happy to be there never mind caring about our experience. We were one of only 3 tables in the place and had to beg her to ask the chef about substituting a sauce. She seemed disappointed he said yes. We honestly felt like her red headed step children who she loathed being there. Very awkward and uncomfortable experience. Oh yeah and my 9 year olds son had 3 sprites in a tiny 8 oz glass and she charged us $3 a piece for each of them?!?! read more

Chez Henri is our annual pre-Christmas​ destination, and we love the place ! Last night, not so great. We've had family holiday meals there for five years, and we're local to the area. Last night there was good and bad, but the frustrating thing is that two of the four entreés were pretty mediocre. For a menu with main courses priced in the $30s, that is simply unacceptable. And one of the mediocre​ dishes was a seafood special...one would assume that a special would garner more attention from the kitchen. We do love this place, but feel that we caught an off night in the kitchen. read more

Solid 5 stars. My wife and I went for our anniversary and we were not disappointed. We shared the moules appetizer which was outstanding;; the best we've had outside of Europe! The amazing table bread was perfect for sopping up the broth. Then we both had the green salad, hers with goat cheese and mine with roquefort -amazing! She had the bouillabaisse that was absolutely delicious with a wide variety of seafood, all cooked to perfection save for a few pieces of squid. I had the filet bernaise, tender and flavorful. One of our best, if not THE best meal of the year.. absolutely worth every calorie and penny. read more

Great place, I highly recommend it for lunch. Get an Onion Soup, a burger and a glass of wine. It barely sets you back more than the lodge and it's totally worth it. Like dining in a ski museum. I'd be really sad if it was to ever close, Henri is the nicest guy in the world and Bernard is great too. They've had the same people working there forever so they're obviously doing something right. As far as Paul's review, there is no way that a four person party plus one bottle of wine could ever go for over $500 at Chez Henri. They must have left a very buzzed and generous new years tip or something, like 100%. The food isn't all excellent (but pretty good), and the staples certainly are. Stick to Steak au Poivre or rack of lamb if you like bistro classics. read more

So - Che Henri is a quaint upscale (pricey) little spot at Sugarbush. Best if you speak french and know Henri.... my entrance as a single dinner was greeted with that hmmmm no table for you look. All resolved, nice little booth in the bar. Chez Henri was opened in 1964 by the same man who owns it today! It is certainly an institution at Sugarbush. And it looks as if nothing has changed at all in 49 years! From the decor to the food to the wine. Some of this is very good, but some isn't. First, you are typically greeted by Henri, a warm and wonderful person who always offers to take your picture at some point during your meal. Everyone seems to enjoy that. Many of the waitstaff are well into their 50's and 60's, and have probably been there forever. Their service is great. The ambience of the restaurant is a throwback to another era, the decor hasn't changed but is quaint. There is a fireplace. Comfy chairs that don't match. Unfortunately the wine list is absolutely worthless in its descriptions, which is rather odd considering Henri is French. No vintages are listed and the burgundies have almost no descriptions whatsoever. Almost all of them turn out to be Jadot. Henri probably has been stocking Jadot since day one. The list is also not very good. The food is good. Not modern, just classic French simple bistro food. But many dishes are unfortunately Americanized, with the steamed broccoli and carrots on the side. Having said that, the onion soup gratinee is classic and well done. The duck I had this night was good, if not noteworthy. I really wanted to give this place 4 stars because I really like it, but the bottom line is that the food, while good, is not great. read more

One word, unimpressed. Came here with my mother and aunt, not to mention they have been coming here since we've owned a ski-in ski-out in Sugarbush for over a decade. They were ecstatic to be visiting again after 3 years of Covid and I think that's what made this experience even more disappointing. The wait staff was completely dismissive of our presence, it was almost a hassle to them that you were there. The only people who were attentive were Henri, the secondary manager, and a young French man who came over to our table with smiles and a good attitude. We had a grouchy older gentlemen as a waiter who barely visited the table and when he did he dropped food on top of other plates that had already been served as if he were in a rush. The restaurant wasn't even at half capacity so we did not understand the need to drop plates on our table and run like that. The lamb was extremely undercooked and when it was not eaten we were met with a " was something wrong?!". Yes, the whole experience was wrong, this place had amazing food but the people serving us ruined that. If you are in the area, I would recommend elsewhere if you are looking for a fine dining experience. read more

We enjoyed our dinner last night! The French Onion soup was perfect- so yummy and authentic. The fondue is a must have- great for sharing as an appetizer. The service was fantastic- they filled our water glasses every 10 minutes. I got the veal and it was truly special. We all finished our plates but it was the perfect amount. We couldn't resist the dessert- got the creme brûlée and this layered cake that they invented. That was amazing. You will enjoy the atmosphere as well. A special gem in the valley. read more

I think Chez Henri is the reason we're doing our annual trip to Vermont this year. Don't get me wrong -- in itself, it's great, but not worth a trip across the country. But each year on our first night in Warren we have dinner in Chez Henri, and that dinner has come to embody our annual ski trip, one of my family's few traditions. The restaurant with its low ceilings and dimly lit dining room, the wood fire, the relatively few other diners, the tasty appetizer on a table lit with candles (the candleholders are elaborate, and we play with them every year more than is probably appropriate for men in their 20s), the wine, the banter with my brothers that amuses and occasionally irritates my dad, the tasty main course, the warm desert always paired with a port or muscat, all of that I remember when I think of Sugarbush, and all of that I look forward to and wouldn't give up. read more

Chez Henri is a trip back. Not to when it opened in in the early 1960s, but to 1940's Paris after the liberation. The warm decor is that: "warm." Not Hip Hop strobelight contemporary. Classic French music of the period and jazz are played to set the stage "for somewhere else." This is a WARM, welcoming place and a romantic state of mind rarely found these days run by passionate people who actually LIKE their customers. The reviewers who shot it down need to be actively discredited. They might eventually understand the concept of romance. They should have stayed at college-appropriate-age Kilington. Sugarbush has always attracted a more sophisticated crowd. FUNNY STORY We were late coming up late one weekend, too late for regular service. We called to order two plates of oysters and ducks at Chez Henri for pick up TO GO. The voice at the end of the phone said no problem. We stopped, got our late full orders and they served us there. A class act. We have been coming to Sugarbush for many years as adults. One learns the difference only with experience. Sugarbush is one hour north of Killington. Henri and Bernard are the co-owners and are the genuine articles. For a place to survive this long (since the 1960s) they know how to please the reasonable and knowlegable. FOOD: Classic excellent Bistro. Starter with great local bakery RED HEN SOURDOUGH BREAD FROM THEIR REAL FIREPLACE. Escargot, occasional sardine specials, THE BEST DUCK ON THE SUGARBUSH MOUNTAIN, both Fruit and Peppercorn, rack of Lamb, etc. Incredible multiple vegetable courses, such as carrot and apple puree, red cabbage with juniper berries, potato tart and haricot vert accompanying one course. BEVERAGES: Excellent budget French wine list and BOULLION ROUGE for lunch. Boullion Rouge is a unique in the USA beverage that is hot tomato juice / beef bouillon drink to warm you up after a morning on the slopes. You are not here because you want to order a 1990 Montrose, but they do have some good bottles. They are FRENCH! They know wine! (Lunch is compromised mid-week in FEB 2013 due to construction. Lunch is available Fri-Sun. Call to confirm. Desserts are very good classics, creme brulle, etc. Most of the servers have been here for years, friendly and competent. That tells the story. Some have gone on to manage the most expensive venues in town. What a great little place. It is tucked away warm and friendly, and the food was very delicious! This little restaurant is a staple for more than many reasons, the staff is extremely knowledgeable and educated about the menu, and the atmosphere is so unique! We were also lucky enough to reserve a table by the wood burning fire, where the owner himself (Henri) took pictures of my boyfriend and I by the fire. Definitely make it a point to have dinner here if you are at Sugarbush Mountain. read more

I get that the other reviewers gave 5 stars because its a tradition, but don't go thinking it's a top notch French Restaurant. The decor is Vermont quaint, but could use some serious updating. The food was okay, but not 5 star. I know my opinion shouldn't take into consideration outside influences, but there was a party of five cackling in my ear my whole dinner. Drunk Cackling. Is that how you spell cackling? Anyway, it really ruined the mood for what was my birthday dinner. I think that everyone was glad to see them leave, too bad it was when we were having desert. I had the bouillabaisse, and thought it was flavorless. It was served with a dish of 2 aioli type things and some cheese. Maybe I was supposed to add them to the broth? Would have been helpful to know that. There was also a small plate with a scoop of some delicious potato gratin (I could have eaten a plate of it) 2 broccoli florets, 2 slices of carrot and some kind of pickled cabbage? I felt that the prices were a bit high for what you got. All in all, wouldn't really recommend it, and wouldn't go back. There are too many other places to go! read more

I would actually give Chez Henri a 3.5. The ambiance is warm and charming. The food is good but slightly eclectic. The portions were moderate in size, perfect for me but my husband was not full when we left. We brought our children ages 9, 15 and 17 and they had a very nice children's menu for my youngest and the children were welcome at the restaurant. The service was fine and Henri was charming and enjoyed taking our family photos for us. I would go back again if I were at Sugarbush. read more

I'm puzzled why some people like this restaurant. When we went, the food was bland and completely overpriced (over $500 for a meal for four people with one bottle of mediocre wine). They seem to be trading off their location in Sugarbush Village; I'm not sure that anyone would go there otherwise. We would definitely not return and, in comparison to so many other places that we visited, came away feeling ripped off. I would rate this restaurant with no stars if that was possible. read more

One of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. Arrived at 1pm for a lunch reservation, and waited awkwardly in their front bar area for nearly 10 minutes being told "someone will be right there" before finally a host showed up. Once seated, we waited another 10 minutes before a server even appeared at the table just to say "I'll be with you in a minute." Once we ordered, we sat and watched the time tick by. After 45 minutes we had to flag someone down to even get some bread since at this point we were starving. At 2pm they finally brought 2 soups -- and then came back later to say they were still making another person's starter salad. At this point I gave up and had to leave to find food. We are talking about lunch at a ski destination where most people want to hit the slopes after, and we waited over an hour for two bowls of soup. Avoid this place at all costs. Wow. Just Wow. Great French food. Good service and a friendly bistro atmosphere. Escargot were tender and in a delicious sauce which even my picky kids tried and loved. White truffle pheasant with fois gras was amazing. Deserts all superb and the wines were good. Best place to eat well on the mountain. read more

One of the best restaurants in the area! My fiance and I got a table next to the fireplace with big comfy leather chairs. The warm sourdough bread they bring out is so amazing. We got the cheese fondue to start and the chef made me a vegetarian entree that was so good. My fiance got the crab cakes and loved the sauce served with them. The restaurant is cozy, romantic and Henri the owner was really sweet and took pictures of the two of us. We will definitely be back!! read more

After many visits to Sugarbush, I finally had the chance to visit the fabled Chez Henri. Henri, the original proprietor since 1964, greeted us warmly with "Bonsoir" as we walked in to this time capsule of a restaurant. The decor was straight out of a bygone ski era, something I appreciated since it reminded me of my youth, and we were seated next to the crackling fire in a massive fireplace that looked like it belonged in a French chalet. I wish I could say we were blown away by the food, but sadly it was disappointing. The $42 rack of lamb was quite tough and bland and the duck was flavorless. The cheese fondue was accompanied by cubes of the same dinner bread and nothing else. The pastry in the profiteroles seemed almost stale. Go for the experience, but not the food. You will enjoy Henri's company and the pleasant service. read more
