Loved the atmosphere and the food was good. We had the Poutine, Steak Frites, and Scallop Risotto. There was something I liked, but also didn't like about each. The Poutine was really heavy on the caramelized onion, but the pork belly and curds were great. The Risotto was just ok, though the scallops were well seared. The steak was probably the best prepared, but not anything I'd have to have again. I think another visit is in order, because I really did enjoy the space and cocktails. Ya know, I am sitting in the middle on this place. The lady loves it, but here is what I think. Beer selection is the same as every other bar in Milwaukee. You really suck as an establishment if you have a poor selection of beer in this town. I have had both the cucumber collins and strawberry gimlet. I was not a fan of either. The cucumber collins I think I would have enjoyed if it had plain vodka in it (it comes with grapefruit flavored). I just thought the cucumber and grapefruit flavors clashed. The lady loves the strawberry gimlet, Again, I didn't like the flavored vodka (vanilla in the gimlet). Just not my cup of tea I guess. Food. Well, I absolutely love the Onion, bacon, cheese dip. LOVE. Not so good, mac n cheese curds(?) I think is the name. Meh, seemed like something I could get anywhere. Also, not a big fan of the Red Wooster dog. The chipped beef I didn't think was very good. I liked the cheese sauce, but it overall was just too big and messy. The bun fell apart. It should come with a warning on how big it is. Also had the calamari, liked it a lot. Definitely would order it again. Decor/Ambiance. I like the interior alot. Nice, clean, bright. Wines. Well, we picked this place because of the City Tins, and I was happy eating there. The crowd is dressy, though our jeans and 1 year old were welcomed warmly. There is a nice beer list (this is a common theme in Milwaukee!). I wish the menu was more extensive. I got the Southwest Caesar which was not a huge serving, so don't get it if you are hungry. I requested to add grilled chicken to this salad and the chicken they served was just not right. I pulled a move I hardly ever ever do and sent it back to be cooked more thoroughly. Even then, I only ate a bit more of it. It was just off. My husband said the burger was good. I liked this place's ambience- casual cool I would say. I liked our server and the patio as well. Interesting new concept for a self serve wine tasting tap bar. You get a card to swipe when you pick your wine and amount of pour (quarter, half or full). Pay at the end. Nice ambience for a night of wine. I found most traditionally savory items on the menu to be modified sweet versions, which was odd to me. So even if I was hungry for a snack, I ended up jut ordering a regular dessert, one with Nutella and fritters and ice cream. All in all, the wine collection is pretty decent and the ambience is great. So, for the wine lover, definitely worth going to. read more

This is a great place to come for a few drinks, but as I found out tonight, not a place to dine. My friend and I arrived for dinner. We came here for a fish fry we saw one listed as being here online. When we sat down, we realized they really didn't have a fish fry. We figured we'd stay and eat anyhow. The server was okay, not pleasant, but not rude, she took our orders, and we sat and talked for a while. And then, didn't see the server so my friend went to the bar to get another drink. We continued waiting for our food. The place was not busy for people ordering food... mostly people drinking, so we were not sure what was taking our food so long. Our two top table was maybe two inches apart from the next two top table. The men at the table next to us actually received our food on their table from the food runner. We realized the mix up, and the men passed us our food. Our food was average tasting, I got a burger, and my friend ordered some kind of fried chicken sandwich. After we were done eating, a different food runner tried to give the men next to us another table's food order. We then started speaking to them, and realized they had ordered their food before we even got there. (this had been well over an hour by now). Their food finally arrived. Two burgers. The one gentleman had to send his back, since it looked like a hockey puck. I think the kitchen may have actually forgot about it while it was on the grill the whole time... Maybe 10 minutes later a manager approached them with a cheese plate, apologizing for the mistake, and offering to buy them a drink or desert. The one man was not eating his burger as he was waiting for his friend to get his re-cooked burger so they could eat at the same time. At least 15 more minutes go by. My table and their table were starting to chat, and this experience was becoming pretty ridiculous, so we were all laughing about it. A different manager approaches their table. She said she was very sorry, but they ran out of burgers!!! Said the rest of the burgers were frozen. (side note: I was surprised to hear they were not fresh). This is now at least 25 minutes after he sent the burger back because it was burnt to a crisp. The gentleman then ordered a plate of muscles... which by the time my friend and I left, had not yet arrived to their table. The food experience here, and the dinner service here was horrible. However, it did make for a hilarious dinner experience. We were laughing very hard with the other table as their food misfortunes just kept coming. To sum this up: I will never eat dinner here again. It did end up being fun, much to the part of the continual comedy of mistakes. I would go here for drinks.. but definitely not for food. read more

When you walk in the atmosphere is more of a mood setter which is nice, you sets yourself, which from experience can be a little tricky, but the waitress actually noticed us right away and gave us menus. Our waitress....was amazing....she really made the effort to make you feel comfortable, and to some how relate to everyone. She always had a smile on her face. It was refreshing! Here's it's a small plate, pass it around, restaurant. The only thing is the small plates are huge!!! But it was sweet! We ordered a bottle of wine since it was happy hour for wine all night! Half off? On wine? Yes please!!! Our waitress wasn't really familiar with the wine selections that they had but helped is the best way she could! Now one of the girls with me was vegan, and this place....not so vegan friendly, but our waitress asked the chef if there was anything he could make or recommend. They macaroni and cheese was to die for!!! The hummus was delicious! The tator tot nachos....sooooooo good!!! At the end of it all we were stuffed! But you can't skip out on the dessert! They were out of one of there desserts, so we ended up getting the two they had, since we couldn't decide on which one we wanted! So we got the chocolate brownie with Carmel, and the sorbet. I about died with both! The brownie was warm and chocolatey, and delicious none the less, and the sorbet was sooo fresh! And refreshing! I would have to say the only disappointment was the poutin. While I've had drinks at Black Sheep a few times, last night was my first time trying the food and I will say I was for the most part impressed with the food. We were seated at the bar and the service was just plain excellent. Great cocktails, nice laid-back atmosphere. We tried three items here. The truffle popcorn is exactly what it sounds like, popcorn popped in truffle oil then seasoned with truffle salt. It was light and delicious. I'd take this over any theater popcorn, including the wonderful stuff at the Oriental and Downer Theaters. We moved on to the pork cheek with salsa verde, plantains, basmati rice, jicama, cilantro. Pork cheek is a real treat when you can find it. It resembles beef short rib in texture and flavor. This one was nice but while its preparation implied Caribbean treatment, the salsa verde was too tame and the meat needed salt. Fortunately I had a bottle of Caribbean curry hot sauce with me. It was total coincidence, but it really did add a nice kick to this dish. Next up was a dish that is very popular these days, Brussels sprouts with parmesan. It was delicious although the portion a bit scant. Overall, we really liked this place and will be back. read more

First impresssion of Black Sheep is that it's a hot and trendy spot. Velvet rope outside, valet parking on weekends and a modern interior with exposed cream city brick walls. What drew my friend and me to Black Sheep was the wine on tap bar. Having said that, I believe we both had an idea that the bar/restaurant would be more sophisticated in both ambience and food selection. The music was hip-hoppy, even though they were doing a Studio 54 theme for Halloween. I get the impression that the music selection is all over the map just like the menu. We ordered the calamari and the meat and cheese plate. Both were meh! The breading on the calamari was falling off before we could stab one on a fork. The bread that came with the meat and cheese plate was dry and coated with oil, salt and pepper. Just warming the bread would have made a nice touch. The cheeses were very good but, the salamis that came with it were kind of disgusting. When our server came over to ask how things were going, we asked if she wanted an honest answer so we told her all of the above. To her credit she handled the critique very well and was extremely accommodating. If we all worked with people with this level of customer service, we would all be highly successful. She immediately asked if we wanted replacement appetizers and then offered to buy us our next drink. Only after we got our bill did she mention that she took off the meat and cheese plate. NICELY DONE! We were not asking for either solutions but, she was pleasant and hoped that we would return to a better experience. I think Black Sheep sufferers from an identity crisis. Is it an upscale bar, is it a wine bar, or is it a bar/restaurant? Even within these categories the message would be very unclear. I think a standard bar is very different from a wine bar. The space is beautiful but, that also sets the expectation level pretty high. The food needs some work. My husband and I came here for Valentine's Day. We were in town for the weekend from the Chicago suburbs. We are giving 3 stars just because the food was pretty good. It's the experience that was lost on us. First off, we are wine drinkers and the self serve wine machines (although innovative and good in theory) were aggravating. The smaller pours were the size of a free taste you'd get from the bar, and cost $2-$5 roughly. Rip off. The next size was double in price and still extremely small and not even a full glass. We didn't find the wines to be exceptional in taste, so the price was that much more disappointing. I would suggest having wines by the glass as an option from the bar, as well. Otherwise, you're stuck with the machine or purchasing a bottle. Secondly, the manager or owner came to every table to talk and see how things were, except ours. We had the wrong dish brought to our table because our waitress put it in wrong. My husband ate while I sat and watched, until my correct dish was prepared. You'd think we'd be the first table the manager would stop at. But it felt like he was avoiding us, actually. Overall, not the best experience for us. read more

Overall, this place offers something very similar to the Bangers & Lace model I am familiar with in Chicago. We came here for Sunday brunch and were super happy that the place wasn't packed but we soon found out why. The brunch menue had very limited options and then on top of it all, our weitress informed us that 3 of the menus items they were out of. So that left like 4 options. I went with the classic option(eggs, toast, hash, bacon) on the menu, can never go wrong with that. I ordered my eggs over easy but It looked like they came straight out of the shell and skipped the cooking part. Our weitress was not very friendly and looked like she was doing us a big favor by serving us. I honestly expected more out of Black Sheep and that one star is simply for their interior. I would go to ihop or Denny's any day instead of here and pay half the price for my eggs to come out the way I want them and a nicer staff. read more

I don't typically go out on a Wednesday night, but I was in the neighborhood with friends and had heard good things about this place (it's been open two and a half weeks). I'm very glad we stopped in. The atmosphere is fantastic. Great attention to detail in the design. One of the owners, James, was tending bar and was great. Attentive, informative and easy to talk to. We intended to pop in for one drink and wound up sticking around for the evening. My friend and I split the edamame potstickers and they were delicious. The wines don't disappoint either. Our male friends really enjoyed the beer options. We requested a couple off-menu cocktails and they were made perfectly. My wife and I went here Friday for brunch. She ordered the chicken and waffle, while I had the biscuits with duck gravy. The potatoes along with the biscuits and gravy were perfectly done and had the exact right amount of seasoning on them. Both dishes were absolutely fantastic. We both ordered their Bloody Mary. They were missing a key ingredient (Worcestershire), so the taste was just a little off. They did run out and get some, and "filled us up" after that. Veggie Risotto? More like Veggie Risot... oh! As in, oh man is this stuff good! For a carnivore, the richness and heartiness of Black Sheep's risotto almost stops my caveman-like craving of a thick slab of roasted red meat. Almost. To satiate my more primitive tastes, I've also tried Black Sheep's Beef Osso Bucco. This bone-in shank is served in a bowl with tagliatelle, red sauce, parmesan, and parsley and it's soul-satisfying delicious. I could go for a bowl right now... and I'm writing this at 8:00 AM in the morning! Black Sheep is in a cool space in Milwaukee's Third Ward neighborhood. I like the long bar in renovated cream city brick building. I watched the daily progress of the refurbishment of this structure a few years ago and I was amazed at the final result. It's very well done. You know what is also very well done? The Tuesday night wine special. Bottles of wine are half off on Tuesday nights! That means you can share a Veggie Risotto, an Osso Bucco, a dessert and a bottle of fine wine for about sixty bucks! That's a heck of a bargain for such high quality grub. The menu has changed a lot at Black Sheep. The first few times we went there which was over a year ago the menu was fun, approachable and unique. We went there on December 30 and it was really busy but we got seated right away. The music was loud to the point that the other patrons were shouting to talk which made it really hard to talk and hear. When we first got seated we didn't have a waiter. It took a little bit for someone to come by to actually get our drink order. I think she predominately worked in a different section of the restaurant but she was pretty absent for most of the night. We ordered the cheese plate which was probably the best part of the meal. 3 cheeses, 1 of which I really liked and 1 that my girlfriend really liked and 1 that was a little so-so. She ordered the friend chicken w/ mac and cheese (side note, it's on the To Share section of the menu but it's a full blown meal like anything else). You get two large pieces of chicken that are covered it what looked like and tasted like a sweet and sour sauce. The flavor was pretty good but the texture was a little off - it just wasn't very firm which to me is what I think of when I think of fried chicken. I ordered the burger and it just wasn't very good. If you want a really good burger go a mile down the road to Merriment. This was just very vanilla, not a lot of flavor, kind of forgettable. The bun was a little burnt in a bad way, really the best part was the cheese (good cheese). The fries looked like they were going to be good. Good texture, bland flavor. After we were done it took 30 minutes to get the bill, which is a huge pet peeve. The whole eating experience took forever and not in a good way. Irregular check ins, and that bill process was just the worst. And the meal was really damn expensive for a pretty basic order. 2 beers/2 wines, 2 entrees, 1 cheese board = $90ish dollars. I started my night opting from the wine bar and going straight to a spring like drink, called the Cucumber Collins. I have to say, I ordered a few more because they went down so well. We started out with Tater Tot Nacho's and Meatballs with polenta. The tater tot's had a good crisp texture and were very warm upon arrival. The meatballs I found a little bland and not as warm as I would have liked. My main and one of their signature dog dish, the Woster Dog. Great toasted bun with the mixture of arugula, fig, and balsamic gave me the salty sweet meal that I was looking for. Wait staff was super friendly and prompt. The atmosphere was great, the service was great and the food was, you guessed it, great! I had the Rosemary Grilled Lamb Chops and oh man was it to die for! So juicy and cooked to perfection at medium. My boyfriend got the Seared Diver Scallops which were equally delicious. I would have given a 5 star but the portions were on the smaller side. The original cocktails were just the ticket! I indulged in a Elderflower Old Fashioned, love me some St. Germain liquor. They even have a wine wall that you swipe a card for a sample, 3oz or 6oz pour of your choice. The card amount then gets added to your total bill for easy drinking! The decor was a little strange, with the sheep head paintings everywhere but it added to the charm of the restaurant. When I went it was seat yourself, which was a nice touch.
