We went here for a late Sunday lunch and lo and behold they were serving brunch - yummy! Unfortunately, most of the food was only pork. Black Sheep really isn't a large place, yet we ended up being told after sitting down and waiting for around 30 min that our family is would take around 45 min. Dang. No big deal, it was busy! On the upside the service was great. I ordered the ham and cheese sandwich and it arrived burnt in) and greasy! The salad was very good. I agree with the others about the sound in there - was extremely loud and had to lean in for a convo. Don't think I'll return. read more

Truly love the atmosphere of this place, but really it's a hit or miss with their menu. Went a few months back and they had side options and more appetizers but when I visited this weekend I felt very limited with choices and left still hungry (which really defeats the purpose of going out to eat). Tends to be a more expensive, but you pay for the attentive service and chic surroundings. Used to be my favorite place to go for drinks and appetizers after work. Returned the other day to find that the menu changed, as well as the ambiance. Not only did the prices go up, but also the volume of the music (noise). I asked the waitress to turn it down a couple times but nothing seemed to happen. Also the appetizers which used to be reasonable went up in price. No more tater tots, pretzels, or polish sausages. Now you can pay 15 dollars for a cheese plate or a burger. Stopped in with work colleagues for drinks and potentially dinner one week after they opened. We deemed the price point acceptable of the wines as the place is modeled for a clientele wishing for an alternative and more upscale but relaxing drinking establishment. Menu was a bit unusual but we forged ahead sampling a variety of items leaving us full but curious about will they do wine pairings w/some of the more interesting entries? Found the décor appealing & amusing without being too irrelevant creating an atmosphere to take that certain customer out who's not mainstream and prefers a comfortable environment for drinks and dialog (no TV's thankfully.) Our group agreed Black Sheep Wine Bar is a welcome addition to the Milwaukee nightlife scene and nice alternative for that casual customer dinner, out with friends or even on a date! read more

Black Sheep Mke truly spoiled our party of 14 on January 3rd! Valerie accommodated our every wish knowing this trendy Walker's Point hot spot was one of six stops on our self guided pub/restaurant crawl. Our rambunctious group bombarded the reserved tables and we were promptly greeted by the most attentive server. Within minutes speciality drinks, beer, and wine were in our hands and we settled into the unique ambience of this 5th Ward gem! Valerie had even coordinated with me prior to our arrival and arranged to have our requested music playing on the sound system. The mood of the Black Sheep was exactly what we needed on our third stop of our fun night. Due limited time, we only induldged in small bites and everyone is still raving about the tots! This was a disappointment. We stopped in to Black Sheep about 1:15 on a Saturday for Brunch. There was a party of about a dozen who were already seated and enjoying beverages. There were two other tables with 2 or 3 others that were waiting for food, and there was another table near us that had already eaten. There were many open tables. We put in our order and waited. And waited. And waited. After at least 25 minutes, the waiter apologized, blaming the large party for the delay, even though they had already had their food for about 15 minutes. In fact everyone has their food except us. So we waited about another 15 minutes before getting our food. When the waiter brought our food, he reversed our orders - maybe not a big deal, but not impressive when a restaurant has more empty seats than occupied. My spouse asked for hot sauce - after waiting five minutes and seeing the waiter chatting at the bar, he approached the bar to ask again. In the meantime, we discovered that the breakfast potatoes on my spouses plate had a lovely color, but many were COLD inside. Not just " not hot" but actually cold. The waiter offered to get some new ones, but considering how long it took to get these, we declined - by then the eggs would be cold, right? My pork belly sandwich was just ok. The bread had grill marks, but the pork was room temperature ( maybe it was supposed to be - not sure) and both the pork and the the coleslaw were pretty bland. The sandwich had sliced apple on it - 3 thin slices that were just in a stack - not even spread out across the sandwich. Obviously, done in a hurry. Too long of a wait for just okay food. We left a tip, but not what we usually leave. I was tempted to not tip at all, but wasn't sure how much of the problem was in the kitchen. Such a disappointment. read more

We spent a lovely hour or so at The Black Sheep MKE last Saturday afternoon. It was sunny and warm, so we sat outside. The patio is on the street, nothing large but certainly pleasant enough. The staff was friendly and professional. We were waited on by Sarah, who took great care of us as we ambled through the by-the-glass wine list. Most of the offerings were reasonably priced and off the beaten path---a refreshing departure from the norm. Sarah was happy to discuss our choices with us, and to bring us samples for consideration. We didn't eat there on the day, but the menu looked intriguing. We're not native to the area so we probably won't get there again, but if we lived in town we'd definitely make The Black Sheep MKE one of our regular weekend stops. read more

My friends and I had a great time there last Friday. Arrived at 6:00 to an almost full house, but even with a big crowd our experience was great. Fantastic poutine, meaty goodness with great curds. Tatar tot nachos really good as well. We drank some of the signature cocktails and beer. La Fin du Monde for $6, hard to beat that. Very cool wine list as well. Esoteric selections and priced as well as I've seen in Milwaukee. Looking forward to another visit. read more

Wow! This place actually made me take the time to create an account and write a review on Yelp. I visited Black Sheep on opening night (not on purpose) looking for a light dinner and drink with my girlfriend. We arrived around 8:30 to a moderately busy night, but were able to get 2 seats at the bar right away. We then spent the next 10-15 min trying to get the attention of the 2 bartenders to no avail. They seemed to have mastered the art of making no eye contact what-so-ever with us. What was worse was they were clearly spending more time attending to the company party of folks who were apparently the brainchildren of this establishment. I'm not sure if they could also be credited with selecting the low fidelity audio sound of crappy techno music... Lets not blame everything on them! (I would just note they will probably come back...they work upstairs) If almost by accident we were finally noticed, and then began the true depths of what we were in for. The younger female bartender put on no airs as to her bar-tending prowess. Without the slightest solicitation, we were informed she does not work there, is not really a bartender, and was merely helping out a friend. Well it showed honey. She was not sure if she should hand us a menu, as I guess just before 9:00 PM on opening night is kitchen cut-off. She yelled over to the other bartender whom I was to find out is part owner. With a scowl and no eye contact, we were told to order quickly and they would see if the order would "go through". -I love the mystery already! At this point I wanted to leave and cut my losses. But almost at the same time my girlfriend and I decided to let this train wreck take its course and see what happens. Wait...at that same moment the bartender just walked away to help the company party again...dear lord. OK, she came back! We ordered the plain "hand cut fries" to play it safe, have a drink and leave. I ordered a 16.9oz Paulaner Weiss beer served in a 12oz glass which I found very upscale and chic. Pouring those last few ounces of yeasty beer in the glass later was going to be my desert! My girlfriend ordered some pain in the ass micro beer that the bartender could not find in their 1/2 empty glass coolers. The bartender got really frantic and panicked, yelling at the cooler to tell her where it was. Hard to hear over the sweet sounds of ...OK OK I'll leave that one alone. 20 min later a guy comes up with 2 plates of food and asks if its ours. It was not. He gives it to the people who ordered it and then asks us what we ordered. We said regular fries, which he promptly returned within a few minutes. The cost of the fries was almost as irrelevant as they were. The menu was just so disjointed and fried, I really didn't want anything, but was bound to see this through. Paying and leaving was painful because we had to get the attention of the disgruntled staff again. Well that's about it. I have never written on Yelp, and this was about as tiresome as my Company B-Sheep visit was. At least it looked like they had fun... Final notes: 1) Greet people when they first arrive. If you are truly busy, let them know you will be with them soon and reasonable people will understand. 2) Hire people who are professional and know what they are doing. 3) Focus on the customer, not the back staff. 4) Post hours for the kitchen and stick to it. 5) Revamp entire menu while you still can. -Completely disjointed and makes no sense. $7.00 glass of wine with frozen Sysco fries and gallon of Cheez-whiz goo? 6) ***Fix the riveted strips on the bar surface that are not finished in any way. Someone is going to slash their arm or elbow on the sharp steel edges.*** 7) Age and crowd appropriate music. 8) Serving your own wine makes no sense to me. 9) Tone down the over-sized gaudy logos all over the front and sides of the building. I was here celebrating with some friends and the server brought over the wrong bottle of wine. When it came time to pay, the total was triple the price of what we had been expecting (bc the server brought the wrong bottle of wine over). We had been enjoying our time and gabbing when she came over to present the bottle and didn't thing to question what she had brought us over. When we talked to the manager about the situation, she stated they could only deal with the issue by offering a small percent discount off of the bottle. When we told her we wouldn't dine with them any more, she smiled and said "that's okay." This was the worst dining experience, I've ever had. I went to Black Sheep for Brunch and was disappointed with the options available for those with allergies. After discussing a few of the menu items with the waitress, she explained that none of the items could altered because they were we "pre-made". Many of the entrees were over $15, and to find that they were just "warmed up", rather than made to order, at that price, was shocking. I have a gluten allergy and was very upset that my only option for BRUNCH was a house salad. Their bloody mary's were also very heavy on the horseradish, tasting almost like cocktail sauce. With 2 12 year old grandsons, and a wife returning to her birthplace, where's the place you go? These were the best gourmet hot dogs ever, and the very best french fries, crisp, and with a variety of dips. The decor was neat and contemporary, and the place filled with very attractive ladies, but, of course, I hardly noticed because I was with the most beautiful woman Milwaukee has ever produced. The dogs' names were catchy, but it was the taste of the pretzel~ bun and the thick all beef dog... mine had blue cheese, arugula and balsamic vinegar.... (I split a second with my wife!) And I do not eat french fries for they are a waste of calories, but not here! These really are the best french fries the world has known. Service was great. Street parking... we were lucky! Not the usual place for pre-teens, but the guys had a great time with the dogs and fries And Happy Hour prices made it affordable! Had a fabulous dinner here tonight with my husband and friends. Great happy hour with very attentive bartender. Prompt, friendly and accommodating service when I asked for a swap of my side dish due to an intolerance. One of the best salmon dishes I've ever had, especially because of the great crisp and not drenched in any heavy sauce. Others had the butternut squash risotto, fish fry, and Nashville burger. We all cleaned our plates and, unfortunately had no room for dessert. And don't get me started on the unique wine selection! Who would have thought that a white wine from Switzerland (really?) would be my favorite. Love the fact that you can get small pours and try various wines throughout the evening that we've never seen or heard of before. Can't wait to come back and try brunch and then again for appetizers and dessert! Met one of the owners, Mike, who was friendly, gracious, and truly appreciated our business. We were just at Black Sheep tonight to celebrate 3 birthdays. When I was looking for a place for dinner I noticed they do a special cake for birthdays so I thought this would be great. I made reservations via their website and told them we are celebrating 3 November birthdays. We arrived in plenty of time for our reservation and were seated immediately. I pulled the hostess to the side and reminded her about the birthdays and she said yes we have that noted. So we were at the table reviewing the menu waiting for our waitress/waiter for quite some time. - very slow service. Finally he came over so we ordered drinks, appetizer and dinner right away. Drinks were were delivered by the hostess that went to the wrong table (they were putting their coats on to leave) we noticed and flagged her over. The appetizer we order the cheese and meat boards - they were very good. Then dinner came - the food was excellent. So we were done eating and the server came with the bill I looked at him and asked about the birthday cake - he had no idea. He went to check on it and it was taking forever for him to come back. When he did he said they are working on it but it will take a while. VERY DISAPPOINTED we told him to cancel. We looked at the bill and they added the gratuity mind you we had 6 people, of course due to the lack of service and the birthday request we lowered the gratuity. Price points were clearly too high for what you got and they clearly have no clue how to make a genuine sazerac. Give them another year and they'll be out of business. Although the food was excellent, our server, Keondra, was manipulative and flaky. Although we ordered our drinks right as we sat down, Keondra did not deliver them until after our food arrived at the table. When our food came out, one of my poached eggs rolled off onto the tray while Keondra was setting down my plate. This, itself, was not a big deal, however, I then waited on half of my portion and my drink to arrive. When inquiring about the chicken and biscuits portion size for brunch, Keondra encouraged my boyfriend's decision by telling him it came with a side of eggs. When looking over the bill, we were charged extra for the eggs and Keondra said it didn't come with eggs and that the eggs were extra. Although this seems minuscule, we didn't appreciate being manipulated into paying more. We will probably return to The Black Sheep again for the food, but we hope that the rest of the staff puts more pride and integrity into their jobs than what we experienced today. read more

Easily the worst service I have had in Milwaukee. Ignored for at least 10min after we sat down at the bar. Finally figured out (with no help from the staff) that it was a walk up self-serve style wine service, so I went up and tried to figure it out. A server saw me and took pity on me, and she very kindly instructed to go back to the bar and get a card for the wine vending machine. So I did, where I saw the server speak to another female employee who was washing glassware behind the bar, this employee washed glasses for another 2 minutes, then leaned over and pointed towards us as she spoke to the bartender--this is now 15 min or so after we entered and sat ourselves at the bar (there was no host to direct us). He comes over and asks us what we would like, we tell him we just want a glass of wine and some water. He leaves and another staff member comes and gives us a wine card. We finally go and figure out the wine machine. I come back with 2 glasses of wine for myself and my wife. We drink. Still no water. Flag the bartender he finally brings water. Finish glasses of wine, and (as a sign indicates) they offer bottles to-go. So we order a bottle to take away, which they are out of... ok, no biggie, but instead of a cordial "sorry, we are sold out of that wine" or something, all we get is "yeah, that wine is gone, do you want something else?" So we select another bottle. We ask to settle our bill, but he has no idea that he has our CC. He asks another employee, and finally processes our CC. We leave feeling exceptionally unwelcome. Honestly, I am not sure if this experience is due to a muddy concept, or poor management and training, or the ineptitude of the individuals with whom we dealt... whatever it was, I will not be back. And I will do whatever I can to ensure my friends will not have to endure this establishment as well. read more

My wife and I really wanted to like this place, however it was a let down. The place was busy for a Friday night but not over crowded. The vibe was great, lots of people around the bar area checking out the self serve wine, so we were pretty excited about trying it out for the first time. For the dining areas there were only 2 waitress' for the entire floor which lead to really slow service. Eh, no worries, besides we had ordered the tater tot nachos to start and I was really looking forward to them, however they were disappointing. Tots with cheese sauce, pico and sour cream. The tots could have been frozen ore Ida brand cause without the cheese and fixings they were bland. My wife ordered the chorizo dog I got the sloppy bro. Both were certainly 5 napkin meals for sure. The cheese curds on my bro were cold, and it was just ok. We got the cookie for desert and while you would think it would be hard to screw up a cookie... It was more like cake. Way to fluffy. So while the food left something to be desired and our waitress seemed unenthusiastic, the feel and vibe of the place will probably force us to give it another shot. read more

I generally don't leave reviews when I have poor service. I tend to give a place the benefit of the doubt, but so many things went wrong, I felt obligated to say something. We had a reservation for 8:30 on Valentine's Day. We showed up a little early to have drinks at the bar and the hostess seated us at the bar, telling us she would let us know when our table was ready. A little after 9:00 The bartender asked us if we were still waiting for a table. She went to the hostess and the hostess got us a table. There were open tables, and she had clearly forgotten about us. no big deal. She told us we could have half off our drinks for the night (an already advertised special) and she would let the waitress know. We sat there waiting for someone to take her order for maybe half an hour after that. Finally my boyfriend stopped a waitress and asked if we could order our food after watching tables get seated after us place their orders. No one had come to say hi or anything. We placed our order and since it had been about an hour after our reservation we asked for some bread or something for while we waited. It never came. Our drinks took quite a while as well. At this point it wasn't very busy at the bar or in the dining area. When our food came out there was no steak knife for my steak, but the woman who brought our food said she'd be right back with one. She never came back with one so we had to ask. We ordered dessert, and watched it get delivered to the wrong table. The couple that got it were clearly confused. Our waitress did notice this and ran down to the kitchen and brought it to us herself, apologizing. We had finished and were done with our drinks and had to ask for the check, quite a while after the waitress had already asked if we were done. We had let the waitress know about what the hostess said about the half price drinks in advance, but were actually charged for three rounds of drinks instead of the two we actually had, so we had to wait for the bill to be corrected to the half price drink special that was already going on (the shred your ex half price drink special from 7-close). We didn't get to leave until 11 because of all of this. Looking back, I'm sure we will find this dinner funny, and I was happy to have it with someone so patient and upbeat. I just can't believe this all happened. And honestly, at other restaurants if one or two of these things happened, I would usually see that our dessert was free or a free drink or some kind of discount just to apologize for everything going wrong, but there was nothing other than the advertised drink special that we had to ask for after being charged for more than we ordered. At least the company was great, even if the service was so poor that we weren't really able to enjoy our food. We are both really patient and forgiving people but this was too much, even for us. Sorry Black Sheep, you really failed us. At least we have a great story to tell at the party we're going to tonight! read more

I've been here twice now and have had good experiences both times. I would agree with others that it seems as though they may have an identity crisis. Upscale atmosphere serving hot dogs. It seems strange, but it just may work. It's a great atmosphere to have a few drinks without feeling too stuffy. The Baa Baa Black Sheep is delicious. The poutine is outstanding and the hot dogs are very yummy. I've tried both the trailer park and wooster dogs and was very pleased with both. And service has been fast and friendly. Superb drinks, stunning atmosphere and incredible food by Chef Ryan. I don't know where to start. From the flavor packed Arancini, to the gargantuan Poutine, to the mouthwatering short rib my guests were salivating for MORE! I was impressed with the enthusiastic bar crowd, the open environment and the awesome sheep art on the walls and the hilarious ones in the bathrooms.
