I found Black Sheep Salon on TikTok a few years ago and I absolutely love my hairstylist Frankie. The TikTok highlighted that they specialize in gender-affirming cuts and curly hair and I was sold. Also, I could actually afford the prices. I even ended up hiring Frankie for my wedding day hair. I am chronically ill, autistic, and covid-conscious and it is so nice to go to a salon that gets all those things and offers accommodations as needed. I feel like my photos speak for themselves. I had such high hopes for this salon and the hairdressers. We had an appointment scheduled for my kiddo a few weeks ago and they had a slight cold so after consulting with their potential hairdresser, Mimi, we rescheduled. We rescheduled for two weeks later. Their appointment was scheduled for 10:30am. We knew this appointment would take the majority of the day as it's a bleach job on curly hair, plus dye and cut. So I took the day off. At 9am I received a text asking to postpone the appointment to 11/11:15am. Then by 10am I received a text canceling the appointment all together. I asked if there was someone in the salon to take over appointments if the hair stylist went feeling well. They said no. I was offered an appointment 5 days from now. While I understand getting sick or not feeling well etc, I find the way the way the situation as handled very unprofessional. I myself went to the salon once about two weeks before this interaction and again had high hopes. I wanted a dye and trim for an A-line long bob. I left with a choppy chord bob with the back of my neck shaved. I hated it so much. There was another patron getting their hair done near me and once they left, the two hair stylist were talking badly about the client. Directly in front of me. The vibe and aesthetic there would have been amazing but it just misses the mark with the lack of professionalism. This was hands down my best experience in any salon. I got a wash, treatment, curly cut, and lesson with Tombra. How rare is it to find a place that truly specializes in all kinds of hair. Tombra was so so sweet listening to my concerns, answering all of my questions, and reassuring me throughout the entire appointment. I have VERY dense type 4 hair and could be sat next to someone with truly straight hair and both of us got exactly what we wanted! All of the staff were so personable and kind. I don't know how to describe how much I love Black Sheep. The interior? A vibe. The people? Amazing. The atmosphere? Life-changing. The space is absolutely inclusive to ALL, and Black Sheep stands on business with what they do. As a queer and neurodivergent person I have never felt more comfortable and cared for in a space. Marie was so warm, welcoming, and really listened to me and what I wanted done with my hair, even with how nervous I was about it. Everyone else in the space that was there was just as warm and welcoming, and I left feeling loved, cared for, and hyped up with my new haircut. My curls were rejuvenated, bouncy, and looking the best they have looked in YEARS. Marie also gave me some pointers on how to take care of my hair, and also showed me a new way to style it, which I'm already excited to try. My undercut? Phenomenal. Amazing. Frankie is my stylist who I constantly return to because they make me feel beautiful every single time! Frankie is the first stylist to ever make me feel like I'm not a bother with my hair. I got married last month in Oceanside and to my dismay, I couldn't find any salons in the area that I felt I could get a bridal style done with natural, two-strand twists. My stylist up in the Bay Area suggested checking out Black Sheep Salon, even though they're in Long Beach, and I'm so glad I did. I connected first with a stylist thought would be the best fit based on her IG, and Tamara was excited and very collaborative as we spent some time exchanging ideas and inspiration virtually. I met with her at the salon earlier this year and we had a nice consultation where we figured out the plan for the big day. I found the salon itself very welcoming and I appreciate that it's just the stylists and the clients in at any given time. They offer snacks and drinks and I was very comfortable during my ~5 hour appointment. When I had feedback, Tamara was super receptive, and I was very happy with my final product. FRANKIE IS A HAIR GOD I drove all the way to Long Beach from SD for some new hair. I am one of the most obnoxious clients to have because I am VERY bad at making decisions, and I don't know how to describe what I want (neurodivergent as heck). I also have an incredibly sensitive scalp. Frankie was incredible and helpful. They helped me decide on a direction to go with my hair, suggested calico hair dye, and went to work. Honestly, the most pleasant experience I've ever had at a salon. I absolutely love my hair, and this is the coolest hair I've ever had. I will 100% be returning in the future, despite the drive, because it's totally worth it. Been coming here for over a year. LOVE the energy here. Everyone gets along, there's so much teamwork. It's inclusive to all peoples and bodies. I think the chair can hold up 800lbs, but ask them to verify. The wash station also allows you to recline more instead of just tilting your head back in a classic chair at the salon scenario. If you need a quiet talk free appointment, extra covid precautions, private room, ear plugs, fidget toys, snacks or drinks they got you! Marie is the owner and my go to. I've chatted a bit with Tunowa and Frankie, admired what a 70s babe Dinnie is, and have just recently met Mimi. Gandalf is there now chilling in his lil froggy bed and is the absolute cutest. Marie is excellent with my curls. As a black woman, it has been a struggle to find someone who can take care of my curls and not tell me I should just press it just to get a trim. Each time Marie has done my hair I get compliments on how beautiful my curls look. Your first appointment does include tips ans techniques on how to manage your hair. Black Sheep Salon really seems to pride itself on its inclusiveness and bold sense of individuality; as someone who is pretty offbeat and is neurodivergent, this really intrigued me. Super quirky and filled with positive vibes, this space is designed to serve all people. The chairs are super comfortable and roomy, everyone was super friendly, the aesthetic really emphasized being yourself, and the overall vibe was just amazing. I booked an appointment with Leah for a curl detox and lesson and they were so awesome, gentle, thorough, nonjudgmental, and very patient; Leah was completely transparent about what products they were using and the process, and I felt very well taken care of during my service. My hair looked and felt fantastic for the first time in forever, and Leah shared lots of super useful tips to help maintain my curls as well. I really appreciated the entire experience. I've had 3 cut services by Tunowa and each time I leave with exactly what I asked for (and honestly more!). Tunowa was able to correct my bland, misshapen "men's" cut (done by a different shop) and gave me back some of my androgynous-femme wonder. Everyone in the shop is highly skilled, trained and welcoming to all people, identities & hair types.
