For dinner tonight, both my cousin and I ordered the Iowa pork shop . Ask for it to be medium medium rare. I have to say, as an Iowan. My Iowa chops are usually no less than an inch. Thick and up to 2 inches. What arrived was a half inch thick and totally dried out piece of pork. That was very sad. The waitress and the manager, were understanding and offered an alternative to our dinners and did bring out a dessert which was for myself, was The carrot cake, which was mediocre at best. This is not the first time I've eaten at this restaurant. And the last time there I had a satisfactory meal with my guest. The crab cake appetizer was satisfyingly filling, though the cakes themselves could've used a bit more seasoning to shine on their own. That said, the deviled egg relish they sat atop was flavorful and clever--and I may or may not have borrowed a few minced jalapeños from my husband's plate to kick things up a notch. His burger was creative and well-executed--he thoroughly enjoyed it--but the fries were lukewarm, which slightly dulled the dish's potential. Absolutely Beautiful repurposing of an early 20th Century building. Friendly greeting by the hostess and quick seating for a Saturday lunch with family. There's lots on the bar menu with many craft beers, some in house brews, many from other microbreweries. We had Bloody Mary's, served with a pickle, olive, and a tasty (!) slice of bacon. Appetizing menu and the food delivered on expectations. Servings are generous and tasty. We began with Duck Fries appetizer. There were 4 of us, and we had leftover--it is sizable. We had three different sandwiches (all big, ask for a box and cut in 1/2 first thing) and all were served with a big side dish. No need for fries after the appetizer. There a tasty dessert menu. I want to like Black Sheep more than I do, but I just think it falls short of the quality it attempts to deliver. It's a gorgeous building and despite being downtown, the parking isn't terrible. Unfortunately, I don't think the food or service are very good. Things tend to come out overcooked and dry and I think the menu tries a little too hard for my liking, but that can be a preference issue. Stopped by this place on our Iowa road trip, based on Yelp reviews. Hubby and I don't drink so the bars were not considered. The reviews did not disappoint! Place was nicely situated with free parking. Ambiance inside was nice with a bit of history sprinkled in - notice the brick walls/pavers. Ordered their chicken wings plain with a side of ranch and we both agreed it's one of the best chicken wings we've had! It was crunchy on the outside and juicy and flavorful inside - nothing plain about it. We also ordered the blueberry burger (we were curious) and were pleasantly surprised! We stopped in on a Saturday evening for some apps and drinks. We were greeted right away at the door and we asked to sit at the bar and were told to help ourselves to a seat. Bar staff were very friendly and attentive. The staff at this establishment seem to have a great system and communication because it seemed like they worked together so well! The place had plenty of seating and there were even some large rooms it looked like you could use for something like a rehearsal dinner. The drinks were delicious and crafted in front of us. Mine was a take on an old fashioned and they smoked some applewood to infuse in the cocktail. Very good! We ordered the Fish Nuggets and Duck Fat Fries and both were SO GOOD. The Fish Nuggets had a captain crunch breading and seasoned well. The fish itself was hot, fresh, and meaty. Highly recommend, I can't wait to come back just for this appetizer alone! We were in the area visiting family and sought out something different for dinner. The Black Sheep Social Club sounded intriguing the our experience matched expectations. The historic building has been tastefully transformed in to a neat restaurant/bar. They do a good job of sharing building highlights on the menu. They have an impressive bar selection with wines, beers, mixed drinks and straight up liquor. They literally offer something for everyone. The weekday happy hour from 4-6pm was also a nice touch with a fair number of drinks included. For dinner my husband went with the Iowa Pork Chop. The flavor was great and the portion size was fair. The bone in the chop makes it appear larger than the actual serving size of the meat. He said the green beans were also excellent (who complements green beans?!). I went with the roasted squash tacos for something different. This vegetarian dish didn't make me feel like I was missing anything. The toasted pepitas and the apple/greens slaw added a good crunch in contrast with the roasted squash. I opted to upgrade to the sweet potato fries and glad I made that choice. The dipping sauce had a bit of kick to it, but it didn't stop me from enjoying more. The ambiance was so beautiful and trendy. Our cocktails were super yummy. The server was a little condescending. My vodka pasta was sooo spicy, which should be an arabiata not a vodka. My guess is there were way too many red pepper flakes added. It was really good but almost inedible. My friend's mushroom tacos were sooo spicy she ate one and sent the others back. She even said she didn't like them & then she ordered soup. The server did not attempt to correct or understand the situation. We didn't want anything comped. This place was actually our second choice after a failed booking over at the Cobble Hill left my 83-year-old mother overwhelmed by noise, dim lighting, inflexibility on seating, and her favorite dish being out of stock. Black Sheep to the rescue! We were seated with only a minimal wait after arriving without reservations on a busy Saturday night. They won't take reservations for groups of less than eight, but can accommodate despite the deserved popularity. Parking is free and plentiful after 5 p.m.in the normally problematic downtown area. The menu is innovative and tasty, though I disagree with some of the assessments in other reviews here. After a delicious Old Fashioned cocktail made with their default Bulleit bourbon, we split a duck fat fries order for the table of four. Yes, large enough to do that. Sorry, but it was just cheese fries, or some sort of Poutine on steroids rather than the gourmet curio I was expecting. Mom and I wisely went with the Prime Rib, which is big--don't let the wimpy sounding "10 ounce" moniker trick you into order elsewhere. It was rare as requested, but I really hoped for blood rare. Still delicious and reasonably priced for what it goes for these days. WEEKENDS ONLY!!! The wife loved her meatloaf comfort food, and the "Sheperd's (sic) Pie" must've been named after a guy named Sheperd. Ground beef replaced the purists' lamb and the presentation was oddly stew-like but was heartily enjoyed. We enjoyed Black Sheep so much we came back the following evening. Both nights we sat up at the bar and enjoyed Happy Hour, which is from 4 to 6 Monday through Friday. It was mainly just beer and wine on HH but the regular drink prices were reasonable at around $10 for a crafted cocktail. My favorite was the maple pecan old fashioned. My husband had a spicy mango cocktail with mezcal and tequila garnished with jalapeños. Sorry I forgot the name but it's on their drink menu. It was unique and delicious. The menu is vast and everything we had was great with the exception of the steak caprese salad. I had to send it back because the meat did not taste fresh and the mozzarella had no flavor. They were very accommodating and apologized. No biggie because everything else was excellent. The duck fat fries are a must try. Also, the PB&J pork belly bites and prosciutto dip. All are considered appetizers but the portions were large and shareable. So shareable we didn't even need to order a main course. The two friendly bartenders behind the bar kept the drinks coming both nights and on our second visit we were warmly greeted and welcomed back. Clunky service, slick and contemporary pub atmosphere, predictably eclectic new American food, with slightly questionable flavors and execution. We arrived right at open with a large group and no reservations, and were immediately told we could not be seated, even though the restaurant was completely empty. After some light begging on our part, and a promise we'd be out before their rush started, we were seated and greeted by a server who was much more disheveled than you'd expect for the start of his shift. It was Friday, so several of us ordered the prime rib special, and I think that was my biggest mistake. As a huge prime rib fan, I'm always excited to see how restaurants interpret what should be a relatively predictable dish. And yes, it did come with a horseradish cream, as well as some au jus, but outside of an oddly smokey flavor, it lacked any seasoning, and was surprisingly tough and hard to cut with the provided dull knife. But beyond the lackluster meat, was the plating and strange sides. The meat was plated on top of mashed potatoes and green beans with carrots and pearl onions. The potatoes were fine, but the beans were incredibly salty and hit with a heavy hand of oregano, a flavor I did not expect, that did not pair or relate to anything else on the plate. Related, I added a side of sautéed onions, and they were straight up awful. Undercooked, with an off-putting flavor I assume came from the liquid they were lightly braised in. To add insult to injury, the included crab cakes were criminally dry. I'm sure we'll be back, as this restaurant is a real crowd pleaser, but next time I will skip the special and take a look around the room to see what the regulars are ordering. read more

It was a celebratory dinner for two visiting Black Sheep Social Club for the first time. Each had a cocktail, house wine, an entree and a dessert that was shared. The cocktails and house wines were very good. The food was good but would be better served hot rather than warm. The room was so cold we had to keep coats on which distracted from our ability to have a lingering and relaxing evening. The s'more cheesecake was disappointing. The cheesecake would be greatly improved by melting the chocolate chips and toasting the marshmallows on top of the cheesecake rather than dumping them on the cheesecake. The atmosphere was very nice with the replica clock and historical tiles. The wait staff was very attentive. We will have an encore visit -- maybe in the summer when we can sit outside. read more

Two night's ago, my wife and I tried Black Sheep Social Club for the first time. Overall, I thought it was a great experience, despite a few very minor missteps. I genuinely struggle with whether the minor missteps are even worth mentioning. I usually try to have appropriate expectations for restaurants based on price points. So, the same issue that's not even worth mentioning at a restaurant like Cheddar's (which sells a meatloaf for $13.50) might be something that really bother's me at a restaurant like Joseph's Steakhouse (which sells a ribeye for $65.00). Black Sheep sells a meatloaf for $17.00, and a porterhouse for $55.00, which makes it hard to slot them into a certain price point. While our food was excellent, I might actually say that my favorite thing about The Black Sheep Social Club was the decor. I don't usually care about decor at all, but The Black Sheep was absolutely beautiful. I would definitely recommend them as a date venue, when the atmosphere is especially important. As I've mentioned, the food was excellent. I ordered the penne a la vodka, and a side of the vegetable risotto. When I try a new restaurant, I generally try to find what I think are the two entrees I would like best, and I ask my server which of the two they would recommend. I find that eliminates the chance of ordering the worst thing on the menu. I don't remember the other option I was considering, but I remember that I totally expected our server to say he prefered that one. Whatever it was, it made more sense with a side of risotto than a pasta dish does, but I decided to stick with the side of risotto, and just have a very carb heavy meal. My wife ordered the risotto entree (which ended up being just a larger portion of the vegetable risotto side), and she also got a crunchberry cheesecake for dessert. I think the star of everything we ordered was the risotto. Interestingly, I considered ordering the risotto entree until I saw that it had cauliflower in it. If I had to name the food I hate the most, it is without a doubt cauliflower. So, even though I absolutely love risotto, I opted not to get the orzo and cauliflower risotto entree in favor of the vegetable risotto side. When our food came and I saw that my side was definitely orzo risotto, I looked a little closer to confirm that the "vegetable" in "vegetable risotto" was indeed cauliflower. I actually ended up eating about half of my risotto side, and found it quite enjoyable despite how much I hate cauliflower. That's pretty impressive. My wife enjoyed hers so much that she actually requested two sides of it to go. My penne a la vodka was also very good. The pasta was cooked correctly, the meal was sauced appropriately, and the chicken which I had as an add-on was cooked perfectly. I also enjoyed the couple bites I had of my wife's Cap'n Crunch cheesecake. All around, the food was excellent! So, that just leaves the few minor missteps. The first was that our waiter took my wife's drink to refill it, and never brought it back. She had asked for a Cherry Coke, and the waiter offered to mix grenadine and Coke to make one. So, when he took the glass to refill it, he probably brought it to the bar to have the bartender add the grenadine, and maybe got sidetracked. The second misstep was the crust on the cheesecake. It was without a doubt the hardest dessert crust I have ever encountered. I think the suhar in the Cap'n Crunch melted into the ground up cereal, and then hardened into something harder than the restaurant probably envisioned. I'm not saying the crust was unbreakable, but it was the type of thing where you had to press down hard enough that your utensil would make a loud noise on the plate in the rare instances you were able to break through. The last misstep was the table not being wiped down. We were a party of two, but were seated at a table for four. That's generally a nice convenience. We had space to put our phones, to spread out, etc. It probably wouldn't have mattered as much, but my wife had literally just opened a package with a new seude or microfiber phone case and put it on her phone before we got in the car to go to dinner. When she picked up her phone from the table, the phone case had something sticky covering almost the entire side that was touching the table, and the bag with the to go risotto was also sticky. Since the restaurant had hostesses as well as servers, I would generally expect that the hostess who seats you, and the server who takes your order, would both be checking to make sure the table had been wiped down. Again, these aren't the types of issues that would even be memorable at a place like Cheddar's or Perkins. They're also the type of thing that wouldn't be accaptable at Joseph's or Orchard Green. I don't know how big / small of an issue they should be at Black Sheep. So, I'm just mentioning them as a side note. Overall, I would definitely recommend Black Sheep, and I will almost certainly return. read more
